the next chance of rain and snow. honoring a hero tonight. hundreds remembered the life of new jersey state trooper frankie williams. >> his mother filled with tears, remembering the latest state trooper to lose his life in a car crash. trooper williams died on monday night when an erratic driver crashed in to his cruiser on route 55 in millville. drew smith reports on the overwhelming sorrow felt by so many and the support to first responders. >> there was a huge turnout down here at the leesburg fire station where a lot of first responders came out to honor the memory of their fallen brother. ♪ how great thou art >> a gathering in the dark to show how much light frankie williams with brought to the county. >> an individual 0 who chose to sacrifice in order to protect us. >> reporter: a man who even at traffic stops brought out the best of people. >> officer, i want to thank you for being so kind. >> reporter: victoria williams got emotional remembering her son. >> everyone's in tears because he's always been good. >> reporter: earlier this week the 31-year-old responded to a call for an out-of-control driver. when the driver 61-year-old lloyd rugby smashed in to the trooper's car. both men did not survive. >> frankie is a hero because god knows what would have happened if that driver continued up 55. >> reporter: across the country and in the garden state, traffic incidents are the leading cause of death for officers. >> we know we are taking that risk as soon as we leave the door. >> reporter: he is the fourth trooper to die in a crash in four years. troopers tell me road safety is an important part of training but sometimes things happen. priority number one is trying to protect people. it is time to rally around the williams' family. >> i appreciate what you have done for me. every time i fall down you pick me back up. thank you. drew smith, nbc 10 news. a short time ago we learned the funeral arrangements for trooper williams, the service will be monday at noon at the atlantic city boardwalk hall. there have been three state troopers killed in crashes in the past year. sean cullen was killed in a crash in march and trooper eli mccarson last september. other news tonight, a man allegedly murders his mother and tells a random driver about it in bucks county. police found the body of rebecca cope inside of a home in lower makefield township this afternoon. it's not clear how she died. investigators say her son zachary cope had stopped a passing driver and told them about the crime. he allegedly gave the address of where the zachary cope is charged with homicide. a man facing charges for allegedly embezzling $56,000 from a youth football league. michael deflorio is the form per treasure of the youth football league. prosecutors say he wrote fake checks to himself over the course of the last two years. they say he used a debit card linked to the league's bank account to make withdrawals and purchases. a man whose legendary status is out of this world. john glenn was a national hero. former astronaut became the first american to orbit the earth but accomplished much more. this afternoon the space legend passed away. nbc's keith jones looks at his remarkable life, including his training here in the delaware valley. >> reporter: the centrifuge spins at 80 miles an hour at the facility in warminster. in the '60s john glenn and other astronauts trained for a potentially dangerous trip in to space. >> there were problems and raised the raisk to a high degree. >> reporter: he says glenn undertook the risk in '62 becoming the first american to orbit the earth. >> his daring trip really went a long way to open the gigantic doors of human exploratioexplor >> president kennedy forbade him from space travel fearing we'd lose an american hero. so he goes from being an astronaut to a politician. glenn served four terms as a democratic senator in his home state of ohio and even ran for president. in 1998, at the age of 77. >> god speed, john glenn. >> reporter: glenn defied the odds again. becoming the oldest astronaut in space. >> i don't think you can be up here and look out the it came as she made her first visit to capitol hill since losing the presidential election. >> it's now clear that so-called fake news can have real world consequences. it's a danger that must be addressed. >> a fake news story about clinton led to a shooting last week in washington, d.c. a man told police he opened fire in a restaurant as he was investigating pizza gate. the rumor suggested clinton and her aides were running a child sex ring at the restaurant. president of the united states won't be the only job donald trump has in the new year. mr. trump will remain an executive producer on "celebrity apprentice." mgm will pay the president elect a fee that's likely five figures per episode. it will return january 2nd after two years off the air. arnold schwarzenegger will be the ne new host. donald trump stopped hosting it to pursue his political career. the president elect made another cabinet selection today. he will nominate fast food billionaire andrew pozner for labor secretary. he's the ceo of cke restaurants that owns carl's jr. and hardee hardee's. he is also open to automation saying machines never take vacations, show up late or file lawsuits. some democrats call it a war on lab labor. it will soon be tougher for your car to be towed. the city council passed a law meant to crackdown on illegal towing. now a law enforcement agency must issue a ticket before a company can tow your car. tow truck drivers lined city hall to protest this afternoon. they say the actions of a few should not force regulations for the entire industry. how much do you make now? soon potential employers will not be able to ask that question during a job interview in philadelphia. the mayor said he will sign a bill approved by council which bans employers asking for salary history. lawmakers say it makes it harder for women and minorities to close the wage gap. tonight the battle keep a fire engine open full time in wilmington. the problem is the city doesn't have enough money. one city leader hopes the state can help to pay for it. the union says keeping it open part time is risking lives and this comes after the loss of three firefighters. brandon hudson has the story. >> reporter: a city council man and local firefighters say by keeping fire engine six open you are saving tens of thousands of lives. they are asking for $300,000 to do it. tonight, wilmington fire engine six is in use after an outcry from firefighters. the engine was taken out of service on certain days last monday to save overtime costs. the controversial program is known as a rolling bypass. city councilman robert williams is appealing to the state to reel it in. >> we are asking to stop the conditional closure. >> reporter: he says they hope to get $300,000 sent by next month while the city transitions to a new mayoral administration. williams told nbc 10 he people he represents want to see the fire engine available at all times. >> they are honestly scared for their safety. the night these three firefighters died in a fire, the same engine was in bypass that evening. >> reporter: engine six was shut down the morning of a devastating september row home fire which led to the deaths of three firefighters. one of the victims, fire captain christopher leech was assigned to engine six. >> my family is directly affected by this. the whole city is affected by this. >> the firefighter was at tonight's city council meeting. he said $300,000 is a good start to keep the engine from shutting down. >> the job of the union is to fight for jobs and keep the citizens, visitor and firefighters of the city safe. >> reporter: the says he hopes the 300 grand come from the $1.5 million promised by the state for police protection in wilmington. we reached out to fire chief anthony goode and his spokesman but neither of them have a comment at this time. tonight wilmington city council approved a plan to dedicate three fire houses after each of the fallen firefighters.
