Early this morning, state lawmakers passed a 23 cents per gallon gas tax increase that governor Chris Christie could sign by friday. New jersey always has had the lowest gas prices in our tristate region. Today, the average is 2. 03. 2. 18 in delaware. But if the new tax passes, new jersey wont be the cheapest anymore. Todays average, for example, would be hiked to 2. 26. Nbc 10 south Jersey Bureau reporter sydney long has more on the reason for the proposed increase, and reaction from drivers. Sydney . Reporter well, denise, of course, one reason for this hike right now is to fix new jerseys deteriorating roads. The reason its all playing out in trenton as we speak, because state lawmakers are working to finalize the budget before the start of the fiscal year which is now just three days away, july 1st. And in order to offset what drivers may pay, a little bit more here at the pumps, governor christie is offering a fairness package. It could save you elsewhere when you go shopping. Unfortunately, the thing that we all have to deal with. But it definitely made me fill up my tank today. Reporter with an hour back and forth for work each day, akeen and dozens of other drivers arent happy with trenton lawmakers right now. Definitely not something people would be excited about. Reporter paying 23 cents more at the pumps. Governor Chris Christie struck a deal with the lawmakers in the a assemb assembly, in exchange for decrease of sales tax from 7 to 6 . That would be phased in over two years. In turn, the gas hike will replenish the states nearly dry Transportation Trust fund. And push more money towards fixing roads and bridges. Theres a lot of flat tires, a lot of people that get damaged rims on their cars. Thats also frustrating as well. Reporter aaa midatlantic calls it long overdue, that will not deter holiday travelers if they vote yes on thursday. Right now we dont see it will have an immediate impact. People have already planned their trips. Theyre looking forward to their summer vacations. Reporter a 15,000 miles per year with a 20gallon tank equates to 3 bucks a week. Anyone who uses our roads will pay it. Weve got a lot of drivers who come into our state that take advantage of our cheaper gas prices. And that will continue. Reporter this deal does not come at a completely awful time. Considering this time last summer we were all paying about 50 cents more per gallon at the pump. We did reach out to several senators today. Senate president sweeney as well as diane allen who was just trying to reach me back as our story was on the air just now, so we will hear from those senators and find out how they may vote come this thursday.
