Take a good look at the video, this tuesday night, they are captured by a home Surveillance System at 3 00 in the morning casually stealing from an unlocked truck in the owners driveway. They are not looking over their shoulder, they are comfortable with what they are doing. They are comfortable, one suspect does put a sweatshirt over the top of his head to conceal his idea. Reporter police say the men walked off with a 1,000 concrete saw, one of nearly 80 burglaries since august 1st. There are groups of suspects. They are not a ring that were aware of. Reporter in all, 51 cars, 19 sheds, and six homes have been burglarized. In one of the cases a residents handgun stolen from the night stand. Its scary, you dont think its going to happen around here. Reporter nick has been pulling his car into the driveway. His friends have already had valuables stolen. Their cars have been broken into, spare change stolen and gps technology. Reporter police made two arrests recently, they are working now to reunite the rightful owners with laptops, phones, and jewelry. There are a total of 76 burglaries. If you know of something being stolen, please call us. It may be a small piece of the puzzle. Were in a good neighborhood and to hear that, its upsetting. Reporter and police tell me they believe drug money is the motive behind these crimes. They do plan to post this video to social media. If anyone recognizes the men in that video, you are asked to call Washington Township police. Live in Washington Township, nbc 10 news. New at 5 00, from bethlehem, a tenth grader is facing drug charges after getting busted at liberty high school. Police say he had several thousand dollars worth of cocaine and heroin. A teacher escorted the 17 year old back to liberty high after spotting him at a nearby donut shop off campus yesterday. Police tell us a search of the boy turned up more than 2,800 of heroin and 43 bags of cocaine. Police in philadelphia want you to take a look at this guy riding a bike in ogontz. Investigators say hes about to rob a 15yearold boy who was walking down the street on tuesday. That happens off camera. He had some help from another man who came walking along a little while later. The two men stole the boys cell phone, sneakers, and about 250 worth of septa tokens. If you have information on this case, call philadelphia police. Preparing for the pope, were now about seven days and 16 hours away from the popes visit to our area, the pontiff arriving in our area saturday morning, and thats when a lot of security plans will be in place. Today the secretary of Homeland Security jeh johnson visited a Communications Center in philadelphia where about 50 different agencies will be represented. Theyll be able to monitor video feeds here and also share information. No specific credible threat directed at the popes visit here to this city. Secretary said authorities work to strike a balance with security and access to papal events. Other work now under way to get ready for the popes arrival. Going to show it to you on the ben franklin parkway. Teams getting ready for next saturdays festival of families. You can see the scaffolding going up. Crews continue to shut down the inner lanes, which will remained closed until tuesday, september 29th. And today drivers are starting to see these warning signs going up. Nbc 10 found these detour signs posted on city avenue indicating some of the closures on the main line. Meanwhile, City Residents got an update today on when cars must be moved out of the area ahead of the popes visit. Some cars must be moved as early as sunday at 6 00 p. M. City Officials Say its happening so soon because they have a limited number of tow trucks and a large number of parking areas to secure. The early start is based on the number of cars theyve had to move from other events like the new years day parade. There are approximately 6,500 Parking Spaces in the area shaded on the map, so you can understand the size and scope of this project. Some residents are eligible for free parking in city owned garages, others can get reduced rates of 20. In montgomery county, a new tool was unveiled today that will not only protect the pope, but also everyone who comes to get a glimpse of him when he ventures outside of the city. Nbc 10s Deanna Durante shows us the drone that will keep a watchful eye over pope francis. Reporter from his hand held screen, he can see what it sees. Theres some type of object covered up, but theres a wire coming out of the back of that vehicle. I saw an individual in the front of the car with explosives on his chest and know he has Something Else in the bed of the truck, as well. Theres more than one threat here that i would have to deal with. Reporter he has spent months training for this post, running the countys new drone. Its a great tool available if needed for the papal visit. Reporter the sheriff says the drone is a key piece of technology to keep his deputies and all Police Called to inspect devices safe. Thats an awesome responsibility to put someones life in a position where they could lose it. We now have the ability to see what that Police Officer or that deputy is going to face. Reporter during the drone demo, deputies showed us how they can examine a suspicious car. They can clearly see wires, the drone will be used in places where robots cant go or a bomb suit can be ineffective. The department was able to pay 10,000 for the tool and not a penny came from taxpayers. We used money that was seized and forfeited from criminals and put it back into this program. Reporter that cash covers the training and repairs the drone may need. Like all tools you dont hope to use them, but having them will be a major aid, especially next week during the papal visit. If theres going to be a million and a half people, whatever it is, in center city, philadelphia, or the avenue, its going to be difficult to get a robot into that area. A well known philadelphia developer is buying Atlantic Citys closed showboat casino. Announcing of the new 22 million deal today to sell to developer bart blatstein. Stockton purchased the showboat from Caesars Entertainment in december for 18 million but conflicting restrictions on how the property can be used doomed the schools plan to turn the building into a socalled island campus. The sale to blatstein does not resolve those issues. Blatstein we wanted to ensure we sold to someone deeply committed to Atlantic City, someone we knew had invested his time and energy and resources into the city. You may recall blatstein recently took over a. C. s struggling pier shops at caesars and rebranded it as the playground. He had no comment on the deal or the plans for the property. Casino authority has approved a multimillion plan to renovate a vacant restaurant into villas at the Golden Nugget casino. Police say one worker stabbed another several times. This video of the scene came into our newsroom within the last few minutes. This happened on brewster street about half a block away from the warehouse in southwest philly. No word on the condition of the worker who was stabbed and we are still working to find out if police have arrested and taken the other worker into custody. The new measures, which take effect monday, will ease sanctions on travel and expand telecommunications and internet services. In addition, American Business sectors limited in part to agriculture and construction, will be able to set up a fiscal presence in cuba. We believe the regulatory changes announced today will allow the United States to continue to advance our interests and improve the lives of ordinary cubans. Heres whats going on around the country. We have warm air over the eastern half, cool air over the western half, and that dividing line, thats the cold front well see swinging through. Right now comfortable, mid 80s into the southeast, mid 70s in jacksonville and then we get where the cool air is. Theres 50s and 60s on the map here. Highs will be in the 70s next week, but shows you the cooler air mass that will be moving in to start us off and to end out next week. In the meantime, big area of High Pressure will keep us dry tonight and as we start the weekend. Moisture off the southeastern coast were going to keep an eye on it, that could try to linger through part of the area next week, but what were watching that will be cooling our weather down this weekend, thats off to our west. Right now at 5 30, an unholy act, vandals struck a church in philadelphia overnight. They destroyed crucifixes and windows, tagged the place and left blood on the doors. Police are now trying to catch whoever targeted the faith lutheran church. Nbc 10s jesse gary went to the church and spoke to the pastor. Its new at 5 30. Reporter the weekend got off to a rough start for the faith lutheran church. Broken glass and damage greets early arrivals. I think this is somebody who is ir religious or antireligious and saw an opportunity to do something. Reporter overnight someone used a cinder block to smash a front window, then move inside the 55yearold sanctuary, defaced a wall with profanity and positioned a replica in a symbol of evil. Hes not convinced its a hate crime. Upsidedown is a symbol for satan. Yes. Reporter this is a hate crime, really . I dont think its an organized hate crime. I think its i dont know, its hard to say. Its somebody has their own personal demons. Reporter the vandal left behind a blood trail on a door before breaking into the pastors office and stealing religious artifacts. Church Officials Say northeast detectives were able to recover four fingerprints. Harder to uncover is a motive. There were acts of vandalism back in the 70s but no recent problems. The pastor estimates all the damage at several thousand dollars, as well as an increase in insurance premium. He is the 200member congregation will overcome this through their faith. Jesse gary, nbc 10 news. A friend of the man accused of killing nine people at a chorlston church allegedly knew about dylann roofs plan to kill Church Members and lied to investigators. Thats according to an indictment unsealed today. Joey meek is charged with concealing information. Meek says roof stayed at his house before the shootings in june. He entered a plea of not guilty during a brief Court Appearance today. Meeks friend, dylann roof, is charged with the death of nine Church Members back in june. Earlier this week, roofs defense attorney said that his client would be willing to plead guilty to murder charges to avoid the death penalty. Two men playing a game of dice on the street early this morning ended up in the hospital. The men, one a teenager, actually, were shot several times by two other men who pulled up to the game in a jeep. Police tell us three parked cars near the 19th and grass street shooting site ended up getting hit, as well. The victims went to einstein hospital. Now to a story only on nbc 10. This Surveillance Video shows a man with a baby in his arms biking away from a scooter heist. The guy who owns the scooter has a Home Security camera who recorded the suspects stealing his ride to work. He says whats especially disturbing about the left theft is that it involves a baby. Thats, like, absolutely ridiculous, man. Like, oh my goodness. Just to hold a baby like that and hop on a bicycle. Anyone who recognizes the man is asked to call police. We have some new information about the families, some with babies, living in tents on the streets of kensington. Today they were moved from the socalled tent city. According to organizers for the homeless, the families were moved to private homes throughout philadelphia. Some are private houses and some are former drug houses that are being cleaned up. Others are empty houses owned by philadelphia housing authority. Advocates tell us that a new tent city location will soon open in a private lot with campers and beds. We will be asking the office of Emergency Services to come down and get everybody in to shelters in philadelphia. The organizer you just heard from says the new tent city will be in the frankford area of philadelphia. Just over a week now until the popes arrival in philadelphia and final security preparations are being made right now. Take a look from sky force 10 this afternoon at the ben franklin parkway. We just got brand new estimates about the crowds expected there to see the pope. The secret service says they expect the parkway to hold only about a quarter of the organizers estimates of a Million People or more. They project between 230,000 to 280,000 people in the first three and a half blocks and the area from 20th street to near city hall. And a live look again from on top of the mellon bank building.
