Police say eric frein, the man accused of opening fire on two Pennsylvania State troopers talking to investigators. Hes facing a long list of 11 charges after todays court appearance. Nbc 10 has learned hes been housed in a maximum productive custody situation right now. Freins next court date is in three weeks. But police are still exploring the abandoned hangar where he was found last night. c tonight were working this story on several new angles. We have the police radio calls that show exactly what happened when frein was taken into custody. Also, were getting answers about the injuries that frein seems to have suffered on his face. Were also exploring the cost of this entire manhunt. Well begin with nbc 10s Randy Gyllenhall whos in pike county. Reporter i talked with two sources close to this investigation who tell me investigators found some sort of Electronic Device at that airport hangar where eric frein was hiding. Theyll sift through the data to see if he outside contact. Frein was here in a pike county courtroom today where we learned much more about his time spent on the run. After waking up in a jail cell, eric frein is driven to the pike county courthouse. The state troopers who escort him inside get a round of applause from a thankful crowd. After 48 days, this manhunt is over. Frein makes a brief appearance in front of a judge, avoiding eye contact. He says he understands he could face the death penalty. Eric, are you sorry . Reporter not 20 minutes later hes back outside to face the public and the cameras. Locals even get a few words in to the accused cop killer. Do you feel bad now that those little boys have no father . Ive never come that close to someone like that. Reporter people here say they had to come to court to make sure it really was him, the man on the run that caused so many problems. We all live in the woods. We dont know how desperate he was or where he was, what he was going to do. Reporter that fear now gone after frein was court by u. S. Marshals in this abandoned airport. Police say he was hiding out in a hangar. They found a knife, a rifle and a pistol, the culmination of a 10 million search effort that ended without a struggle. I believe he stepped out of the hangar, perhaps to get fresh air and Surveillance Team was already there from the Marshall Service that was able to take him into custody without incident. Reporter and freinwas immediately placed into hand cuffs outside that airport hangar, the same handcuffs used by murdered trooper bryon dickson. In pike county, Randy Gyllenhall, nbc 10 news. The nbc 10 investigators got a copy of exclusive radio transmissions from state police. Take a listen to what was said moments after freins capture. Er thisry lane road, subject is in custody, handcuffed. Youre going to go to the hangar and make con tack with the marshalls there. To confirm, the subject will be held. Car two is en route with corporal dixons handcuffs. Hell be there in approximately 20 minutes and well stand by until that take place. The final radio transmission was made from fallen trooper bryon dicksons patrol car. It said the cruiser was headed to the Police Barracks with, quote, one package in the back. When eric frein was taken into custody last night he was banged up and bruised. The visible cuts on freins face. That brings up the question whether there was a struggle when he was arrested. Frein surrendered without a fight. There is conflicting reports on where the injuries came from. The u. S. Marshal said frein got the scrapes on his face when he was taken down on the as fault. There was no struggle with Law Enforcement. He has talked to us about things that occurred to him while he made his way through the woods and so forth over that 40 plus day period. But that was an injury that occurred to him at some point in his flight. U. S. Marshals also say frein had a defeated look on his face when they snuck up on him and took him into custody by surprise. Frein facing several charges for the shooting death of bryon dickson, douglass was critically injured in the ambush. He continues to recover at a rehab center. Skyforce 10 flew over the hangar where frein was capturedc its seven miles from the camelback resort. Police estimate the cost of 10 million. The search involved hundreds of officers fanning out across the poconos. The search included dense woods, caves, schools, vacation homes. At one point, halloween was canceled in barrett township as a precaution. Tonight, trick or treating is back on. Turner brought her to this mcdonalds yesterday where she wrote her plea for help. You realize theres Surveillance Video from the restaurant and neighboring businesses. We were able to identify who those people were and the clothing they were wearing. Within three hours police found the couple walking outside the dover mall. The victim had a no contact order issued against her husband. Hes being held over 600,000 bail. A lawmaker is taking action after hazing allegations rock a local high school. School officials arent giving details about the student but warn that other children at the Montgomery County school may have been exposed. This is the second case of whooping cough at Wissahickon High School in less than two months. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis is known for causing uncontrollable, violent coughing which makes it hard to breathe. The best way to prevent the disease is to get vaccinated. One week after a local High School Football team became the center of a hazing investigation, pennsylvania lawmakers introducing a new bill that would protect students from harmful rituals. All varsity and Junior Varsity players at central bucks west and the Coaching Staff were suspended last thursday. State representative ron marsico developed a bill that would hazing at pennsylvania schools a crime. It would require schools to write and enforce policies involving hazing. Pennsylvania law considers hazing a misdemeanor but it only applies to colleges and universities. Athletes, were role models. Like anyone, people to look up to. Much of the area, a rainy day on saturday and a windy day on sunday, along with the cold. Right now we see those clouds. Looks like it will rain any second. As youll see, theres not a lot on radar. 51 degrees east northeast at 8. Starting to get the easterly winds coming in. Temperatures down at 48 in westchester, 49 in glassboro, 49 in wilmington. Its already chilly. Its not necessarily going to cool off a whole lot tonight because of the clouds and the east wind. And youll see that wind, the wind direction starting to come out of the northeast. Not very strong yet. But by the time we get up tomorrow morning, well be feeling the wind. Were not necessarily concerned about the rain to the west. Its whats going to be developing right offshore that is most significant. This is significant, too. This is the beginning of the rain that is going to be moving in. So in new jersey, especially ocean, burlington county, the first place to get the rain in the western suburbs would be the last places. Theres more developing down to the south. The futurecast shows by 9 00, more rain building up at the shore. And moving toward the philadelphia i95 corridor. By 11 00, its getting kind of wet. Then it keeps moving west. By 1 00 a. M. , 3 00 a. M. In some cases not necessarily white the entire time, especially towards the shore. Coastal flood advisory as well. Waves of rain coming in. It may not rain all day but its going to be probably hours of it across a good bit of the area. Its not going to accumulate. Maybe a half inch down the shore, a quarter inch in the philadelphia area. Its the number of hours of rain that is the real problem. Not so much for the trick or treaters, especially the little ones going out early. By 8 00, its stillc probably just cloudy unless youre right near the shore. 39 degrees and the chance of rain goes up by 9 or 10 00 tonight. By tomorrow morning, its way up there.
