[ cheers and applause ] and get this, they even quoted his tweets in their decision. or as trump put it, that counts as a retweet. [ cheers and applause ] after the ruling, white house press secretary sean spicer trav h ban is fully lawful. then he was like "sorry, i read that wrong. it's fully awful. my mistake. [ laughter and applause ] sorry about that. i should have read this." i saw that over the weekend melania trump finally moved this is a bad sign. she only brought a week's worth of clothes. [ laughter and applause ] yeah, that's not good. not a good thing. this is pretty big. i saw that yesterday puerto rico voted to become america's 51st state. [ cheers and applause ] that's when you know things can't be in good puerto rico, when they see what's going on here and they're like, we're going to take our chances. [ applause ] right now new york is in the right? it's hot out there, right? temperatures are in the mid-90s. you can tell it's hot. today, times square elmo passed out before he could get drunk. [ laughter and applause ] and finally, i read about a a couple in vermont that is selling their house, and part of it extends over the border into canada. it's really cool. the house has three bedrooms, two baths and free healthcare. >> steve: wow. >> jimmy: we've got a great show tonight. give it up for the roots, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] fantastic. chuck is the a new album. hey guys, there's an organization called a serious fun children's network. you might have heard about it. it was started by paul newman as a camp for kids with serious illnesses. and now they have like 30 camps around the world. and basically, it lets kids be kids. and just have some fun and raise a little hell. anyway, a few years back i teamed up with ben & jerry's on a flavor called tonight dough. [ cheers and applause ] so all the proceeds -- all of my proceeds from tonight go to serious fun, the serious fun children's network. [ cheers and applause ] so i'm proud to say -- i'm proud to say that it is one of the most popular ben & jerry's flavors, but i'm even more proud to say that we have now raised over $1 million. [ laughter ] i would just yell that -- go driving down the street. >> i mean, that wasn't my first car. my first car was a beat-up volkswagen primer green with lawn chairs for a back seat with a hole in the floor. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: that's good ventilation, absolutely. yeah, you need that. did the -- going back to that mercedes one, did that -- did you use the car phone? did you use it? >> i did. you know, i got pregnant really quickly after that, so a a two-seater car wasn't very ideal for a baby. but i still got that car. >> jimmy: you still have it? >> i do. >> jimmy: oh, does the phone work? >> it just might. [ laughter ] >> well, the girls have come to miami, and i am the next door neighbor, along with ty burrell. >> jimmy: i love ty burrell. he's the greatest. [ cheers and applause ] ♪ ♪ >> jimmy: demetrius shipp jr., welcome to "the tonight show" and -- >> oh, man. thank you for having me. it's my first time on a talk show, man. this is -- [ cheers and applause ] this is great. >> jimmy: i love that. >> i love the selection, too. >> jimmy: it's a good selection. yeah, of course, you can't mess with the roots, man. absolutely. now i want to know -- tell us about yourself because this is your acting debut as well, right? >> yeah, so, interestingly enough, i never aspired to be an actor at all. it kind of just came like my best friend who is here with me, he's in the backstage. >> jimmy: yeah -- >> he's like, "dude, you got to do this audition, you know what i'm saying? the casting call for tupac. you got to do that and, you know." >> jimmy: well, where were you at the time? what were you doing? >> oh, i was just working. just regular jobs, you know, trying to make a living -- i was -- >> jimmy: what were you doing? >> i always wanted to be a a music producer. >> jimmy: uh-huh. >> so, you know, working on that and then just doing my regular job. paying the bills -- >> jimmy: what was your regular job? >> target, you know? [ cheers ] shout out to target for the job. >> jimmy: do it, yeah. >> sam's club. sears. >> jimmy: that's great. and did anyone ever tell you that you look like tupac? >> yeah. so that started like in like high school, you know? i went to high school like in tenth grade, i was kicking it with like the seniors, i introduced myself. they was like, "yeah, demetrius is cool, but we going to call you pac." [ light laughter ] just, yeah, that was it. >> jimmy: and where did you grow up? in -- >> carson, california. >> jimmy: in cal -- california, yeah. [ cheers and applause ] so you knew -- >> carson, so obviously. >> jimmy: but that's a cool -- that's a cool thing that you look like tupac, i mean, he's a a good looking dude. [ light laughter ] i mean, yeah -- >> i mean, it could be worse, i guess. >> jimmy: yeah, absolutely. >> yeah. >> jimmy: but then you -- you go on this, what is it, blind audition? i don't understand. how did -- >> so, it was a like online and then he told me to do it or whatever, so i wait to like the last day, i submit the video -- >> jimmy: because you're not an actor. you're -- >> no, yeah. so, i really wasn't going to do it. he had to like badger me to do it. i'm like, "all right, whatever. i'll do it." and so waited to the last day, turn it on the -- like thirty minutes before the deadline and then, shared it on facebook and then my father seen the video. now, the cool thing about that is, my father produced with tupac. he produced tupac's "puffs it up" single. [ cheers and applause ] so -- >> jimmy: really? >> yeah. he seen that and he shared the video with l.t. hutton, the creator and producer of this movie and from then on, the ball got rolling. back in 2011. >> jimmy: 2011? >> yeah. >> jimmy: what year is it now? i -- like what -- >> it's 2017. >> jimmy: thank you. well, what -- we waited six years -- no. >> so, in between this time, i was, you know, stocking stuff at target and sam's club, ringing people up. and you know, try to get the role as well. just trying to -- i guess they had to get the stuff together, you know, it's the bioptics, so, you know how that goes. >> jimmy: yeah, of course. and -- what was your audition like? what did you end up doing? did you have lines or did you -- [ light laughter ] >> so, one of the things was, i had to do this courtroom monologue that tupac does. it's an interview. he's coming out and he's speaking to the press, so i had to re-create that. and then i had to do a, you know, a rap and the whole thing. >> jimmy: wow, i mean, does it -- aren't you nervous to audition in front of people? >> yeah -- >> jimmy: or you just know? >> yeah that -- that time i went in with the casting director and then actual real director. i was like, "wow, what is going on? [ light laughter ] all these lights, all these people. you want me -- you want me to do some rap." [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah. >> okay, let's make it happen. >> jimmy: wow, so then you filmed the movie and now it's coming out and you're getting already great reviews and it's a big deal. >> yeah. >> jimmy: this is like -- this is major. this is the tupac movie that we're all -- been waiting for. i -- i -- i know his hits and i know some of his albums, but i really don't know that much about his life. >> you don't know a lot about tupac, jimmy? [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: i know -- >> you got to have a verse somewhere. come on, jimmy, i know you know a verse. >> jimmy: oh, no, no, no, no, no, no. [ light laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] you're all -- you're all going to thank me for not doing that. [ light laughter ] no, i -- i followed, you know, i know "keep your head up," but i don't know -- all that stuff. i just -- i didn't really, oakland is where he says that he's from -- >> yeah. >> jimmy: but he's not really from oakland, right? >> well, he was born in new york and then he moved to baltimore and then he moved to oakland when he was like a a teenager, like seventeen years old. >> jimmy: gosh, i mean, what -- when did he die? how old was he when he died? >> twenty-five. >> jimmy: gosh, how sad is that? that's just -- is just -- died way too young. >> yeah. >> jimmy: and what are people going to take when they take away when they see this film? >> they're just going to get a a great understanding of tupac. myself personally, i was a fan of the music and i wasn't -- i didn't know the man. this is going to give you an insight to the man. you're going to understand all of the rumors and speculations or anything that you don't know, it'll all be clear within this movie. >> jimmy: i want to show a a clip, here's demetrius shipp jr. as tupac shakur in "all eyez on me." take a look at this. >> it happened to you? >> what happened to me? i got shot five times, that's what happened to me. what happened to you? you used to be down. and it's dangerous. >> it's dangerous getting shot too. >> the man i knew wanted to e his voice to educate, to bring people together. >> if he coming at me, he gone get dealt with. >> can't nobody tell you nothing, huh? huh? >> not about this. >> okay. >> jada!
