march 18th 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a wednesday morning. >> you may be enjoying your coffee and if you like to get it from starbucks, you may be interested this this story. they are causing a stir online. there is a new campaign the coffee giant is offering something extra with your latte and it is stirring controversy. >> the people weighing in on both sides. the good and the bad. we will tell you more about that. let's get to the top story. the phone calls to the u.s. embassy threatening to kill ambassador caroline kennedy. officials are not taking this lightly. >> not at all, matt. the calls came in from somebody speaking english. caroline kennedy, daughter of jfk assumed the post in 2013. he is obviously a very high profile figure over there. with the violent attack on another u.s. ambassador just this month, police are investigating how serious this threat might be. all seemed normal with ambassador caroline kennedy who gave a lecture at a university in tokyo. the associated press reports japanese police are investigating death threats against her. the media said the calls remain to the u.s. embassy and came from somebody speaking english. they are looking into the possibility the person might be trying to black mail the 57-year-old mother and diplomat. the embassy did not have a comment, but threats like this against u.s. politicians and diplomats are not uncommon. still the reports come on the heels of the attack on u.s. ambassador mark lippert earlier month. he knifed lippert because of his symbolic representation of the united states. kennedy has been the ambassador to japan for just over a year. they believe the threats made to her are similar to those targeting the consul general in okinawa. adding to the heightened anxiety, michelle obama landed in tokyo this morning. the first lady is kicking off her educational tour promoting schooling for girls. other than the suspected black mailing, no other motive is known. anyone who follows international and domestic politics knows these treats are not uncommon but given the attack on mark lippert who we should say is okay these threats are growing anti-americanism and looked at closely. >> the government's full attention. thank you very much. >> another threat closer to home being investigated by the secret service. an envelope sent to the white house that tested positive for cyanide. kristen welker is at the white house this morning. what are you hearing? >> reporter: according to brian leery the spokesperson with the secret service, the mail screening facility located in the washington, d.c. area received an envelope on monday that was suspicious. initial tests show negative for toxic chemicals, but on tuesday, that chemical tested returned a presumptive positive for cyanide. the envelope has been sent to another facility for more testing and there is an ongoing investigation. this was first reported by the online publication the intercept that said the envelope can be traced to a man with a record with the secret service dating back to 1995 and sent multiple suspicious and disturbing packages over the years. this comes as the secret service is under fire as they drove on to the white house complex, interrupting an active investigation. the secret service director joseph clancy was on capitol hill and said it took five days to learn about the incident and it was an anonymous source who informed him. he hears outrage from both sides of the aisle and lawmakers are calling for heads to roll. >> for sure. kristen welker thank you so much. >> another story getting attention in washington. a resounding victory for benjamin netanyahu. in his country's closely watched election. what does it mean for the u.s. and president obama. the chief foreign affairs correspondent is in tel aviv. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. netanyahu not only won, but won big. the opposition conceded to him. instead of a tie that might force him to moderate hard line stances, he has a clear majority to form a government. in the closing days of the campaign he came out against the creation of a palestinian state. the celebration last night was ruckus in his headquarters before the votes were counted. they know what it means. he is against a palestinian state, a clear reversal of decades of israeli commitments to the u.s. including his own commitment to president obama. this means that the relationship with president obama is going to be more poisonous because on election day, netanyahu appealed to voters to come out and said that the arab-israelis were coming out in droves and foreign money from the u.s. and the state department was financing his opposition and that makes it harder to get along with president obama. it vindicates leaders for inviting him to appear in congress and this will become a big issue for 2016 candidates notably hillary clinton. it has a big effect on america. >> andrea mitchell in tel aviv. we talked a couple of weeks ago when they spoke to congress with the relationship between the president and the prime minister was at an all time low. >> now they are stuck with each other. >> we have new developments in a closely watched case. the robert durst murder investigation. they searched his houston home last night and he was moveed from jail to a secure medical facility. stephanie goss is covering this investigation for us. what have you learned? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. robert durst's defense team fought this transfer. this is about an hour always of new orleans. they needed to be closer to their client to talk about the case and he doesn't suffer from any acute medical or mental condition. they are looking for more information against him. plain clothes officers including investigators from los angeles searched his home in houston tuesday. not long after the heir was seen leaving a courthouse with a grin on his face. durst's defense lawyers said they will use a bond hearing to challenge new gun charges and the arrest warrant for capital murder. he denies killing his long time friend susan berman 15 years ago. >> my concern is the warrant issued in california was issued because of a television show. not because of facts. >> the television show hbo's document the jinx generated enormous attention after the conclusion sunday night. durst mumbling to himself in the bathroom. >> i killed them all of course. >> likely referring to the deaths of his wife neighbor and berman. >> the series did not dictate the investigation. >> it's a unique set of circumstances, but our case is independent of the documentary and will stand on its. >> legal experts believe the prosecution has their work cut out for them. >> we have to see the evidence and how it connects and what significance to give certain pieces of evidence and what insignificance to give others. this is a long way for resolution. >> one of susan berman's closest friends said he may be responsible for his undoing. >> he is a very smart, manipulative human and i don't know that he outsmarted things. he might have been bitten by his own bite. >> durst was never charged in the disappearance of his wife and was acquitted in the murder of his neighbor arguing self defense. his lawyers are eager to prove his innocence this this case as well but they are frustrated they are hung up here in new orleans. >> stephanie goss with the latest. thank you so much. >> natalie is on assignment and tamron is here with a surprise story on a terror arrest. >> a u.s. air force veteran is due in federal court accused of trying to join isis in syria. the chief pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski is here with us. >> he is use born and raised and recently lost his job as an airplane mechanic. he had to fly to turkey with the intent to join isis but instead wound up in custody facing an indictment on terror charges. he is tyra nathan western two. the indictment claims that in january the 47-year-old who was working as an airplane mechanic in the mideast flew from egypt to turkey bound for syria to join isis and their violent jihad. turkey authorities denied him and he was deported to the u.s. secretly arrested by the fbi and held for the past two months. court records claimed his laptop was loaded with 200 propaganda videos and disturbing videos of mass executions. >> even after being discharged so many years ago, this is someone they want to declare his loyalty tow isis. >> born and raised in the u.s. he was an airplane mechanic in the air force from 1986 to 1990. to new york congressman peter king, that makes the alleged crime all the worse. >> it's disconcerting if the charges are true. he ends up being a traitor to his country. >> on his laptop they found what appeared to be a farewell letter to his wife in which he said there only two possible outcomes for me. victory or martyr. he never considered the 30 out come custody in the u.s. >> thank you very much. police are searching for a gunman after an apparent drive-by shooting in stockton california that left three people dead and four others injured. it happened at a grocery store that is popular for groups to gather at night. blue cross was hit by a cyber attack that may have exposed 11 million customers. they may have gained access to clinical access bank account numbers, social security and birth dates. they have not found evidence that customer information has been use inappropriately. meantime kraft foods is recalling 6.5 million boxes of macaroni and cheese because some were found to contain small pieces of metal and it applies to the-ounce size of the original flavor mac and choose best when used by dates of september 18th 2015 through october 11th 2015 are displayed. a fisherman learns the hard way it's not over until it's over. the fisherman in new zealand had a big bite at the end of his line and is winning the battle. take a look. he pulled the fish to the surface and he realizes it's a shark. he swooped in and ripped what was left of the fish and gives that lady a light. i would have fainted. 7:13. >> what's our favorite line? say they were tipped off by someone in the fraternity. the house is facing a lot of trouble. this morning state is the latest dealing with a firestorm as police investigate allegations of a bad behavior. kappa delta is facing suspicious after nude and unconscious women were on facebook pages that were secretly set up by the fraternity. >> it's despicable acts and if you are engaging in that behavior you better rip that page out of your book. it's not acceptable. >> this search warrant reveals the first page was titled covert business transactions. it was shut down when one of the women spotted a topless picture of herself on a page accidentally left open by a fraternity number. a second page titled 2.0 was set up. it included more sexually explicit photos drug sales, and maze hazing. they called it appalling and offensive. >> we are determining which individuals may have been involved. >> it's the latest in a string of headlines. at the university of michigan the sigma alpha chapter has been disbanded after members trashed a ski lodge in january causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. after this video of a racist chant from the university of oklahoma went viral last week today's sigma alpha epsilon is doing an extensive review of their chapters. >> we have a lot of examples of really bad behavior going in secret and a few heroes willing to rat out their frat brothers i think all fraternities will be a lot more ready to engage in the behavior. >> reporter: here at penn state, kappa delta row's headquarters is cooperating fully with law >> they caught a repeat offender in two hours. >> at least a half dozen prior duis. >> we went straight to the governor. >> 45 other states have tougher drunk driving laws. sitting here as the governor for four years, why is that? >> oh, yeah. they are getting weighed and they are healthy and doing really good. >> talk to me about what this has been like. i know the great news is two came home immediately from the hospital and two more came home last wednesday. i know your family and friends and community has really rallied around you. talk to me about that. >> in the beginning with two, it was difficult. we get used to this first two and then i was going back and forth from the hospital to the house. it feels really good to have all four. it's now two seems easier now that we have all four at the house. it has been a blessing and we just are doing our best and i'm feeling really, really grateful for everybody that came together to help us. over 86,000 people donating. >> i want to mention that there is a go fund me.com campaign. people have gone on and donated over $350,000 to help your family. were you surprised by that?
