Supreme court extended a ruling from years ago that said sentencing juveniles to life without parole was unconstitutional. Januarys ruling said that decision must ab plied retroactively which means those people in prison must be given a chance to be resentenced. The ruling applies to some 1,000 inmates across the country, including about 300 in philadelphia alone. I sat down yesterday with District Attorney seth williams. He told me the resentencing process is not an instant one. There are a lot of different parties, all working very hard together to ensure that we get this right. Philadelphia has more individuals that need to be resentenced as a result than othany other city in america. 50 of them were convicted in the 80s and earlier. Williams told me it could take up to three years to review all the cases and give all 300 prisoners a resentencing hearing. Because of a 75 million shortfall, lawmakers are cutting 500,000 that was supposed to fund a state Police Body Cam program. The finance Committee Chairperson says the cuts were made because state police couldnt give them enough detail about how much the program would actually cost. They came in and said this is exactly what it was going to cost, then we could make a decision on the merits, whether this was a good idea or not. So far, state police have not commented on the cuts.
