Convention. Well get back to all of todays dnc developments coming up in just a moment. Before we go any further, we do have to turn to a Weather Threat that could impact our entire area. Severe storms moving in, and they will be with us through the evening. Lets talk to First Alert Weather Center and meteorologist sheena par convenient tracking the storms for us. Yeah, jim, a couple of severe thunderstorms through parts of the Lehigh Valley. If you look at the radar, most are going through the Lehigh Valley and parts of burks county and thats where you see the yellow shaded area, and thats a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. Well zoom in right now with one thunderstorm into lower parts of Montgomery County and burks count knee the Lehigh Valley into the poconos, thats a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 4 45. A lot of lightning and heavy rain. Could see winds near 60 Miles Per Hour. Heavy downpours could lead to localized flooding and the possibility for some hail. Now, as far as lightning strikes are concerned, in the past 15 minutes alone weve seen 716 lightning strikes. This storm is going to move straight east so over carbon and monroe counties currently and through the Lehigh Valley and Whitehall Township seeing very heavy rain from it. Aside from that the entire area is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 00 tonight. If youre in the philadelphia area and points north. South of that, reports through south jersey and delaware until 10 00 until so that basically means with any strong to severe storms we see, we could see 60mileanhour winds, damaging winds, lightning, heavy rain and possible hail, so throughout the rest of the evening well be tracking all these storms for you. Coming up, ill show you the timing of the storms and what you can expect and we also have dangerous heat to deal with. Meteorologist krystal klei are a look at that. Were looking at storms all across the map. This is looking in center city, and what we see here is there are people out and about. Not the best time to be out and about. These temperatures seriously hot. Lets look now at those temperatures. These are your feellike temperatures, so were talking humidity and making it feel even hotter than it actually is. This is in philadelphia. 108 is what it feels like outside right now. Were talking almost 110 degrees, and we see it above at 114, the feellike temperature in dover. You can tell where the storms are moving through. Dropping quickly and allentown 96 and the feel damage like temperature 105 in atlantic city. Across the board, it feels like tripledigits or has felt like tripledigits. These are the record temperatures compared to what weve seen so far today. Weve now tied a record for heat in philadelphia as well as in allentown. That temperature has now started to drop. Elsewhere, not tying records yet but close in some spots, as well as mt. Pocono . This heat going to continue. The first alert lingering into tomorrow. Well have more details on the storms and the seat, but for now lets go back to jim reasons field live at the Wells Fargo Center. Krystal, thank you. So far the dnc has been filled with chaos before the gavel even falls here. Listen to the reaction of Bernie Sanders supporters just this afternoon when he told them to vote for Hillary Clinton. And we have got to elect Hillary Clinton and tim kaine. [ crowd booing ] brothers and Sisters Brothers and sisters, this is this is the real world that we live in. Trump is a bully and a demagogue. Trying to turn attention to trump there amidst the booze. The anger amongst sanders supporters has been growing for the past couple of days all starting with the email scandal which forced the chair of the dnc, of course, to step down just hours before the convention. Debbie Wasserman Schultz debbie Wasserman Schultz greeted by booze from delegates in her home state of florida. All right, everybody. Now, settle down. The chair of the Democratic National committee announced she would step down following the publication of hacked emails suggesting her committee favored Hillary Clinton in the president ial primaries. Wasserman schultz was supposed to gavel the convention in. Please be quiet so debby can speak. The controversy is casting a cloud over the first day of the convention. Im going to issue a formal statement of apology. This morning the second in command of the committee apologized and now its up to her to bring the party together. We dont need folks that are going to be a lightning rod for division. For more reaction we go to nbc 10s lauren mayk. What kind of reaction are you seeing from delegates. Reporter they are a few minutes late to gavel in. We now know debbie Wasserman Schultz will not be the one doing that gaveling in today, but i can see as i look around me in this arena delegates are still arriving here today. Want to bring in a delegate from pennsylvania, from northeast philadelphia. This is malcolm. Weve been chatting about everything thats been going on the past 24 hours. We now know debbie Wasserman Schultz not gaveling in here today. Do you think thats the right decision . How do you feel about it . I think its time to now move forward. We have a pro in Donna Brazille and she understands the Democratic Party and is an amazing inspirational leader and were ready to move forward and get through this convention and come out unified, to beat donald trump. And donna brazill, of course, will now be taking over as the interim chair of the dnc. This is your family for this week. This is our family. Reporter do you feel like the family is getting along . I feel like youve been to any type of family reunion, families fight and those fights are hard and they are difficult because were fighting over real issues. The decisions that we make right now is going to decide whether or not some mom can take care of her kid or, you know, take care of her parents that are getting older, so were fighting, but were figuring out the best way forward unlike the republicans who are figuring out how best to divide us and how best to drive us back to the 1950s, 1960s. Im still trying tofying out when this Great American time is that were going back to. Its a time when people are less rights, when less people were a part of the process and a gay black guy like me from north philly wouldnt even be allowed on a floor like that. Reporter thank you. Well check back in with you a little bit later. Thats the mood here that they do want to move forward, but as you saw today theres a lot of Bernie Sanders folks who are not particularly happy with how things went, and they are also very much looking forward to hearing Bernie Sanders speak tonight. Its going to be a very interesting night here at the d. N. C. Jim . All right, lauren mayk on the floor there. Big names scheduled to speak on the first night of dnc. Once rumored vp option Elizabeth Warren and cory booker, and First Lady Michelle Obama and perhaps the most anticipated of the speakers is senator Bernie Sanders. Many wondering what he will say to get his supporters to back clinton. What do we want . Justice meantime about, 100 activists, including many Bernie Sanders supporters marched across the ben franklin bridge starting in camden this morning. Protesters wanted sanders to get the democratic nod for president over Hillary Clinton. They are hoping the march will change the minds of super delegates pledged to vote for clinton. All right. Lets go to nbc 10s tim furlong who is down there with some of those protesters right now. We see them walking there with them. Tim, whats going on . Reporter yeah. Its a hot, angry day here in center city, philadelphia. About 2,000 protesters, i estimate, have just left city hall heading south to fdr park, a and you can see everywhere you look its jill stein, its Bernie Sanders, nobody talking about Hillary Clinton in a week that is supposed to be all about Hillary Clinton and tim kaine. A lot of anger and a lot of people feel that Bernie Sanders had this election stolen from them, and they are not going to let anybody stop hearing about it. If this week is supposed to be about Democratic Party unity, the plan isnt working. We want bernie we want bernie reporter sanders army not backing down, clogging city streets all day today. They dont think Hillary Clinton belongs at the top of the democratic ticket. I think shes a dangerous candidate, and the last thing she is progressive. People try to tell me you should be scared of trump because of what he might do. We know for a fact that hillary has already done everything trump supposedly could go dow. Were a little [ bleep ] off and i want to let you know why. Reporter bernie delegates were pulled and 80 think tim kaine is unacceptable as a running chase saying clinton slapped them in the face by choosing a centrist and they are seething over the wikileaks emails. This is violent and evil and were wont tolerate it. Reporter so it looks at this point like you have a very fractured Democratic Parliament i want to talk a little bit about traffic. If you need to get through any of this in i . City, its going to be a tough afternoon for you. As you turn around, its literally thousand of people blocking broad street. Remember the blue cross broad street run, remember what that was like. Nobody getting around except behind the larger pack. A very spread out crowd and sparse in some areas and then a big crowd up behind it so its a little trick to get around. If you can avoid broad street south of city hall down to fdr park, i advise you to do that. Theres a lot of people out here and, again, people that are not happy and most of those people are supporting Bernie Sanders and they dont want to hear that hes giving up and endorsing Hillary Clinton. Live in sex in the city. Tim furlong, nbc 10 news. We see lester holt joining us and well talk to you in a second and first well check on traffic delays in sex in the city. Jessica boynton, how is it looking out there . Reporter exactly as you would think it would look like. Were dealing with a lot of different areas of volume, and im going to start to tell you y. Of course, we obviously know the dnc is here in philadelphia. Its impacting a lot of areas around sex and the city and down in south philadelphia and near the Wells Fargo Center. The closures and restrictions begin on friday and they will last until midday on friday the 29th. Xhert commercial vehicles weighing five tons or more will be restricted from a ninemile portion of 95 between exit 13 and 22 and though theres no full highway closures there will be ramp, the ramp to broad street and the schuylkill eastbound and theres also security checkpoints for the fivetop vehicle restrictions. Heres one of them, 95 right around the Philadelphia International airport so a slow go past that scene as you can see. Right now not too bad headed northbound to the vine street expressway and anywhere into center city is where were seeing that. Theres dnc planned closures, of course, until friday on broad street. Terminal avenue and darian street are some. Areas that are planned and when i say planned, also we have to plan for the demonstrations. 150 people marching down broad street for one demonstration and a bigger group of 1,000 people heading southbound down broad street into fdr park. Jim . Jessica, thanks. Now well talk to lesterhold holt. For traffic if you tried to make your way here, you could give a traffic report. Its a little tough out here. Nightly news coming up at 6 30, okay. Controversy at the convention seems to follow us from cleveland here to filly. This was it was assumed that this was going to be a sharp contrast to the disharmony going to the republican convention, but, no, thats not the case. A lot of issues, debbie Wasserman Schultz essentially heading out of town, not going to be chairing this convention here. Shes resigned. All eyes, a lot of anticipation on Bernie Sanders, what he is going to say tonight, although hes made it perfectly clear that he is going to call on his supporters to unite behind Hillary Clinton but a lot of them are resisting. Whats going to be their reaction on the floor here and how will the optics play to the rest of the country . Because he got boos when he met with supporters earlier in the day and a lot of booze and a lot of sighs, you know, listen, support Hillary Clinton, so thats one gathering, but when it plays out on this floor with the National Audience look, its certainly not the message that the Democratic Party wants to proje project. And the Clinton Campaign has to be very concerned about how this is all playing out right now. Very concerned and at the same time im sure theres a feeling, hey, look, its monday. Its the beginning. Whatever happens here will be long gone. You look at the republican convention. You had the ted cruz moment. That played out later in the convention, so it had kind of a linger effect, but, you know, its all about optics here. Talk about the emails and hacking and russians involvement. Like a clancy novel. You are working into that has well. Richard engel is work up a story and the experts agree this has the fingerprints of statesponsored russian operation, of leaking these emails with an eye towards affecting the u. S. Election. Its pretty remarkable, right out of a novel. Cant forget about the history thats going to be made here, the first woman nominee for president. When she comes out and says i accept the nomination, i think that the weight of history will certainly fall not only in this building but around the country. Lester holt, thanks for being here. Need an hour. Pleasure to see new person. Always talking to that little box every afternoon. Thanks, lester. More on nightly news tonight. See you soon. This convention isnt all about politics, theres family fun to be had by families heading into the city. Cidney long is here with more about for a cool way to get involved. Well, jim, its called political fest and as if tiny meeses of washington, d. C. And poignant moments in political history have essentially come to life inside the convention center. Weve seen tons of political passion and just a lot of energy outside today, but the interactive exhibits inside, they may be the coolest way to beat this heat. This is betsys hat. Reporter she is betsy ross for the day. Rosemary reed of detroit, michigan is among hundreds enjoying political fest. I was looking over there at the dresses designed by Elizabeth Hackley who was an africanamerican dress designer by Mary Todd Lincoln and thats what made me look over here for the outfits. Reporter how does it feel to be betsy ross . I love it. Reporter the hands on interactive sixday tour brings the oval office to philadelphia and climb on board of an exact replica of president john f. Kennedys air force one, right down to the first ladys quarters and his bomber jacket. Its the donkeys versus the elephants for father and son eric and zuri of philadelphia. Heading over to check out the air force one fuselage and looking forward to that as well as the oval office and getting a little flavor of what life is like as a president. Since were not delegates we cant go to the dnc and we wanted to be involved somehow. Were 18 and just registered to votes. Reporter its where young voters are learning about the evolution of american politics and where democratic history is beginning to click. Tiny young minds guessing how many knex bricks it took to build this liberty bill. A photo in the oval office, a special memory as history unfolds at the dnc. How does it feel taking part it in philadelphia where democracy was born . Oh, didnt think of it that way. I thought philadelphia was not too far from west orange so i would come. Reporter so it is just day one of the dnc but political fest, in fact, started on friday. It runs six days so it runs through wednesday of this week. The tickets for adults are 15, 5 for anyone under 18 and one ticket and you can catch a flash bus to get to any of the search locations for political fest around the city. The one ticket, its good for every day. Im cidney long in center city, back for you. All right, cidney long, thank you. Our dnc coverage getting you started.
