Media released pictures of the suspects at the airport just moments before the attack. The third suspect there on the right may have gotten away. Todays attacks less than a week after officers arrested a suspect wanted for the paris terrorist attacks. And this afternoon weve learned that european leaders were bracing for weeks for a major terror attack, and today it happened. Indeed belgiums ambassador to the United States said his country was suspecting an attack like this might be coming and had each stepped up security, but obviously none of it was enough to prevent todays tragedy. Reporting live, george spencer, nbc 10 news. And nbc news is reporting eight americans were injured in the the attacks, that includes a member of the u. S. Military and four members of his family, their injuries do not appear life threatening. The other injured americans from utah, they were serving in paris, but were at the airport when the explosions started. They are in the hospital with serious injuries. The u. S. Embassy recommends that americans in belgium stay where they are and avoid public transportation. The embassy urged citizens to take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. Nbc 10 has been reaching out to people in our area who live in brussels. For one family the attacks left them separated. Ted greenberg has the story. Reporter the brussels attacks left mayrilyn stuck in london after the train was canceled. Even before hearing theyre canceled you have concerns whether its wise to be putting yourself in jeopardy by getting onto a public transport. Reporter she and her husband from south philadelphia and center city both work in brussels. He called her soon after this mornings attacks. When some of the metro blasts went off, he was able to see people on the street running, you know, away. Reporter the subway explosion happened in a busy area that marilyn, the mother of a 5yearold, travels through often. She and her family lived in brussels for three years. You have to make sure you stay alert and when something does go wrong, you batten down the hatches and just have a little faith in the universe that you know, god keep us safe. Now in the aftermath of the bombings and more than 200 miles from home, she expects to spend another night away from her family. I have not yet committed to a train for tomorrow but i want to get home to my little girl and my husband. She and her husband libed overseas for more than a decade. She says she cant wait to one day come home to philadelphia where she would feel much safer living. Ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. A flight from brussels to philadelphia was scheduled to leave just one hour after the explosions went off. Many of those passengers were checking in at the time but thankfully no one was injured. This is video of the checkin area after the blast. The American Airlines flight was canceled along with hundreds of others. The airport will remain closed for at least tomorrow. Today president obama called for nations around the world to unite to defeat terrorism. The president was speaking during his visit to cuba. He pledged to do whatever is necessary to help belgian authorities to seek justice for those killed and wounded in the attacks. We must be together rartd regardless of nationality or race or faith, in fighting against the scourge of terrorism. The white house released this photo of the president and susan rice being briefed on the attacks. The call was made from the residence of the u. S. Chief of mission, in havana, cuba. A lot of scary scenes and a warning that some of the images are graphic but we wanted to share them. This is at the airport right after the attacks happened. There are some people covered in blood including this child. This womans face tells it all. This is what it looked like in the subways. We know some of the attacks, two explosions at the airport and then also the explosion at the metro station. And passengers were loaded off and forced to walk along the tracks through that smoky tunnel to get out of the metro. This is oud the metro. There is a man on the ground who was injured. People attending to him and helping him and there is smoke coming out of the metro station. We showed you this before but this is the closest from inside the airport. You could see that some of the Ceiling Tiles had come down, people running out of this cafe thats there. Debris all over the ground. This is the closest weve seen inside that terminal where those explosions went off. This is what it looked like immediately after as smoke billowed out of broken windows. The explosions were so bad that they blew all of the windows out of the front of the terminal. Here is immediately in the aftermath you see people running down, running out, there was a parking garage to the left here where this gentleman is standing where hes filming.
