Katy zachry is checking out the slippery conditions outside. But first well begin with meteorologist bill henley in the first alert weather center. Conditions are still going downhill in parts of the area in delaware and south jersey where im tracking snow and freezing rain right now. The clouds are still over philadelphia. It is dry in the city. But just to the south in Gloucester County we have light snow moving through salem county and New Castle County. And just to the south, it is freezing rain in kent and Sussex County that is reaching now into Cape May County as well. And yes, cape may is cold enough for that ice to stick. So look for slippery conditions all around as temperatures are in the 20s from the pocano mountains where its 21 degrees to 29 in Philadelphia International and 28 at the shore and in delaware this morning. A slippery start to your day today with clouds overhead. Well see the clouds thinning out as the day goes on. And that is when well see temperatures start warming up later this morning and this afternoon. Its melting this afternoon. Noontime temperature of 35 degrees. Until then expect to find ice on the ground even in those areas that are just cloudy like wayne, Delaware County where katy zachry is live. Good morning, katy. Reporter good morning, bill. Yeah, i think a lot of people are going to be anxious for temperatures to warm up. Its cold out here but you dont just have to contend with that. Youre dealing with ice on the windshield this morning. This is actually coming on easily. When i went out to my car a few hours ago, it was not this easy. Even on the hood thats a perfect example of freezing conditions on your cars sidewalks, on your pavement untreated surfaces we have been saying throughout the morning, i hope people dont glaze over when we say untreated surfaces but they are slippery this morning. I know i almost fell as a bunch of people in the nbc 10 studio as they walked out to their car almost fell. Ive been calling Police Dispatchers and can tell you in Montgomery County a number of schools are on a twohour delay because of conditions youre looking at right now. In Chester County they tell me oxford borough has pretty icy stretches. So be careful there. And here in Delaware County where we have been throughout the morning, most of the roads are passable but just a blanket statement im getting from Police Dispatchers. It is icy out there. So be careful headed out over the next few hours. Speaking of icy conditions, traffic is beginning to move on the new jersey turnpike this morning after a deadly pileup in Middlesex County at 9 00 last night in cranberry township. One person was killed and dozens hurt after a tractortrailer jackknifed. This was near exit 8. It all caused a chainreaction crash. And we have cell phone takevideo taken at the scene. 15 cars and the cause of the crash is under investigation. Police tell us there were icy conditions at the time. And with ties to the accident, its still causing problems out there. The first alert traffic reporter jillian mele is help us to get around it. Hours ago it looked much worse with a lot more activity. The crews have done a good job to get this cleaned up by the time the morning rush happened but we have activity here. The new jersey turnpike southbound near route 33 near exit 8, heres the deal. In this area you have the inner drive and outer drive known as the car lanes and truck lanes. The truck lanes have been blocked off this morning as a result of this cleanup and this accident. Even an hour ago we still had one of the jackknifed tractortrailers involved in the accident. That got towed away within the last hour. So as you can see, just a number of Police Officers out there right now and some crews finishing up the final stage of this work they have been doing overnight. But again, if you want to avoid this area as i have been saying all morning long route 130 is going to be your best bet when it comes to septa. Norristown speed lines have suspended service due to equipment problems. And if youre taking the blue route, no accidents or delays. Drive times pretty average, 15 to 16 minutes between 76 and 95. Chris . 5 34 now. A tense situation with a good ending. Thats how airport officials in houston are describing this late night Emergency Landing. A plane departed from philadelphia. Vai sikahema is live in the Digital Operations Center. That is good news for those aboard the plane, but a spokesperson for American Airlines said the nose landing gear did not deploy. Last night around 7 30 the plane made the Emergency Landing in houston just before 10 30 in the evening. Here is the video of the plane tilted forward, surrounded by emergency crews with lights flashing. Passengers evacuated using slides on either side. One passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Shouldnt be a problem for that person, but they are certainly lucky this morning. Live in the Digital Operations Center vai sikahema, nbc 10. 5 36 now. To the atlantic casino crisis more trouble for revel this morning as owners are planning to scrap the 95 million deal to afford a developer that would have bought it this morning. Revels lawyer will ask the judge to cancel the deal with the developer because the sale did not close at midnight. Thats because the judge ruled yesterday that the sale cant proceed without considering first the rights of former businesses at revel and its energy supplier. Those entities are appealing the sale. But the potential buyer is looking to extend the sale deadline until the end of the month. 5 36 right now. Septa and one of the unions goes before a federal official today as Union Officials believe certain rules are putting workers and riders at risk. Heres the issue, all of septas train engineers work more than 40 hours a week and most work six days a week. They can do that as septa requested and got a waiver from the government on certain safety rules. Well engineers say the waiver results in tired workers and a culture trending toward minimum safety standards. A confrontation caught on camera. Stop touching me. This scene from the Atlantic City boat show has filed a complaint because of what happened in this video. Well have both sides of the story this morning. And a slippery morning ahead. The freezing rain sleet and snow has ended in philadelphia but its still falling in delaware. Right now 20s for most of the area. Well improve this afternoon. A slippery morning with more sleet, snow and freezing rain. Thats happening in south jersey. The rest of the area is seeing ice already on the ground. This afternoon, the ice will melt and the weekend turns much colder. A blast of cold air is going to be in full force on sunday. Right now, dover is reporting light freezing rain 28 degrees there. And you can see the ice buildup on the lens. This is the view here of that area. Delaware is standing by to see very slippery conditions. Over center city right now clouds. The precipitation has ended. Likely we wont see more rainfall, but still plenty of ice to go around. In the mix of snow that has been changing over back and forth the snow has been tapering off in salem county. The snow is a little heavier now in southern New Castle County. Farther to the south, this is freezing rain. Ice is building up in the dover area. Its already falling in southern kent county. Sussex county and into cape may, its a slippery situation all around. The good news is that temperatures will be climbing during the day. It will be a slow warm up to begin with. 10 00 this morning, still below freezing in philadelphia. But later this morning, thats when well get the melting with temperatures in the upper 30s. The sevenday forecast when im back in ten. Zooming into delaware, all this is freezing rain that bill was talking about, especially in the louisville area. This is a live look right at route 1 just outside of louisville. So for drivers in southern delaware this morning, you can see the roads are looking wet. But thats where we are seeing that freezing rain. So you can expect to see slippery conditions out there. A minute ago bill showed you the camera from rehoboth beach. We are not reporting an accident on route is1 in the area. We now have 160 schools closed or delayed. Well keep you posted on that as well as on the bottom of the screen. Names, addresses and Social Security numbers. The nbc 10 investigators went looking for answers when piles of tax documents turned up on a city street in philadelphia. Well tell you what we uncovered and who could be at risk. And starting the school day on an empty stomach, the just released report card that shows many schools are failing at feeding students that dont get breakfast at home. Im matt delucia live in skyforce 10. We are on highway 1 headed to kent county right now. We are at middletown in delaware where we have seen precipitation over the last 15 to 20 minutes. You can see a little bit of that hitting our windshield. It is still very dark out here. Of course we also see the headlights coming toward us in the other direction here. So traffic is moving quite smoothly here in delaware despite some light snow showers and also a little bit of mixed precipitation that this area has seen throughout the overnight hours. Of course we have also seen salt trucks out here trying to treat the roads. We are keeping everything safe. Well keep heading toward kent county, but for now live in stormforce 10 matt delucia, nbc 10 news. 5 46 now. Two new reports show success of the nationwide School Breakfast program. In the last 30 days the city has been buried under 5 1 2 feet of snow.
