rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. otherwise known as day two of matt's 226-mile charity bike ride. he's in coventry rhode island. you look great. you're biking from boston to new york. we're wearing the ridiculous red noses for you. that's all we're doing for you. >> thank you. i really appreciate the support. i can feel the teamwork, savannah. we are on day two. it's a lot different than day one. yesterday was about 75 degrees and sunny and just perfect. ideal conditions for cycling. today it's a lot colder in the 50s. there's a bit of a wind. and we're going to go 65 miles today from here in rhode island. we started earlier at the state house. we've already gone 14 miles. we're going from here in rhode island down to new london connecticut. we've got a lot of work ahead of us. the word for the course is hilly. >> that's what i heard too. it's long but it's hilly. so enjoy that. >> good conditions though. cloud cover and cooler it's good for the hills. >> it's true. as a runner natalie, you know this is what you look for. you're not wanting hot weather. >> we'll check in throughout the morning. but we want to get to our top stories. what one police veteran is call calling the most violent and gruesome crime scene he has worked. it is into the brawl between rival biker gangs in waco texas. what's the latest on all of this? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. this all unfolded in the busy noon hour here. more than 200 gang members inside the restaurant behind me spilling out into the parking lot. what police call an all-out perp battle between five outlaw biker gangs. police describe it as absolute chaos. the shootout between rival biker gangs in the central town of waco. when it was over nine were dead at least 18 hurt. witnesses say bodies were scattered throughout the parking lot. >> this is the worst crime scene, the most violent crime scene. >> reporter: authorities were on the scene before the violence tipped off that at least five rival factions would be at the twin peaks restaurant. it happened as families gathered for sunday lunch unaware of possible trouble. >> i was there. my husband was in there. the gang members started shooting people. >> reporter: police say more than 150 gang members were involved in the fight. more than 100 were arrested. in the aftermath, hundreds of knives guns chains and clubs were found at the scene. >> there were multiple people on the scene firing weapons at each other and turned on our officers. >> reporter: as gunfire spilled from the restaurant to the parking lot, some customers hid in the restaurant freezer. what may have been a life-saving move. no bystanders were among the dead. overnight the local twin peaks restaurant posted online that they have a good working relationship with police. and that will continue during the investigation. within the last 30 minutes, waco police have told us that's a lie. it's their quote that they've known about and been preparing for this for two months. reached out to not only the local restaurant but corporate headquarters and got no response. savannah and natalie, back to you. >> jay gray at the scene, thank you very much. breaking news out of hawaii overnight. a u.s. marine osprey crashed after a hard landing killing one and hospitaling others. >> reporter: these marines were on a training mission when it exploded into disaster. the osprey was in helicopter mode attempting to land when it suddenly crashed and exploded into flames. one marine was killed 21 others wounded injured. many of them seriously. and while marines are searching for a cause for this crash, there is a rare phenomenon with helicopters and ospreys that if it's attempting to land too fast it can actually push out the air from beneath the aircraft creating a vacuum and the aircraft will drop like a rock. this has been a really terribly tragic week for the marines at camp pendelton in california. first six of their marines killed in the crash in nepal while on an earthquake relief mission. now this crash in hawaii. marines also from pendelton. the cause for both crashes still under investigation. >> all right. jim miklaszewski thank you. another big story the pentagon is watching this morning. isis militants are now in control of the iraqi city of ramadi. that is just 60 miles west of baghdad. one official saying the city has fallen. nbc's keir simmons has the latest for us. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah good morning. this is without question a blow for baghdad and washington just days after its daring u.s. special forces raid killed an isis commander and a key iraqi city has fallen to isis. and parts of ramadi are shown to be abandoned by an iraqi army that was supposed to be on the offensive. iraqi security forces appeared to flee ramadi in the isis advance. the video shows humvees packed with iraqi military in full retreat. leaving a crucial city seeming deserted. isis affiliate showed isis walking the empty streets. a hospital ransacked. video also has intense fighting. the secretary of state insisting this morning isis remains on the defensive. it is possible to have the kind of attack we've seen in ramadi but i am absolutely confident in the days ahead that will be reversed. >> reporter: there has been an intense air campaign to save ramadi. a city 80 miles west of baghdad. the u.s. has sent weapons and is providing training. >> we're getting reports minute by minute. but we believe over 500 people have been executed or died in battle. >> reporter: 8,000 have fled in recent days. behind them isis controls much of their city and the military base. packed with weapons. anbar is of course the region where so many americans died during the iraq war. but an iraq official tells me he believes it fell to an isis group with just hundreds. while a group of thousands are trying to liberate the city. >> keir thank you so much. the war in iraq is still dominateing the republican presidential race. in the wake of jeb bush's fumbles last week some of his colleagues getting interviewed on that. marco rubio had a fiery back and forth after whether or not the iraqi war was a mistake. >> it was not a mistake for the president to decide to go into iraq. because at the time he was told -- >> i'm not asking you that. >> the sworld a better place because hussein is not there. >> they say there's an important distinction between the information he had at the time of the investigation and what we know now. both said if he knew the information was false, he would not have invaded. rand paul said they should be asked if it's a good idea to topple secular dictators. saying we're at a greater risk from isis than we were before saddam was removed from power. meantime amtrak is getting back on track this morning reopening the track from philadelphia to new york. nbc's tom costello is at the 30th street station with this up and running has been critical. meantime the ntsb investigation remains wide open. this morning the northeast corridor is again open for business. the site of last tuesday's crash cleaned up. telling me new government ordered safety upgrades are already in place. >> everybody on this railroad has been emotional about this. focused and committed to safety. this is a safe railroad to ride. we know it. >> reporter: among the new safety upgrades trains entering the curve where amtrak 188 derailed last week must slow to 45 down from 50. and an automated braking system is now operational for northbound trains too. meanwhile investigators looking into the cause of the crash say engineer brandon bostian doesn't remember the crash. they are looking at this grapefruit sized impact in the windshield. was someone thrown at the train before the accident? two other trains operating that night may also have been hit. it's been going on for years. kids throwing everything at kids from the ground and also from up here. locals say it happens when kids are bored. >> many kids just throw rocks at the train. playing here and trains come by. >> reporter: often? >> yeah often. >> reporter: if train 188 was hit, did it disorient the engineer when he was supposed to be slowing down not speeding up? >> we are going to get though bottom of it working with our colleagues and ntsb. >> reporter: american pharoah was not slowed down by the rough weather. just one win away from the first triple crown since 1978. how confident is his jockey and what about the owners? we'll talk to them. we begin this half hour with a strange mystery in washington, d.c. police are trying to identify what they're calling a person of interest in a case where a home was burned down and four people were found inside killed. nbc's national correspondent peter alexander has the latest on this story fors up. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this is an awful case and it's baffling investigators. we are in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in all of washington, d.c. this is the home. now the scene of an arson investigation. investigators say the fire here was quote, very suspicious. they have one significant clue and are asking for the help of people throughout this community. it's a piece of surveillance video. this morning investigators want to know who this is. calling the individual seen in this surveillance video a person of interest in the murders of four people. the mystery an the manhunt began last week after firefighters responded to a fire at the home of savvas savopoulos and his wife amy. the other victims their 10-year-old son philip and alicia figueroa. >> there were injuries. appeared to be blunt force or sharp injuries on three of the four victims. >> reporter: the person of interest was possibly found driving the family's porsche. >> it's a black porsche convertible. behind the church. >> reporter: the savopoulos family lived in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods blocks from the vice president's home. >> this is shocking. this neighborhood is pretty quiet and tranquil. >> reporter: authorities believe the attack may have started as early as wednesday, one day before the fire. that's when savvas savopoulos left a message for another of the family's housekeepers telling her not to come to work. his wife following up the next morning saying i'm making sure that you don't come to work today. still unclear why anyone would want to harm the family. >> the first thing i'd want is who did it. if i don't have that i want to know why was it done. >> reporter: the savopouloses also have two teenage daughters who were away at boarding school. days before abigail savopoulos posted this moving statement to her mother. washington, d.c.'s police chief says there were no signs that this was random or of any forced entry. some neighbors in this specific neighborhood have reported aggressive activity, aggressive suspicious activity by a door-to-door salesman just before the fire. >> such a strange one. peter alexander, you'll stay on it. thank you. the fbi investigating a passenger's troubling claim that he hacked into a plane from his seat and briefly took control of the engine. kerry sanders is in the cockpit of a jet in ft. lauderdale. kerry, is this even possible? >> reporter: it's hard to believe that somebody who's in the back of the plane could somehow hack into the controls up here in the cockpit. but this hacker claims that he was able to tunnel through the tv entertainment system which is in the headrest of the seat in front of him. he was able to get up into the front of the plane and take control. now the fbi and you newted airlines are taking his claims seriously. >> we're trying to make the system safer and better secure. >> reporter: chris roberts is either a hacker that uncovered a dangerous back door. >> it is definitely possible to manipulate the electronics through the in-flight entertainment system and satellite communications to get to the aifonics of the plane. >> reporter: the fbi says in a newly released affect roberts claimed he hacked through an entertainment and in one case caused one of the engines to climb. while agents continue to look for evidence of that the fbi issued a statement late sunday. there is no credible information to suggest an airplane's flight control system can be accessed or manipulated from its in-flight entertainment system. roberts has now stopped giving interviews but on sunday tweeted, my only interest has been to improve aircraft security. but there's widespread skepticism about his claim. recently retired commercial airline pult jim tillman. >> the folks at airbus and boeing are far too smart to create some system like that. it's just ridiculous. >> reporter: tech writer bob sullivan is also skeptical, but -- >> there's a long history of computer hackers who are on the right side of things tinkering, maybe around the edges of the law. and we don't want to shoot the messenger here when the messy have a good message. >> reporter: the gao released a report this month that said any cockpit that has connectivity should be considered open and potentially open to a threat. natalie, savannah? to acceptance. everyone supports him, but it's okay to have every emotion. there is this sense of death that people around feel and he understands that. but he's not going anywhere. and, you know sometimes kendall and kylie get emotional over that and feel like their dad's gone. but they understand that they've gained someone else that is just as -- the same person although a little bit different and everyone is just a new chapter. >> yeah. you know before the interview i spoke to kris jenner in the hallway for about 15 20 minutes. she said one of her concerns was she hoped people would be nice to bruce. she was worried about bruce. she said bruce, maybe you can live in the hills of malibu and do everything you want there. but then come down and be bruce. all of this to protect and his three brothers once more. they now live in temporary housing in the basement of a church. >> it's bad. i never thought i was going to be where i'm at. yeah. i wish i could do things to make it better. >> reporter: after being in what she describes as an abusive relationship she left the boys' father and lost the family home in the process. >> i ended up going into a depression. sorry. just kind of spiraled out of control. >> reporter: now living in the shadows of wealth dylan says he doesn't feel poor. >> i wouldn't consider us poor because if we were poor we wouldn't be in a house or have a roof over our head or food. >> reporter: but the reality is the family wouldn't get by without help from the united way and community support. one thing melinda wants to ensure her boys have is a good education. she didn't finish high school. >> to one day be men and have families of their own and don't want them where i'm at. it's not a good place to be. >> reporter: every morning dylan and his brothers board a bus back to the working community to go to school. but dylan's school has gotten behind. extra tutoring has gotten him back on track. it's on the football field where dylan finds could only find a flying skateboard in the pages of a comic board or hovering through movies like "back to the future ii." today investigators greg and jill henderson are turning what was once just a vision of the future into reality. so we saw this technology almost 30 years ago in "back to the future." >> yes. >> reporter: how come we don't have the technology to do that? or do we? >> we're closer than the used to be. >> reporter: this hover board floats over a copper surface just inches off the platform. there's no friction at all. so once you get going, you can't slow down. whoo. i'm closest thing yet to swimming like our dolphin cousin. but if i could take one super power, it'd have to be superhuman speed. bond flew away from the bad guys. so 15 years later, where's my personal jet pack? turns out it's right here and plenty of daredevils are embracing it despite the obvious risks. while studying engineering at arizona state, jason created his own version that's a bit more down to earth. >> this is the jet pack. this is a device that makes people run a lot faster. it puts out 15 to 20 of thrust. it pushes you along and carries you up. >> reporter: it's designed for soldiers carrying a heavy pack. but how much faster could it make me? >> give it a go. >> reporter: okay. off we go. i feel like i'm going to fly. running with this thing feels like you've got a strong wind at your back. you're going faster with less effort. predicting what will catch on in the future is always tricky but if it includes having rockets at our fingertips i'll be there as fast as i can. >> i see a whole new olympics coming up. >> superhero olympics. >> everything you saw, what's cool about this, came from independent do it yourself type engineers. and it was really interesting to see how far they're taking this technology and where they see it going. >> i feel like i would have tripped. >> it's weird. it lifts you up off your feet a bit. >> how heavy is it? >> you electrified the crowd. people were so excited to see you. what was that moment like after all you've been through? >> it's really hard to explain in words. humbling yes, because i wasn't sure when i walked out what the reception i was going to get. but the best part of that whole thing was, yes, the cheering but having my daughter and wife there and being able to be there. because last year at that time i was in the hospital. so it was a blessing. >> tell me what you went through. i mean this is a very vicious form of cancer you had to deal with. >> yeah it was. but one of the things i found out is surround yourself with great people. the prayer cards and letters i received were just overwhelming. and to have my family my brothers my wife, my daughter every time they walked in they had a positive attitude. >> you decided to write about this. the title of the book kelly tough. you're really seeing it in a different way. >> absolutely. i never knew what kelly tough meant until i actually saw my father this man i always knew to see him struggle. it was hard for me being his little girl. so i just wrote my heart and all we had gone through and just what god did in the midst of my father's suffering. >> and the book touches not only on your battle with cancer but an incredibly heart breaking experience you had with your son hunter who passed away when he was just 8 years old and had a rare genetic disease. tell me what that experience taught you as a family because reading the book you really see how it pulled you together. and somehow you were able to rise to the occasion. >> absolutely. i don't think we would be who we are without hunter. he taught us unconditional love sacrifice. he taught us you know the gift of faith. i mean we know god now because of hunter. and he -- we could not put into words all that he's brought us. in his short amount of time. you know certainly erin and her sister cameron are who they are because of him. >> the book talks about faith as something you came to later in life. not something you necessarily grew up believing but now the such an important part of your story. >> it sure is. you know the way jill and i were brought up we were brought up catholics. but the whole thing overall, we live and learn. and you grow and daddy finally gets it now. it took a little time but i get it. i'm so blessed no not only have all the support i've had. not only the times i've played the games of football and now my battle with cancer. and also raising two girls. i should say three counting my wife. but we had fun and we continue to enjoy ourselves. thank the good lord every day for the blessing we have. i'm just glad to be here. >> and one blessing is today is your 19th wedding anniversary. so congratulations. >> they're out there for the permanent record. don't do anything stupid. don't put posts up that will embarrass you or a future employer. and have a linkedin profile that's a mini version of your resume >> wow. >> we're not used to that anymore. you fast forward through that which the advertisers don't like. >> and we don't suggest that you do that. it pays our salaries. >> yes. so some good news finally to report on the amtrak derailment from last week. finally trains are back on the east corridor. they're running again for the first time since the fatal crash on tuesday night which killed eight people. and now the train's engineer brandon bostian as you've heard still doesn't remember the crash according to investigators. though he is cooperating. he has answered all of their questions. there are some questions, however. the fbi is looking into whether or not something could have been thrown at the windshield of the train. apparently it's common along that route for kids to throw things. they're looking at what appears to be a grapefruit sized crack on the windshield. however the ntsb has even said they're down playing that theory that a projectile caused the accident. the good news is the amtrak ceo said now that they've put the safety upgrades into place along that part of the corridor, that automatic braking system, sounds like things got off to a good start this morning. and so now we'll see where this goes from here. but what's interesting is there is a new report in the associated press that for the first time, amtrak may be facing a $200 million payout to the train crash victim. that is the limit that was set by congress. which when you think about it there were 200 passengers on that train. you know, $2 million cap is not a lot. and eight fatalities. when you think about for plane crashes, for example, the per cap damage -- on damages is about $160,000. >> interesting. this weekend i rode with matt in the tour de red nose and for the first time thinking about how i was going to get up there, i felt more nervous about the idea of taking a train than flying. so i ended up taking a shuttle over. >> it's interesting. >> and listen, there are thousands and thousands and thousands of train trips every day that go off without a hitch. but between the one in california last year and metro north and this all of a sudden a mode of transportation you take for granted. >> we do. and peter alexander's report last week said there are six times more accidents in train tracks in the last couple of years than there have been flights crashes or other accidents. >> many are asking why the safety upgrade over the weekend why did it take this awful accident for it to be put in place. there's been a lot of debate about funding. the funding was available. the timing for whatever reason this morning on the transportation secretary was asked that about why is it that there's been i think she pointed out three accidents specifically where the safety improvements were made after a tragedy. >> and don't even start about the railroad crossings. i mean, those are crazy. because you were saying that your concern this weekend was whether or not you feel comfortable on the trains. this story made me think about flying this weekend. this hacker, his name is chris roberts. he now claims that he hacked into a commercial jet electronic system. he said he briefly took control of the cockpit. he hacked into the entertainment system up to 20 times, is what he's saying. and he caused the engine to climb resulting in a lateral or sideways sideways move from the airport. here's what chris roberts said is possible in the air. >> it is definitely possible to manipulate the electronics through the in-flight entertainment system. >> the fbi said there's no credible information to suggest a flight control system can be accessed from the in-flight entertainment system. roberts tweeted yesterday my only interest is to improve aircraft safety. >> did he showed them he could do this? >> i don't know if he showed or described in detail. my question would be would a pilot have noticed it and why didn't an airline report some kind of mysterious motion? if anywhere were to notice it it would be a pilot, maybe. obviously i'm not qualified to say that. >> and why would you hack and maybe cause a problem on a plane that you're on? >> right. maybe he didn't think he could pull it off and then did. >> meanwhile, boeing says it's impossible to do this. and a lot of people are casting doubt on whether or not maybe he's just looking for, you know, fame or celebrity. >> i'm from the school of thought now that anything is possible. yeah. >> is that illegal? could he have been charged? >> absolutely. and, listen. the fbi and other agencies have hired and they've actually openly courted some of the best hackers out there because these guys and women who do this, they can infiltrate -- we know it's not just domestically. >> you want them on your team rather than against you. speaking of big awards, which we weren't, but i thought i'd throw that in. >> good segue. >> taylor swift. is this the year of taylor swift or what? >> well, i wanted to do it because afghanistan has been such a part of our culture for the last 13 years. i wanted to document how we left that country and what we accomplished or what we failed to accomplish. so we have an accurate record. one day when we look back on this country and have perhaps a debate about nation building or not. then we have something to reference. meaning this project respective of so many different soldiers in afghanistan. from two-star generals embedded with all the way down to the specialist who is are sort of engaged in direct combat operations. >> you worked there and you are also a father. what was it like for you to see the men and women who are parents who were still there and many times not in the headlines anymore. what was that like? >> i met such wonderful, smart, capable people. there's a conception out there that maybe after 15 years the military is beat up and stuff. what i saw was the opposite of that. i saw a man that has been battle tested and hardened. and young men that were well trained. you know really committed to their missions. and would actually walk towards the bullets. that's what amazed me the most. most people want to go the other way. these guys want to destroy the enemy. and so it's really interesting to be embedded with them to see their commitment. we've all heard about it but to see it first hand it was powerful. >> unbelievable. well it's a really moving documentary. people need to check this out. book taking a stand. senator paul will speak at the people's plaza on independence pal. we are just one day away from the primary election and the candidates in the race for philadelphia mayor are making a final push for votes. six democrats will face off this the primary. according to our polls jim kenny is in the lead during the final stretch. nbc 10 teamed up with the daily news and it. the symptoms of an asthma attack can mirror a food allergy. doctors in ohio analyzed data on 600 kids. they were tested for peanut sensitivities. more than half had never before been suspected of having a food allergy. if your kids are in preschool, they might not be getting enough active play time. researchers in seattle fitted children from ten different centers with devices that measure movement. the average child only logged 48 minutes of physical activity each day. national guidelines recommend two hours a day. the children spent about 70% of their day in sedentary activities or taking naps. there's new evidence that having a working mother in the house has some important benefits for children. according to a new study published in "the new york times," daughters of working mothers completed more years of education they were more likely to be employed, and earned higher incomes. re in the u.s. daughters of working mothers earn 23% more than of daughters of stay at home mothers. a train slammed into a bus in georgia last week. these were the separate seconds just before a freight train hit the back of the bus. and you can see the passengers there running for their lives. six people suffered minor injuries. the bus driver has been issued a citation for improper stopping on train tracks. one of the nation's most iconic toy stores are closing its doors. fao auditioned on just a whim? >> you know, i had a baby three weeks before my audition. so i was literally -- it was a whim because i just wanted to get out of my house and i had pumped enough breast milk to leave that day. that was the only reason i went. so i really felt because i was so nervous to be considered with such an incredible cast, the only reason i got the role was because i really didn't care. you know. >> you threw it all out there. >> yeah. and hobbled in there. >> you mentioned the baby, so there's something in the water? did you give brooklyn something? >> that's my baby yeah. >> your little nugget is due. >> we were watching through the instagram account and the announcement came. how did it feel to share the news with your fans? >> it was a thing to share the news. we weren't planning on it but with the show, i'm over the halfway point so it's hard to hide. >> there's nothing there. >> it looks big. >> nothing. i looked very close. >> it grows. it does. >> give brooklyn any advice for mommyhood? >> i don't think she should take it, but i would. >> she's been helpful. she went back to work with a 13-week-old and she auditioned at a 3-week-old. she's taking >> well, it was a lot better about 20 seconds ago until i heard my daughter just talk about me. but i feel pretty good. thank god that i'm here. >> look how god provides. and also -- >> anybody. >> good. >> we learned to get that in. >> that's awesome. >> you had two bouts jim. the first time they told you, you were cancer free and everything was great and then it came back again? >> yeah. first time, and i've said this differently a couple times, i have my wife correct me, a lot of the things i went through i don't remember. >> yeah. >> i don't remember being in new york city hospital for six weeks. i thought i was only here a couple. >> wow. >> but they removed my jaw first and then after that is when the cancer came back and it came back tough. then i had to go through my 45 radiation treatments and a bout of chemo and that was tough on me but the reason i got through all this was because of the support and prayers i got from everyone. all my nfl family as you well know. but my daughter erin and my wife jill and my daughter cameron, my brothers, one of the things -- and to make a long story short, every time you walked too my hospital room they walked in with a smile on their face. never a frown. they made my day better being there. that's what people with cancer or -- that are sick in the hospital need. they need to have positive encouragement every single day. >> a lot of daughters would have kind of maybe got into the fetal position and hoped it went away, but instead you wrote this book. you're sharing this. how -- was it cathartic to write it? >> i just wanted to share the hope we had and to encourage people going through their own circumstances, because everyone has a story. we're maybe the kelly family, but everyone has their own circumstances, their own struggle and we just wanted to share and encourage people in the midst of our suffering to look to the strength of god. >> and you had been through a terrible tragedy as a family even before all of this happened. jill, tell us about that time. >> hunter. we miss him every day. >> yeah. >> yes. >> the loss of a child is something, it's the greatest nightmare any people could ever go through and yet through hunter's suffering we found our faith in god and not only that, we know how to love unconditionally and all the things that we could have never learned without hunter's life. we are so blessed by him. we miss him, but every day is one day closer to seeing him again some day. >> when the two of you are together, you can tell there's love between you two. is today your wedding anniversary?
