Heres whats new from overnight. The last two rail cars removed from the crash site in Port Richmond are being trucked away from the scene. The workers have been out here day and night trying to restore the damaged tracks and removing the rail cars as you mentioned. The ntsb says there were no mechanical issues with the track signals or the tracks themselves. The focus is on the trainee vent recorder, the black box, if you will. Investigators spent the day looking at the front breaks and they did a 3d scan of the two most heavily damaged rail cars before taking them to a secure facility in delaware. Interviews of some of the passengers. The engineer Brandon Bastian has agreed to be interviewed in the next couple of days. Bastian has no recollection of the crash. That interview will be more about getting the engineers side of what happened as opposed to conducting an interrogation. The area meantime as we take another live look it has been released back to amtrak. Investigators say they will be back again next week to conduct what is known as a Sight Distance test. A lot more work to be done. You still see Philadelphia Police are out here. The Philadelphia Fire Department has a truck back there as well. You see all those lights behind me. The amtrak workers have been in and out all morning really trying to work feverishly to get that track repaired so that service can be restored. Its been out now going on three days. Chaos in new york city and this shows the crowd in penn station and the Ripple Effect this is having in the northeast corridor. We heard from the president of amtrak who says regular service between philadelphia and new york could be restored as early as monday. There is some good news there but unfortunately until then the Ripple Effect continues. Some good news however, from the derailment scene is that crews are making progress out there, from sky force 10 we saw them hauling in new sections of track yesterday. While they do not expect that stretch rail to be restored as i said until monday. Amtrak announced regular service between boston and new york has been fully restored. From philadelphia south to washington, d. C. Trains are still running on a modified schedule. That is expected to be restored also over the weekend hopefully by monday. Septas trenton line is also shut down because it shares rail tracks with amtraks northeast extension. I talked to a septa spokesperson who tells me in the next half hour they will have employees along the west trenton line helping travelers navigate the changes. Pennsylvania senator bob casey seen touring the crash site on wednesday. Plans to visit victims at Temple University hospital. Just under 1 dozen derailment victims remain at temple. Six in Critical Condition with more surgeries planned. All are expected to recover. Today one of those victims that died in the crash will be remembered. Funeral services will be held on long island for midship midshipman justin zemser. He was one of eight people who died. The eighth was an Italian National visiting the state in the u. S. We have new information on a shooting in philadelphia. We learned a man shot last night in olney died of his wounds. The victim was sitting on his front steps on Linton Street when someone shot him in the back. So far the police have not made any arrests. Police are still looking for two more suspects. An indooumt unsealed said the group conspired to commit the robberies, home invasions to get drugs, jewelry, money from their victims. The men are accused of pretending to be police officers. In one robbery of a Center City Jewelry store. During one of the robberies one was shot and others were tortured. The defendants forced two residents to strip naked. They then threatened to kill them. They threatened to sodomize them with guns. They struck one in the head with a shotgun and they poured boiling water on him. Prosecutors say if convicted the men will face lengthy jail sentence joos six Philadelphia Police officers in the clear after being acquitted of corruption charges. Yesterday a federal jury found the officers not guilty on all charges. The six were part of a narcotics undercover squad. They got hugs outside of the courthouse in center city. They were accused of planting evidence roughing people up and lying to win convictions. The officers were suspended without pay. At least one of them says hell try and get reinstated. The push to get the minimum wage increased to 15 got a boost from a city Council Member. According to philly. Com Council Member johnson put a plan in place to raise the minimum wage to 15. Advocates say the vote could support the pay increase. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is defending his decision to scale back payments to the pension system. He said the state cant afford to pay the more than 3 billion that was agreed to during the 2011 pension overhaul. Well take you through the time line about what we know about the trains speed leading up to the crash. The speed limit leading up to the curve is posted at 80 miles an hour. That limit slows to 50 before the curve. In the minute or so before the crash the amtrak train sped up to 106 miles an hour. Thats when the engineer slammed on the breaks but obviously it was too late. An amtrak worker filed the first lawsuit prior to the crash. Ruth phillips was in one of the rear cars. The ballad cynwyd law office that represents him says he is seeking damages in excess of 150,000. He says amtrak is to blame regardless of what the investigation reveals. We wanted to try to get this in court as soon as possible so that not only can we get this matter resolved hopefully quickly, but so he can go on with his life as well. The engineer who fell asleep at the controls will not face criminal charges. The metronorth derailment killed four people. We got up there and i see people laying on the ground dead but the people that lived there come out with blankets and put it on them. Ill never forget all the trains were cracked all up together. The train known as the Congressional Limited was on its way from washington to new york that day. It was one of the fastest passenger trains of its time.
