have to. >> absolutely. you can see the system here live. it is just sitting over our area. the stormy weather will be sticking around for many more hours to come. >> the winds are one of the biggest factors.s a live look. it is whipping around there. this is from our eagles nest camera. >> crews are doing their very best to tackle every inch of roads that you can see. the snow is still falling and the wind is whipping up anyth on the ground. good morning. i'm rosemary connors. >> the first storm of 2018 continues right now. as we have been showing you the amount of snow it really depepdsnds on where you live. >> we have been keeping you informed throughout our area this morning. you can see the list on the bottom of your screen. it is also on the nbc 10 app. >> we are live right now in atlantic city kicking off our coverage. >> you have been outside all morning long. describe how the weather has changed over the past few hours. rfrmgts >> reporter: that's the thing. the weather has been per sis at the present time. -- persistent. we are dealing with wind conditions. the small plow trucks simply cannot get a leg up on mother nature. police made it very clear. theyhome. do not venture out in this. you putting yourself at risk and in harm's way. >> stay home. stay home. don't come out. there is no reason to come out. the roads are terrible. they are getting worse as the minutes go by. >> police aren't mis missing their words. the snow continues to come down. cars spinning their wheels with nowhere to go any time soon. atlantic crews are working fast and furious but they can want seem to catch up with mother nature. how hard is it to maneuver out here on the roads here? >> you have to be like -- driving like you're walking. i mean you cannot even see what's going on in front of you. >> reporter: police say this winter mess is om going to get worse before it gets better. >> we are flooding. he took a break. he keeps trying. i'm not sure where he thinks he may be ableget. >> thanks for that. if you do not have to be out today stay home. it is just a mess. you can see that there, erin. >> yeah. it was also pretty slow going there. you can see in center city the roads ared. this was the scene just a short time ago. look another that. at least an inch or so on the roadway. dealing with. they were getting hit with that pamela osborne isa live. >> so te what you have been seeing for us out on the roads. hopefully people are heeding the warning to stay inside. so >> reporter: some people needing help. plows went through here about 10 to 15 minutes ago. you can see visibility is a little bit poor. the wind is whipping around there. snow going from side to side. roads are pretty messy. take a look. i know a lot of times we talk at some of the side streets. when we were here we watched as the guy tried to get up the hill here. two people got out of the car to help push him to a place he was able to use the vehicle. he simply drove the other way. he wuptas not the only one we talked to. he had planned to drive to the store but when his car could pt make it down the hill he decided he had to walk. take a listen. >> it did you wantoes not look like they have been out at all. they don't have the best tires but they respectare not that bad that i should ptnot be able to make it up this little bit of snow. >> drivers still having a difficult time. you can see a truck coming down the hill here. we have seen everything from suvs to trucks to cars to trying to go up this road here. conditions are that bad outside. i also want to mention before i go, enterprize here they tell me the day after a big snowstorm is when they see an uptake in business. those people usually go right there to rent the car until theirs is back in service. nbc 10 news. >> you make a good point. it did you want matteroes not matter what type of vehicle you're in. >> we both have suvs. i could pt do not do it. i was going maybe 20 miles per hour. >> it was terrible. >> it is not worth that risk. before we get to our next live shot in delaware, glenn dplen "hurricane" schwartz, i have been hearing you talk about blizzard conditions. >> yes. it has specific wind speeds and specific visibility for three hours or more. those conditions have been met at atlantic city international airport. therefore it is a blizzard in new jersey right now. that's what we are seeing, wind gusts over 35 miles per hour and the visibility a quarter mile or less. that is the case. the center of this thing is so obvious i don't even have to point it out to you. it takes one minute by one minute pictures. it almost looks like a hurricane. the radar does not go out into the ocean. that's why you see it out towards the land. i also wanted to give you an idea of the motion. it is going straight to the northeast. it is pretty far off the coast. the sceptereptember center is east of atlantic city. if it was half that philadelphia would be getting the 10 to 18 plus inches. the shore might be getting 2 feet or more. so the speed of the storm plus the distance from the shore is what is limited, believe it or now, you can see on the radar the darker blues indicate the heavier snows. when you get to a storm like this there are bands that form. you can see very clearly that one band that has formed offshore and moved on shore to ocean counties and this is where you'll gateet a snowfall rate of 1 to 2 inches easily. that is coming towards atlantic city right now. so this is twice as heavy as the next lighter colors. we look for these dark blue blobs to see where the intense snow is. it is not in delaware although it is a steady snow there. it is not in the philadelphia area. so we'll continue to monitor where these bands of heavy snow are and they can add to the snow totals. >> so you heard it there, that breaking news first. we have blizzard-like conditions in new jersey. we are heading now to delaware. >> yeah. and our entire weather team will be monitoring. tim furlong is live. tell us what you're seeing. rfrmgts >> reporter: it's hard to see anything. the snow is coming at me horizontally. you can trucks, vans and these tires have a lot of tread in them. we found that we were sliding all over the place. what we are seeing at this point are a lot of closed businesses. there is a level one drooifliving emergency. if you don't have to go out we encourage you to stay home. they tell usyou to use extreme caution. the wawa is one of the few places that is still open at this point. as we have seen people coming in we have seen people slipping and sliding. they keep trying to clear this area off here. it is not only snowing and blowing, it has been so cold that everything that lays down on the ground is icing over. they are doing the best they can. you can see what they are fighting here. look at all of the snow. some of this is just snow that has drifted into these areas here. the wind is that ipntense here. i know there's a technical term for covering snow for year this feels like what you always picture a blizzard to feel like. it is pretty intense. stay home and watch channel 10. that's what i would do. >> that's something we will keep saying over and over and over again so folks know it's not safe. let's get an update. they are giving us anpdate on what's going on. >> let's listen into this news conference. conference. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> right now we have around 375 trucks out in the streets city wide attacking the residential streets and primary and secondary streets. it is a plowing and salting operation. the sanitation trucks we have about 144 of them out there. strictly plowing followed behind with a salt truck. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> we are asking folks if you see a plow truck please keep your distance behind them so your vehicles are not covered by salt. we are also asking folks not to push or shovel snow into the street or plow snow back into the treated streets. >> you have been listening to a live news conference from the philadelphia streets department. we know they have 375 trucks out on the road. this is a plowing and salting operation. a good portion of them are trash trucks that have plows on the front to tackle those streets. you're looking at the primaries, secondary and drenzresidentials after that. >> let's get a look at the video. this one from ocean county. listen to that. you can hear the wind there whipping and you can see the flags flapping around. just indication of how the winds are gusting down the shore. check this one mark clark says what you canno this is the pennsylvania turnpike exit 320. we want to see what you're seeing. use the nbc 10 app to see it and share it with us. we'll get it on the air for you. could want on the count on the nbc 10 app. a winter storm is slamming our area. some places are really getting pounded. >> absolutely. there is a live look if you can see it over baefrpeach avenue in cape may. the good nudes isews is there are no drivers out andthere. the winds are gusting. a live look as our live team coverage continues. this is one of the most rapidly intensifying winter storms we have ever seen. i'll tell you what to expecte day and into the weekend coming up. - >> this is cape may. only menchemergency vehicles are allowed on the road. everybody else stay off. we are in trucks that are able to happenedndle this kind of weather. we'll keep you posted. >> let's take a live look at the makyo out the planes through all of that snow. there have been more 200 cancellations at the airport this morning. crews are working to get planes off the road. the airport tweeting out crews deicing plaepeing planes there. more than 8,400 flights worldwide have been cancelled today and for offici air lines before heading to the airport. >> if you don't have to go any you stay home. >> no. >> if you're getting to the airport the roads are a mess.everything went over here to this off ramp to theside. this was blocking off all of the lanes on the eastbound side. pretty big delays moving towards south philadelphia. that accident just cleared. a jackknifed tractor trailer. it is blocking several lanes there. we are an hour from now. it is typically about a 15 or 16 minute trip. we work 38 minutes on the northbound side. we have another closure. this is southbound closed between quaker town because of the amount of disabled vehicles that are popping up in that spot. if you don't have to head out the door it is probably best that you don't. >> you have got to take your time. >> we heard it from the streets department. wind and cold temperatures is why we have such bad now, you can see thee storm. it is tracking up the northeast, not towards the coast. it is important because you see, this band of snow rightthere, that band of snow if it moved to the west then we would be getting some really heavy snow across our area. because this storm is moving to the northeast it might stall there for several hours. the septembercenter of the storm is 270 miles offshore. it is pretty amazing. you can see the darker blues indicating the heavier snow. let me give you an idea of how much heavier the snow is. the latest color, this is in the liquid we liquid give-- equivalent. this darker blue is eight times the ipntensity. the darkest blue is this. it's all relative. that's how we know how much snow is falling here. so once again, nothing close to the darker colors out delaware or even in cape it i m a steady snow. it's a steady snow in the philadelphia area. it is near as strong we are seeing in ocean county. visibility will give us an idea too. the lower the visibility the heavier the snow. this is a half mile. coatsville pretty significant at three quarters. look in the nmgeweavy snow. this is dover and wilmington. it is more of a moderate snow. the snow totals so far close to a landing getting close to a foot. in delaware parts of the area 7 to 8 inches and we will continue these didn't the snow would be coming that far to the west. the storm 10 to 18 inches right al parts of atlantic the time itover. will talk about another issue with the winds.ave been watching the winds all morning long. they have been cranking up out there. the wind issue will be continuing. we are looking at strong winds tonight and tomorrow. atlantic city 44 miles per hour gusts. we have been seeing it now in atlantic city. up near 40 miles per hour wind gusts and wl mipgmington at 36. as we because roads are a mess it is best not to do to. around 45 to 50 hirpmiles per hour gusts are en this evening they will be strong. i think this is going a little high. between 30 to 40 is possible. tomorrow morning this issue remains. look at that 6:00 a.m. getting ready for work. roads are likely to be icy. gusts around 35 plus for your friday. this is all day friday. so when you have got those kind of gusts and the kind of snow very cold air will drop in from the north. look what happens. it is your feels like temperatures. only at 8 in pots town. this is the cold air that comes in behind the snow tomorrow. we'll continue for bitter dapg dangerous cold. it is 11 below zero. it is 15 below in allentown. nowhere on the map feeling above that zero mark. check the out. this is your friday amp.fternoon. feeling below zero for the entire region. we'll talk more about that coming up. temperatures rely you seethat. >> me about it. >> to track this winter storm slamming the area. >> we'll get to the live photos in just a moment. these ar you're showing us conditions in your neck of the woods. we are already seeing nearly a foot of snow. could want on nbc 10. weave got you we have got you covered. >> we have cameras like this one to show what it is like in your neighborhood. >> fierce wipdssnds are battering the shore. they are seeing blizzard-like conditions. >> let's give you a live look right now at long beach ie lapdsland. look at that snow coming down. this is a lot snow big fat flakes we are seeing right here. this is a live picture coming into us. >> let's head to delaware. wind gusts topped nearly 60 miles per hour. this is what it looks like. we should mepgsntion that it is obviously closed. let's head to south philadelphia. you can see it is a slow ride. >> not one car. >> there is one. >> we see one or two cars. >> we like to see it. it means people are staying e ha cancellations cancellations, delays today. stay in. this is actually a view from the wells fargo center. >> our live extepidnded cover ramgage continues. >> it really depepdnds on where you live. >> jersey shore is live staying put. ted, you had a little bit of trouble out there on the roads. tell us about it. >> more than a little. we are still having roads here are very -- [ no audio ] >> ted, his shot just faded out there. >> reporter: can you hear me? >> yes. >> reporter: the conditions are not great for i driving or for live television. we are driving to relieve sidney long and we were driving up and we hit some very deep snow. a lot of streets not plowed yet. we got stuck in this drift. look how deep it is. it is all the way up to the bottom of the door. that's the problem here. the snow is light and it is piling up. take a look at this drift. this is up to my knees. john you pan across the street the snow is up to the door of that yellow house. so to say that it's tough to get around this morning is an urpd understatement. you don't want to end up stuck like we did. take a look at how deep this snow is. stay ipnside if you absolutely can. this street was plowed after we got stuck. you can see it is already starting again. as soon as the plows come by it starts blowing and piling up again. we are trying to figure out how we are going to get our van out of here. john tried to shovel it out. it is notworking. the van is up on a moupdnd of snow. >> and you're in a trough that is more suited for like this. have you seen any cars that are ? >> a few. them going by on some of the streets but not many. it seems people are heeding the advice and staying off the i have seen a couple of cars go by but not too many. >> and a few people outhere on enjoying the snow. you should not be driving in this. >> if you can, yes. >> stay safe. stay warm. we'll get you out of there. >> this this is the ben franklin bridge. we know at times like this they reduce speeds on all of the bridges in the area. reduced speeds to 25 miles per hour. again, stay off the roads. as we have been reporting there have been a number of crashes and emergency crews have to get their work done. >> visibility is impossible ri driving around. >> yeah. storm force 10 equipped to hit all of these kinds of conditions. randy, describe the conditions there. >> reporter: yeah we have been on the main highways lately. it isd.osus let me show you a live look here from the city of cam depdencamden. it seems heavy machinery go down the smaller narrower side streets. the roads are completely covered. we saw at least one guy spinout and go into the woods. new jersey state police say they responded. the number is obviously talk to a couple of guys heading to work. it is a lot easier if you have a big pickup truck. >> all right. randy is reporting live for us in storm force 10. let's go from south jersey to south philadelphia. >> that's where lauren is live. lauren, you have been talking to some people two are trying to make the most of this wintery weather. >> reporter: i'm laughing because as you're coming to me the snow is hitting me in the face here. it is just blowing around here in south philadelphia. we moved from our location. we wanted to show you what it looks like in the neighborhood. out where we were itslushy. look around me. we were from slushy to snowy. it white here. you can barely see a couple of blocks down there. that is sort of slowly makesing it way here. i brought this out here with me today. i thought maybe i could measure the snow as it was falling. we have been talking about that wind. that means it varies from where take a look. you go there an area like this. you're looking at 3.5 inches or so. here you're looking at 2 inches. so depepdnding where that wind is blowing you can certainly feel that wind as it hits you. take a look at this. >> like it is a blizzard hitting your face. it is work. >> do you have any trouble getting your car out? >> no. it should get out hopefully. anything else i don't know. it will be a beautiful day. >> reporter: this is why he was saying it is important to have a truck. it hasn't been plowed here. the cars have come through here and packed down this snow. if you have a low lying car it will be tough especially in the intersections in the tight streets in south philly. it will be really tough to get through. the easier time of it. everyone is taking their time here today because it is a tough spot to get through. back to you. >> a little positivity there. it will be a beautiful day there. >> yes. something like that. all right. in south philadelphia. thapg thapg thanks for that. >> yes. jessica has been very busy keeping an eye on the cameras. what are you seeing? >> yes. i saw a tweet from atlantic coup county. it has vehicles traveling on roads there. just a heads up. this is on the southbound side too. sit a tractor trailer. we know how all of that works. so far apart it is get cars off of the roads that are stuck behind the closure. your best bet take route 30 it is not doing as bad as the blue route. here are the cameras around the vine street expressway. i keep seeing accidents over here that cu it is. it is starting to see some of the most problems. this is 295 moving through cler cherry hill. the road don't even look that flat. it is crews creating thatway. we have speed restrictions on all of pretty much. if you have to go out go really slow. >> all right. thanks for that. we continue to keep you covered. we are watching this winter storm as it dumps snow across the area. >> they will have the highest snow totals. we take a this is one of the fastest intensifying storms that have been recorded. you talk about the term bomb. there's a certain criteria to do that. this has doubled the criteria. it is a double bomb. it is also so far offshore that it's amazing. it is clearly moving to the northeast. if it was moving up the coast we would be getting way more snow. quickly too. you can see the blues and darker blues indicate the heavier snow. it has been moving this far, moving over 30 miles per hour. there's no blocking pat erp totern to stop it. it is another reason snow amounts will be limited. tell it to the folks at the jersey shore and also in southern delaware. we have septembernt storm ranger 10 in. if we were seeing a change over we would be able to detect that and just what streaket that was on. why is this happening? the heavy sno that here. meeting a norwind. the winds come over the front. as long as the front did you want move this did you want move. it means certain areas can get double or triple the amount of snow. so toms river, brick and this is just in from long beach ieslandisland. atlantic city getting moderate snow. let lesser snow in cape may and delaware. we are getting reports of a foot of snow in parts of southern delaware. you can see the steady snow continue in and around the delaware area. we do have of even more., its mostly in new jersey. krystal klei has more on
