You have the support of your family, your four children you live down the shore, Hurricane Sandy hits about 2 1 2 years ago. And tell us what happened. We live in spring lake new jersey, about five blocks off the ocean, and about two weeks after the hurricane came through, i developed a cough, and it lingered and one thing turned into another that i finally got it looked at and came down here to the university of Pennsylvania Hospital system got it looked at and ended up with a virus or a mole that got into my lungs that just continued to develop. And without the necessary drug therapies and chemotherapy, didnt work and now im on an active list for as a donor or i should say to be receive a Lung Transplant from a donor. Now, and to be sure you were a smoker but you quit some ten a decade ago. This is not related at all. Doctors determined this is not related to smoking. It is a form of hypersensitivity, and it is a chronic disease that unfortunately the drug therapies just didnt work this time. So im left with having to receive a transplant. What is the what is your life like now . It is i have a great support system family friends, Everything Else is great. But im on oxygen 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Im on disability. So it is a struggle but i know that the care that im receiving, ill get it resolved and ill go back and have a normal life. John, tell me what the toll is like on the entire family and extended family. The extended family the whole family is praying very hard for tom and toms recovery doing things like the fight for air climb, to help raise money and awareness. Helps a great deal wherever we can help tom personally you know, with the family and all, were all pitching in to help. Do you have a wife and four children by the way, your wife is johns sister so thats a connection right . Yes. How are your chirp feelldren feeling about this . How do they grapple with this with their father . I have four kids two of which are spread out to four winds now, theyre older. But two teenage children and theyre great. They are. They understand. And i think we have all got a pretty positive atmosphere about all of this and how it is going to be fixed. Did you know any of you have any connection know anybody, you know personally with lung cancer before you contracted this . I had i really hadnt gone through this process and been an eye opening experience getting involved with the American Lung association has been a huge help to us. John has been involved in it but the work that they do 35 million americans are affected by lung disease. The outreach that the American LungAssociation Provides of not only awareness, but all the funding that they collect provides to research and development has been huge. And also because of the hospitals that are in the area some of the best in the world.
