flying on commercial planes before she was diagnosed speaks out, why she believes she did it nothing wrong. dineer disaster. an suv plows through a crowded restaurant, slamming into customers, pinning two men beneath the buffet line. what the driver says happened, today, thursday, november 6th, 2014. >> from nbc news, this is "today," with matt lauer, and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today." we have josh elliot in fortunately. can we rerack that videotape? >> it's amazing. it's fortunate they kind of slide across the floor with that car as opposed to going immediately under it. yeah, we seen this happen before. usually the car stops much sooner than that. >> wait until you see what happens after this moment. >> we got a lot to talk about the morning. let's get to our top story. that's the dramatic rescue of a 22-year-old philadelphia woman three days after she was attacked and kidnapped t. chilling scene captured on under surveillance cameras. nbc's rehema ellis has more. >> reporter: good morning, mat. carlesha gaither was found pence. overnight, she and her family made their way back home to philadelphia, just hours after the shocking news friends and family had been praying for. >> carlesha freeland has been rescued. her abductor has been arrested. >> her mother was overjoyed. >> thank you for being there for us. i'm taking my baby home. thank you. thank you so much. >> reporter: police say the man hunt that spread across five states finally ended in jessup, maryland. over 100 miles away from where the crime began. authorities say a tip led them to a vehicle in a shopping center parking lot. when the suspect tried to drive off with the kidnapped 22-year-old pence, police surrounded the car. >> when the subject exited the vehicle, he was apprehended and that's when miss freeland was recovered. >> the suspect in custody identified as 37-year-old delvin barnes had six prior violent felony warrants out for his arrest, including another kidnapping. police do not believe barnes and carlesha had any known connection prior to her abduction. >> he's a vicious predator. he's off the streets. hopefully, he'll be in jail the rest of his life. >> the search comes to an end days after the chilling video of the abduction was released, followed by a series of under surveillance videos of a suspect buying groceries and using carlesha's bank card at an atm, 75 miles from where she was taken. last night, friends, family and neighbors turned out to light candles, a sign of gratitude and relief. >> i'm glad. you know, i don't know what else to say. i'm just happy. >> reporter: today, giving carlesha gaither's family everything to celebrate. the suspect is in fbi custody. authorities say he won't be returned to pennsylvania immediately. that's because he's wanted on other charges, another attempted murder and kidnapping charge of a teenage girl in virginia. savannah. >> rehema ellis, thank you very much. charles ramsay is the police commissioner of philadelphia. commissioner ramsay. good morning to you, sir. >> good morning. >> i know you have gotten to know carlesha's family in the last few days. can you tell us about her condition, how she is doing? >> well, she is resting at home now. we brought the family down to howard county hospital last night so they could reunite with her. she was released from the hospital. we brought them back to philadelphia. she's at home now. we're letting them get some rest before we actually continue to interview her. we do have some information. we want to give her a chance to kind of settle down and be with family for a moment. >> what do you know about the suspect in this case? >> he's got a very extensive criminal history. he was already wanted in charles city, virginia for attempted murder, abduction, aggravated assault. i mean, a variety of charges. he was convicted of rain here in philadelphia back in 2005. he has a very extensive criminal history, a violent predator. we are very fortunate to get her back alive. >> i think you called him the thug yesterday. is there any evidence he targeted carlesha in particular? >> well, they didn't know one another beforehand. it could be a chance encounter. we will know more when we have a chance to sit down and interview her and interrogate him. right now, he is being held on charges that were filed by virginia as i mentioned before. so we still got a lot of investigative work to do. but this was a stranger abduction as far as we know right now. >> this case got so much notice, of course, because of that under surveillance video that captured his violent abduction. in your mind, is that piece of videotape what made the difference and led finally to her rescue? >> there is absolutely no question. i have been in policing for 46 years. i've never actually seen a kid naping on video. so it really did add to the sense of urgency him we were able to get it out to the media right away. >> that followed by a couple other pieces of video we were able to obtain through the course of an investigation and that led to a tip of an individual who had sold a car to this person. we also contacted authorities in virginia, found that he had a warrant. we were able to track him to jessup, maryland. we had a task force that was put together that included atf, fbi and the u.s. marshalls service. their baltimore field office actually are the ones who spotted the car, conducted a under surveillance. once he stepped out of the car, momentarily, they were able take him down and not have hostage situation and rescue miss gaither. so it worked out great. and it's unusual. usually the longer these things go the less likely you are to find a victim alive. >> i know you must be very happy to have a happy ending. congratulations on the great police work. philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey. thank you. >> thank you. >> now, let's turn to matt. president obama is now suggesting it could lead to a new wave of compromise in washington but with the general election just two years away, is that possible?
