Investigators are still trying to figure out what started a fire in the basement of this highrise apartment building. Nbc 10 was on scene there on bryn mawr avenue in winfield just after 11 00 last night. Firefighters were able to quickly get that fire under control and people were allowed to go back inside about an hour later. A little girl is the victim of a hitandrun, and a witness saw the whole thing happen. The witness tells nbc 10 he heard a boom and saw the car, he says, hit the child, driving away. He chased the green Mitsubishi Outlander and took video that included the license plate. Investigators tell us this is the car theyre looking for. Nbc 10s jesse gary is live outside Childrens Hospital of philadelphia. Jesse, there is a description of the person also, believed to be behind the wheel at the time of the accident. Tell us more about that. Reporter tracy, thats right. Detectives say the driver is a male with dark skin and saltandpepper facial hair, but witnesses werent able to get a picture of his face, just the back of the car with his license plate. Take a look at the video. We have a picture of the victim from this alleged hitandrun. This is 7yearold allure mclaine, whom witnesses say was struck as she crossed north 42nd street late last night. They tell nbc 10 the impact happened after the wanted driver swerved around a car that stopped for the girls crossing, and then ultimately hit the child. Im told that family members are inside the hospital with the 7yearold right now. Im going to call the hospital and get an update on her condition. Ill have that coming up at the bottom of the hour. Happening today, a trial is scheduled to begin for a north town man accused of running over a Police Officers foot and dragging him from his vehicle during a traffic stop. Christopher stegall is facing a long list of charges from the incident in olney that happened about two years ago. Philadelphia police say stegall refused to get out of his vehicle during a traffic stop, sped off and dragged an officer about a block. The officer had a fractured ankle. Stegall later turned himself in. Its three minutes after 5 00. Today, former philadelphia sportscaster don tollison is heading to trial, accused of stealing more than 100,000 through an alleged charity scam. Nbc 10s vai sikahema is live in our Digital Operations Center this morning with details on the case against tollison. Vai . Yeah, chris, according to investigators, tollison duped people into buying tickets to sporting events and then keeping the cash himself. According to the authorities, the investigators, tollison told those people that the money would go to charity, but they say tollison kept the cash himself and the buyers did not get the packages that they actually paid for. And police say this happened over the course of a threeyear period. Some of those charities connected with the scam include the special olympics, also the salvation army. Another was the brad fox foundation, named for a Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty. The investigation shows that there are more than 100 victims in this case. There are still no suspects this morning in the murder of a philadelphia woman who was shot while walking her dog. It happened saturday night along morse street in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city. 42yearold Kathryn Berry was shot twice at point blank range. Her family says they have no idea why someone would target the Home Health Aid and mother of four. So much violence in philadelphia and no gun control. I mean, people have no sense of no heart anymore. They just kill like randomly like its just a thing to do. And Police Believe berry was the intended target. Investigators are trying to figure out why someone wanted her dead. Cutting crime. The u. S. Justice department has picked two crimeridden cities from our area for a Pilot Program aimed at making the streets safer. Wilmington and camden are among five cities being targeted today. Nbc 10s matt delucia is live in wilmington to tell us about this new program. Matt . Reporter yeah, tracy, Wilmington Police say they know crime is a problem here, a problem they want to fix. And theyre hoping this Violence Reduction network will help. So, what is the Violence Reduction network that were talking about . Its a summit that will take place in washington, and it will happen over the next three days. Now, cities selected to take part in this program are going to be offered resources from the department of justice to help with crimefighting. Members of the Wilmington Police department and staff from the Mayors Office are going to head to washington today. And ive been looking up crime numbers for wilmington in the past hour. Last year there were 154 shootings and 15 gun deaths. As a whole, delaware last year was placed at number six on the fbis ten most dangerous states. Wed like to get off that list, and whatever help we can get, were going to take and were going to look for that as an opportunity to make wilmington a safer, better place for everyone to live. Reporter and weve been talking about wilmington, but camden, new jersey, as we mentioned, is also a part of this program. We talked with the police chief there about what theyve been doing to cut crime and how theyre hoping this federal program will help. Well have that coming up in the next hour. An investigation is under way to find out what started a house fire that killed the president of Cooper University Health System and his wife over the weekend. The bodies of john and Joyce Sheridan were found in an upstairs bedroom of their home. Prosecutors say the circumstances surrounding the fire are still being investigated. Now, that fire started around 6 15 a. M. On sunday inside the sheridans home in montgomery township, somerset county, new jersey. Investigators say John Sheridan died at the scene. His wife was rushed to a hospital where she died a short time later. Police say the next step in the investigation will be to perform autopsies on the couple to figure out exactly what caused their deaths. Now, governor Chris Christie released this statement to nbc 10 on the deaths of john and Joyce Sheridan. He said john was an outstanding public servant, a leader in the health care industry, a true new jersey treasure. Joyce was an outstanding teacher, wife and mother. In a statement to nbc 10, coopers chairman of the board of trustees, george norcross, said it is hard to overstate how great a loss johns death is to his family, friends, coworkers and cooper. There is no one else who has had as big an impact on me as john did, except my father. It is 5 07. The search for the suspect in the murder of a Pennsylvania State trooper has now shifted. A state Police Spokesperson says the focus of the search has moved slightly to the southeast. They would not say why. Eric frein is charged with ambushing two state troopers, as you know, outside the barracks in Blooming Grove on september 12th, killing one officer and wounding another. Authorities believe they do have him contained within a 5squaremile perimeter around his parents home in monroe county, but the area could be booby trapped. You can count on nbc 10 and nbc10. Were watching some clouds come into the area this morning. No sign of any rain, however. No wind either. Its a quiet start, but clouds will be in during the daytime today with some breaks of sunshine, enough to warm things back into the low 80s this afternoon. There is a threat of showers, but not for today. That comes later tomorrow. And it doesnt look like its going to be very impressive. 50s and 60s to start with right now. Wilmington, youre at 62 degrees. Look at swedesboro at 60 along with mullica hill and youll find low 60s for sicklerville, turnersville and clayton this morning. You will find clouds that are already overhead will prevent those temperatures from going much lower than they are right now. You can see some thin spots in the clouds. It is not going to be total cloud cover, but its going to be close. Look at all of the clouds that are streaming to our south. Thats where youll find the rain today. For us, we will stay dry with some breaks in the cloud cover. At 10 00, 70 degrees in philadelphia. Mostly cloudy in allentown and reading at 10 00 a. M. , 68 degrees. By noontime, well be in the upper 70s. But as those clouds fill back in, that will prevent the temperatures from going much warmer during the afternoon. 80 degrees later today, while yesterday we saw 86 degrees during the afternoon. Thats 3 00 in the afternoon. Allentown, reading, pottstown will also be warm with temperatures at that hour in the upper 70s, while its in the 60s in Atlantic City. Starting off in philadelphia, our first activity of the morning. Theres Police Activity on route 1 northbound on the off ramp that takes you on to broad street. You can see theres at least one Police Vehicle here. Im told theres a disabled vehicle in this area. This to me looks like another Police Vehicle. So, im still trying to ascertain if there is, in fact, a disabled vehicle. But still, nonetheless, there is some Police Activity on that ruoff ramp from route 1 northbound on to broad street. And you can see theres some traffic having to go around that. The taconypalmyra bridge for the second time in a little over an hour, it has raised. You can see one arm is up right now for a ship to pass through. That affects things on route 73 for traffic going in and out of philadelphia or rather, pennsylvania and new jersey. In delaware, this is in stanton on Stanton Christiana road at Delaware Park boulevard, there is a pole thats down, so its blocking the right lane. Heading into new jersey now and really free and clear of any problems throughout new jersey. This is a live look at route 70 right at kings highway, where you can see there are no issues to report in that intersection. Happening today, leaders are expected to announce details of a restoration project for the battleship new jersey. A live look at it from camden. The project is called firepower for freedom. Union workers will repaint the entire ship. They say its an effort to show support for veterans and the city of camden. Also happening today, were expecting a big announcement thats said to strengthen the partnership between two colleges in south jersey. Camden county college and Rutgers University camden are calling the new agreement groundbreaking and its built for all students in and outside Camden County. Todays announcement will take place at Camden County colleges gloucester township campus at 1 30. We will, of course, let you know what comes out of that. No battling back for the birds. Despite a close score at the end, the eagles couldnt come back. The disappointing plays that have fans frustrated this morning. And the faa is promising smoother travel today after thousands of canceled flights this weekend. The improvements being made right now to prevent any further delays. Hell have details on that in a moment. A Court Hearing is scheduled today for a former philadelphia Police Officer accused of kidnapping and rape. Richard decoatsworth is accused of forcing two women at gunpoint to take drugs and perform sex acts. Earlier this year, he pleaded guilty to some of the charges against him, but then withdrew his plea. It was back in 2007, decoatsworth was celebrated as a hero after being shot in the face during the capture of a suspect. Police in ferguson, missouri, say the shooting of an officer over the weekend is not related to the unrest over the death of michael brown. It happened saturday night as the officer tried to question a man about a burglary. He took off and fired shots at the officer, hitting him in the arm. This Morning Police are still looking for that guy. It is the latest episode in the city where tension remains high between police and the public. What we really feared is that somebody on either side would do something that would provoke the other, and we would have another awful scene. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed. Now, a short time after that shooting and just a few miles away, an offduty officer came under fire. He wasnt injured and there is no evidence it was related to the ferguson protests. Meantime, police in miami say there are still a lot of questions surrounding a nightclub shooting that injured 15 people, including an 11yearold girl. Officers say they found chaos when they responded to the club early yesterday morning, and its still not clear just how many shooters there were are what led to the gunfire. Investigators are also trying to figure out what kind of club it was, since several of the victims are 17 years old or younger. 16 minutes after 5 00 now. A candlelight vigil was held yesterday at North Central Texas College for the victims of this weekends fatal bus crash. The president of that college, North Central texas, says this is the most traumatic event the campus has ever faced. Four members of the schools Softball Team were killed when a tractortrailer crossed the center line and hit the team van late friday night in oklahoma. Sources tell nbc news that the truck driver told authorities he was reaching for a drink on the passenger side of his cab when he drifted into the median. Charges are expected to be filed today against the man whos accused of beheading a coworker at a Food Processing plant in oklahoma. Police say alton nolen will face murder and other charges. Investigators say he attacked two women with a knife, beheading one of them shortly after he was fired on friday. The chief operating officer at the plant actually shot nolen to stop his rampage. Nolen is expected to recover. Jury selection will begin this morning in the trial for a friend of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. Robel phillipos, seen here, is one of Three Friends of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev charged in connection with the bombing. He is accused of lying to investigators. Hes pleaded not guilty. Tsarnaevs other two knrendz already been convicted for impeding the investigation. Last week, meantime, a judge granted a twomonth trial delay for bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev but denied a defense request to have the trial moved out of boston. The bombings of 2013 Boston Marathon killed 3 people and injured more than 260 others. Tsarnaevs brother, also accused in the attack, was killed in a Police Shootout days after the bombings. The faa says it will take until midoctober to get the firedamaged air Traffic Control center in suburban chicago running at full capacity again. Officials do expect improvements in air travel today after thousands of flights were canceled starting friday. Technicians are now replacing the entire Computer Network at that facility. Authorities say a contract employee started the fire. They still arent saying exactly why, but thousands of people were stranded over the weekend. A tough weekend for travel. The taconypalmyra bridge, as you can see, this arm is just getting back to normal. About five minutes ago i saw a ship passing through. That, of course, affected traffic on route 73 in new jersey and in pennsylvania. But right now, the arms seem to have gone back down. Thats the second ship to have passed through in the last hour. So, well let you know if it happens for a third time. Looking at your average speeds on the 42 freeway, northbound right at the merge for 55, as you head to the area bridges. Weve got some clouds that have moved in overhead. 65 degrees right now in philadelphia with just a light breeze out of the westsouthwest at 6 miles an hour. Clouds will be here for most of the day with some breaks of sunshine. What were seeing less of this morning is fog. Not an issue for allentown and quakertown or wilmington or philadelphia. But parts of new jersey seeing some very light fog in the mt. Holly area. We just saw some big improvement. It was down to a quartermile visibility for millville and Atlantic City boasts seeing improvement there. So, the fog wont be a big issue this morning. Neither will showers. You can see wet weather to our south. Its part of the same system thats producing a few very light showers in central pennsylvania. Those will not make it into our area today. However, the clouds will. And theyre already here, and thats going to keep temperatures running a little lower today. Instead of the 86 degrees we had yesterday, unusually warm, well be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees this afternoon. Winds out of the west to 8 miles an hour. Come tomorrow, a little bit cooler with some breaks in the clouds. Well see some sunshine and a chance of a lateday shower. On friday, the dow rose 167 points to 17,113, and the nasdaq adding 45 to 4,512. And banks are reaping bigger fees when customers overdraw their Checking Accounts or use an atm thats not affiliated with their lender. Bankrate. Com says the average rate for using an outofnetwork atm rose 5 over the past year to 4. 35 per transaction, and Overdraft Fees hit an average of nearly 33 in the past year, the 16th Straight Record high.
