Announcer from nbc news, this is today live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And welcome to today on this saturday morning. Im craig melvin. Love that. Were all smiling talking about it. If you woke up in a bad mood, just watch that video. Infectious laughter, right . We just watched it for the first time about ten minutes ago and weve watched it probably four times since then. I think because its just so genui genuine. Shes just purely excited. And refreshing, isnt it . Well have more from her. A nice pickmeup. Paris still reeling from another tragedy. We can only imagine. In fact, it is our top story this morning. And really, the breaking news overnight about the investigation into the egyptair crash and what happened in the moments before that plane went down. Investigators confirming today smoke alarms were going off before the plane slammed into the mediterranean sea. Nbcs chief global correspondent, bill neely, is in cairo this morning with the latest developments. Bill, good morning. Reporter good morning. French air accident investigators have confirmed there were serious technical problems. That airbus is driven by computers. They were failing, smoke the cause. And this morning the first images of the debris from that plane. As the search widens this morning, grim discoveries. Egypti egyptians finding body parts and aircraft seats. Investigators are sure theyre from the missing plane. This is the airbus that spiraled into the sea, but as it did, it sent flight data pointing to Serious Problems around the cockp cockpit. Sensors on a window went off, one apparently opened. Then a smoke sensor in the forward lavatory, then smoke in the avionics bay which controls the plane, then another window sensor. Then critically, problems with the pilots controls and computers. Terror or an accident . We dont know yet exactly what it is, but its a clear indication something was terribly wrong on flight 804. Reporter egyptair say theres nothing to suggest technical problems. My first concern is taking care of the passengers. And then we get from our sources the information. Were going to be transparent and were going to see. Reporter u. S. Search planes have joined the hunt which now covers an area of 5,000 square miles. In a cairo mosque, the bereaved struggle with their loss. This film director lost four members of his family. One of the french dead, pasquale hess, lost his passport, but it was found on the street and he boarded the plane. A french warship is joining the multinational search to find the plane, its flight recorders, and answers. At the paris airport from where the plane took off, security is even tighter, and everyone who had contact with it on the ground is being questioned. Its 74 minutes there, perhaps critical in explaining what caused it to disappear. Well, for the families, of course, this is torture. The French Foreign minister met more than 50 waiting relatives in paris this morning, and he said they showed intense emotion and huge dignity, and he reassured them that they would be told immediately everything investigators know. But of course, thats the problem, there is so little they dont know at the moment. Back to you. Bill neely, thank you. Greg feith is a former investigator with the ntsb. Good morning to you. Good morning. Lets start with the smoke here. That would, of course, indicate that there was some sort of fire. The question then becomes what caused the fire. Are we talking something electrical or are we talking something as simple as a passenger dropping a cigarette in the lavatory, or is this a sign that there may be perhaps something more sinister at work here . When you look at the timing of all of the faults that came up, especially with the lavatory smoke and the avionicsbased smoke, those are in two different places. And when you look at the timing between those faults, its very quick. So, more than likely, it is an explosive device or some fastmoving or fastburning fire. Electrical fires dont typically burn fast. Demand fact, wiring on airplanes is designed to be selfextinguishing. If somebody were to drop a cigarette in a trash can and catch a paper towel or some toilet paper on fire, it, too, doesnt burn fast and it would not set off all those sensors, especially down below the cockpit in the avionics bay. Greg, how are pilots trained to deal with the fire on board the plane . Well, when you look at it, if it is just a genuine fire, using your scenario of the lav fire, somebody threw a cigarette in there, both the pilots and the flight attendants are trained to address that fire using fire extinguishers. Other types of fires, if its an electricalbased fire and they can detect maybe what circuit its on, theyll pull Circuit Breakers to relieve the electrical lines of any energized power. But in this particular instance, with all the multiple faults, with the window faults, that is the rightside window sensors were going off, the avionics bay had smoke, there were other faults, especially with the Flight Control computers, that suggests that something happened more of an explosive nature to take out a number of different systems or affect a number of different systems in a very short period of time. Greg, we are just getting in in fact, just a few moments ago we started getting pictures of the debris, some of the debris thats been retrieved. What are investigators right now trying to glean from that evidence . When they look at that evidence, theyre going to, of course, be scouring it for any signs of explosivetype material, that is chemical residue, things like that. Theyre going to be looking for pitting or shrapnel strikes, similar to what we looked for in twa800, in mh17, when that aircraft got shot down. There is very definitive evidence of an explosion. Youll look for penetration from inside the aircraft out, since we suspect that if there is an explosive device, it was in the aircraft. So theyll be looking at the physical evidence. And of course, theyre going to be looking at all this fault information that came down through the data link or acars. Theyll be trying to ferret out that to see if there is any pattern that they can use to determine whether or not this was a rapid just building fire or an explosivetype device. Nbc news aviation expert greg feith. Greg, thanks, as always, sir. Youre welcome. Evan kohlmann is an nbc news terrorism analyst and senior partner at flashpoint. Evan, good morning to you. Good morning. Were now more than 48 hours after this, and youre quick to point out the fact that usually when a terrorist group takes responsibility, its 12 to 24 hours after the incident. So what does that tell you . Well, look, its not absolute. There have been groups that have claimed acts like this weeks, months later, but not isis. If were talking about isis in particular, isis tends to claim credit for Major International acts of terrorism within about 24 hours. If you look at the Russian Airliner in sinai, that was ten hours or less than twelve hours. Weve heard nothing from isis, nothing about this. And its not that we havent heard from them. Theyve been issuing communique after communique. Their actual franchise in egypt has claimed credit for other operations in the last couple of days, but theyve said nothing about the egyptair airliner. So, the question is, if theyre claiming credit for killing a policeman or blowing up a car, wouldnt it seem that they would want to claim credit for a Major International act of terrorism that is garnering tremendous publicity for them . And if theyre not, then why . So, if it is isis, there is this hanging question. There really is very little chatter going on right now among jihadists talking about this. Theres not a lot of information suggesting that a Jihadist Group was behind this. Nobodys claimed credit. Baffling. You know, its funny, you say that there is no evidence of a technical fault thats what the investigators are saying. Theres no evidence of terrorism either. And so, that leaves us to wonder what really caused this. Well, theres so much buzz, and they were just talking about it, about the lack of screening, of catering on these airplanes. We know, as you mentioned, isis claimed responsibility for taking down the russian jet with the soda can bomb. Weve seen the photo where they say this is the bomb. Is there any way Something Like that could have happened . Well, look, its possible. Its certainly possible. But the question is, how did that soda bomb, or presumed soda bomb, get on this aircraft . In sharm el sheik, where the Russian Airliner left from in sinai, this airport was notorious for having terrible security. And what isis managed to do was recruit an insider to put that on board the aircraft. The idea that it would be as easy to recruit an insider at Charles De Gaulle airport in paris, which is heavily secured and where there are many, Many International flights that leave every hour is a bit farfetched. Its a bit hard to believe. Is it possible . Its possible. Its just the chance is remote. So, theyve come to the other idea that if this was terrorism, is it possible that someone snuck this on in another airport that this airplane had traveled to . Four different airports within 24 hours. Including tunisia. So once again, the question is, how would someone sneak on board an explosive device on to this aircraft and know instinctively when that explosive device was going to go off and that the aircraft, it was going to be between paris and egypt . It could have driven just as easily between eritrea and egypt. And what is the significance then for isis . How does that prove the isis mission . There were, what, 60 people on board this plane . Right. Most of them were egyptian sunni muslims. They werent french nationals. Clearly so, what kind of a target is this for isis or any Jihadist Group . So many more questions than answers this morning. Evan kohlmann, thank you so much. Thank you. This morning the fbi, secret service and d. C. Police are all still trying to figure out precisely why a man approached the white house friday with a gun in his hand and refused orders to stop.
