>> reporter: hi matt. good morning to you. as you said more than 100 arrests in new york city alone. here in baltimore, more peaceful protests last night as we get our first glimpse at what may be included inside freddie gray's death investigation. overnight, across country wave of protests in support of baltimore. in new york city demonstrators clashed with police. dozens there were arrested. it's still unclear this morning just what happened to 25-year-old freddie grey in the back of that police van. this morning, the washington post reports that a steel baltimore police document says a man shared the van with gray telling investigators, he her gray banging against the walls of the van believing he wanted to injure himself. >> that prisoner in jail was separated from gray with a metal partition and couldn't see him. our nbc affiliate in baltimore says there are no evidence to support these games claims and the police commissioner said the trip was calm and quiet. it was widely anticipated that baltimore police would publicly release their investigation tomorrow. the department says instead it will turn that information over to the state attorney's office. >> we can't put out more information. it may jeopardize the case itself if anyone needs to be prosecuted. >> reporter: that is adding fuel to the frustration. when people find out justice will not happen by friday what next? >> we have to make sure whatever news we get on friday we have to continue to do this. >> reporter: court records reveal gray had a long rap sheet with a series of arrests for allegedly dealing drugs, assault and burglary. and late wednesday, 101 people nearly half of all those arrested were released from police custody because officials say police didn't cover the proper paperwork. the commissioner says they could be prosecuted. >> a lot lying on that police report we are waiting to see. thanks. one of the more attention grabbing images from the unrest in baltimore was the scene of a mom scolding her son, even hitting him repeatedly for taking part in the protest. now she and her 16-year-old are talking about the incident baltimore mom toya graham has been hailed "mother of the year" after she was caught on video smacking her 16-year-old son when she found him participating in rioting that gripped the city. she and her son talked about the incident. >> i'm not angry with him anymore. as long as i have breath in my body he will not be on the street selling zrug drugs. he will not live like that not with me. >> i understand how much my mama really care about me. so i got to try to be better. >> michael was asked why he wanted to join the protests on monday. >> at first, i was like i don't care i don't care about the law, like police but like my mother talked to me about it. she was just like what did they do to you? did they ever hurt you? i'm like no they didn't hurt me but my friend is not here because of what they did. >> but michael's mother is facing some backlash for beating her son in a public manner some questioning the hypocrisy of praising graham in baltimore. in her part graham says she was only concerned with protecting her son. >> i worry about him walking out my front door. i do. it's just the life that we live around here you don't know if you walk out the door if you are going to walk back in the door or not. >> it's a real moment. i think for the last couple of days a lot of civil rights leaders, community leaders, stood in front of those officers as a message as well. so we are not going to let the kids we get your point, but we also want to let you know you have to do this in a peaceful way. >> i see that tape of raw emotion willing to do anything to protect her son. >> absolutely right. there is another remarkable rescue now in the wake of that powerful earthquake in nepal, a teenage boy found alive in the bottom of the massive pile of debris. nbc's miguel almaguer is there. good morning to you. >> reporter: certainly, that's why searchers are pouring if from all over the globe. they are calling this a miracle rescue one the entire the i is rallying around. this is where the cry for help became from beneath this twisted concrete and metal, a teenager's withering voice is found by a search team. he has been here five day, say locals trapped inside a hotel. los angeles urban rescue a block away with search dogs when they get the call scramble to assist. the rescue was fraught with danger. >> right now you have to worry about the ceilings. >> reporter: buildings everywhere her are on the brink of collapse. search teams will risk lives to save one. six perilous hours into the rescue. this is the moment that they rally, a 15-year-old boy, finally pulled from the rubble carried away by the men and women that saved his life. how can you save six days in those conditions? >> it's amazing he was still able to be there alive . . while touring africa for his family's foundation, one omplt engines on his propeller plane cut out shortly after takeoff. the pilot returned to the airport where the problem was repaired. meanwhile, here at home, a move by hillary clinton is raising eyebrows. the democratic candidate distancing herself from crime policies put in place from her own husband's administration. >> reporter: hillary clinton is carving out her own identity as a candidate, even if that means contradicting policies of the clinton white house, her husband. hillary clinton in her first speech as a candidate, breaking rafrgs with the key part of her husband's legacy. a cough anti-crime bill now blames some of the problems dividing communities like baltimore. >> we have to come to terms with some hard truths about race and justice in america. >> reporter: among other reforms, clinton called for an end to the era of mass incarceration. but that is a rejection of tough measures called into law by bill clinton in 1994. with hillary clinton looking on. but it's led to the imprisonment of hundreds of thousands of men, largely black men, for relatively minor offenses. bill clinton now concedes we have overshot the mark. hillary clinton says republicans like rand paul agree with the reform. but rand paul's campaign tweets her saying she was trying to undo some of the harm inflicted by the clinton administration. crime isn't the only issue on which hillary clinton is parting from her husband's policies as president. he backed the federal law as between a man and woman, a move he now regrets. hillary clinton fully embraced gay rights in this campaign. bill clinton also promoted trade deals. she is skeptical. do you have concerns about the trade deal? >> any trade deal has to produce jobs and raise wages and increase prosperity and protect our security. >> reporter: the clinton campaign is trying to play down differences between the candidate and the former president. but while he was elected, times have changed and hillary clinton clearly is not afraid to run as her own woman. >> thank you very much. meantime hillary clinton is getting her first challenger for the democratic nomination. >> that's right. today, vermont senator bernie sanders will announce he will run as a democrat. >> that makes it easier to get his name on the ballot in all 50 states. he spoke to andrea mitchell about that decision. >> how do you justify running as a democrat when are you an independent? >> 17 years ago right here on the plaza. we got the picture right here. >> i had in ug to doed with with the kids. i'm glad it worked out. i'm glad they are, too. let's head back inside to matt. >> thank you very much. this week marks the 40th anniversary of the fall of saigon. for all intents and purposes the end of the vietnam war. it was a pivotal moment in world and u.s. history. tom brokaw is here to share that. good morning to see you. >> you have as to remember what it was in america. we went through watergate, for example, gerald ford was a new president the war had been going on for 15 years. then the chaos of the ending of that war was beyond traumatic. so i kind of reflected on that as the war. >> let's take a look. >> reporter: no american war had ended in such painful humiliation. 15 eye of american blood and treasure came to this. the u.s. embassy overrun, the communist north triumphant. here at the vietnam memorial wall in washington there are 58 o 300 names and for those people and their families the way the war ended 48 years ago was particularly tragic. for 15 years, it was war in the jungles. in the air. in prison catches andmps. at home on the campuses on the political fields of battle. >> i will not accept the nomination of my party for another term as your president. >> reporter: it brought down one president from within his own party and ignited a fiery contest between senators mccarthy and robert kennedy for the democratic nomination. but bobby didn't make it to the convention. he was murdered by a palestinian fanatic. not too long before dr. king was murdered by a racist excon. 1968 was a violent and bloody year in vietnam and here at home. while at the same time richard nixon arose from the political past to build a new republican party in the south and west. to stay the course in vietnam, while hubert humphrey tried to hold the democrats together and alabama's racist governor try id to divide them. nixon won an escalated the war on the ground and in theary. the anti-war demonstrations escalated and have little impact on nixon and kissinger. we were a country unhinged and deeply divided. nixon crushed him. peace talks opened in paris, but the north knew it had a stronger hand and played tough. while the american role dwindled it did not end until this april, 1975 the north took the south to a chaotic, bloody shameful end. it was finally over. >> tom, in just a couple of minutes, it's hard to capture the turbulence and division present in this country at that time. going back to that vietnam war memorial in washington is an incredibly moving experience. >> for so many young people that's all they know about the war. i have a friend on that wall. i never fail to go by and touch his name. it was very emotional for me. he was a marine captain. he believed in the war as so many of the people who were serving there and died there did as well. i pleaded with him not to go back but he was a very strong old man. he went back and paid for it for his life. >> thank you for putting events 40 years later into perspective. thanks very much good to see you. and we are back in a moment this is "today" on nbc. on comedienne amy schumer. she was just named "time's" most 100 famous people. >> the feature film "trainwreck" will premier this summer. she wrote the screen play and has a role. we visited the scene for an exclusive look. >> i think you butt dialled me. >> no i dimed you with your fingers. >> what did she say? >> definitely i am the first woman to leave howard stern without regreting it. >> is it true? >> it was true. i was sitting in my car in traffic and amy is really warm and funny and brutally honest. she was talking about her family and relationship issues. i thought oh lied like to see her in a movie. >> soon we all can see that movie. amy plays a commitment fooeb phobic writer she falls for his best friend and amy says her role mimics her real life. >> amy, what happened? >> so good. >> that's before you consider the rice. i'm going to show you how to make it for a fraction of the calories. i promise you the taste is to die for. et will's start with the sauce. my secret ingredients is pineapple juice. 3/4 of a cup of pineapple juice, simmer it for it's seven minute source it reduces. soy sauce, low sodium low-sodium chicken stock, a bit of chinese rice wine a bit of toasted says my oil. whisk it up. add in ginger powder pepper flakes a bit of cornstarch or arrowroot and garlic powder. this doesn't get easier than this. now the chicken over here i didn't bread it or fry it. all i did was marinate it in a by of soy sought in the rice wine an egg white, cut it up and just sauteed it. pour it right over here. >> boy, are you pushy. >> look how fast this came together. the sauce thickens up in about a minute. >> it does?
