Three men stormed in, they tried to rob the reading Convenience Store last night, and thats when workers, yeah, they fought back. Right now two of the suspects are dead and police are still looking for a third person. Nbc 10s doug shimell has the very latest from investigators in reading. As you can see, shooting coming in. Reporter the store owners say three masked men walked into the latino meat market without saying a word and opened fire. Rounds hit the cigarette sign and candy machine before Reading Police say the owner and his brother fired back, killing two of the robbers. I was worried about they are great people. Reporter regular customers say they know the employees are traumatized but theres little time to think. Coming into your establishment and start shooting at you, youre going to have to defend yourself. I think thats just a good call. They came in with guns blazing. Reporter late in the day, the District Attorney said no charges are warranted against the store owners. This is a case of selfdefense. This is a case of justification and, quite frankly, simple and easy decision. District attorney tells doug this is the most violent Armed Robbery he has seen and they are offering a 10,000 reward for help finding the gunman who took off. We have some new information on a shooting that left a teenager dead in north philadelphia yesterday afternoon. Today Police Identified the victim as 16yearold celine west. West and a friend were riding bikes when investigators say two men jumped out of a car and fired more than a dozen shots at them. Commissioner Charles Ramsey had this to say about the shooting and those two men police are now looking for. They didnt shoot them and then go to church. Thats what these guys do, okay, its what they do. They are violent and until they are off the street, behind bars, it is not going to change. Celine wests friend was not hurt. More sunshine up towards the pocono mountains, and that is a sign of things to come. Our air is coming from the northwest and eventually were going to be clearing out tonight. That rain to the south staying far to the south. Right now the temperatures being affected by the clouds, only in the 60s, but generally low 60s, fairly uniform across the area. Its going to go into the 70s starting tomorrow. For tonight, very light wind, we start off with the clouds, then they start to break up. You can see the wind is calm for much of the night, then as we go into tomorrow morning, we start the day off in the 40s. Were going to be starting off with some sunshine. Thanks, glenn. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with new information on a halloween scare. Police in Chester County interviewed a second possible victim who found needles in his candy. Deanna durante is joining us live at the Police Station where police are trying to figure out, first of all, where this candy came from and if any other cases, in fact, do exist. Deanna . Reporter detectives just left here at the police department, they are assisting investigators here trying to answer those questions tonight. We can tell you the second child, according to police, does not know the little boy that you met last night on nbc 10 news. The first child who reported the tainted candy bars and say they dont yet know the point of origin where the candy came from. They are children. How come youre doing stuff like that to children . Reporter in addition to dozens of kids trickortreating in her neighborhood, it was also full of Police Saturday night. She says thats why its so shocking kids would find tainted candy there. Police sent these images with sewing needles inside. The first was found saturday night. Everybody check their candy. My mom sent an email to all the other friends. Reporter police tell us today they are still investigating where the candy came from. They say in addition to miguel, another child reported finding tampered candy and were waiting to interview the girl also trickortreating in the same neighborhood. Police say both kids reported they were trickortreating in the borough near south union and west south streets. Since reports started airing, parents in the area say all candy is off limits. We check the candy, we want to be careful what they eat. Probably we want to throw some away. Reporter now again, part of the Police Investigation is where did that candy come from. Did those needles, were they placed in the candy bars at someones home, did they come from a store or point of distribution, all things investigators tell us they are looking at this evening. A man has been charged with lying to investigators about finding candy with needles in it. Robert ludru told officers he found four sewing needles in four separate pieces of candy, but after interviewing him, investigators determined he put the needles there himself. We have new information on a cold case from nearly a decade ago. Police have arrested a philadelphia man for a murder that happened during a south jersey Home Invasion. Gloucester county prosecutors announced today that john blocker has now been charged in the death. Authorities say intruders entered his Washington Township home back in january 2006 while he and his wife were out. They tied up his children and then they beat him to death when he got home. They believe robbery was the motive for this crime. Holidays aint the same, birthdays aint the same, but we knew eventually somebody was going to get arrested. We just didnt know when. Its a blessing that today we received a phone call that somebody is arrested for this situation. Right now hes being held in philadelphia as he awaits extradition back to new jersey. Happening now, president obama is wrapping up a visit to north jersey. This is a live picture from the law school at Rutgers University in newark. We expect the president to speak here at the podium around 4 20 this afternoon. He spent the day in north jersey pushing for reforms to the criminal justice system. He visited a Drug Treatment Center and hosted a round table discussion at the law school. Governor Chris Christie had a message for the president during his visit today. He posted this video to his instagram page. The message reads, dear mr. President , weve been getting this done since 2010, nice of you to show up. It then lists some of the governors achievements on prison reform. Governor christie was in camden today himself. Thats where he attended a round table discussion about the success of the Camden County police department. Christie has boasted about homicide and overall crime numbers plummeting since the creation of the Regional Force in 2013. Today christie signed an executive order designating november 5th as Law Enforcement Appreciation Day this year and every year. It will coincide with the annual blue mass in new jersey. Officer who makes an arrest for Armed Robbery in this city is the same officer who might be found playing basketball with kids in the neighborhood after school. It is an extraordinary model during a really difficult and troubling time in our country. Christie also said that policing in camden is proof that there does not need to be a divide between officers and the communities they serve. Well, this was just in time, a life line came through today to help keep the philadelphia Public Schools open, at least for a little while longer. This morning the School District learned it would get a 250 million loan to cover costs for the rest of the year. The money will come from two separate banks lending 125 million each, but interest will cost the district an additional 2. 5 million. 125 days without agreeing to a new budget. Nbc 10 made numerous attempts to meet up with Melissa Murray bailey on the campaign trail, as well, today, but she did not return our requests. We did meet with both candidates for this weekends edition of nbc 10 at issue. We talked about hiring a new police commissioner. Charles ramsays recent announcement he will retire as philadelphias top cop in january ended all speculation about whether a new boss would keep him on the job. Now the question is, will it be someone inside or outside the department . Both mayoral candidates, democrat jim kenney and republican Melissa Murray bailey discussed the issue, but wouldnt name their picks. Do you see the need for a national search, or are you still sticking by the fact theres plenty of talent here . Im a big fan of chuck ramsay, hes a terrific human being, in addition to being a terrific police commissioner, but we have no need to go outside our department. Yeah, i have mentioned some names in the past. Now that its real, i dont feel super comfortable talking about that, because thats peoples lives. They really are putting their hand out for the job at this point. You had said you would install first Deputy Commissioner ross in the past. I said id look to people like Deputy Commissioner ross. While both candidates are staying mum on specifics, they are speaking out on the importance of making Community Policing a priority. I think we need to reform stop and frisk. Stop and frisk needs to be a tool that every Police Officer has in their bag, but we need to make sure first and foremost peoples Constitutional Rights arent violated. I think we need to focus on the feeling out there amongst citizens that the police arent fair to them and we respect what our police do. They put the lives on the line and are willing to do so. In the garden state, voters choose a new General Assembly tomorrow for the first time in more than a decade. The assembly is the top statewide race in new jersey. All 80 seats are up for election. Right now democrats control the chamber and experts say they are expected to hold on to their majority. New jersey voters will also have their say in county and local races. Police need your help to find the attacker who sexually assaulted a woman in an alley in the citys west ward. Investigators say the crime happened around 8 30 last night on north eighth street near wood avenue. The suspect is described as a man whos at least 55, weighing 200 pounds and has long dreadlocks. This afternoon there may be some closure for a philadelphia family who lost their loved ones on roosevelt boulevard. Today we learned the man who killed a woman and three of her children while street racing on the boulevard will spend 17 to 34 years in prison. A jury found him guilty of thirddegree murder charges back in july. He ran over and killed a woman and three of her sons who were crossing the boulevard in 2013. A fourth son survived the accident. The driver was racing holloman, whos serving five to ten years in prison after pleading guilty. Continuing with the investigation into this weekends deadly plane crash in egypt, a russian jet crashed there on saturday killing all 224 people onboard. Nbc 10s keith jones is in our digital operations center, hes following todays developments. Keith, what is the latest on Recovery Efforts . Well, jim, search teams say they are finished. Theyve combed through the crash site all afternoon. The site, by the way, is nearly an eightmile area in egypts sinai peninsula. The russian jet broke apart in midair and the debris is so scattered the tail was found three miles from the cockpit. Airline Officials Say there were no technical problems but only a mechanical impact on the plane could have caused a midair breakup like this, but investigators say its too early to comment on a possible cause. The bodies of the first victims arrived in russia this morning. The remaining victims are expected there tonight. A group affiliated with isis said it downed the plane, but authorities have dismissed that claim. Back in egypt investigators could know within the next day or two whether a bomb downed this jet. Back here at home, tonight the woman who runs the Veterans Affairs offices will face members of congress. The House Committee on Veterans Affairs subpoenaed rubens to testify this evening, a week after she and other officials were invited to testify but the va didnt allow them to attend. Lawmakers want to question them about the alleged misuse of the va Relocation Program and incentives. Following a report how criminal intent by rubens and another director from minnesota, but neither has been charged. Today septa broke ground on a new project in philadelphia that will help disabled riders. Crews will install two elevators at the 40th street marketfrankford line, giving riders full access from the street, all the way up to the station platform. The next shower chance, well, well tell you about that. Not a whole lot of chances for showers in the next week or so. Got a lot of clouds out there. We had a lot of clouds today, and that prevented the temperature from being even higher. 62 degrees, wind is light out of the south, three degrees cooler than this time yesterday because of the clouds. We have a lot more sunshine yesterday. You can see it 63 in allentown, warmer than philadelphia, because the clouds are thinner to the north. And so its a little bit cooler to the south, where the clouds are thicker. Tomorrow there will be sunshine everywhere, and lets see how we have it. We have warmer weather, 72 in chicago, 73 in wichita, some of that air headed this way as we go into the next couple of days. Theres the clouds, no rain associated with it, you can see the clear skies from central and western pennsylvania, the rain is way down to the south and not moving this way. So as we go through the evening, we expect clearing. Thats going to allow the temperature to drop down into the 40s, but then thats just seasonably cool, and tomorrow with all of that sunshine from morning to night, look at the temperatures going into the 70s.
