Workers also finished installing large video monitors in the area and more porta potties were unloaded and added to the dozens that already line the walnut street bridge next to 30th street station. Its taking people longer and longer to get in and out of center city as more roads close. Going to need patience this week. A live look at the ben franklin parkway where the inner and outer lanes are closed in preparation for the holy fathers visit. Also today the no parking zone expanded to the second phase. People parked in the areas you see shaded in yoel low have to move their cars by 9 00 this morning. No parking in the light green started last night. Nbc 10s doug shimell is live in fairmount. Tell us more about that. Reporter well, they may be following the schedule, but apparently not all of the no parking signs are going up where they are supposed to be. They thought they were okay. We were watching every day for signs. They never posted any signs. Secret service told us this street was okay. Ppa was confused about it. Reporter residents say the tow squad showed up this morning and went to work. Then all of a sudden they came and they claimed that we either took down the signs and also that we should have known. Reporter josh roberts and many other residents bought placards that let them stay on the street until 10 00 p. M. Thursday night. As for the towing at 20th and brandywine, they stopped as suddenly as they started and left. The

You see the size of the operation, made in america, popes visit bigger than all those events. Each day the restricted areas are going to widen. If you use the parkway in or out of the city, its going to get tricky as the week goes on. This also means more spillover as we pan over to 76, the schuylkill expressway. To do that we are bringing back a very familiar face, terry r ruggels is back with the nbc 10 team to help bolster the coverage. I feel like a reservist thats been set up, but let me set the stage from 1979. Back in 1979 you could buy a gallon of gasoline for 86 cents a gallon, a new car for about 3,700, and everyone was all the rage about a brand new device they called the walkman. Here in the tristate area, we were all atwitter and the excitement about a brand new pope, john paul ii. The crowd outside the old
Convention Center across the street from
Childrens Hospital was restless. The pope was running almost an hour behind schedule. Patients, parents, and nurses in the hospital were craning their necks at the windows waiting to get a look at the leader of the catholic church. Can you tell me whos coming . Will you please tell me whos coming . The pope reporter when john paul ii blessed the hospital as he stood in his car, it was obvious that he was not coming up to see the children. It really was just a last minute thing. Reporter kay johnson, a nurse in 1979 made a decision that turned into hospital history. I thought, were going downstairs. Everybody said youre crazy. Were going downstairs. Reporter johnson led more than a dozen patients parents, nurses, and me down to the street. We just wanted to be close. The crowd started saying, let the children come. Let the children come. Reporter kay johnson and the rest of us were escorted across the street to stand right next to the
Convention Center front doors, and within minutes
Pope John Paul ii walked out and right over to our small band. He blessed each one of us, the staff included, and gave us each a rosary. And those rosaries that we got, we kept them locked up in where the narcotics were on our floor and parents would borrow them in times of need. Reporter johnson, a lutheran, says the pope lived in everybodys spirits, giving parents hope. And the child she was with showed improvement. The next day he did walk. It really was something, one of the best days of my life. Well, kay says shell watch this next pope from home, thank you, but that event 36 years ago is a memory shell cherish and story she loves to keep telling. We love you came back to tell us, as well.
