Check this out, you can see the dreary skies over trenton there. Even though folks were out. And taking a live look at 8th and market in center city, not the prettiest day here either. Cloudy skies. Mostly dry if youre looking to get out of the house this afternoon. We could see a chance for rain overti overnight into the morning hours. Nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is keeping an eye on the temperatures. Were not seeing any real significant prescription, but look how cold it is in allentown, 34 degrees. Thats about as high as its gotten all day. Only 41 in trenton. But its 49 in vineland, 47 degrees in dover. Quite a variation, the temperatures across the area. But everybody is above freezing, and those numbers are going to rise overnight tonight. We have some showers back to our west, in western pennsylvania, generally on the lighter side. Any rain we do get later tonight, tomorrow morning, does look like it would be on the light side. But the big thing is going to be the temperature warmup. Its 45 degrees at philadelphia. Chance of a couple of sprinkles or a little drizzle by 6 00. Look at the temperatures go up overnight. By 6 00 a. M. , 55 degrees with those showers. 52 in the p. A. Suburbs. Even the Lehigh Valley, where it will be in the 30s at 6 00, rise to go 51 by 6 00 a. M. With the rain. You just take a look at the parking lot outside. A few minutes ago i spoke with someone from mall management who has been keep an eye on that parking lot. They tell me it is full. Folks have been packing this mall all day. You can see theyre rushing past me, a lot of them with bags in their hands. Most of the folks here say theyre here to do bargain hunting. The popularity of gift cards certainly plays a role in that. So does the drive for a deal. Inside the Christiana Mall, it still looks like a holiday. And the shopping isnt over here. Just trying to get the good deals after christmas, with all that cash weve gotten from loved ones. Reporter on a day traditionally big from returns, this family from dover had other plans. This was more of a shopping trip than a return trip today . Oh, yeah. We loved everything we got. We wanted more. Reporter its not unusual. A National Retail federation survey of consumers found more than twothirds plan to shop after christmas sales, either at the store or online. At the mall today, there were some items coming in. Today marie buck learned that her husband was going to retire. The victims family and neighborhood say theyre baffled by who could have done this. Reporter erin, theyre just trying to understand it all. The victims husband had just left the store. The gunman must have been watching, because thats when he walked in and shot marie buck. Its been like this all day, people have been pouring out trying to support the family and also the neighborhood. Marie bucks family and long time customers say to know her was to love her, and you knew exactly where you stood. She was a strong italian woman. She had her ways about her. She was good, but shell put you in your place too. Reporter a man in a hoodie gunned her down on Christmas Eve in the store she poured her life into. Her husband and her daughter found her behind the counter of maries groceries on south 6th street shot 12 times. The only witness, an 89yearold woman who heard the shots but didnt see the gunmans face. She was murdered. And i saw my mother, when i went in there, and i just couldnt believe somebody would do that to her. Reporter there was no motiva motive, and nothing taken. Investigators have not found a camera that captured him on video. How can these animals exist . Reporter people left messages, flowers, and candles on the steps of the store, only two houses away from the familys home. My mother does not deserve to be brutally killed like that. Reporter homicide detectives believe marie buck was specifically targeted. Theyre just trying to understand why. Live in south philadelphia, denise nakano, nbc 10 news. Now to the president ial transition. President elect donald trump is vowing to dissolve his Trump Foundation entirely. Mr. Trump said hes making the move to avoid the appearance of any conflict of interest. The nonprofit has come under fire for how it spent money. The new York Attorney general says the foundation cannot legally be dissolved until the investigation is complete. Democratic leaders call the move an attempt to cover up a, quote, pitiful record of charitable giving. Questions are also being raised about possible conflicts of interest involving mr. Trumps children. Eric and donald junior where removed as leaders of a foundation that considered auctioning access to the president elect. Transition Officials Say mr. Trumps sons were named to the foundation without their knowledge. Eric trump has also shut down his own nonprofit for hospital research. Legal experts say these conditions and these decisions are necessary. It doesnt matter whether the money raised is for something some people think is good. The problem is youre not supposed to sell access to the government for any reason. Eric and donald trump jr. Are expected to stay in new york to run their fathers business. Now to the jersey shore, where a search is under way for the driver who hit and killed a man on Christmas Day. 45yearold Keith Elliott was hit at the intersection of hyland parkway and toms river. Nbc 10 jersey shore reporter Ted Greenberg will have the story on nbc 10 news at 5 00. Russian Officials Say divers have recovered fragments of a Defense Ministry passenger jet that crashed into the black sea. All 92 people on board the plane are believed to have died when the plane crashed. It was headed for syria. Russian Officials Say pilot error or a technical fault are likely to blame, adding there are no signs of a possible terror plot. Most on board were members of a military choir set to perform at a new years concert for russian servicemen. Pennsylvania already has the nations highest gas tax. This time next week, its going up again. When you fill up on january 1st, youll pay an additional 8 cents a gallon, making the gas tax 78 cents per gallon. Penndot says the money will be used to fix thousands of old bridges and roads across the state. Across the delaware river, the decision whether to dedicate money to update new jerseys 911 call system could be left up to voters. If a proposed ballot is approved in the legislature and then by voters, all of the money raised from a fee on new jersey phone lines would be dedicated to 911 upgrades. Those upgrades would let callers communicate via text message, photo, and video in case of an emergency. Police are looking for the person who stabbed a man to death this morning in allentown. Authorities say 27yearold lord Alfred Guerrero was stabbed at the intersection of 6th street and sumner court just before 2 30. He later died at the hospital. The coroner has ruled his death a homicide. So far no arrests have been made. Police are looking for the gunman who shot an ups driver friday in delaware county. He was shot in the shoulder just after making a delivery to a rite aid store at 9th and hyland streets in chester. The driver made it safely to a nearby car dealership. He was taken to the hospital and is okay. Beginning new years day, birth records for about 300,000 adopted people will be unsealed in new jersey. Birth patienrents have until saturday to have any identifying information removed from their childs birth certificate. New jersey is joining other states who are allowing access to adults who were adopted. When lawmakers return next one, they will once again consider increasing the minimum wage from the current 8. 25 an hour to 10. 25. But not all at once. The legislation would boost the wage 50 cents per year until 2020. Today is the last day to park and shop for free in newark, newcastle county. The city is offering free parking at meters and lots downtown to encourage residents and visitors to shop and dine local, to support small businesses. Today marks the first day of kwanzaa. Its a special year as it marks the 50th anniversary of the holiday. Today nbc 10 talked to naisha sullivan, who worked with the man who created kwanzaa. It honors african celebrations and transitions. Each of its eight days is devoted to a principle such as unity. She says it brings millions of people together each year. People of african descent are dispersed across the planet. This unites us. Its one of the only holidays that does that. A celebration for the holiday will be held at city hall tomorrow. Some passengers arrived this morning to find a wrench thrown into their travel plans because of these blizzard conditions. They shut down roads across the great plains. Out west, parts of utah picked up, erin, get this, close to two feet of snow. Oh, my gosh, dealing with that in the travel time. I mean, thats kind of rough. Lets go over to glenn hurricane schwartz with a look at what we can expect. Weve got pretty good travel conditions by comparison, i would say. Much of the country still has pretty good conditions. That big blizzard is just over a limited area. They could use some snow in the poconos. But the skiers dont seem to mind very much. A live view at camelback. They do have some fog, to make it drizzle overnight. Not exactly ideal conditions but they could see a whole lot worse like last september. Its 44 and cloudy in philadelphia. Its in the low 40s in many areas. Lehigh valley only 34 degrees on average. Weve got some spots even colder than that. Reading is 36. Allentown, 33. Bath, 33. Normally of course temperatures would go down overnight. But not tonight. You see the wind flow coming out of the southeast. And look at the temperatures to our west. Its 59 at pittsburgh right now. 72 in cincinnati. Thats why were predicting warmer air to come in tomorrow. But its plenty cold in minneapolis. Any warming trend that were getting is just going to last for a day. There we go, tuesday its 60. Wednesday, were right back to 42 degrees. So we have some showers coming in for tomorrow morning. We have 60degree temperatures coming in tomorrow. New years eve looks kind of cold but on the dry side, not bad at all. A few showers in western pennsylvania, a little bit more across the ohio valley. Nothing too heavy. And so we dont expect a lot of rain. There could be some sprinkles around this evening. Watch these temperatures go up, and they go up significantly during the night tonight. When we get up in the morning, 54, philadelphia. Even allentown, which is 33 degrees right now, going up to 53. And during the day, of course, some of these places are getting up to 60 plus. That will depend on how much sunshine. By afternoon, it is dry. We may see sunshine. It could be really, really nice tomorrow afternoon. But colder air is going to be coming in by new years eve. Nothing too brutal. By 6 00, 42 degrees. Midnight, about 34. Those temperatures, right around average for this time of the year. The Lehigh Valley, down to 29 degrees. Im not expecting a whole lot of wind. So again, it could be a whole lot worse. I dont expect any kind of prescription. There is the 60 for tomorrow. There is the colder air for wednesday, thursday, and especially friday. Some showers thursday. But the best chance of rain comes next week, after we get through a fairly nice weekend. And as we go beyond the tenday, it does look like even colder air is going to be returning. Glenn, thank you. She got quite the surprise, a couple left her a 900 tip on a 60 bill and a note. With her fiance undergoing knee surgery and a baby on the way, sarah was especially grateful for the gesture. I couldnt have asked for anything more right now to help with bills, with rent, with, you know, being able to stay home and spend more time with my baby. A Drexel University professor is coming under fire for his controversial christmas wish. The associate professor of politics tweeted that all he wanted for christmas was White Genocide. And this afternoon, he is defending that message. Nbc 10s Monique Braxton got reaction from both the professor and the university. She joins us live from university city. Monique . Reporter good evening to you both. This evening hes calling the message satire. But the university is calling it deeply disturbing and utterly reprehensible. The twitter firestorm began Christmas Eve with this tweet by drexel associate professor george ciccariellomaher. It says, all i want for christmas is White Genocide. We showed this tweet to one drexel student on campus during this holiday break. I believe that free speech is okay in this day and age. But i feel like a lot of people may get offended by that. Reporter we didnt reach the professor at his home or on the phone. But he did send an email. In the statement he says his tweet wasa satirical and the tem White Genocide is an imaginary concept he is mocking. White genocide is the believe that white people will become extinct. I think that he should have been more careful with his words. Reporter a merchant near campus calls the comment inflammatory. Look, any time you use the word genocide, you have to be extremely careful about what youre doing. Thats as serious as it gets. Reporter in his bio, dr. Ciccariellomaher describes his specialties as colonialism, latin america, as well as race and racism. Now directrexel university cond the tweet and tells us, while the university recognizes the right of its faculty to freely express their thought and opinions in public debate, professor ciccariellomahers comments are utterly reprehensible, deeply disturbing, and do not in any way reflect the values of the university. If youre heading out on the slopes tomorrow, you might want to trade in your big winter coat. If you want to get maybe the last of the 60degree weather for quite a while, tomorrow, especially in the afternoon may do it. We have cloudy skies now. And theres nowhere near 60 degrees anywhere in the area. But the 49 in vineland and 47 in dover are not all that cold for this time of the year. Allentown only 34 degrees. Theyre 15 degrees colder than they were at this time yesterday, while some of these other warmer areas are about the same. Mt. Holly is even warmer than it was at this time yesterday. Kind of weird, partly depending on the wind direction and the cloud cover. We do have a few light showers in western pennsylvania. The main area is still well back to the west. Most of that, by the time it gets here, would be on the light side. But the main thing thats going to happen overnight tonight is the temperature going up. So were starting at 45 with a few sprinkles around at 6 00. And then by morning, its up ten degrees, 55 degrees the average high for this time of the year is 42. So by 6 00 a. M. , were going to be more than 10 degrees above the average High Temperature for this time of the year. But its likely to be wet to start off the day. Plus whether its a new concern for parents about their childs diet and exercise habits. Theres a lot of guesswork when it comes to diagnosing a concussion. It appears the secret may be in the ear. Researchers at northern Western University say the key is how the brain processes sound. Using electrode sensors, they monitored different children as they listened to sounds. Kids with a concussions with a 35 smaller brain response to pitch than those who did not. Obese adolescents could be at risk for Heart Disease later in life regardless of race. Researchers followed a group of 11 to 13yearolds until they reached their early 20s. Although black caribbeans and africans were more likely to be overweight, obesity increased the risk of Heart Disease for all races. They have one more gift to unwrap, suggested, a win in the military bowl in annapolis, maryland. This would only be the third bowl win in the history of the temple football program. So this is big. It would be a special accomplishment for the program. He met him in the mall and noticed he was riding a worn skateboa skateboard. After speaking with his mom, the officer said he would buy him a new one for christmas on the condition he would pull up his grades. Ash ashante did just that. Its going to be pretty warm in annapolis tomorrow, unseasonably warm. Now, we have a lot of clouds around, thats for sure. This is at the jersey shore at cape may, you cant see very much there, because of the low clouds and fog. And we have cloudy conditions all across the area. Temperatures range from just barely above the freezing mark to the upper 40s in some parts of the area. And one of those part of ths of area is at the jersey shore. Avalon at 48, ocean city 46, ventnor 47. The same story as some of these inland places, Egg Harbor Township also 47 degrees. A lot of those places are going to be up in the 60s tomorrow. We have that easterly wind now. As soon as the wind turns out of the south, look what its doing in pittsburgh, 59 degrees. And cincinnati, thats the amazing one, 72 degrees. Nashville, 72 degrees. Its almost january. Theres some showers west of pennsylvania, on the light side. The main areas in the ohio valley coming through cincinnati with those 72degree temperatures, and maybe even getting some thunderstorms. Now, tomorrow, the rain that you see there, thats in the morning. Some sun in the afternoon. And look at these High Temperatures. Even reading, bethlehem, easton, we will into the 50s. Theyre in the 30s this afternoon. Phoenixville, up to 58. N newtown, 58 degrees with that afternoon sun sunshine. Fairmount and philadelphia, 56 dregs. Morning showers, drizzle, fog. 61 in haddonfield, new jersey, for the afternoon tomorrow. Jersey shore, 62 in atlantic city. 61 at galloway township. In delaware, we might have some places getting in the mid60s. Wilmington at 64 degrees. Dover at 61. Again, the morning showers, you can see here on the radar, the future radar. Not a whole lot going on here. I do not expect a lot of rain. As you can see, some of those showers during the morning hours, and then they kind of move out. Now, what its going to move out to is that warm air. By the time we get to new years eve, its going to be chilly. But seasonably chilly, more like an average kind of new years eve, except for the fact that it wont rain or snow. 42 degrees for the first fireworks display, 6 00. 34 at midnight. Coldest spot, Lehigh Valley, 34, down to 29 degrees. So we do have a decent weekend coming up. Its just not going to be anywhere near as warm as what we have seen. You can see the temperatures dropping. We get that cold air coming in thursday night and into friday as well as strong gusty winds. That sets us up for the chilly new years eve. But nothing too brutally cold, just kind of a wet pattern next week ahead of colder air. We bounce up and go right back down. And warm tomorrow, just for john. There we go, perfect. Millions are expected to go back to the stores today in what retail experts call the biggest gift return day of the year. Nbc 10 responds reporter Harry Hairston has the rule of holiday returns. Reporter whether it doesnt fit or you just dont like it, sometimes it has to go back. The National Retail federation says half of you return gifts for the holidays. Here are some things to know. Remember, return Unwanted Gifts right away. Your loved ones may have brought the gifts weeks or months ago. Check with retailers to make sure you can make the return. Next, watch out for restocking fees. Theyre most common on bigticket items like tvs or smartphones. Consumer reports says you can sometimes avoid them by keeping receipts and leaving packages unopened. Third, know your returns are being tracked. All new at 5 00, a Lehigh Valley mother is telling us her familys miraculous story of survival. Just moments ago, nbc 10 spoke with karen klein. She and her family got stranded in blizzard conditions near the grand canyon. Now, klein knew if she didnt get help, she and her family wouldnt make it. So she set out on a dangerous journey. And more than 30 hours later, help finally arrived. Nbc 10s Deanna Durante spoke to her from her hospital bed in utah, and she told us love is what got her through this grueling ordeal. I cant leave my son without a mom. I cant leave my husband without a wife. I cant have my parents bury me. Reporter from her hospital bed more than 2,000 miles away, karen klein says she couldnt doubt that she would find help. I feel very, very, very lucky. Reporter ckaren is a colleg professor. She was with her husband and tenyearold son. They were in vegas and attempted to explore the grand canyon with their gps.
