here's what we can expect. we are going to see mild conditions settling in, about ten degrees above average. evening showers a possibility for us, then an arctic blast drops our temperatures more than 20 degrees by tomorrow. 53 degrees. a mild start to the morning in philadelphia. wind speeds out of the southwest at 11 miles per hour. there is a big difference between the temperatures in philadelphia versus what's happening in the suburbs. take a look at pottstown, only 39 degrees. temperatures in allentown at 36. those are the two exceptions. even the poconos at 47 degrees. temperatures today push close to 60, even the mid-60s in a few spots. i'll show you all the details coming up in my first alert seven-day forecast. but for now, we check in with first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. good morning. >> good morning to you, brittney and to you at home. looking live at 309 near the pennsylvania turnpike, very few cars on the road, which is good, because there are no issues to report on any of our majors in pennsylvania, new jersey or delaware. so, that's a good thing this morning. we are following an accident in whitemarsh township. this is on ridge pike between church road and manor road. that portion of the road is closed, so be advised. you can take germantown pike around that accident. and also, there's a fire in the germantown section of philadelphia. this is on coulter street between germantown avenue and lena street. an alternate around that is church lane. and finally, for drivers in new jersey, again, no issues on any of the majors. a live look in cherry hill at route 70 at kings highway. there are a few headlights out there. no issues to report, but a pretty good commute, if that's part of it. new overnight in delaware county, police are looking for suspects after someone fired shots at officers. it happened in chester township along west 12th and nate ellis drive. investigators say the shots came from a nearby foot bridge. no officers were hit. so far, police have not made any arrests. 4:32. the fbi has joined the search for missing west chester university student shane montgomery. he was last seen leaving a bar in manayunk early thanksgiving morning. nbc 10 was there along the manayunk canal as members of the police marine unit searched every inch of that murky water, hoping to find clues. police tell us they're hopeful they will find shane montgomery alive. the 21-year-old was bar hopping with friends wednesday night into early thursday morning. he was last seen leaving ki kildare's on main street. >> it amazes me that shane was out on one of the busiest nights, party nights, for kids that are 21 and over, and nobody saw anything. >> a $15,000 reward is being offered for information leading to shane's whereabouts. the man accused of murdering an off-duty philadelphia police officer is set to go to trial today. rafael jones is one of two suspects in the murder of officer moses walker. he's accused of firing the shot that killed the officer. police say walker was killed while walking home from work in the early hours of august in 2012. this is surveillance video from when it happened in north philadelphia. police say jones violated his parole and should have been in jail at the time of the murder. the other suspect in the case, chancier mcfarland, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in june. authorities say mcfarland has agreed to testify against jones. this morning we have new information in the case of a tortured and murdered 3-year-old chester county boy. the school district says school officials followed all protocols and procedures leading up to the boy's death. some people argued scotty mcmillan's death could have been prevented. the coatesville area school district came under fire after scotty's 6-year-old brother missed ten straight days of school, which many claimed was a red flag for child abuse. the district conducted an internal investigation and found no wrongdoing. jillian tait and her boyfriend are facing murder charges. freedom of speech will take center stage in our nation's capitol today as the united states supreme court hears a bethlehem man's case. anthony alonis was convicted of making threats on facebook, but he says he was just kidding when he posted a series of graphically violent rap lyrics on the social networking website. the lyrics talked about killing his estranged wife, shooting up a kindergarten class and attacking an fbi agent. in this case, the supreme court justices will consider whether online speech should be protected under the first amendment. president obama will hold a series of meetings today to discuss the situation in ferguson, missouri. the president will focus on his administration's review of federal programs that provide military-style equipment to police. he'll also meet with young civil rights leaders and local law enforcement in an effort to find ways to bridge the racial divide. well, cyber monday means lots of deals, but also steals, literally. >> ahead, what you should look for on your bank statement if you're shopping online this season. plus, crib concerns. the bedtime mistake experts say too many parents are making. plus, giving a new purpose to all those old campaign signs. what you can do with them to be a part of a new movement in our area. 4:38 a.m. new this morning, a camden county family is asking, have you seen our peanuts characters? they put out this sign saying their kids are heartbroken after some of their holiday decorations were swiped from the front lawn of their gloucester township home. the family says the hand-painted, wooden cutouts of peppermint patti, marcie and pig pen went missing between saturday night and sunday morning. burlington county residents are faced with a challenge. they're being asked to transform leftover campaign signs on their lawns into works of art. it's called the good challenge. it kicks off tomorrow. the project is designed as a charitable take on black friday and cyber monday. participants are encouraged to post pictures on social media and challenge others to perform acts of kindness. southwest at 11 miles per hour. and as we head into the rest of this morning, we do expect to see conditions warming into the 60s. so, that's going to be a nice change once again on this first day of december. 47 degrees in the poconos, 36 in allentown, 36 degrees in quakertown and it's only 39 in pottstown. this is the only area of cold air. everywhere else we're checking out mild conditions. 48 in bluebell, 51 in washington township, 55 in northeast philly, 51 degrees in wrightstown. if you're waking up with us in avalon, we're in the low 50s. 51 degrees in dover. and you can see what a difference a day makes. this time yesterday, temperatures were about 17 degrees cooler in the poconos, so we're up 17 degrees, up 10 degrees in philadelphia and up 10 degrees as well in dover. cloudy skies expected for us today with a possibility of a few isolated showers moving in from the west, riding along a cold front. and so, what we'll see as we head into the rest of today, mostly cloudy skies, a mild day, isolated showers expected closer to 3:00 p.m. as we head into the evening, same thing, on and off, very spotty, light showers. and then we start to see a little bit more moisture moving in, first south jersey along the i-95 corridor. so, you could see a dusting of a wintry mix as we head into tomorrow, right around 9:00 a.m. we're not expecting a whole lot of accumulation. then we'll slowly start to see the rain-snow line, that wintry mix continue to shift into parts of the suburbs, heading into the poconos. so, it's going to be a wet tuesday night for you. after that, we'll see cold air settling in on your tuesday, recovering pushing into wednesday. today our temperatures will range between 58 and 61 degrees. i'll have your seven-day forecast, coming up. just before 4:41 a.m., and a lot of people are going to be heading back to work and school today after the long holiday weekend. >> back to work. we can get you to work. katy zachry's watching all the that. a live look at 476 right at the 95 interchange. and if you're traveling on 95 between 476 and the delaware line in either direction, it will take you about seven or eight minutes in both directions, so that's great this morning. and finally -- or not finally, but moving into delaware, live look at 95 right at route 896. very few cars on the road. no issues to report on any of our breaking news in the germantown section of philadelphia. crews on the scene of a house fire there. let's go right to nbc 10's matt delucia in germantown. what's going on? >> reporter: christine, there's a lot of police and fire activity on coulter street by germantown avenue. you can see what's going on. a fire trouuck out there and police tape blocking the intersection. we're told this was an attempted fire-bombing here at a home and people were trapped inside initially, but everyone was rescued by the fire department. we have seen some people gathering on the side of the street here, but not a whole lot of damage to the front of this building, just at the front door. it's behind this fire truck, so you can't really see it, but that's pretty much the extent of the damage at this point. i'm going to try to get more information, but that's the latest right now live in germ germanto germantown. matt delucia, nbc 10 news. 4:45 a.m. first it was black friday, then small business saturday, now it's cyber monday. >> retailers are hoping to make up for a slow start to the holiday shopping season. as nbc 10 national correspondent tracie potts explains, more than half of americans are expected to shop online today. ♪ ♪ the most wonderful time of the year ♪ >> reporter: 'tis the season where retailers are hoping to turn red into black. >> some things that i found were even under $10. >> reporter: but if this weekend is any indication, they may need a christmas miracle. just take a look at the weekend numbers. the national retail federation reports 7 million people stayed home compared to last year. those who shopped spent less, $26 per person. that's expected to leave retailers $7 billion short. >> it's not over until it's over. consumers can wait and procrastinate almost as long as they want until december 25th, and retails will be there and available for a deal. >> reporter: major retailers are offering cyber monday deals all week. online specials started early in november, which may explain why consumers were in no rush to buy on black friday. >> the game plan is to buy everything that we saw here today online and have it shipped free. >> it's all about the deals. >> reporter: and analysts tell us those deals are just beginning. last year, cyber monday sales shot up 16%. we'll see what happens this year. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> we will see. and if you're shopping online today, you need to protect your money. >> and experts have some ways you can do that. first off, you should use a separate credit card while shopping online. that way, if hackers get your information, your bank accounts will be safe. also, pay attention to your statements and check for those micro charges. hackers hope you won't notice one or two dollars missing from your account. well, after black friday, small business saturday, cyber monday today, there's a growing movement to give back this holiday season. it's called giving tuesday. and in philadelphia, several charities, businesses and volunteers will participate. an e-mail campaign is being created to boost online giving. use #givingtuesdayphl. and the irs has some tips for you if you plan to make a donation this holiday season. first, make sure you're giving to an eligible charity. it has to be an approved 5013c charity. also, make sure you have documentation of your donation and if you're giving clothing or furniture, get a receipt to claim it on your taxes. there's another twist in the penn state child sex abuse scandal. some penn state trustees want to review documents used to investigate complaints against jerry sandusky. those documents were used to create the 2012 report issued by former fbi director louis freeh. several trustees are asking their chairmen to chair the information. they want to verify sources that accuse school leaders of hiding complaints. sandusky was abusing children. the former assistant football coach is now serving a 30 to 60-year prison sentence. 12 minutes before 5:00 now. ohio state university remembers one of its football players who was found dead over weekend. students, friends and fellow teammates held a vigil last night for kosta karageorge. police say he died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. he had been missing since wednesday. his mother says on that day, he sent her a text about the concussions he suffered. according to a new study, high school football players may show brain changes without ever suffering a concussion. researchers measured the head impacts for about two dozen players over the course of a season. experts say some of those athletes had changes which are consistent with a brain injury. players who were considered heavy hitters had the highest risk of changes. researchers say it's not yet clear if there could be long-term consequences. sleeping with danger. a new study finds about half of babies sleep with too many blankets and pillows. experts recommend babies sleep in a crib with no loose bedding to avoid suffocation. researchers found babies of teen moms and those sleeping in adult beds were most likely to sleep with bedding. if you're worried about your child being cold, experts say purchase safe sleepwear. a dog is being hailed as a hero in georgia after taking a bullet to save its family. surveillance video shows the dog running away after being shot during a road rage attack. witnesses say a man got mad while driving and followed a chevy suburban into a parking lot. then he fired into the vehicle. police say the dog was shot protecting the three children and their mom. >> dog took the bullet for the kids so the kids would be safe. >> the family was terrorized and they survived that only to find their pet is now gone. it's sad for the whole family. >> day on tap for us. and as we push into the rest of the evening, we are going to see a chance of showers. an arctic blast is in store for us, dropping our temperatures about 20 degrees in one day. so, the cold will make its return today. we should have a nice and enjoyable day. a closer look at the i-95 and also for philadelphia, 53 degrees, mostly cloudy skies. our humidity's at 69%, wind speeds out of the southwest at 11 miles per hour. throughout the rest of the region, take a look at the poconos in the 40s this morning. 36 degrees in allentown, 51 in west chester, low 50s in wilmington. we're at 52 degrees in stone harbor, 52 in atlantic city. and a closer look at all the clouds that are going to continue to push in. mostly cloudy skies expected for us on this monday, and we also are keeping track of all these showers that are slowly going to make their way into our area as we head into the rest of the afternoon. so, we're in the clear in the morning, but by 3:00, 4:00, you'll notice isolated showers. this isn't a lot of heavy rainfall. this is spotty, isolated showers, which will continue as we head into the rest of the afternoon. as the moisture continues to fill in throughout our region, especially in south jersey right along the i-95 corridor, by tomorrow, with cooler air coming in, we could see the possibility of a bit of a wintry mix. we're not expecting any type of accumulation here, except for in the poconos. in allentown, closer to 7:00 p.m., we're still dealing with a bit of a wintry mix. and also, as temperatures warm above freezing, we expect mainly rainfall by 7:00 p.m. on tuesday. by 11:00 p.m., again, dealing with more rainfall. things clear up as we head into wednesday, but all that cold air's going to settle in over us. and as we approach 2:00 a.m. into your tuesday and 11:00 a.m. closer to your tuesday morning, our feels-like temperatures by tomorrow morning, closer to 26 degrees here. closer to 27 in allentown and 20 degrees in the poconos. so, a big drop in our temperatures is on the way. as we head into the rest of today, we do expect temperatures to head closer to the 60s for philadelphia, close to the low 50s for allentown. home, but this morning in california, a stretch of the pacific coast highway is closed following three separate mudslides. heavy rain in malibu is to blame, and more wet weather is on the way. the brunt of the storm isn't expected to hit that area until tomorrow. well, the girl scouts are trading in tradition for a little bit of technology. next, the new way you'll soon be able to get that cookie fix. and the toys on your children's holiday wish list that are most likely to end play time with an injury. five minutes before 5:00. thousands of hunters will head into the pennsylvania woods this week. deer season begins this morning and will run for two weeks. the pennsylvania game commission expects 750,000 hunters to participate opening day. more than 300,000 deer could be taken over the season. and starting today, pennsylvania fishing licenses will be cheaper. fees have been reduced through december. you can save $3 on a three-year license, $5 on a five-year license. this is the first time the pennsylvania fish and boat commission has reduced the price of a license. well, this week, officials in delaware will hold the first in a series of meetings to talk about the possibility of raising the prices at state parks. some of the proposals include increasing the fees for vehicles at both inland and ocean parks. also, higher prices would affect both state residents and out-of-state visitors. first meeting will be held tomorrow. officials say park fees in delaware have not changed in ten years. a new report says it could take two years before the redevelopment of the granite run mall site is complete. "the delco times" reports it will happen in two phases. first, crews will tear down part of the mall and building a luxury apartment building. phase two includes the building of the second apartment and other retail buildings. a proposed bill in new jersey aims to stop junk mail, but some argue it would cost the state tens of thousands of jobs. the proposal would let people get on a do-not-mail list, similar to the do-not-call list that blocks telemarketers. direct mailers, printers and graphic artists are lobbying against the bill. they say it would hurt the state's economy. the girl scouts go digital with their cookie sales. officials will now allow the scouts to use a mobile app or personalized website to sell the snacks. the organization says online sales will be a valuable tool for the young entrepreneurs. the scouts say they will be able to send the cookies sold online directly to your doorstep. although i do like when you hear the doorbell and you see the girl scouts. >> i know. but it's just one more way to get those cookies. >> that's true. today parents can learn more about some of the most dangerous toys out there this holiday season. >> officials in cherry hill, new jersey, will hold a briefing on the annual trouble in toyland report this morning. the number of kids getting hurt playing with toys has risen 40% since 1990. experts say a child is treated every three minutes for a toy-related injury in the u.s. as kids get older and more active, the ride-on toys account for a significant number of injuries, especially scooters. >> they were introduced in year 2000. there was a rapid increase in the number of injuries. in fact, i will say that i've never seen anything like it in my career. >> experts say kids with bikes, trikes and scooters should always wear a helmet and be under the watchful eye of an adult. you're watching nbc 10 news.
