September is National Preparedness month, but just how ready are you and your family for the next emergency or disaster . Judge renee cardwellhughes is the ceo of the southeastern chapter of the American Red Cross and shes here with some important tips. Good to have you here. Pleasure to see you. Lets talk about the thing most people face, the most common thing people face and that is house fires. House fires is the most deadly thing. So, there are several things people should do and september is a wonderful time to do it. Do have you a working smoke alarm on every single floor of your home . You should have a tenyear lithium powered smoke alarm on every floor. If you dont, you can call 311, the Fire Department and red cross will come out and install one free of charge. Its critical. The second most important thing is an escape plan. Do you know how to get out of every room of your home . Not just your house, but every room. Every room in your home. Two ways out of every room. The critical thing is, a, to design this plan and, b, to practice it with your children and the seniors in your home. Pick a spot outside your home to get to thats safe for your family as a meeting point. People say, i forgot and go back into the fire. Worst mistake you can make. When you get out, stay out and wait for the Fire Department. We did a story earlier this year, last year, where kids escaped a fire because they had just practiced climbing out of the window and getting out of the house. Thats really important. Lets talk about emergency kids. A lot of people dont even think about an emergency kit, but if you have one, you should have one, and what should be in it . September is a good time to check your emergency kit. You want one on every floor of your home. In it you want a gallon of water, a gallon for each person for three days. Thats three gallons of water for each person. You also want a gallon of water for each pet you have. Just one gallon will last a pet three days. Think about nonperishable food. My favorite is peanut butter. Peanut butter and rice cakes. Sounds good but its good. Its nonperishable food. You want to put games in there for your kids, books, puzzles, crayons, things that dont require electricity. A batterypowered radio so that you can get information about the conditions outside the home. So, this is what we call a stay in place kit. You want to be able to stay in your home for three days until First Responders can come. You also want what we call a go kit. A go kit is something you keep by the bedroom door, where you can grab it. Theres a copy of your Life Insurance in there, your homeowners insurance, things that if they were lost would be difficult to replace. So, you have this go kit and you grab it and you get out of the house. The red cross is also involved in the preparation for the popes visit coming up at the end of the month. Yes. We have family Reunification Centers stationed throughout what i call the popes festival ground. Were there. Were also taking care of all the volunteers who are coming into the city. So, well be housing them and making sure theyll be safe. Well be providing first aid and medical assistance to the hospital teams that will be there.
