10 news today. Im katy zachry. Its 6 00 a. M. Hurricane harvey battering the texas coast. Now lets join nbc news live coverage. Good morning. This is an nbc news special report, im sheinelle jones. And im craig melvin. Were tracking Hurricane Harvey. The storm is pummeling the texas gulf coast. The storm made landfall around 10 00 p. M. Central time last night. It was a category 4 storm then. And its been downgraded this morning to a category 1, but its still an extremely dangerous and devastating situation. Lets head to victoria, texas where Kerry Sanders is standing by this morning. What can you tell us . Reporter well, right now the winds are still gusting upwards of 110 Miles Per Hour. Here in victoria, texas, most of the city has lost power which is of course what you would expect. The but g. News is that two shelters here are up and running and no problems, people who made to the shelters are safe. Unfortunately overnight in this hurricane, which also packs tornadoes and lights thinning, was a lights thing strike that hit an apartment complex. Fortunately it was evacuated, but by the time that the folks from the Fire Department were able to make to the apartment complex, the blaze had gotten out of control and so it burned the apartment complex to the ground. There was also a fire at a home, undetermined how that fire got started, but bottom line that fire also caused extensive damage. This morning were not getting reports of any people who have been injured, but understand its still very early, communication is very difficult and as you can see from where im standing here right now, if i can try to show a little bit with a light here, the wind is still blowing, the rain is coming down. And the real story here in victoria this morning now is going to be the rain. They are estimating the possibility because of the movement of this hurricane, harvey, stalling in this area that were likely to see upwards of 37, maybe even 40 inches of rain. And if that happens, there will be extensive flooding. The rivers in this area are expected to all be above historic stages. One that they are looking very closely at is the guadeloupe river here. And they say that that river likely will get 32 feet above its normal flood stage. So if this stalls as it looks like it has done, well hear more shortly, but as this hurricane dumps a record amount of rain, the real story ultimately will be how bad the flooding gets. Be safe, well check in again with you in a bit. And Gabe Guttierez has been in the middle of the storm all night. He is now near where the eye of the storm made landfall. Gabe, what have you been he seeing . Reporter good morning. As you can see behind me,s rain is still pounding this area. There are heavy winds, as well. There are trees down pretty much all around this part of texas. And if you look over here, you can see another tree down here, as well. Weve been trying to limit how much weve driving in this weather, however we have seen lots of downed power lines that weve had totoavoid, lots of these trees. Homes have been destroyed here. Not far from here is where the eye made landfall. The city of rockport, texas. The city manager says that the damage is still being assessed, but all signs indicate utter devastation. There had to be several buildings that were housing seniors that had to be evacuated. They are not sure exactly how much injuries there have been so far, but a local jail has been used to treat patients as well. But right now as kerry mentioned, communications are very difficult, so local authorities are still trying to get a handle on how much damage there is. A major concern as kerry was mentioning as well is the storm surge. Well be seeing rain here for quite a bit longer even though were on the back side of the storm at this point, you can see just how heavy the winds are. So again, the eye made landfall overnight as rockport, texas. And all signs point to scenes of utter devastation in parts of tooer texas gulf coast. Back to you. All right, gabe, well come back to you in a bit. And dave price, keeping is close eye on the path. And let me also talk about the fact that this is a storm that will continue to develop in phases. First, the here and now. Exactly what is happening. In the last few minutes now, downgraded to a category 1 storm. Lets not focus on the strength of the storm, because its the rain that will be the biggest part of this story over the next several days. Its located 30 miles southwest of victoria, texas. Winds now sustained at 90 Miles Per Hour and this is another big piece of the story. Moving northwest at just 6 miles an hour. Take a look at this picture before we go back to some of the information. The rain field here stretches about 250 miles. So its still a strong storm. The eye right there, just about 11 miles in diameter. The Hurricane Force winds extend 30 miles outside of that. But Tropical Storm force winds over 100 miles away. Now lets track the storm. This is as expected right now. And those are key words because this could change over the next several hours. But you can see the storm meandering just a little bit. And this is over the next few days into the middle of next week. Again, the issue here is that this storm is going nowhere fast. So short term our concerns of course are for flooding. Flash flooding. We have significant impacts expected and again, the flood threat takes us all the way into mid week next week. You can see areas right around bay city and corpus christi, the rainfall amounts upwards of 30 even 40 inches isolated in some areas. And again, this is a story number one of rain, number two of wind, storm surge, but it all the ends up with significant flooding over much of the week. All right, thank you, dave. And moving only at 6 Miles Per Hour. So just barely chugging along. And look at the updated forecast map as to where this will move.
