through rose-tinted glasses. what everyone sees as annoying, you find as adorable. >> the insurantensity is turned. you want to be around this person all the time. you think everybody else wants them as well. there is a physical attraction and intellectual attraction and hopefully compatibility as well. >> what is the difference between being in love and loving someone? >> well, i think it is more intense. so when you love somebody, you don't mind sharing them. you might even match them up with somebody else. when you are in love with somebody, you don't want them with anybody but you. you plan your life around them. >> when you are falling in love, you are on that roller coaster. it's up, it's down. it's insecure. thank god we don't live like that all the time. >> it changes. it is different when you are young and meet someone for the first time. all of a sudden you have children. children seem to change love in a good way. >> right. >> you know, in the end, i think loving somebody is having that calm secure sense of home base. there aren't necessarily so many highs or lows. there's a sense of expansion beyond the two of you into your friends and family. >> i think it's more normal. it is loving who you are when you are around that person and loving who you can be. it is almost like you help each other to become the person you are meant to be in the best-case scenario. >> that is a good way to look at it. what is the pressure for valentine's day and people not in a relationship? for couples out there who maybe one half of the couple feels more committed than the other. they feel they don't have the traditional commitment symbol whatever it may be. when do you know it is time to maybe cut and run? >> cut and run somewhere else. >> lots of different non traditional relationships today. more people are cohabitating more than getting married. if you are to wake up a year from now and your relationship and your life was unfolding the way you wanted it to you are in the relationship you want to be in. what would the day look like? visualize that and go for that. >> you need to respect your relationship goals. you have to be direct and say i want marriage and i want kids. put it out there. if someone can't give that to you, cut your losses. >> how do you sustain love? how do you make sure it is the love that lasts a lifetime? >> you have to first of all look at a person's character and see if you are looking at life in the same direction. do you have the same goals? do you want the same things out of life and are you willing to help each other to get it? love exists within reality. if that exists with what you want and if it does and match up, that can be damaging. >> you know, studies show that couples who succeed and fails, the salt. right where you are when you have it mixed -- we have it separate because you want the ingredients mixed well. we push this together. then now you really have to go to work as you can tell. yes. then you will mix that up until it is sort of batter-like. >> mixed. >> yeah. i can do that. what you will do is fold in some chocolate chips. if you don't want that, you can use white chocolate. you these boy scouts from honoring an annual tradition in valley forge. why they are braving the bone chilly temperatures. we have arctic front to thank for all this polar air moving into our area. temperatures are very cold right now but we'll be getting colder later on today. hundreds of rowdy supporters rallied behind front-runner donald trump ahead of tonight's gop debate. what the donald said this time to make the crowd roar with laughter. man's best friend but proed ban in philadelphia wants to make sure you're picking out the right kind of dog pet store. we'll explain. those stories scouts are braving the bitter cold in our area to participate in the time honored tradition. we'll explain coming up in a live report. have issued a first alert day here at nbc 10 because of the dangerous cold and arctic air sweeping over the region. if you think it's brutal outside now it's only going to get worse. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. just before 9:00 on this saturday. meteorologist karen thomas is tracking that dangerous weather this weekend and karen, we say dangerous because with the wind chill it feels like it's in the single digits. >> that's right. the wind chill is factored into the already very cold temperature reading in fahrenheit. what we do is we put it together that's what it feels like outside. that's what affects the human skin, the lung breathing capacity and that's why we say dangerously cold because really if you don't have to be outside for any long periods of time today, it's really a good idea to stay warm, stay inside and just really wait for this arctic air, this arctic plunge we're in to subside. it will be subsiding after our first alert weather weekend. we're looking for near record cold overnight tonight into early tomorrow with dangerous wind chills and we can't underestimate the gusting winds out of the northwest, up to 50 miles per hour. so temperature readings right now, 7 in the poconos, 24 in atlantic city, 23 in dover. but we factor in the wind chill and here are the values. this is what it feels like outside. look at the poconos. 12 below zero in read judging. feels like 6 trees in philadelphia. you get the point. whatever you're wearing to head outside throw another on. rosemary? >> a snowstorm caused accidents in southwest michigan yesterday forcing transportation officials there to shut down some major highways. at least four people were hurt. in des moines, iowa winds gusted over 20 miles per hour creating subzero wind chills. very similar to what will happen in our area today and tomorrow. you just heard karen mention that. let's head south. outer banks in north carolina is a popular beach spot in thor time. right now the sand is covered by snow. storm also brought frigid temperatures overnight. back in our area the bitter cold has triggered a cold blue for philadelphia. that's a signal for volunteer to help the homeless get off the streets. nbc 10 was at chosen 3 ministries last night where organizers made sure the less fortunate had hot meals. then they took them to warm shelters to spend the evening. hundred of boy scouts are camping outside in montgomery county. it's an annual tradition. they know the weather can be harsh but this year they came extra prepared. drew smith is live in lower providence township to explain why they are camping out. but now the scouts are getting into some heat? >> reporter: they are very happy. many are boarding to the buses. they are heading to valley forge park where they will learn some history. here at the sea of tents they are worried about the winds because it's been whipping up. this guy is staking down the tarp on top of his tents to make sure it doesn't blow away. look at the flags. it is whipping right here and that's hat will make it so cold tonight the second night of camping. a lot of people tell me they will be returning for a colder night. we shot some video of the boy scouts waking up this morning. a lot gathering around the stove as they found snow and within whipping around. we asked them why would you do this? let's listen to one much their answers. >> it's cold a lot, very cold. and the temps are all frosty. i had two sleeping bags and an insert. it was freezing out. and if you had to go the bathroom, it was horrible. >> he did tell us, though, it was all worth it. it's fun to be out here experiencing all this they are learning a lot about staying warm. medical tents is an important part of this camp site. they have people watch making sure people aren't shivering overnight. a couple of people went in there. they are keeping an eye out for hypothermia and frostbite and they would have to be transported to the hospital. night two will be hard but these boys are very brave about it. i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. i'm sure the experience will help them appreciate having a roof over their heads. volunteers are helping the homeless get off the streets during this extreme cold. dozens streamed into joseph house in camden last night. the city has issued a code blue emergency from this evening until monday morning. two warming centers are available to get out of the cold in camden. in addition to joseph's house on atlantic avenue the new life community development corporation on haddon avenue is open. if you haven't done it yet this season you crews snuffed out a fire at this two story row home. fortunately everybody inside made it out safely. in montgomery county the norristown community will say good-bye to this young hero who lost his life trying to save a family member from a fire. a celebration of life service will be held to honor 12-year-old sanford harling. he died last week after running back inside his burning house to save his father whom he thought was trapped. it turns out his dad escaped by jumping from a second floor window. investigators are now looking for the cause of this fire. the public service for sanford harling is scheduled for 11:00 this morning at the christian network united church of christ in norristown. we have some new information this morning related to that mystery illness at college. 200 students have reported symptoms of a stomach infection. the montgomery county health department inspected the school's cafeteria and did find some violations. according to the inspection employees didn't properly wash their hands, some equipment wasn't clean and dead insects and rodents were found under sinks and storage areas. all activities on campus have been cancelled this weekend. classes are expected to resume on monday. we'll keep you posted on the story. in other news today a chance to save a life. the american red cross is holding some blood drives this weekend. there's an urgent very closely at the forecast this morning. yes, very cold outside. how about the pocono mountains? skiers are not giving it any rest. they are out there, bundled up i'm sure getting ready for a snow squall to push through the pocono mountains. 7 degrees in the poconos. 18 in allentown. 2 2i7b philadelphia. 24 degrees in atlantic city. this is the feel like temperature. this is what folks outside are feeling like zero in read judging. 6 degrees in philadelphia. 2 in wilmington, delaware. so, if you are heading out if you have to go outside today you want to bundle up for sure. throw an additional layer on and make all the skin is covered because frostbite is a real concern. look at these wind gusts. we are really -- when we talk about the wind chill we're focused on wind gusts. these are wind gusts already clocked. 37 miles per hour in atlantic city. 30 in millville 33 miles per hour in philadelphia. winds out of the northwest, sustained winds between 20 and 30, really the former district attorney in montgomery county in 2005 cosby wouldn't be charged for any allegations made by a temple university employee. a montgomery judge rejected that claim. >> pope francis here we do have a wind chill warning in effect until sunday 1:00 p.m. and then further south and east towards philadelphia just about everybody in our viewing area, wind chill advisory until 9:00 tomorrow morning because we got arctic air in place then we factor in the winds and this is what it feels like outside right now. so 13 below for any of the skiers out there. hopefully they are bundled. primarily not taking too much time outside in the harsh cold extreme elements. that's really the key. feels like zero in reading. look at these. feels like 2 in wilmington, delaware. dangerously cold waking up tomorrow morning. this is worthy of pointing out because you may have plans tomorrow morning so i figured i would give everybody sort of a head start there. it will be 9 degrees down along the shore line but feel like 16 below. feel like 15 below interior south jersey towards vineland, feel like 17 below just south of trenton. 5 degrees in wilmington, waking up tomorrow morning. but it will feel like minus 15. and then further north we go the colder it will be and then out at that, minus 34 degrees. that's what will feel like tomorrow morning. in from the northwest a lot of time to really settle in. radar showing we do have some streamers, this lake-effect snow and so don't be surprised in and about the area today if you do see a flurry or two, isolated pocket of a snow shower. tracking snow on monday, i'm taking you ahead. we got the high pressure. acting as a block. got a system coming from the coast on monday. cold enough. yes. we should be cold enough to start out as snow on monday and warm front moves in and we could have a wintry mix then turning over to all rain by tuesday. that system still looking like a snow event then turning to rain. but we can't rule out the possibility of a wintry mix in there as well. so cold, bitterly cold today, and tomorrow. that's why we're giving you a weekend forecast here and then we're tracking the our temperature will be on the rise. look at tuesday close to 50 degrees. we finish out with flurries wednesday morning and temperatures moderate towards the end of the week. be folks from all over the country have converged on philadelphia for this colorful convention that's been dubbed the biggest on the east coast. details coming up. this is going to be a colorful weekend at the pennsylvania convention center. that's because the philadelphia tattoo arts convention is under way. keith jones gives us a preview of what you'll find inside. >> reporter: okay. so i wasn't brave enough to get a tattoo but there are plenty of people here that did get tattoos. this is the largest tattoo convention on the east coast to an outsider it's intimidating, to an insider it's a alert because of the bitter cold conditions. but the weather is no match for the boy scouts. nbc 10 drew smith is live in montgomery county with the story. >> reporter: imagine if it was cold in your house where you were sleeping in your warm bed. think about being out here at this campground where only a thin piece of material separated from you this cold wind. we'll explain how these boy scouts are putting up all this next. >> i'm not sure how the boy scouts will do because cold air in place, colder air coming into place later on today. you see the flag is blowing. strong northwest winds. we got wind gusts the region up to 50 miles per hour. we're talking arctic cold. we do have a wind chill advisory and a wind advisory in effect. i'll be back with more details after the break. mornings. weather that can be dangerous if you're exposed to the elements for too long. good morning welcome back to nbc 10 news i'm rosemary connors. it's 9:030 on this saturday. it's a first alert weekend. we're doing everything we can to keep you informed. karen thomas is tracking those temperatures that are continuing to drop. karen? >> yes. rose tick front to thank for this frigid air. it's continuing to funnel into our area of the northwest. that's extreme arctic air that really started up way north of canada and was just allowed to continually sag into our region. now you sunshine with a beautiful live shot right now on boat house row. don't be fooled. the won't do much to warm us up. temperatures will be falling off as we move on through our saturday. another live look at camelback, pocono mountain where snow squall moving through. coating of snow could fall there. great lakes snow effect happening. it's a first alert weather day because of the extreme cold. near record cold overnight tonight into early tomorrow with dangerous wind chills and our wind gusts up to about 50 miles per hour every where across the region. temperatures currently, 7 degrees in the poconos for those skiers and snowboarders, 22 in the city, 24 in atlantic city, 23 degrees in dover. but let me show you these numbers. this is what feels like right now. so if you can stay indoors that's a great idea today and tomorrow. hundreds of boy scouts are in montgomery county this morning doing their best to stay warm and safe in these bitter conditions. the valley forge pilgrimage and encampment is a time honored tradition and today earning that badge means taking on a real challenge with this weather. drew smith is live camp site in lower providence to tell us more. drew? >> reporter: good morning. this gives you indication how bad it is out here. there are some scouts from canada here today. they said this is bad even for them. take a look at this tent. this specially set up because of the wind. they are trying to block that wind from making colder than there are. there are bunches of supplies. first aid people out here keeping a out on the scouts because they are out of their inlated sleeping bags. even more dangerous. scouts woke up to a harsh and heavy wind blowing their tent ace round. this morning a huddle around the propane stoves. the boys were shivering as they made breakfast. the wind picked up. they had to double check the tents are secure. we talked to some of the scouts about their night. >> the first valley forge i think was colder. i'm just more pre. so i know what i'm doing. >> this is definitely a pretty cold trip. >> reporter: so the scouts right now are at the valley forge national park. back here at the campground you can see the wind howling out here. we talked to some of the younger boys. they said they are going to go home tonight. people are here from all over the country. they say it's too harsh out here. some of the more experienced scouts say they brave it out here for the second night, the brave guys. >> absolutely you too, drew. thanks so much for being out there for us this morning. now is the time to download the sentenced leonor to life in prison. leonor, her son and his sister were convicted of cyber stalk in the shooting death of david's ex-wife and her friend at the new castle courthouse in 2013. leonor's husband thomas pulled the trigger before killing himself. if you have a pet, we have a warning four. at least half a dozen owners say people have tried to steal their dogs by impersonating office frers the pennsylvania spca. two weeks ago we first told the story of a philadelphia woman who said it happened to her. the real pennsylvania spca did help her get her dog back. but as nbc 10 errors she's not the only victim. >> reporter: this thing starts on social media somebody posts a picture of a dog claiming it's been abused and others decide to take justice into their own hands. max the pit pull has a confusing week. he starred in this viral facebook photo that shows him sleeping in the cold with no food. cue the instant internet outrage. some people even went to his owner's house pretending to be animal welfare agents and tried to take him away. >> somebody taking matters into their own hands. >> reporter: the pennsylvania spca says max is very healthy. their investigation found zero violations. >> the dog is in good health. you know seems to be very happy. >> reporter: max's story is just one example of dog lovers resorting to vigilante justice. in the past few weeks there's been six cases of people posing as spca officers with fake badges and threatening arrests. in one case the imposters got away with two dogs. >> they feel like they are doing the right thing, saving an animal. >> reporter: they are breaking the law. so this is what a humane law enforcement officer will look like with a state i.d. card, a real badge and a warrant. >> we have to do our investigation based on factual information. and not just one photo that may go viral. >> reporter: nbc 10 news. philadelphia could soon ban pet stores from selling commercially bred dogs and cats. according to philly.com a city councilman introduced the measure that aims to fight so-called puppy mills. he is hoping it will spur more adoptions of rescue animals. the humane society says they don't know of any pet stores in the city selling malls from breeders, but the law would prevent it from potentially happening in the future. still ahead a car on an icy collision course hits a woman standing onto side road but what happens after the crash is truly hard to believe. plus taking the plunge. adventure is calling in cape may county this weekend. you'll get points for bravery and charity if you dare to do this. sea isle city is holding its annual polar bear plunge. the plunge is set for 2:00 this afternoon. more than 2,000 people, brave souls are expected to venture into the frigid surf with wind chills around zero. because of the dangerous cold extra ambulance crews and police will be on hand. karen, any advice for these people who think they will take the plunge? >> yes. they shouldn't how about that? don't do it. rosemary, do not do it. i'm glad they have emergency services standing by but, you know, you will be soaking wet and come out into this frigid, frigid air with the wind and the wind gusts, i don't know. hopefully everybody stays healthy through that whole thing. i love the polar plunge. it's exciting. however this is extreme, extreme weather conditions today. looks he is reas looks beautiful. 22 in philadelphia. 21 in cape may. this is what it feels like right now and we're only getting colder. feels like zero in reading. feels like 6 in philadelphia. how about 2 degrees in wilmington? and in atlantic city. we have wind gusts to thank for helping to usher in this arctic air and this really, the wind chill is what it detective factors within the temperature feels so cold out there. right now these are wind gusts clocked already, 37 miles per hour down there at the line, 33 in philadelphia. we can expect some patchy snow showers to continue moving through the area. that's lake-effect snow. sort of isolated and where snow showers pop up, they will, they will not last long but they are just moving through. very dry conditions out there otherwise. bitter wind gusts will continue. 18 for our high. temperatures falling off later today. i'll be back with more in just a bit. >> 9:42. still ahead tough love caught on camera. a dad tries to get his son into safety on the slopes and his message goes viral. >> heads up. it's okay. 9:45 on this saturday. happening now, the search continues for two people still missing in the rubble of a taiwan apartment building. the building fell during a powerful earthquake about a week ago. 115 bodies have been pulled from the debris so far. the building's developer and two architects are now being held on he negligent charges. >> two girls in arizona died in a murder-suicide. the bodies were found yesterday near their high school cafeteria in glendale. a suicide note was discovered at the scene. detectives said they were close friends and appeared to be in a relationship. take a look at this new video, it shows a car hitting a woman, right there on the side of the road in connecticut. the woman had just been in an accidents during monday's snowstorm. she was guesting out of her car to talk to the other driver. that's when a car on the highway lost control, barrelled right into her. get this the woman had only minor injuries. the driver, those didn't get away free. the driver was issued a ticket for maintaining their lane. >> you okay? ethan. [ screaming ] >> heads up. it's okay. it's okay. >> that was pretty scary. father in idaho is passing along an important lesson in skiing safety. he post this video of his son falling into a tree well where soft snow gathers around the base of a tree and trap a skier in seconds. the father was skiing behind his son, saw the accidents and saved him. the facebook post has been viewed more than 700,000 times. well, we are tracking some very frigid weather and that really is the headline for today. near record cold as we move into our saturday evening, overnight and into tomorrow. and we cannot underestimate the wind chill factor very dangerous wind chills out there as well as our strong wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. we'll have sustained winds and then wind gusts coming along. the temperatures already cold. we got arctic air that's funneling in from the northwest. but then we factor in these strong winds as we move through the afternoon and evening hours and it's really going to feel quite extreme outside. got a snow squall right now in the poconos. looking at camelback mountain. plenty of skiers and snowboarders up there but the bundle up factor can't be under estimated. there's a wind chill warning. this is north of less valley in the jim area. every where else we got a wind chill advisory overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. that wind chill will be sna significant. currently this is what it feels like outside. if you haven't headed out this is what it feels like. feels like 2 degrees in pottstown. 13 below zero in the poconos. that's why i say skiers and snowboarders are having the time of their life but can only spend short periods of time outside simply because of the arctic air. this is like we are really not used to having for sure. our hourly forecast shows us just what our temperatures are expected to do and that's tumble and now here in the purple is what it will feel like. by 5:00 a.m. waking up early tomorrow morning we'll be subzero, single digits. it's record loss. we're getting close to record lows. i want to show you radar because most of us are dry but we do have some isolated snow showers moving through. is the great lakes, we call it the snow streamers continuing to push through the area. especially later on this afternoon in and around philadelphia. you may see an isolated snow,ed snow shower if you're out driving. take it easy. could have some slippery spots but not a big deal. big snow coming on monday or bigger, i should say. we do have a storm that's developing. we got this big ware of blocking high that's actually going to move off to the northeast coast. as it does we expect coastal low to move on up. we'll be cold enough monday to start as snow, but interestingly after all of this extremely cold weather, we're going turn much warmer come tuesday so all that snow should be turning over to rain come tuesday. so for today 18 degrees in philadelphia, scattered snow showers possible. here's a look at your seven day forecast. we'll keep the first alert weather picture in play for the rest of the weekend. just stay warm if you can stay inside that's the best bet. we'll watch the system monday. it's looking like snow then a little bit of wintry mix monday night and then waking up to rain on tuesday. look at the temperature reading. it's about a 30 degree temperature jump as we get close to 50 degrees on tuesday. flurries wrap up that system wednesday morning and then towards the end of the week we dry out, we calm down and our temperatures actually moderate back to normal. hey, allen iverson is a finalist for the basketball hall of fame. the class will be announced at the beginning of april. this was announced at the nba all-star weekend. a.i. is known by a lot of players and coaches as pound for pound as the best player in nba history. the induction ceremony is in september. we'll get our answer then. seems a.i. will be in there. listen to this. >> congratulations on the nomination. and we may be seeing you later this summer. you never know. >> maybe. where?
