part of what we're talking about is care giving but you have to be able to assess what is possible for you to do and then take care of yourself with the support system you need. >> i told my sister i'm more concerned about her than my mom because my sister is wearing herself down to the bone and not letting everybody else help. >> the potential burn out. the potential burn out in care givers is a real issue. that's what you're talking about. i think for all of us, it's like the people who care about us when we're the care givers they say you're the person who has to be taken care of yourself. >> you have to be able to get help and accept it. i see so many people -- especially spouses tend to be more vulnerable with this. they aren't getting as much help from other people. i think that's one of the things because you feel like i committed to this. i can do this all but you know what, nobody can do it all. we all need some help. i have to do the same thing. >> sometimes the parent doesn't think they need help. >> yes. >> they don't want you crowding their space. >> yes. >> how do you have that initial converse, a we got to do this. >> i think if you're a parent, the spouse or the child, it's a kind of a different conversation but i this one of the things you say is, you know, i've been in thing some things are changing. it also depends on the type of the illness this person has. if they have a illness where they aren't noticing they are becoming diminished it's another conversation. i have noticed things have been changing but it would be helpful to me if i could help you with some of the things that you always did. i would really like to help you out and partner with you and i'd like to learn. you never diminish the person. you always maintain their dignity and you do what you feel you can do and slowly you take on more ponresponsibility. >> the goal is for people to be as independent as possible for as long as possible. >> they don't want to give up the keys to their apartment or home. >> it's very important. >> i don't want anything to happen to you to hurt yourself but how would you ever feel if you hurt someone else because you had a panic attack or you couldn't see well enough or you forgot where you were. >> when you feel it's the best part of them you go -- oh, that's awful. >> you're caring for your parent and you have a life. how are you staying recharged?
