today. >> it's traumatizing. then it's close to home. >> reporter: authorities still have not released the name of the person killed here or whether that person was the subject of the investigation here. however, there is still more to do here because the shooting involved an agent, a shooting review team from fbi headquarters is on its way here this afternoon. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. a former philadelphia youth football coach who molested several young boys will spend the rest of his life behind bars. today, a judge sentenced leon watson, jr. to 114 to 228 years in prison. earlier this year, philadelphia jury convicted watson of sexually assaulting five of his players along with a developmentally disabled adult. he used to coach the raiders football team. police arrested watson in 2013 after getting an anonymous tip. a cooler and cloudy start to the day. nbc 10 here in northeast philadelphia this morning where this group took advantage of a break from the heat to play some football. there are some changes headed our way once again. nbc 10 first alert weather radar tracking the return of rain and storms. let's check in with nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> how will the rain affect our weekend plans? >> we haven't seen rain on a weekend in a long time. we are likely to see some this weekend. we got a one-day break, nice comfortable weather. even the clouds that have been around, starting to move out. back to the west, those are rain showers in ohio and down into kentucky and that will be coming in tomorrow by this time tomorrow, it should be raining in a good bit of the area. temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s. the humidity is not too bad. so it will be a really nice evening as we get the skies clearing out, the humidity does not increase much until during the day tomorrow. so it's really nice out there. temperature down to 70 degrees by 10:00. more on the timing of the weekend rain with the seven-day in a few minutes. to a developing story now. at least 87 people are dead after a crane collapsed at the grand mosque in the muslim holy city of mecca. more than 180 people were hurt when part of a huge crane crashed through the mosque's roof today. officials still trying to figure out why the collapse happened but it was raining at the time with high gusty winds. hundreds of thousands of people are expected to arrive in the saudi city later this month for the annual muslim hajj pilgrimage. authorities say a woman confessed to making a half million dollars of fake cancer claims. cynthia clary was arraigned this morning. prosecutors with the bucks county d.a.'s office says she submitted fraudulent claims and forged documents over the course of two years to her insurance company, claiming both she and her husband had cancer. the district attorney says she actually received more than $130,000 in payments. she reportedly told authorities she submitted the false claims so she could pay off her bills. new information this afternoon on that plane that crashed off the coast of new jersey yesterday. investigators now saying there was no radio communication from the plane for the final two hours of that flight. the single engine muni m-20 went down yesterday afternoon about seven miles off the coast of atlantic city. it was flying into the ac international airport from michigan. it was bad weather at the time and the coast guard has suspended its search now for the 68-year-old pilot. he is believed to have been the only person on board. the cause of this crash remains under investigation. a burlington county school got the all-clear after a scare involving a fake grenade this morning. police found this suspicious item near the playground of wilbur watts intermediate school in the city of burlington. emergency plans were put into place while the bomb squad checked it out. they discovered it was a replica hand grenade and no one was hurt. we are just over two weeks away from pope francis' visit to philadelphia. the nbc 10 countdown clock showing there are 14 days and 17 hours until the pontiff lands in our area. today we learned new information about the impact on law enforcement, emergency planners, hospitals and hotels as well. nbc 10's keith jones is tracking these developments in philadelphia but our team coverage begins with deanna durante in conshohocken where we also learned the national guard will be on patrol. >> reporter: yeah, about 300 members of the national guard have been deployed and some of them will be here in conshohocken along the schuykill river trail. from where i'm standing to the philadelphia museum of art is about seven miles if you follow this trail. while county officials say they can't prevent people from riding or biking in to see the pope, they are certainly hoping that this will not be an option that they take. >> we will have citizens from the pennsylvania national guard, pennsylvania state police, sheriff's department montgomery county and all the resources lower merion has. >> reporter: while the pope is in town he will be staying in lower merion. that's a huge undertaking for police who are working with the secret service and 100 officers will be there for security and traffic control. >> we are bringing two helicopters into the area. one fixed wing aircraft. >> reporter: security in lower merion is a huge focus. officials say the entire county is going to be impacted. >> it is critically important that people in montgomery county sign up for an alert system you can get on your computer or phone. >> reporter: officials say huge concerns, traffic on major road and traffic jamming up side streets. the expressway will shut down at conshohocken, causing backups everywhere. >> all the highways are going to be impacted by the schuykill and other roads that are going to have temporary closures. some ramps on 95 will be closed. you will have backups on 309, 202. we have route 23. >> reporter: planners are setting up food and water stations in case people are in gridlock for hours. doctors will be in special outfitted vehicles equipped with medical supplies to reach those who may be stuck in traffic. ems tents and popup hospitals will also be set up. >> the county has taken a number of precautions to make sure that we can treat a very large number of patients if need be. the center of that will be at lankenau hospital. >> reporter: the tents will have necessary medication and supplies for people that can't get to hospitals, also to relieve stress on local hospitals. along the bike path it's bright now but at night there won't be any lights. one of the reasons there will be police and national guard here getting people home safely. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> here's something of a surprise, perhaps. with two weeks to go, there are still thousands of hotel rooms available here in philadelphia. >> this afternoon, the city made it a point to let people know about the vacancies. keith jones has that story. >> officials have a new rallying cry. >> will you be there? >> i'll be there! >> will you be there? >> i'll be there! >> this was the scene in center city this afternoon. there has been plenty of concern that hotel rooms aren't selling. there are still 3,000 available. mayor nutter says the hotels didn't know what to expect. >> maybe in some instances, some of the potential customers may not have necessarily thought that there would be hotel rooms available here in philadelphia. >> the mayor says some hotels are dropping prices and offering incentives, so activity has started to pick up. 3,000 rooms are still available. there are about 16,000 hotel rooms throughout philadelphia. about 1100 in center city. live in the anniversary of the september 11th terrorist attacks. we will show you a live picture of new york's freedom tower, built in place of the twin towers that fell on that day. here in our area, an emotional day at the garden of reflection memorial. 18 men and women from bucks county lost their lives in the attacks 14 years ago. their names etched in glass right by this fountain. every year visitors come by the hundreds to the memorial in lower makefield to honor those who lost their lives. new york will be bathed in light this evening, 14 years after the terrorist attack of september keep the memories alive. dave wagner, nbc news, new york. >> back here in our area, memorial walk was held today in philadelphia. >> they walked in remembrance of the hundreds of civilians and first responders who lost their lives. philadelphia police, fire and drum corps provided the sound track for this morning's firefighters memorial walk in old city. mayor michael nutter, police commissioner charles ramsey and fire commissioner derek sawyer were in attendance. the procession concluded with a moment of silence. in camden county, dozens of pennsauken residents and first responders placed nearly 3,000 flags at the township's 9/11 memorial. one flag for each person who died in the attacks. last night's rain didn't stop the community from coming together. >> mother nature wasn't necessarily cooperative this year but you know, the community still came out and weep have the flags out and the tradition has continued. that's a good thing. >> pennsauken residents have been placing the flags every year since 2003. we will show you how many other local communities marked the solemn anniversary at 5:00 and 6:00. washington, d.c. police confirm that a lunchtime shooting at union station is not connected to terrorism or the anniversary of 9/11. d.c. police say a security guard saw a man stab a woman inside the nearby building. the guard chased that suspect to the train station and eventually shot the man after he lunged at the guard with a knife. the man and woman initially stabbed are both expected to recover. union station was briefly evacuated but has now reopened. flags outside the station are flying at half staff to mark the 9/11 anniversary. new information this afternoon in the investigation into that series of freeway shootings in phoenix. authorities say two persons of interest have been detained and are being questioned. as of this morning, there have been 11 confirmed shootings in the past 12 days, all happening along an eight-mile stretch of interstate 10 in phoenix. republican presidential hopeful donald trump is now the sole owner of the miss universe pageant. trump purchased nbc's half of the miss universe organization and now owns 100% of it. trump announced the move on twitter. he also settled all lawsuits with nbc universal which severed ties with trump earlier this year. tonight, donald trump will appear on the "tonight show with jimmy fallon." trump's appearance comes as a new poll out of iowa shows he's the top candidate in the state for the gop. according to the quinnipiac university poll, trump has the support of 27% of the iowa gop caucus participants. rounding out the top four candidates, ben carson, ted cruz and jeb bush. wisconsin governor scott walker fell from the top spot back in july to number ten. >> on the democratic side, joe biden has yet to officially enter race for the white house and thanks to late night television, we got a glimpse into what's holding him back. the vice president says he's not emotionally ready to run for president. during a taping for the late show last night, biden very candidly told stephen colbert that anybody running for president should commit themselves fully to the cause and because he's still mourning his son beau who died earlier this year, biden said he wasn't sure he could make that commitment. >> i don't think any man or woman should run for president unless they can look at the folks out there and say i promise you, you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy. i would be lying if i said that i knew i was there. >> a new poll released overnight shows biden support rising to 20%. he is third behind bernie sanders and hillary clinton, whose support dropped ten points over the last month to 37%. the trial for the jersey jam bridge scandal has been pushed back to next year. a new jersey federal judge filed an order yesterday which will push back the trial for two former chris christie allies until march 7th. former christie deputy chief of staff bridget kelly and port authority executive bill baronei are facing charges. the delayed trial date will give the attorneys more time to prepare. they are accused of a scheme to close lanes at the george washington bridge as payback against the mayor of fort lee for not supporting christie's re-election bid. both have pleaded not guilty. former port authority official david wildstein is expected to testify during the trial. he has already pleaded guilty. governor christie has not been directly implicated in the case, nor has he been charged. millions more americans may need high blood pressure medication. the national institutes of health found that treating high blood pressure more aggressively than usual cuts the risk of heart disease and death by 25% in people over the age of 50. patients are often told to get their target systolic blood pressure below 140. this study suggests they should aim for below 120. a shot at history came to an end in the past 90 minutes. tennis star serena williams lost in the u.s. open semifinals, abruptly ending her bid for the first grand slam since 1988. in a surprising upset, number one ranked williams fell to unseeded roberta vinci. it's the first time she has beaten williams, let alone played in a grand slam semifinal. after the match, williams says she didn't feel pressure and felt good about her overall season. steffi graf remains the only player to win all four grand slams in a single season. well, we had a lot of rain yesterday and into last night but things have really changed here. we have a dry start to our weekend but it's not going to stay dry. we have got some showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. not a total washout, but we do expect some rain. then a week of sunshine coming in. pretty amazing seven-day forecast. speaking of sunshine, that's what we are starting to get out there. the clouds breaking up and moving out. 81 degrees in philadelphia now. it's five degrees warmer than this time yesterday when it was pouring rain. we are in the upper 70s to low 80s right now, 75 degrees in mt. pocono. we are in the 70s in most of new jersey because it's a lot cloudier there. it certainly has not to do with a sea breeze. there is a land breeze at most locations. the radar estimates for yesterday and last night's rain, that bull's eye right over philadelphia. and the delaware river and camden and gloucester counties, just got pounded last evening. we had some flash flood warnings. that is six and a half inches radar estimate right across the river. now let's see if there were any amounts like that. yeah. sewell, new jersey, posted six inches of rain. glenolden 5.3. philadelphia, 5.77. that's one of the wettest days we have ever recorded. wilmington, nearly four inches. allentown, 3.5 inches. we will get some rain this weekend but nothing like that. there's the storm that's moving out. we have drier air moving in. here comes the next area of showers. that is in ohio right now. it's not going to be affecting us during the night tonight or first thing tomorrow morning. but with the southeast wind, moisture's increasing, the clouds should pick up and then here comes the rain. it's mostly in the afternoon and into the nightfall. you can see some of it is on the heavy side. we are not talk about just a couple little showers here. but it is not a steady rain and it does not look like it will last into sunday. sunday, we expect a mix of clouds and sun, just a chance of a shower. nothing like what we are going to be seeing saturday afternoon. mostly clear, nice tonight, 67 for the low in philadelphia, 57 north and west. tomorrow we have the clouds building up early and most of the rainfall's during the afternoon and at night. some of it on the heavy side along with some thunderstorms. just a chance of an afternoon shower on sunday. then it's breezy on monday and look at that. look at this. sunshine every single day, monday through friday as cuffing him. then he will lead him away. this all happens in less than one minute. new york's police commissioner says blake was mistaken for an identity theft suspect and has apologized. the officer is on desk duty. a bankruptcy filing for a popular philadelphia children's museum. the please touch museum has declared chapter 11 bankruptcy according to our partners at the philadelphia business journal. the museum plans to stay open while it tries to raise $10 million by next march. the please touch museum defaulted on its debt back in 2013 and has been negotiating with bond holders ever will be backed up well on to 42 down towards the atlantic city expressway. >> reporter: getting anywhere close to philadelphia by car could be an all day affair. >> if traffic backs up on our interstates to the point where you have stopped traffic in the right lane and 70 mile an hour traffic in the left lane, we have to consider that a safety issue. >> reporter: from the nerve center, traffic signal engineers will also be able to monitor the congestion and physically be able to adjust or change the traffic signals out on the roads by means of remote control. >> this shows you what's going on on the philadelphia side. this is the jersey side. >> reporter: the d.o.t. has developed software complete with a pope francis icon so all traffic agencies, local and state police, will be on the same page. >> whether that's transporting somebody that's injured, putting out a fire or going after the bad guys, we want to make sure that our roads have some capacity to do that. >> reporter: they can't make all predictions now. >> if you're looking for when are we going to shut the roads, that will be based on what traffic we see. >> reporter: this much is a promise. >> if we pope's full itinerary while he's here. back to our breaking news. we have been telling you about a motorcycle officer has been injured in a hit and run. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal just arrived at the hospital where that officer is being treated this afternoon. what can you tell us? >> reporter: i'm actually just getting a call from the police commissioner right now. he's telling us the description of this vehicle is a pontiac grand prix with a green trunk, an older model, and that's what -- green hood or trunk, he is telling me, early model pontiac grand prex. that's the suspect vehicle. this chester officer was on duty. he was taken here to chester crozer medical center. he was tossed from his motorcycle. let me show you a live look at the scene. this is happening right across from the harrah's casino in chester, 291 is shut down, much of that area is shut down because of this accident. we can show you video from skyforce 10. the good news from the police commissioner, they are telling us this officer is alert, he is expected to survive despite being thrown from this motorcycle. right now, police are searching for that early model, maybe year 2000 pontiac grand prix, red or burgundy color. those officers are now out looking for this vehicle. anybody who may see it, asked to call 911. the late good news we are getting here at the hospital is that this officer is expected to survive after being tossed from this motorcycle. he is alert and conscious at this moment. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> appreciate the update. rutgers university officials met behind closed doors today in the weake of a series of arrest of students athletes. today's private board of governors meeting was to discuss, quote, athletic matters and anticipated or pending litigation. in all, eight students including six football players have been arrested in connection with a series of home invasions and assaults. all the students have been suspended pending the investigation. we are now hearing from the new york prison guard who helped two inmates escape. she gave an exclusive interview to the "today" show's matt lauer telling him she was sucked into the plot. mitchell admitted to helping richard matt and david sweat escape prison by providing them with the tools they needed to do so. in an emotional jailhouse interview, mitchell revealed to lauer how the inmates got so close to her and what she brought into the prison to help them. she says she was in over her head, felt completely controlled by richard matt and was in a depression. mitchell also addressed rumors of inmate relationships with matt and sweat, saying she knows it's hard to believe but she does love her husband. after the escape, matt was shot and killed back in june. sweat was shot and captured and is back in prison. the candid and emotional interview with joyce mitchell will air in two parts next week on nbc 10. they will start on the "today" show monday and friday. then stay tuned for a gear. mobile eye clinic moves to chester high school this weekend. the free services are available from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both tomorrow and sunday. how long your kids have to eat could be just as important as what they're chowing down on. a new study found students with short lunch periods tend to eat fewer healthy foods. researchers at harvard say kids with 20 minute lunch periods ate less vegetables and drank less milk than kids who had at least 25 minutes to finish their food. the faster food times also led to increased weight. diet soda drinkers may want to put that can down. researchers looked at the food and beverage consumption of more than 22,000 adults for a couple of days. coffee and diet soda drinkers consumed the fewest calories but also ate more unhealthy foods loaded with fat and sugar. experts say diet soda drinkers may feel justified in eating more. they may need more food to feel satisfied. glenn? it's a beautiful end to the work week. lots of blue skies police commissioner, who tells me the officer is an accident investigator with 12 years with the department. the commissioner says he was quote, bounced around quite a bit but the officer is alert and the weekend in much of the area since june, but this weekend is going to change things. we have a dry start to the weekend but it's not going to stay dry. we have some showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for at least part of the weekend. it's not a total washout. then we have a week of sunshine coming in after that. we have dry conditions now. 81 degrees, the wind is only eight miles an hour. five degrees warmer than it was this time yesterday when we had rain and storms all over the place. what about the severe threat for tomorrow? the flood threat down from what we saw yesterday, due to the scattered nature of these storms, but the lightning threat is up a little bit and the gusty wind threat as well. so there is a slight chance of some of those storms tomorrow could be severe. we have to monitor that. the temperatures now in the upper 70s to low 80s in most of the area. we had more clouds in new jersey so that's why the temperatures are lower. the rainfall amounts are pretty incredible. across the river, sewell, new jersey, six inches of rain. philadelphia international, 4.77. that's the eighth wettest day in recorded history of philadelphia. wilmington, about four inches. allentown, three and a half inches. that storm is offshore, pretty impressive one for this time of year. and the clouds with it, well, they are leaving as well. here comes the next area. so this break in between is not lasting very long. you can see it's a fairly solid area of rain, a couple of thunderstorms in there, nothing like what we saw yesterday, though. as we go ahead in time, the temperature is down into the 60s and even the 50s in some parts of the area by tomorrow morning. that's nice and comfortable. and we start off dry. if there's any sunshine tomorrow it's generally in the morning. as the moisture increases, look what happens. by even early afternoon, maybe even midday hour we could see showers and storms develop as moisture comes up from the south. it's not just the system coming in from the west. then at 4:00, we have more showers and storms around. knocking the temperature down into the 70s. we may get some breaks at times but we will also be seeing more showers even into tomorrow night. then sunday is looking a lot better. tonight, mostly clear and nice, 67 for the low in philadelphia, 57 north and west. tomorrow, most of those showers and storms game for the new england patriots to find themselves right in the middle of another controversy. early in last night's season opener, the headset system used by the steelers coaches went haywire, it was picking up patriots radio broadcasts of the game. those problems lasted for much of the first half. after the game, a league spokesman said the stadium's power grid and the rain contributed to the headset malfunction. the steelers head coach mike tomlin said this is not the first time this has happened. >> there was a report that your radios went out? >> that's always the case. >> here? >> yes. >> are you saying that every time you play here -- >> i said what i said. >> the patriots complained of headset issues but not to the extent of the steelers. today, the steelers decided not to file a complaint with the league. as kids go back to school and football season starts up again, a lot of parents are worried about the risk of concussion. >> a local college is wiring up its players to >> reporter: i just got off the phone with the commissioner here in chester. he tells me this. the officer is going to survive. he was on duty at the time, on his police motorcycle, when it appears that he was blindsided, hit and then thrown some 30, maybe 40 feet off his motorcycle. the suspect vehicle took off but this officer was taken here to chester crozer medical center. he is here right now being checked on. again, good news is he's going to survive. let me show you the scene. this is along 291 in chester, actually just across from the harrah's casino down there. that whole road has been closed off because of this investigation. heavy traffic delays. police are saying it appears this officer was struck head-on by an early model, maybe year 2000 pontiac grand prix, possibly with a green trunk or green hood. the car is likely red or burgundy. this officer is a 12 year veteran of the police force. as detectives continue to search for that hit and run driver, we are told that this officer is expected to be okay. ironical
