river-like it was when you looked at it from overhead. philadelphia's water department says they started getting cams at about 8:30 this morning about a massive amount of water flowing down germantown avenue toward jefferson. they did have to evacuate a day care as a precaution. we were told no injuries there, and they do not believe they had any water in the basement. that's a key element that the water department is looking at is how many homes along here were affected, had water damage at all. in this particular case, the water department says this was work that had been ongoing for in time. residents were not expecting to wake up to this today. >> it come fast. i couldn't cross the street. couldn't even cross the street. all on the sidewalk, the water, dirt, everything. >> reporter: neighbors said that the work here at germantown had been going on since the summertime. several residents complaining about flat tires. it was a subcontractor that may have been working on it. they would ask questions of the subcontractor, what were they doing and were never given an answer. when we asked the water department's spokesperson, he is chebing ing t checking to see the nature of the work. was it work on the main or some that came off of there. they have claims adjustors going throughout neighborhood to make sure if folks did have damage that they file claims with the water man's body just after 7:00 this morning. he was shot in the head and died on the scene. we will follow this story and bring you any updates beginning at 4:00. right now at 11:00, gusty winds out there camelback resort in the poconos. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with the forecast. i guess the skiers like this. >> yeah. they are getting snow. they will get more snow and the cold air so that they can make snow as we head toward the weekend. the center of the nor'easter is still up near boston. it's not that far away. and we have strong winds around it out of the northwest keeping things on the chilly side for the day today and actually for the rest of the week. live radar showing some snow up to the north. some of this is coming into the poconos now. eventually -- this is a large area. continuing to move around that nor'easter is something we will have to watch, even beyond the poconos where there's a winter weather advisory. a few more inches of snow possible there. the temperatures are way above freezing in most areas. didn't drop overnight. the wind making it feel colder. so even if snow does start to come down into the lehigh valley, berks county, some of the other northern suburbs, it would generally melt on the roads and only accumulate on grassy surfaces. the temperature may actually be going down a little bit as we go through the afternoon. very windy day. snow in the poconos at noon. we may see it get south of the poconos as we head through the afternoon. we will see when we will warm up finally with the rest of the seven-day forecast in just a few minutes. right now federal investigators are at the scene of a fire that killed a philadelphia firefighter. they are trying to figure out what happened. nbc 10's jesse gary is live at the scene. tell us what's happening right now. >> reporter: around mid morning local and federal investigators, including one atf agent arrived here. they are down the back alley to the fire scene. most of their activity so far centered on the back of the row house on middleton street. yesterday 36-year-old joyce craig-lewis and other firefighters rushed inside. she was found a short time later unconscious and rushed to einstein medical center where she was pronounced dead. the fire commissioner told me her death comes the dayance ann department. they are trying to determine why other firefighters withdrew without noticing she wasn't with them. she is the mother of a teenage son. she also has a daughter who is a toddler. >> everybody will come together and do what they have to do to support the children. that's what we're worried about right now, the children. that's what's important. >> reporter: back here live. we checked in on the family a little while ago. a philadelphia police officer stationed outside the house said it has been quiet and no one has come or gone or come to the door. joyce craig-lewis the first female firefighter to die in the line of duty in this city. jesse gary, searching for two men wanted for an armed robbery in northeast philadelphia early this morning. it happened on larch street this morning. two victims were robbed of nearly $7,000 and passports. the grieves got away with nearly seven grand in investigating a home invasion. this happened around 11:30 last night. no one was hurt. it's not clear what was taken. police are also looking for two men they say are responsible for a home invasion in south philadelphia. police tell us masked men armed with guns forced their way inside a home last night. investigators say the robbers hit a man in the head, trashed the home and got away with $600 and jewelry. the victim was not seriously hurt. this morning, bensalem police are working to track down thieves who stole thousands of dollars worth of antique coins. it happened yesterday at the coin and collectible store on street road. surveillance cameras captured a man trying to -- tieing up the owner. the other man tied up an employee and a customer. the thieves broke the glass in the display cases, pulled out antique silver dollars and took 100 coins worth about $5,000. we spoke with the owner who asked us not to show his face. >> thought for a second this is somebody playing a game on me. as he pushed me down, i realized, this is not a game. >> cameras captured one of the thieves pushing off his hoodie. you can clearly see his face on camera. investigators believe the man ran to the back of the shopping plaza with they may have hopped into a waiting car. none of the victims were seriously injured. this more than, the reward is up to $65,000 in the search for missing college student shane montgomery. it's now been 14 days since monlt g montgomery disappeared. he was seen early thanksgiving morning at a bar. we have learned a road shut down by a mudslide has reopened. police closed off the road between portland road and route 23. that spot saw flooding over the summer. once again that road has just reopened. the president of penn state is coming under fire for a gesture that he made outside the school's administration building. this is a twitter picture of the president. he joined students at a die in demonstration to protest the shooting in ferguson, missouri. one state lawmaker is demanding he apologize, calling it a slap in the face to law enforcement. he says he supports the police but also wanted to show solidarity with the students. now to the casino crisis in atlantic city. the deal to sell revel is now dead. a source close to the negotiations told nbc 10 revel did everything it could to close the deal. the casino wants to set up a court hearing to accept a bid by a florida develop egg wer inter in the hotel. new jersey could go small with the next generation of casinos. they will debate a bill that will let them build boutique-style hotels. they would allow casinos to be placed in existing buildings. happening now, the philadelphia school reform commission is continuing hearings on new charter school applications. during this first round, applicants can make a proposal and the public can comment. a second round is in january. the clock is ticking for philadelphia public school students to turn in their school collection applications. friday is the deadline for students who want to transfer schools or start high school next fall. students can apply to attend family of 12-year-old rice is suing the city and two police officers for wrongful death. he was shot outside a recreation center last month. they believed he was armed with a handgun. it was a be.b. gun. rick snyder and city officials are announcing detroit is emerging from bankruptcy. this is a live look at the news conference. they implemented the two-year budget which eliminates debt. they will no longer be in financial emergency and the mayor says the city is back in business. we have those cold winds howling throughout the area making it feel a lot colder han it really is. the temperature, believe is or not is above 40 but doesn't feel it. we have snow in the poconos. we have had some overnight. we have more coming during the day today. and enough to accumulate and maybe cause some driving issues up there and snow showers generally north and west of philadelphia later today and possibly tonight as well. the flags are blowing out there. we have seen some strong wind gusts. 17 gusting to 30 miles an hour right now. the temperature has been holding at 42. virtually all night and all morning. feels like it's 34 degrees right now. it's well above freezing. everywhere except for the pocon poconos. even if we get snow showers there, it's likely to just melt on the roads and accumulate a little on grassy surfaces. we're into the mid 40s in southern sections. but everybody has got the gusty wind out of the northwest, gusting to 35 miles an hour in allentown. 38 in northeast philly. 36 in wilmington. it's going to be a windy afternoon. the windchill is in the 20s in reading and allentown right now. teens in the poconos. lots of clouds out there and we're going to keep it pretty cloudy all day, all night, even into tomorrow. not a lot of sunshine around that big slow moving nor'easter. it's covering hundreds and hundreds of miles. not much on the radar, at least close to philadelphia. the area i'm watching is coming down from new york state into northeastern pennsylvania. you can see the movement. it's around that big nor'easter. the atmospheric conditions are favorable for this holding together, at least for several hours, certainly coming through the poconos and that's why there's a winter weather advisory there. there may be several inches of snow falling in that area later today, tonight and into tomorrow. the futurecast showing all the clouds and some snow showers at times coming especially in the northern sections. once in a while we get something coming even down through the philadelphia area. it's something we're going to have to be watching through the afternoon and tonight. once again, the temperature is above freezing -- well above freezing but holding steady or maybe dropping a little this afternoon. windy and cold with a snow shower north and west and winds gusting to 35 miles an hour. cold and breezy tomorrow with a chance of some snow flurries or a couple snow showers. the cold weather lasts even the weekend. poconos. nbc 10's first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. >> it's very windy out there. we have gusts over 30 miles an ho hour, and some places will see snow showers. sprinkles around on the live radar. but up in northeastern pennsylvania, northern new jersey, coming down in the direction toward the poconos, lehigh valley and those areas should be getting some snow. the poconos may get significant snow throughout the day and night. that's why there's a winter weather advisory for today and tonight. the temperature is well above freezing, even in the areas that might see snow showers. it's likely to melt on the roads. the windchills are in the 20s in some areas, even though the temperature doesn't even look that high. the northwest wind, pretty strong. gusting to 38 miles an hour in northeast philly now and 20 to 30 miles an hour in many other parts of the area. so that wind is going to continue all afternoon keeping the windchills down and the temperature itself may be dropping at least a couple of degrees as with go through the afternoon. the snow in the poconos, spre spreading farther south as we go through the afternoon with the snow showers. again, the temperature generally above freezing. more on when we're going actually warm up and the wind die down with the seven-day. the nor'easter is causing snow from pennsylvania to maine with more than a foot in some areas. here is an update on the storm. >> reporter: here in tannersvil tannersville, new york, the snow has been coming down since yesterday. this was a major nor'easter for the east coast. most areas dealt with rain and a lot of it. we saw three inches of rain in most areas up and down the east coast. we had flooding along the coast because of the huge waves that this storm churned up. in massachusetts, we had wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour. that combined with the rough surf caused coastal flooding. we started off withize i izce. the roads were slippery, where lots of spinouts and a deadly accident in new york was cause by the icy roads. now we are on the back side of the storm. it's snow now. we are higher in elevation here near hunter mountain. it has been snowing through the night. we have a foot of snow on the ground and more snow is likely as this slow moving nor'easter continues to slowly exit the northeast. new york state and new england will deal with most of the snow from here on out. people in reno, nevada, are bracing for possibly the largest winter storm to hit that area in 30 years. winds are expected to pick up today and increase today, some gusts could reach 90 miles per hour. snow could fall in higher elevations at a rate of two to four inches per hour. forecasters say there's a threat of power outages. the ntsb says there's no evidence of engine problems or a bird strike in the crash in maryland. it crashed into a home, three passengers on board the plane were killed along with a mother and her two young sons. they were in the house at the time of the crash. she's from ocean county. a fire at an assisted living apartment complex in dallas killed two people there. the fire started on the fourth floor of the facility early this morning. it rose to five alarms because of nearly 300 residents who lived in the building and many needed help escaping the fire. officials say two bodies were found in what investigators think is the apartment where the fire started. three other people were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation and are expected to be okay. in new york city, authorities are stepping up security at a jewish organization's headquarters after a man attacked a student yesterday. he stabbed a man in the head early tuesday morning. he is in stable condition. the man was shot and killed by police. he lunged at an officer with a knife. he had a documented history of mental illness. the center of civil rights protests in california shifts to oakland today. organizers expect hundreds to come out and shut down a federal building in oakland. last night demonstrators marched through the downtown streets of berkeley and blocked traffic and d delayed metro and train services. the protests are over grand jury decisions not to criminally charge police officers in the deaths of unarmed african-american men. new information in the case of this florida woman accused of driving her minivan into the ocean with her three children inside. prosecutors have agreed to drop attempted murder charges against her. rescuers pulled the children, ages 3, 9 and 10 from the vehicle last march. she will plead not guilty by reason of insanity to child abuse charges. look at this video from reno, nevada. firefighters rescued a woman from a burning house. they spotted her unwilling or unable to jump to the safety net below her. the cell phone video shows the firefighters climbing a ladder and pulling the woman to safety. a judge in south africa ruled prosecutors can appeal oscar pistorius' acquittal of murder. he was convicted of culpable homicide. he shot and killed his girlfriend in his home. he said he thought she was an intru intruder. on capitol hill, a deal to keep the federal government running. last night lawmakers agreed on a spending bill that would prevent a government shutdown. it will allow just about all federal agencies to run as usual through next september. both the house and senate are expected to adopt the measure. the goflt wivernment will run o money tonight at midnight. the only agency not covered would be the department of homeland security. funding for that agency will run out on february 27. republicans are expected to use the deadline to force president obama to reverse his executive action on not deporting 4 million undocumented immigrants. the spending bill doesn't allow schools to opt out of healthier lunch standards but does relax one key standard. it would allow schools to be exempted from requirements that grain products be mostly whole grain if they can demonstrate difficulty in finding and affording whole grain pasta and breads. the bill would put off a rule to make lunches less salty which was supposed to go into affect in 2017. happening today in wall, president obama will announce a $1 billion investment in programs for early education. 18 states, including new jersey, will get about $250 million each to create or expand preschool programs. another $500 million will go to states to improve programs for children from birth to 3. bob casey will be at today's white house summit on early education. today first lady michelle obama will do her part in this year's toys for tots campaign. she will travel to southeast washington this afternoon to deliver gifts for the campaign. staff members donated the toys. the nobel peace prize winners were presented with their medals today. they were escorted. they are activists for children's rights. she almost died for her fight for the right of girls to receive an education in pakistan. the royals have left the empire state. prince william and kate, the duchess, wrapped up their visit to new york. they spent hours last night at a gala in honor of the university where they met. it was a star-studded fund-raiser at the metropolitan museum of art. >> it's my pleasure and i tell you all how much it means to us. >> the couple boarded a light-night flight back to london after the gala ended. a fisherman is back on solid ground nearly two weeks after he was lost at sea and eight days after the coast guard called for the coast guard at 7:55 this morning. >> great job by the command center to hear it, recognize it. >> reporter: the co-ordinates placed him 64 miles south of owe with a hugh and three miles from a navy distroyer. in missouri, this man's telephone rang. >> we found your dad. he's alive and well on his boat. for him to be found is awesome. i can't believe it. >> reporter: ron was sailing on thanksgiving day he radios that his vessel was taking on water. a 12,000 square mile search found nothing. it was suspended december 1. >> when the commanding officer for the coast guard told me he was going to call off the search, i said, man, i don't think you should call off the search. i don't think he's gone. >> reporter: the 67-year-old man is an experienced fisherman. he was hungry and thirsty when the navy reached him. >> most masts were broken and he was sailing on an auxiliary sail. >> a lot of joy around the command center to know he is alive and he is going to be okay. >> 12 days, man. he is a champ. he is tough. >> reporter: it appears that toughness saved him. up next, "time" reveals its person of the year. no to antibiotics, that's what more and more doctors seem to be doing. the down side of overprescribing them and when you are sick the sim symptoms that should send you to the doctor right away. cold and windy weather for now. i will let you know when we will see warmer temperatures. just about a quarter of noon. today, born in midair. a baby who could not wait for the flight to land. they had to divert to los angeles yesterday. the airline said the mother went into labor shortly after takeoff. a doctor and an e.r. nurse who were on board helped deliver the baby in front of passengers. >> once she had it, the pilot came over the loudspeaker and said we were turning around and going back to l.a. they asked for scissors to cut the cord. it's not something you expect to see. it looked like a healthy baby. >> mother and baby are doing fine. the passengers were put on another plane and continue d on their way. laughter could be the answer for depression. researchers gave patients nitrous oxide or laughing gas. they found two-thirds of the patients reported an improvement in depression symptoms. the findings can be replicated, laughing gas would be a fast way to treat patients at risk of suicide or those waiting for traditional drugs to take affect. researchers say your brain responds difficultly to resfifi sugar. young adults drank beveraged with glucose with a natural sugar or refined sugar. they tracked brain activity. both groups had increase ed activity in the reward center. it was greater in the fructose group. researchers say the higher food cues could lead to overeating. as cold and flu season settles in, don't be surprised if your doctor refuses to refuse an antibiotic. it's part of a program called choose wisely. the goal is to reduce antibiotic resistance. one doctor says colds and sinus and ear infections are viral. they can last seven to ten days. too often patients call the doctor after just three days to get an antibiotic. >> the doctor under certain circumstances gives in and gives the patient inappropriately the antibiotic. in a day or two they feel better, which would have happened had they not gotten the antibiotic. >> there are two down sides to over prescribing anti buybiotic. bacteria that can be tamed by the drugs are now resistant to them. doctors say one day we will run out of effective treatments and there are symptoms that should send you to the doctor. fever of 101.5 or greater. severe pain or relapsing after you have started to recover. 18% of americans almost one in five don't think they will get oust debt. according to a new report, that's double the percent of people who responded that same way in may of 2013. the report found on average americans expect to be in debt -- to be debt free at the age of 53. 43% said they believe they will remain in dead until they are 61 or older. those 18% said that they think they will owe money when they die. you might uncounter them if you travel by plane over the holiday, annoying passengers. they rank the most annoying on board behavior. topping the list, the rear seat kicker. that type of person was followed by the inattentive parent and the air mattic passenger. that's a change from last year when inattentive parents were the most annoying. "time" named its person of the year. it's a group of people who put their lives on the line to help others. they are the ebola fighters. dr. kent brantly is among them and is featured on one of five different covers. each highlights a different ebola fighter. they chose the group to represent the hundreds of people who ran into the fire to treat victims in west africa and stop the disease from spreading. the issues hit newsstands friday. things are a lot calmer today at the shore. don't have that severe flooding. but the wind, that's still blowing. cold winds today coming out of the north west. we have had snow in the poconos overnight. we have more coming today. and even some snow showers in other areas north and west of the philadelphia region. see the camera shaking because the wind is so strong. 42 degrees. that temperature hasn't budged all night or all morning. 17 miles an hour, gusting to 30 miles an hour right now. the center of the nor'easter just east of boston and the circulation around it bringing in a northwest wind, causing lake affect snow up in new york state. getting blasted with snow. but this kind of wind direction is generally a dry type of direction for us. with certain conditions, it isn't. that's one of the exceptions today. 29 in the poconos, but well above freezing everywhere else. 37 in quakertown and doylestown. 39 in wrightstown and trenton. snow can fall at these temperatures. this temperature will drop. it may not drop all the way to freezing. i think any snow would melt on roads. the wind gusts impressive, 38 miles an hour in northeast philly, 35 in allentown, 36 in wilmington. we will see the wind gusts throughout the afternoon. that puts the windchills into the 20s and low to mid 30s in parts of the area. a lot of clouds across the area. we will see more of that. a lot of clouds around out into the ocean for hundreds of miles with that nor'easter. starting to see a little bit more in the way of sprinkles. look at what's happening now here in the poconos and down toward the lehigh valley we're starting to see some of the snow i've been talking about coming down toward the southwest. it could reduce visibility for a while. not necessarily accumulate on roads. that's a different story in the poconos. it will accumulate on roads because temperatures are colder there. that's why the winter weather advisory is in effect. as we go through the rest of the day, the clouds linger and some of those snow showers start spreading down to the south. don't be too surprised if you see some of these snowflakes, even coming down into the philadelphia area at some point later today or tonight. not necessarily long lasting. we watch the temperatures. it's still going to be windy and cold tomorrow. for the rest of the day today, temperatures holding about steady. maybe dropping a touch with a wind gust up to 35 miles an hour. the snow showers to the north and west of philadelphia. becoming more expansive as we go through the afternoon. more people will be seeing some of those snowflakes. tomorrow, cold and breezy. not quite as windy. the temperature will be down a little bit. it will feel the same and the chance of snow flurries or a couple snow showers. it's cold on friday, saturday morning, saturday afternoon. but not as windy. by sunday, the temperature is getting up closer to 50 and with less wind and a lot of sunshine, should feel pretty decent and dry weather, light winds for the eagles game and a little bit milder next week. we will be right back. how about philadelphia's wilt chamberlain putting his mark on basketball. he is on two forever stamps. current and former nba players are expected to be on hand for the dedication ceremony. they unveiled the stamp friday night's game. he scored 100 points in a game and let his team to a world championship in 1967. at 3:00, "ellen" is all new. then it's nbc 10 news at 4:00. counterfeit concerns. the funny money floating around our region and why investigators are green with frustration over the techniques they are using to fool the rest of it. glenn "hurricane" schwartz here now with a look at the forecast this afternoon. >> by 4:00, some parts of the area seeing some snow showers that are not seeing anything right now. it's cold. it's windy. the wind will continue out there, even tomorrow it will be kind of on the breezy side. a little lower chance of the snow showers as we go through thursday and then friday. >> for mid december it looks nice for sunday's game. >> light winds. >> thanks for watching nbc 10 news at 11:00. i'm vai sikahema. >> theresa: okay, so, if you get a text from theresa donovan, then you'll know that's me. >> melanie: what?
