the middle east, immigration reform and the battle over that subject that is taking place and seems to have been taking place in this country, george, for decades now, but those are subjects that the pope will be talking about tomorrow when he addresses his joint meeting of congress and yet i was interested to hear him say i will offer words of encouragement to lawmakers, not give them a lecture. >> well, he's not coming here as the 436th member of the house or the 101st senate. he's coming here as universal pastor of the catholic church, and i think he understands that this is a difficult moment in american political history. a lot of divisiveness, a lot of head-banging, not a whole lot of serious moral conversation about how we ought to be living together, and i think he want to lift that vision of possibility. it doesn't have to be this. >> the ceremony part of this morning is concluding, as can you hear the p.a. announcer telling the people, the 15,000 or so people who have gathered here at the white house that this part of the activities is over. we still have a parade of sorts around the ellipse where the pope will be toured and get a chance to see some of the faithful who have gathered here. they're going to meet now for 45 minutes or so, george, in private with just two translators. i would imagine at this point they're going to hit some of those issues we talked about. do they agree on more than they disagree on? >> there will be two meetings, matt. the holy father and president obama will meet with the translators. secretary of state kerry and the cardinal secretary of state who was here today will be meeting. and i think they will do more of the nitty-gritty. that's generally the way these things work. but i do expect and i know the bishops of the united states expect that the pope is going to underscore to the president how urgently the bishops feel about obamacare and its impact on religious freedom. >> let's go to nbc senior white house correspondent chris jansing, who is, i think, just above us here. chris, you have had a good view of this. what else can you add? >> reporter: i think that i was watching very closely the faces in the crowd, matt, to gauge their reaction, their experience. you and maria and george have been at many of these events at the vatican. it is a profoundly emotional experience that folks go through. i thought i saw a few people wiping away tears. i saw a few people hugging. much like maria, i saw a lot of people with wide smiles. this brings to mind the francis effect. what effect will his trip here have on what's happening in america since they are addressing so many of the issues that are so important to america that you mentioned, from immigration to climate change to normalization of relations with cuba. and i think we saw with pope john paul a call to religious life, a call to the priesthood. we're seeing, with this pope, so many people who are either coming back to the church or considering coming back to the church. and i guess the question that lingers out here today, as we are in washington in this magnificent setting, is what impact will he have, if any, on what's been a tremendously negative political discourse in this 2016 political season. the slick we've seen in congress that has made so many americans so disappointed. what will the francis effect be? i can tell you, looking at the faces on the folks in the crowd that they have been moved. will others in washington in positions of power, which he mentioned people in positions of power, will they be moved, matt. >> thank you, chris. that's exactly right. we're sitting in a location that is a bit of rarefied air. it's one of the days where you stop and think about how fortunate you are to have a job like this. i take pictures every once in a while. i took this one a second ago of the view from where we sit of watching the president and the pope address this crowd. george, i am taken back to 2008 where i had the great honor of sitting in this exact location at that time when pope benedict visited the white house and president bush. i sat with tim russert at that time. i not catholic, however, i agree with maria, you sit and you watch this and you look at the faces of the people who are witnessing it with you, and it is a deeply moving experience. it makes you feel good, and it gives you hope and hopefully that can be the message and that can be the feeling that lasts throughout the next five or six days of the pope's visit to this country. >> matt, as you know, the word "catholic" means universe. dylan thomas, i think it was, said catholicism means here comes everybody. that's true in the united states ee and fixed ee and fixed besides the 20% down, and you need to afford the property taxes, and the insurance, and if you can afford all of that and you know it, go ahead. but you hae t dt, caeeniy nn home, and be careful, girlfriend. >> and we we don't know where she is calling for, because it is so much more expensive in other parts of the country, and just one year out of college. >> and here is thing, people say, $1,300 in month in rent and i can afford a $1,300 a month mortgage, no. if you pay $1,300 a month mortgage, it is going to be about $2,000 with insurance and maintenance. big difference. >> and here is farra saving for retime. i make $5,000 a month, and reretirement is to set aside $6,500 to have the same lifestyle, and i puts a side the same amount as my company. >> and why don't you instead of having a mortgage, pay off the mortgage, and the largest expense you is the mortgage payment, and if you don't have that, then you don't need as much, and pay down the debt and pay down expense, and that is the next thing that you need to do to catch up. >> and is isn't there a tax reason to keep part of the mortgage. >> you would think so, but in tending years of the mortgage, there is no write-off anymore, because the banks want all of the money up front, and so they chr you the interest up front, and then in the ending years, you are paying all of t prip and so that way, if you sell the house, they have their money anyw anyway, and after the first 7 to the 10 , truly a shame. >> and tiffany wants to ask this about debt. i know you said to leave your retirement alone, and what if you are drowning in debt and it is enough to pay off all of your credit card debt and student loan debt. >> well, no, tiffany, you are not old enough to draw it penalty tax-e free and if you owe $100,000, you have to withdraw $200,000, because you will pay ordinary income tax and a penalty, give me a break. leave it alone and let it grow and figure out ways to get a low-interest rate on the ways that you have the credit cards and if you are afraid of the student loan debt, transfer it to the zero% credit card and there are ways to tackle the debt without touching the retirement, girlfriend. >> and listen to mama, and who doesn't. and here is the one froml what should a young professional with a 401(k) do to invest and save more? >> besides the 401(k), you can have a ira or a roth ashgs ra and hopefully a roth 401(k) and not a trigs dal 401(k), because you want to take the money out later in life tax-free, and so open up a rothira as well if you qualify and invest that way. >> suzy, awesome, and we don't have time for anymore, but you can download suzy's deal and go to today.o and it is a free financial course free until friday at 5:00 p.m. eastern. and go to klg and hoda the -- k lshl klg and hoda.com and ask your questions. >> and yes. >> you are hare helping so many people, and it is a great thing people, and it is a great thing make tonight white dchicken chili night!?
