"hurricane" schwartz. glenn. >> it's already hot out there. already almost as hot as it was yesterday at 9:00 a.m. 87 in wilmington. we've had a lot of sunshine here but we're talking about even temperatures warm right at the shore. the sea breeze, they are going to level off a little bit. look at georgetown, 90 degrees. we do air quality issues. the ozone in the orange range unhealthy for sensitive individuals especially in jersey today. despite the heat and humidity, we have no showers nearby. back to the west, that is what is going to be developing and affecting us not so much this afternoon. look at the future cast even at 6:00. not much going on. but here it comes this evening. showers and thunderstorms, maybe some pretty heavy rain with that. that's coming in more likely this evening. we'll see if there are any more storms this week. we're going to get some relief from this heat and humidity with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> thanks, glenn. skyforce 10 over pennsylvania turnpike earlier this morning after tractor-trailer overturned. the truck was carrying 30 pounds of toilet paper. it did not spill over. this causing slow moving traffic. accident 9:30 near exit 21. right now one lane shut down but two others are getting by. tonight a vigil held at council rock in bucks county to remember three teenager boys killed in a weekend crash. the accident happened saturday morning in paupack township in the poconos. 15 and 16 years old kellen keffer, ryan lesher and digney would have been sophomores. they played soccer, lacrosse and basketball. three others injured in the crash. police tell us both surviving victims remain in the hospital. we talked to the superintendent who said this is not how they wanted to start their school year. >> everyone crying, really sad, tears everywhere. no one really wants to talk about it. >> there are no words to speak the loss. as the school community we reach out to the parents and let them know we are there for them and horribly affected by the loss of these three great kids. >> today freshman students back in school. upper classmen tomorrow. many will gather for that vigil tonight at 5:00. a busy morning here at glennside elementary school in montgomery county. some kids escorted by their parents for the first day of school. others dropped off at the school bus ready to begin this new school year. today we begin our week long series to help you get ready for school. less than a week students in philadelphia will head to the classroom. as katy zachry reports, they will bring supplies for their desk and the classroom. s- this is a list supplies from a middle school math teacher in philadelphia in addition to items like pens and paper, she's asking her students to bring in paper towels, hand sanitizer and clorox wipes, just another expense handed down to students. >> you're taller than me. >> i am. >> three-year-old simone is excited for her first day of school. >> she's going to head start. she requires notebooks, book bag and pencils, things like that. >> her mom michelle is starting college, too. there's not a lot of extra money for school supplies. unfortunately this year philadelphia public school teachers are having to ask students to bring cleaning supplies, sanitizer and reams of paper in addition to the list because of the budget crisis. so the cost of going back to school just got higher. >> it really does add up. as long as we cater to the children and teenagers that really need it, i feel like we're doing our job. >> northern children's servicings has been helping students and moms for decades. their back to school drive has brought in dozens of backpacks, notebooks, rulers. they cover staples for many families who this year are having to spend hard earned dollars on classroom supplies the district used to offer. >> it does not surprise me. with the school district lose sog much money this year, it's just bad for the children. so this is a really kidnapping and sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl. prosecutors say christina regusters knew the little girl from an after school program. taking a look at the surveillance program it shows the little girl taken out of bryant middle school january 13th. today forensic experts are expected to testify. nbc 10 has a reporter inside the courtroom. we'll have an update on today's testimony on nbc 10 news at 4:00 and nbc10.com. a mansour advised after being shot in the back overnight. this morning police are searching for the gun mann wanted at this shooting. it happened 41st and lancaster in philadelphia. investigators say at least six shots were fired. the victim is in stable condition. from nbc 10 south jersey bureau, a council meeting will be held tonight where residents of a burlington county town will be able to express their feelings over a vote to change the name of a rec center. councilmembers in willingboro voted to change the name of the john f. kennedy center to the barack obama center. feeling have been mixed about this decision. the street that the recreation center is on will keep the name john f. kennedy way. department of transportation spreading the word about lane closures on i-95. starting tonight the north and southbound lanes of i-95 will be reduced from four lanes to three from the bridge street and cottman avenue exits. the lane closures are scheduled for every night this week. we're following a developing story out of the south today. the search is on after dozens of teens escaped from a detention center. we'll tell you how they got loose. president obama heads overseas today. we'll tell you who he will be meeting with and how his trip could help him deal with two major world crisis. >> when are we going to get relief from this heat and humidity? when and where will next storms hit? i'll have the first alert weather forecast coming up. the search is under way for nine teenagers who escaped a juvenile detention center. 32 escaped, more than half have been captured. officials say teenagers somehow got out of their locked dorms last night and managed to slip underneath a perimeter fence. >> reports they are in the vicinity and police out looking for them. they are coordinating the search right now and hope to get them back soon. >> police are using helicopter and dogs to track down the teens that remain on the loose. this is the second security breach at the detention center in the last few months. this afternoon president obama will head overseas to deal with the threat of isis and ongoing crisis in ukraine. nbc correspondent tracie potts takes a look at where the president is going and what he hopes to accomplish. >> you are looking at videos of somali soldiers taking over a town that had been captured by militant group al shabaab. overnight a u.s. drone shot missiles. it's believed they were going after al shabaab's leader. this as president obama flies to estonia this afternoon. that former soviet step is worried about a russian takeover. from there it's onto nato summit in wales where u.s., uk and others are expected to discuss airstrikes to defeat isis militants in syria. >> that will mean military assets. germany has already announced it will be selling weapons to those who are trying to oppose the isis forces. >> the u.s. is already going after isis in iraq. this pentagon video shows humanitarian drops there. some lawmakers say they are willing to do back to washington early to give president obama authority to expand airstrikes. >> it's our duty and our constitutional responsibility to debate and to vote on any measures that would expand this war. >> but the push into syria is on hold for now. the president's contributes hope he'll take a stronger stance like the british. >> we need a firm security response with military action to go after terrorists. >> the uk ready to go. the u.s. waiting for more countries to join the effort. >> now, while nature as a group may not get involved in going after isis, experts say a number of nato member nations like u.s. and uk likely will. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. in iraq today at least 18 people were killed and more than 50 injuries after two bombs went off in baghdad. bombs two cars near a popular cafe in a mainly shiite district. no one claimed responsibility for the blast. the u.n. said more than 14 people killed in iraq in august as iraqi government forces continue to fight isis militants in northern iraq. british prime minister david cameron takes action amid new terror concerns in uk. cameron wants to give police power to seize passports from citizens suspected of traveling abroad to fight with terror groups. he's asking to expand anti-terror laws. cameron also wants to block suspected british jihadi fighters from entering the country. intelligence officials believe around 500 brits have gone to fight in syria and iraq. an assault by pro-russian sources forced ukrainian military to retreat from airport in luhansk. this is the second largest rebel held city. russia consistently denies allegations it has sent troops or equipment into eastern ukraine. the rubles have been fighting ukrainian troops since mid april in a conflict that has killed more than 2500 people. the remains of nine more victims of the malaysia airlines plane that was shot down in ukraine have been returned for burial. honor guards escorted coffins come kuala lumpur. it's suspected these are the last to return to malaysia. the remaining malaysian passengers classified as missing. all 298 people on board died when the plane was shot down in july. pope francis uses soccer to promote peace. the match for peace put together teams featuring muslim, christian, hindu and buddhist players. last night's match in rome raised money for at risk children. today testing begins on an experimental vaccine for the ebola virus. the national institutes of health will test 20 adults to see if their immune systems respond to the virus. the results won't be known until the end of the year. the vaccine developed by nih and glaxcosmithkline. tests for other ebola vaccines will happen this fall. an outbreak has killed more than 1500 people in west africa. >> announcer: now nbc first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, the humidity really started climbing yesterday and we've seen the heat go up as well. the combination of temperature and humidity pretty brutal during the day today. we're going to be tracking some thunderstorms mostly for tonight. we have that ozone alert for today. we have a fair amount of sunshine right now. the temperature just skyrocketing. 88 degrees already, west southwest at 10. it feels like 93. we haven't said that much this summer. that's for sure. we were 81 friday and saturday, 93 on sunday. not quite 90 yesterday. so it's not going to make it an official heat wave, at least not where today's temperature. the next couple of days, that's possible. 89 in northeast philly and dover and millville already at this hour. look at the feels like temperatures. 96 in dover and atlantic city, 95 in millville. even 90 in redding at 11:00 a.m. we have a dry start to the day, but things are going to change. this is with a front that's coming in from the west. now it's going to bring drier air in for tomorrow, but watch what happens as we go through tonight. so as we go through the rest of the day, it's dry, not raining. it looks like perhaps a band or line of showers and storms starts coming through the area from west to east this evening. some of this is on the heavy side. gusty winds and hail. there's 11:00 coming right through the ibs-95 corridor and then it's gone. once that's gone, it's going to be dry for a while. in many parts of the area, we could use some rain. we don't necessarily need severe weather, but we could use rain here. it's been dry lately. 2 tomorrow before the sea breeze comes in. they have been in the mid-80s today and sea breeze just now coming in. thursday and friday just beautiful. we have some comfortable weather coming in. high temperatures in the 90s and feels like temperature close to 100 in some places. tonight down to 70 in philadelphia, 62 north and west with those evening thunderstorms. again, some of them pretty strong. for tomorrow sunny, not quite as hot. definitely less humid. it's pretty hot. still not too humid thursday. friday the humidity starts coming back. saturday looks like the last of the hot weather with thunderstorms and then some showers possible on sunday before it cools off again monday. >> all right. thank you, glenn. after an uzi accident in arizona involving a child, there's been a new decision about how young is too young to shoot a gun. now another child is involved in a mishap involving a weapon at a gun range. details on this most recent incident. plus could certain tv shows and movies make you eat more? we'll tell you what a new study is saying about that. a california boy is hospitalized after he was shot in the chest while doing target practice at his family's property. police say the 77-year-old boy was shooting a single shot action rifle when all of a sudden he complained of pain in his chest. his dad saw a small hole in his t-shirt. investigators say the seven-year-old was a few yards away from a shooter. both were aiming at targets 40 yards away. police think it could have been a ricochet but they are still investigating. the boy is expected to survive. this incident comes just a week after a new jersey girl accidentally shot and killed her firearms instructor. the nine-year-old was learning how to i don't an uzi when the recoil sent the gun over her head towards 39-year-old charles vacca. vaca died at the hospital. a tennessee family says they are glad to be alive this morning and it's all thanks to their job. this is jinx, a seven-month-old pit bull who started whining sunday morning. the nashville family said that's when they woke up, smelled smoke and ran out of the house. >> people see some animals as pets. no, this dog is my family. i wouldn't have a family if she wasn't here with us. >> wow. family said they rescued jinx who was on the way to the pound. jinx returned the favor. >> overeating linked to obesity but not all shows are egg wal. researchers had 94 college students watch action movie, talk show, movie with no sand snacking on candy, cookies and fruit. those watching the movie watched twice as many snacks as those watching talk show. even people in the silent movie group ate one-third more than the talk show group. a plane load full of passengers oxygen masks deploy on a flight to florida. we'll hear from those passengers. a high-rise fire overseas leaves people trapped. we'll have more on the rescue effort. checking out our top stories right now, a tractor-trailer carrying 30,000 pounds of toilet paper overturned this morning on the pennsylvania turnpike. the toilet paper did not spill out into the roadway but it did take some time for workers to clear the scene. the driver of the tractor-trailer is okay. a vigil held at 5:00 at council rock high school in bucks county to honor three teenager boys killed in a weekend crash. 15 and 16-year-old cullen keffer, seamus digney would have been sophomores. near the mosul dam in iraq since beginning air support this year, u.s. carried out a total of 123 airstrikes. 82 were to protect the mosul dam. now to our other top story of the morning, closing of revel casino in atlantic city. >> revel casino is now closed. >> we found this video of the closing announcement made at revel on social media discovery app called banjo. the $2 billion casino was only open for two years before closing this morning. more than 2,000 workers out of a job. some gamblers tell us revel will be missed in that tourist town. >> it was a good casino. i won a lot in the beginning but then i wasn't winning that much. but i'm shocked it's closed. >> >> atlantic city started with 12 casinos but will have just eight by mid september. early this morning state gaming officers gave final approval for trump plaza to shut down. we will continue to follow developments leading up to the closure on september 16th. this group of senior citizens spend this morning protesting gladys b. jacobs development in spring garden. they are up set after asking for 4 hour security at 11th and wallace street. protesters are in front of the building so no one can enter. they are blocking off two neighboring blocks. we called philadelphia housing authority. we're waiting for a response. >> now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. live look at cape may, some people extending the labor day holiday. they just don't want to say good-bye to summer. a little relief from the heat there but it is still very humid even down the shore. that is the most likely place to remain of the day today. we've got lots of sunshine from the poconos to the shore to the city. the humidity is very high. along with the temperatures, feels like normal july around here. here we are in september. haven't had much this summer. 89 in northeast philly. and it's very dry out there. at least the atmosphere as a whole right at the ground feels pretty moist but the rest of the atmosphere isn't moist enough to create showers or storms until you get back into eastern ohio. that part of the system is moving our way and should be affecting us tonight. not so much this afternoon. here is the future cast as we go through three, four, five, six, we've got nothing on there. but we'll be watching it in central pennsylvania getting ready to charge through here this evening, generally between about 8:00 north and west to about midnight south and east, then it's out of here. once it's out of here, we're going to have lower humidity for a while. we'll talk about the timing of this storm and how much relief we'll get and for how long with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> take a look at this video. this is a tornado moving through dexter, kansas. that's just east of arkansas city. the twister can be seen touching down as it is illuminated by lightning. there are no reports of any injuries. a storm chaser was injured after he was struck by lightning in iowa. the man was in dennison where a strong storm system moved through sunday night. the man is expected to make a full recovery. the storms flooded streets and knocked out power throughout central iowa. and today heavy rain triggering landslides and flash flooding in southwest china. officials say eight people were killed, 24 hours are still missing. the missing include 11 coal miners who were buried in a landslide. 500 rescue workers trying to evacuate 7,000 people in that region. then in france crews searching through the rubble after an apartment building explosion. the explosion leveled the four-story building in a suburb of paris yesterday. officials say initial reports show it may have been caused by a gas leak. seven people have been confirmed dead. two others are still missing. fire breaks out in one of the oldest and most well-known buildings in india. it's in the heart of the city formerly known as calcutta. heavy fire burned on one floor of that building trapping four people. they were rescued by a ladder truck. it's not clear what started that fire. thirteen cubans rescued after they were spotted by the mexican navy in the gulf of mexico. the men and women were inside a makeshift boat partially made out of wood. the navy said two others didn't survive. one died during the trip. a second person died from a heart attack after being rescued. they told authorities they left cuba august 7th and they had run out of food and water. producers in northern mexico say they are facing a crisis after a mining spill. it forced them to throw away their milk for the past month. one rancher estimated his losses at around 6,000 gallons. the spill in early august sent millions of gallons of pollutants into rivers and reservoir behind the dam that supplies water to local residents. we have new video from inside an airlines flight forced to make an emergency landing in south carolina this weekend. this from a cell phone. about two hours in, oxygen masks were deployed. it left grand rapids on the way to sanford outside orlando. the pilot landed safely in greenville, south carolina. passengers describe those scary moments. >> it got cold in the plane and all of a sudden all of the oxygen masks fell down. >> as soon as i looked ute the window, they told me to put it down and not look outside. that scared me a little bit. >> how scary. they provided $200 travel vouchers. the airline says there will be full investigation to determine what caused that plane to lose pressure. a cracked windshield forced american airlines to make emergency landing. the plane took off yesterday. moments later the captain report add cracked windshield and immediately returned to the airport. after a safe landing, passengers and crew were switched to a different plane. the lawyer representing the family of michael brown has taken up another high-profile case. this one involving the son of a louisiana minister who died while in police custody. victor white iii's death ruled a suicide. the 22-year-old was arrested back in march on a minor drug charge. officials say he shot himself while handcuffed inside a police cruiser. his parents are demanding an independent investigation saying they are convinced their son did not kill himself. >> to somehow get his arms over his head, shoot himself in the chest from right to left, even though he's left-handed. >> victor white sr. said his son had a one-year-old daughter, a girlfriend and a job and would never have taken his own life. the louisiana state police said it's moving forward with their investigation. attorney benjamin crump is also representing the family of michael brown. the unarmed teen was shot and killed by a police officer in ferguson, missouri. that officer claimed brown charged him. but witnesses say that wilson was the aggressor. the fbi is working to get to the bottom of a phone hacking attack that involved nude pictures of celebrities. the hacker claims he got the picture through apple icloud. many people are concerned about their own security. nbc's jacob rascon reports. >> jennifer lawrence took the stage for a different reason after dozens of risque poses and on a website, supermodel kate upton, rihanna and ariana grande and other women in what they call the biggest celebrity hacking ever. it's a scenario like the comedy sex tape when a private video goes viral after getting lost in the cloud. >> it went up to the cloud. >> you can't get it down from the cloud. >> nobody understands the cloud. >> what's most alarming to many is how the unidentified hacker claims he got the pictures through the apple icloud, which uses servers like these to back up the digital lives of hundreds of millions of people. we caught up with former federal cyber crime prosecutor. >> by storing on the cloud, it becomes a one-stop shop for hackers. hackers only have to break in one place to get everybody's data. if the celebrities are vulnerable, it means everybody is vulnerable. >> the fbi said it was aware of the issue and looking into it while apple said we take user privacy very seriously and are actively investigating this report. publicist for jennifer lawrence and kate upton all but confirmed the photos condemning the leaks as flagrant and outrageous violations of privacy. some celebrities like aryano grande say photos of her are fake. actress mary winstead tweeted, to those of you looking at photos i took my husband years ago in the privacy of my home, hope you feel great about yourself. a reminder privacy is one click away from public scrutiny. nbc news, los himself in a home there. this is a live picture from a scene. it's all happening near a daycare center. we still don't know if anyone was inside that daycare center at the time and we don't know if of the whole year. hot and humid. feels like temperature will be close to 100 in parts of the area. we're tracking thunderstorms for much of the region tonight. we have the ozone alert for part of the area today. we see fair weather clouds out there right now. that's going to be the case through the afternoon. it's 88 but feels like temperature is 93. humidity of 55% is pretty high considering the temperature. the air quality today, unhealthy for people with sensitive individuals like children, the elderly and people with respiratory illnesses. you would want toçoi stay indoo as much as possible especially during peak heating hours. temperatures in the 80s across much of the air. 89 in blue bell already. 90 at cherry hill. 87 in wrightstown, even at the shore look at those temperatures. the sea breeze starting to come in. but that's pretty hot. look at the feels like temperatures. way up into the 90s. we're dry so far but there are some showers back to the west. that is what is coming in as we go through the night tonight. not this afternoon. look at that. coming through between 8:00 and midnight. some of it on the heavy side. we could use some rain. it's been dry. hot an humid. temperatures well into the 90s. feels like near 100 and 70 for the low tonight. philadelphia north and west, watch out for evening thunderstorms get those umbrellas for your evening plans. tell you that. tomorrow you won't need it because it's going to be less humid, still fairly hot the rest of the week. humidity starts coming back friday and storms return saturday. >> thanks, can't imagine any number of kids, one out of five, to be exact, who get out of bed and don't have the privilege of those types of choices. some of them don't know where their next meal is coming from. some of them don't have breakfast. they go to school hungry. i don't know about you but i couldn't do my math home work when i did eat breakfast. imagine being a growing human who has to try to keep up with the other kids having not eaten and not knowing where their next meal is coming from. >> absolutely. hard to believe it's happening in this country. i wanted to ask lindsey following up on that to tell about no kids hungry problem because that is addressing the very issue you just talked about. >> no kid hungry is all about ending childhood hunger in america, not making a dent in it or a little relief. we know this is a solvable problem as alex was talking about. we know we can end hunger for good and make this the last generation that ever experiences hunger in america. right now 560,000 kids in pennsylvania are struggling with hunger. they are waking up in the morning. lunch at school may have been the last meal they had. we just think -- actually, we know we can do better restaurants participating locally in the dine out for no kid hungry campaign going for all the month of september just by eating in those establishments. some of them are fancy and a lot of them are fast, casual and family establishments, just by dining out, eating and drinking, you're helping to end hunger by patronizing these particular restaurants that are participating nationwide in this program. you can be politically active, write your congressperson about statistics in your state. so many things can you do. you can share recipes to help parents come up with new ideas for those families who have limited resources. i would say 90 meals and 90 ways is actually conservative. there's probably 90,000 ways. by no kid hungry.org, you can really get some ideas. >> we have all of
