savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. willie in for matt this morning. you're here on a good day. >> the tree is here. >> tree day. the rockefeller center christmas tree will arrive, gosh, in about an hour. well, it's here. >> it's here. just waiting for us. >> al has to welcome it. >> we're all getting on. >> we are. >> getting on the flatbed. >> we are. meanwhile news. >> like a christmas gift come early. >> this is huge. >> "toy story 4." here's what al and i want to know. who are the people who were not happy about the arriving of another "toy story?" >> the best animated franchise of all time. every single movie was better than the first. >> i guess some people are worried about messing with perfection. >> "3" was about as perfect as it gets so we'll assume that there's a snake in my boot! >> yes, to infinity and beyond. >> a full morning of this. >> i know. >> may the force be with you. >> boys in the water hole. >> what about "star wars," the new title, "the force awakens." >> a lot to talk about today. >> al's favorite story today, return of the polar vortex. want to show that little dance you were doing. >> the vortex dance. >> the polar vortex dance. let's show you what we've got going on. this is what's so great about weather. everything is interconnected. we've got the strongest storm on the planet right now approaching the aleutian islands. this is super typhoon nuri, and what it's going to do is cause a big buckle in the jet stream, and so what that is allowing now is the jet stream to take a really big dip south further than it normally does. this semi-permanent polar vortex is going to be allowed to make its way further south. and not just into the plain states, but by the end of next week it will be as far south as northern florida, and these temperatures going to affect really over 240 million people. so tuesday, denver, 36, 41 kansas city. you notice new york city will be above average, so will atlanta, but then wednesday it moves further south, nashville at 45, chicago 36, raleigh at 70, but new york starts to dip and then on thursday new york's 11 degrees below average. myrtle beach 58 and new orleans 61 degrees, and by friday, look at these temperatures, we're talking chicago 34, 38 kansas city, nashville 42. the good news, guys, we don't have any major storms coming across with this brutally cold air, but we are going to be looking at these temperatures hanging in right until next weekend. >> all right. you'll be dancing all next weekend. >> oh, yeah, especially once we start roker-thon at 10:00 p.m. here on nbc. >> setting a record. >> 34 hours in a row doing a weather forecast. >> amazing. al, drink your flids. >> we'll help with you coffee. >> refills. >> gear up. >> all right, al. thanks a lot. the president welcomes congressional leaders to the white house today. the get-together will mark their first face-to-face meeting since tuesday's massive victory by republicans in the mid term elections but can a lunch really do anything to break the long-standing gridlock in washington? nbc's white house corpse kristen welker has more on that. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning to you. 14 lawmakers are expected for launch here today. no word on whether bourbon will be on menu. the president had, of course, joked about sharing that drink with the likely soon-to-be senate majority leader mitch mcconnell the other day, but on the official agenda, finding common ground with the new republican leaders of congress, but it is a tall task with both sides sounding a lot like they are still at war over key issues. when lawmakers come to the white house today, they will break bread with the president, but it's hard to see them breaking any major new ground. >> when you play with matches, you take the risk of burning yourself. >> reporter: instead of talking about compromise, house speaker john boehner warned the president thursday don't go around congress to fix the country's broken immigration system, something the president vowed to do, even after democrats' bruising defeat this week. >> i believe that the president continues to act on his own he is going to poison the well. >> reporter: but republicans have drawn their own battle lines, doubling down on their pledge to repeal the president's signature piece of legislation, obamacare, and vowing to approve the keystone pipeline which the president has resisted. >> i'm not going to give an inch, for instance, on repeal of the health care reform. >> you're an american voter. why should you have confidence that anything is going to be different now? >> well, i think that time will tell. >> reporter: but with the 2016 election already looming, time is running out. still, lawmakers say they may be able to find common ground on issues like corporate tax reform, trade and fixing bridges and roads. >> the president should be inviting, i think he should practice humility, and i think he should listen as much as he talks. >> reporter: and as for that much talked about drink of bourbon, a kentucky-based bourbon maker has offered to provide that drink of choice. no plans for the bourbon summit to happen any time soon though. on sunday mr. obama heads to asia just as congress returns from recess the following day. willie, savannah? >> all right, the beer summit and now maybe the buschon summit as well. kristen welker at the white house, kristen, thanks. now moving on to a frightening attack that happened at a hospital in minnesota. a group of nurses violently assaulted by a patient swinging a metal paper, and we should warn you the video you're about to see is disturbing. here's nbc's miguel almaguer. >> reporter: it happened without warning, a 68-year-old hospital patient out of his bed and on the attack, wielding a metal pipe ripped from his room. these wild swings could have been deadly. unsuspecting nurses dodged some of the blows and scramble for their lives. now, a second angle. this hallway cam captures the chaos beyond the doors and then the sprint to safety. one nurse stumbles and is struck twice with the metal pole. the man with the club isn't finished. the battered nurse seriously injured. >> one of them sustained a collapsed lung. another one sustained a fractured wrist. the other two nurses sustained multiple abrasions, cuts and contusions. >> reporter: attacks like this one in st. paul, minnesota used to be rare, but some argue not anymore. osha says health care workers suffer more injuries and illness cases than any other private sector. in 2010, more than 11,000 employees were assaulted. the suspect, charles logan sr. was confronted which the police with a taser and died shortly after being handcuffed. investigators now say they may never know what fueled this terrifying attack. miguel almaguer, nbc news, los angeles. >> scary video there. >> sure is. there's new controversy this morning tied to the raid that killed osama bin laden three and a half years ago. this as the man who may have taken the terror leader's life steps out of the shadows for the first time. nbc's senior investigative correspondent cynthia mcfadden has that story. cynthia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, ex-s.e.a.l. robert o'neill claims he's the one who fired the fatal shot that killed osama bin laden, but another s.e.a.l. says that's not what happened. either way, the pentagon is furious that either man has spoken out. >> our snipers are ready. >> reporter: commanding big bucks as a speaker. >> a lot of the stuff out there is still classified and i want to maintain integrity. >> reporter: excommando robert o'neill never told audiences what he now says was his defining act, that he fired the shot to the head that killed osama bin laden. he says he was one of the first two s.e.a.l.s who tumbled through the door of mladen's bedroom in 2011 taking aim at the terrorist leader and telling the "washington post" in that second i shot him two times in the forehead. bap, bap. that mission is already the stuff of hollywood. >> clear. >> reporter: just as two other raids o'neill says he took part in, the rescue of can't richard phillips. >> s.e.a.l. team 6 inbound. >> reporter: and recovering fellow s.e.a.l. marcus latrelle from behind enemy lines as depicted in the movie "lone survivor." while the pentagon has consulted with writers and film-makers in the past, they are now furious that o'neill and another former s.e.a.l. have spoken out about the bin laden raid. in a stinging public rebuke, s.e.a.l. commander line lohse say s.e.a.l.s should not seek public notoriety and financial gain and warned of cleel consequences for those who place our teammates at risk. the real admiral's letter did not specify whether any s.e.a.l.s had broken that confidence, but the department of justice is investigating former s.e.a.l. matt bissonette who wrote a book about the bin laden raid that he failed to clear with the government. his account differs from o'neill's. he says three commandos fired the shots at bin laden. now out with a new book, "no hero," which he did have vetted, bissonette asked nbc news not to show his face. >> i don't want my face on the cameras. i'm not doing this to beat my chest and tell you i'm somebody cooler than i am, i'm not. >> reporter: but some s.e.a.l.s say just speaking out breaks their code. >> in the age of isis and other emerging global threats, this is a life-and-death matter. s.e.a.l.s can get killed. >> reporter: many in the chain of command object to the notion that any individual would take credit for a mission which involved 24 americans on the ground that night, but pentagon officials privately acknowledge that the government is unlikely to prosecute men many consider american heros. >> cynthia mcfadden, thanks so much. >> let's turn to natalie now. you've got more on how it is that that kidnapping victim was found. >> absolutely. >> outside of philadelphia. >> incredible police work. we are learning this morning about how police were able to rescue that young philadelphia woman whose abduction was caught on tape, and late thursday night the suspect was extradited to virginia to face charges in a separate kidnapping there. nbc's rehema ellis is in philadelphia. raheema, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. the gaither family is home today together healing and grateful for the stunning police work that brought a safe end to a family's nightmare. >> tell us about why you did this, mr. barnes. >> reporter: the arrest of 37-year-old delvin barnes was the result of sophisticated high-tech tools, good old-fashioned detective work and tips from the public that started with a 911 call from a witness as the abduction was taking place. according to the if the complaint, the abduction happened at 9:40 p.m. sunday, notified by the 911 call. police woke up a security guard and got the surveillance video. police say the victim left behind her cell phone so cops would know who had been abducted. monday, 6:01 p.m., police tracking gaither's atm card says barnes used it 100 miles away at a bank at aberdeen, maryland. at a nearby gas station, surveillance video shows him buying several items, including a bag of herr's south cream and onion potato chips. tuesday a maryland woman found broken glass and other items in her driveway. she called police who found a herr's chip bag and a receipt from a philadelphia grocery store from sunday. wednesday, philadelphia police released video of the suspect in that grocery store. separately virginia authorities already had a warrant out for barnes for a violent october assault on a 16-year-old girl. they saw the surveillance video and make a critical discovery. >> it looked very similar to the vehicle that we had known mr. barnes to drive. >> reporter: virginia authorities tracked the car down to a local used car dealer. the car dealer told them he put a gps on the car because the buyer had bad credit. wednesday night, the gps was activated, and within minutes authorities tracked the car down in the jessup, maryland, parking lot where barnes was arrested and gaither freed. today, the family is asking for privacy and time to recover from what's been a terrifying ordeal. natalie? >> really incredible how they put all those pieces together. raheema, thank you. two national guard soldiers were killed thursday night when their apache helicopter crashed near boise, idaho. officials say they were on a night training mission at the time of the crash. the cause of the accident is under investigation. and some new information this morning on that massive air bag recall. according to the "new york times" japanese auto parts-maker takata ordered tech nickses to destroy test results on some of its air bags after finding cracks in air bag inflaters. the tests were carried out after a 2004 accident after an inflator exploded and injured the driver. more than 10 million cars by several automakers have been recalled by takata air bags. a story we first told you about on thursday. a new zealand prosecutor has dropped the most serious charge against ac/dc drummer phil rudd accused of attempting to arrange the murder of two people, but the prosecutor now is dropping that charge due to a lack of evidence. rudd still faces evidence of threatening to kill and drug possession. and it was a night to remember for a young boston bruins fan. this is going to put a smile on your face. he was invited as a special guest of the team as a game earlier this week. 8-year-old liam fitzgerald has down's sin chrome and is a cancer survivor and had a front row seat as the players went back into the locker room after pre-game warmups. he got fist bumps all around from each and every player.
