The slowspeed chase in los angeles. Helping police nab the driver so why did he end up in cuffs . Dont worry. Alls well that ends well. Today, saturday may 23rd 2015. Announcer from nbc news this is today with lester holt and erica hill. Live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And welcome to today on this saturday morning. Im erica hill. Im Thomas Roberts in for lester. Sheinelle jones and dylan dreyer are here. We have a great morning here because it is fleet week. We have the men and women of the Armed Services on the plaza looking sharp. We love. That what a great way to start this. This is the unofficial start of summer. We dont want to forget the reason we have memorial day and thank the men and women who are serving. Looking forward to seeing them in a bit. We will have a tugofwar battle coming up this morning. And we also have an onset battle with the stripes and solids. We will break it all down and have winners by 9 00. We want to get to the top story this morning. Potential for recordbreaking flooding in the south. Parts of texas could see up to 10 inches when it is said and done. This morning, residents are preparing for the worst. Nbcs mark potter is in wichita falls, texas. Mark good morning. Reporter good morning, thomas. You can see the rising flood waters here. Racing through here about a half mile from downtown. This is normally a bike path. The river itself is on the other side of those trees. Officials thought they were facing a moderate flood that would end soon but they got shocking news this could become a record flood which put many here into overdrive. Racing against time and rising water, county workers and volunteers from the nearby air force base workday and night to fill sand bags to protect neighborhoods along the flooding wichita river. All of this is bagged up and sent out to tanglewood east side, burnet park out of 367 wrangler retreat. Reporter following heavy rain the wichita started to overflow threatening homes along the banks. People were evacuated and power to the homes shut off. Things in the home we propped up on card tables and saw horses. Reporter base based on earlier weather forecasts, they thought the flooding would be moderate. It is all a matter of timing. Reporter then a believing with the National Weather service, a startling update. It will hit hard and heavy. Reporter calling now for a potentially historic flood that could affect thousands of homes and last into next week. Definitely an eye opener. It stunned all of us. Reporter the new prediction suggestions that with more rain coming the river could rise to levels 1 to 3 feet higher than the recordbreaking 2007 flood that swamped nearly 170 homes in wichita falls. Now local officials are revising the evacuation plan and expecting more help from the state. The irony, the area was facing a severe drought and running out of drinking water. Now this. Thank you, mark. Dylan is tracking the weather in the south. Keep in mind this area ends up with 2 to 4 inches of rain for the month of may. They already have 7 to 14 inches of rain in the month of may alone. It is all because of this pattern. We had this steady dip in the jet stream out west that triggers the showers and storms. We have the moisture coming in from the gulf of mexico. Not only do you have downpours with inches of rain. And we see this at amarillo. Not a lot in Central Texas for now. The trigger is there. We will see more heavy rain redevelop later on today. We have flash flood watches from Kansas City Missouri to southern texas. This is because when the storms develop, they produce 1 to 2 inches of rain as they move through the area. That leads to more flash flooding. We do have this chance of showers and storms but most severe from denver down to dallas and into southwestern texas. We are looking at large hail and damaging wind gusts. We could see isolated tornadoes as well. As far as the rain it will redevelop later on today with another perhaps 4 to 5 inches of rain possible. Erica. Dylan, thanks. Memorial day is the unofficial start to summer. A chance for millions of americans to get outside and enjoy themselves. Maybe go visit friends and family. This weekend, an estimated 37 million americans expecting to hit the roads and skies. About 33 million will be driving to their destination. According to aaa, this is the first time in ten years that this many people are traveling over the memorial day Holiday Weekend. The last time we saw numbers anywhere close to that back in 2005 when the peak was 44 million. All of this could be contributed to the fact we have low gas prices. National average is 2. 66 a gallon. It is still 1 less than this time a year ago. Of course as people are getting ready to hit the road we are hoping whenever they are, maybe they will find a bit of sense. A broader forecast for those hitting the roads. The eastern half is where we will see the gorgeous weather. High pressure system bringing nice conditions up the east coast. There is snow in caribou, maine. We sit 70s on the east coast on sunday. Stronger storms down south. The west coast looks nice but rockies will see showers and storms. Monday we could feel the heat. Especially through d. C. Where it will be 90 degrees by memorial day. Still looking at the threat of strong storms through eastern texas on memorial day itself. That is again an area where they are not really enjoying the barbecue but it is too soggy and too much flooding. Dylan, thanks. The search is on for at least one other person in connection with the horrific murders of the washington, d. C. Mansion last week. One man charged with murder but police say he likely had help. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell has more. Reporter good morning, thomas. The question is who else is out there. Without explaining why they have the suspension Authorities Say they believe that more than one person was likely involved in the crime. A Home Invasion and a murder of the wealthy family and housekeeper. One suspect is behind bars but who and where are the other possible perpetrators . Unsealed Court Records reveal troubling details about the firy murder scene in the d. C. Mansion. Investigators contend the hostage taking for ransom and the killings required the presence and assistance of more than one person. One man is in jail this morning. 34yearold Daron Dylon Wint who appeared in court friday charged with first degree murder. Mr. Wint is now incarcerated and held without bond. Our work is not done. Reporter Authorities Say that the savopoulos family and housekeeper were held captive by mr. Wint and others until the 40,000 was delivered to the home. Another delivery was crucial. The night before the murders, documents show Amy Savopoulos ordered pizza by credit card and gave unusual delivery instructions. Noting she would not come to the door and the delivery person was to place the two pizzas on the porch and ring the door bell and leave. Authorities say dna found on pizza crust was linked to Daron Dylon Wint. The suspects had been beaten and stabbed. Phillip was found on a bed badly burned. Authorities tracked cell phones to wint to follow his movements to brooklyn, new york where this video shows part of the manhunt. Back to the d. C. Area where he was captured late thursday along with others who had not been charged. We had the four vehicles and surrounded the box truck. Everybody gave up. Reporter friday night, loved ones of the housekeeper gathered to remember her. Another curious description in the police affidavit. A witness who worked for savopoulos and took part in the delivering the money changed aspects about the money drop. It is unclear if that will become significant. A lawyer for the suspect Daron Dylon Wint called the case against him circumstantial. Thomas. Kelly, thank you. History is being made today in ireland with voters across the catholic country saying yes to gay marriage. Nbcs chief global correspondent bill neely joins us. Reporter good morning, erica, from dublin. The counting is almost over and the vote is set to make history. In the u. S. The issue is decided by individual states and supreme court. Here in ireland, they do things differently. Everyone decides. Its the big day in ireland. One couple voting yes on their wedding day to samesex marriage. If you wanted to you should get married just like we have today. Reporter ireland is asking all its people yes or no to gay marriage. The vote counting suggests yes will be the answer. For many it will be a personal victory. Im asking the person i love and me be treated the same way any other couple is treated. Reporter ireland was one of europes most traditional conservative and catholic countries, but the churchs power faded and homosexuality and divorce becoming legal two decades ago. In many rural areas and many older men, legalizing gay marriage is a step too far. One they may now have to accept. It is a change irelands Prime Minister pushed. It is removing inequality. Reporter for critics of what may become the new law this is a bad day. Every child has a right to a mother and father. Reporter but all the signs suggest campaigners for samesex marriage can celebrate a historic change as ireland becomes the first country in the world to legalize it in a national vote. And leaders from both sides are now accepting the yes campaign has won. The only question is how big is their margin of victory. Many people in the country are still rubbing their eyes in disbelief at how far and how fast ireland has changed socially from a deeply conservative to a liberal country. Erica. Big change in a short period of time. Bill nice to see you. Thank you. The senate had a busy overnight session on the blocking of the nsa collection. Sheinelle is here. We think they would high tileail it out for the weekend. It now hangs in the balance set to expire in a week. It started when the driver in the convertible with signs of victory, refused commands to pull over by police. It went on for miles until a Good Samaritan walked in front of the car. He was brave. He stood in front of the guns aimed at him. The trigger could have gone off. Both men taken into custody. The driver is facing several charges. Why not . Im a little tired. Ill wait for a second. You would not see me do that. You would not see me do that at all. Good for him and other successful walks. Congratulations. Sheinelle, thanks. Dylan is back with the rest of the forecast. You are getting paid by appearance . Local weather folks, get ready. Thats it. Thats the look at the weather across the country.
