Come back morning. Now to another developing story, across pennsylvania, more than 100,000 students, their education is on hold indefinitely. Professors went on strike at 14 different state owned universities. Teachers marched on the picket lines. Randy gyllenhaal has been talking to professors and students today at cookstown university. Randy . Reporter and these talks, im told, hit a brick wall late night. Now the professors are on strike. Im told one of the main sticking points in these discussions was the rising cost of health care. So i want to go into some detail here, the state commission which oversees these colleges wants the faculty to pay higher premiums, about 15 to 30 a month. They also want to have a new deductible. And 1,000 in new out of pocket expenses. The state says all of this is necessary because they facing a budget deficit and other University Employees are already paying that new health care plan, but the faculty members i spoke to said their finances could be impacted, this could lead to the hiring of new professors. And for students on these 14 campuses, this strike leads to a lot of unease over the next several days or possibly weeks. They deserve to be treated fairly, but were also paying tuition, so they need to be out here teaching. I have only got on as and bs so far. I have heard if it goes for two weeks, we get a refund of our money. But i dont want that to happen because i enjoy going to school. Reporter classes have been essentially cancelled, most professors not even allowed back on campus itself while the strike is under way. The state says they did offer raises to the faculty, but the faculty says this issue goes beyond compensation, right now im told that no negotiations are under way, so this strike could continue for who knows how long . Our coverage continues now. About an hour south of cookstown at cheney university, professors there hit the picket lines joined by students and other School Worker this is afternoon. The University Says school is in session despite the strike. Students have been told to go to classes, leaving only if their professor doesnt show after about 15 minutes. What we want is a fair contract that is fair to us, to the students, and actually to the future of the commonwealth. About 1 fact k00 faculty mem cooksville are striking. Theyre hoping this is resolved before theres too much damage. Reporter six hours into the strike by West Chester University faculty, students also walked out, chanting and carrying posters, this show of solidarity, follows a morning of uncertainty. I had biology this morning, i went there, but no one was really there. Reporter was the teacher there . No. Reporter others did have a teacher show up. It was kind of strange, we had it at 9 00 a. M. And some faculty came in and told us our professor isnt coming in, we can leave. Reporter were you surprised by that . Not really surprised. Reporter one opportunity told me she received this email from her biology professor who said i wont be there. I want to graduate on time. Reporter we asked some of the 17,000 students how they plan to spend this down time. I guess ill just try to keep up with work that was maybe on their syllabus, try to like see if i can get ahead, maybe. Reporter study ahead . Study ahead, definitely. Two, four, six, eight, why cant you negotiate . Reporter this walkout by some 900 faculty members is occurring during midterms. And there was a cancellation of registration for winter and spring classes. Tonight were doing a movie night. Wcu is showing free movies at the student center. Dining, health and Recreation Centers were also open. In west chester, monique braxton. This strike affects over 100,000 students at 14 universities, but this only applies to state owned schools in pennsylvania, schools like penn state and temple, do not fall into that category, even though they do receive some tax dollars from the state.
