Snow. Nbc10s first alert chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is tracking snow in the area this week. Give us the details. Renee, we do get it once in a while. I know shes terrified of it but weve had less than 2 inches total for the month. Now, we have cloudy skies across much of the area now. There is no threat tonight or tomorrow. That flag is blowing in some cold air and were already down into the 30s in some portions of the area. Mid40s to the south. The wind, pretty strong out of the west. Were gusting up over 30 miles an hour at the moment. And that will diminish as we go through the night tonight. The windy minimumishes tonight and the temperature goes down. We watch to the west and see this next system come in as we go into the middle of the week. Some people getting snow others rain. More on the timing of that with the sevenday in a few minutes. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with new information about the deadly highway pileups in our area that killed three and left dozens of cars in a mangled mess. Cars and trucks slid out of control on a sheet of ice along two local interstates. The schuylkill expressway in a 60vehicle chain recollection and on the blue route four cars. One who died on the blue route was a man that worked on Dover International speedway. Jason anderson a husband and father of a young child. Sh this is friends tell us andersons son and wife were in the car when the crash happened. Today the president of Dover International speedway released this statement to nbc10 saying, jasons death is a tragic loss for all of us who considered him a close friend as well as a loss for Dover International speedway. Many others who were involved in crashes in the area yesterday are nursing their injuries today. Nbc10 Rosemary Connors speak to drivers. Reporter truly terrifying they describe it as a life and death situation, one in which they hope to never find themselves in again. I was very lucky. Reporter she and dozens of others could be considered the lucky ones from yesterdays disaster on the schuylkill expressway. Even though their cars are totaled, they lived through the accident. This driver who is still shaken up and does not want to reveal her identity showed us pictures of her damaged car and the stitches she received on her wrist. I started to brake once i seen them start to crash. Then my car did a whole 360 and i ended up facing the front of the front of my car was facing the eastbound lanes and the oncoming traffic tboned me. One sheet of ice. Reporter tony a construction worker from williamstown shows us the scene he encountered on the walt whitman bridge yesterday. He describes it as a salvage of pieces of cars and parts everywhere. I was pumping the braking. It was sliding out of control. Reporter tony missed that mess in front of him, but another driver rearended his truck. With three people dead in the crashes in the blue route and schuylkill, the drivers who made it home at the end of the day are grateful. A near miss you know. It could have went another way entirely. Just a scary thing. I kept thinking about my son, im not going to die in this car. Reporter and today a very much different picture than yesterday. As you can see the roads are treated, traffic is moving smoothly. Drivers say that the worst of yesterday has passed. Reporting live along city avenue im Rosemary Connors, nbc10 news. Lets talk more about what led to those icy conditions on the roads and sidewalks. Nbc10s first alert meteorologist Sheena Parveen was live on the air yesterday helping us navigate through it all. Sheena what happened . Reporter this was a very unusual situation. Earlier indications were that the rain was not going to move in until temperatures got a little above freezing later in the morning. And this is the way it started yesterday. 6 30 in the morning, philadelphia north and west up to trenton, you see the pink here. This was freezing drizzle. The strange thing about this is it didnt move inn from the south. Pretty much developed right on top of us. This very light moisture was falling, coating the roads, which were either at or below freezing at this time. And we continue to see this as we went through the later morning hours. Freezing drizzle at the start, developing on top of us developed quite a few hours earlier than earlier expected. So, that is why the situation was so bad through the morning. Now, we go from 7 00, 7 30 8 00, 8 30 even 9 00 in the morning, and we have even more moisture moving in. Those temperatures not able to climb with that moisture already in place. Investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that killed one person. It started on the top floor of the lynwood garden apartments. Investigators say the fire caused part of the floor to collapse to an apartment below. The victim has not yet been identified but were told the red cross is assisting to families with housing. Investigators have not ruled on a cause for that fire. Today marks a grim anniversary in philadelphias Northern Liberty section. The unsolved murder of amber long. A year ago today the young architect was killed for her purse as her mother looked on. She graduated from philadelphia university. She was walking to her car with her mother when two men attacked them. Surveillance cameras along front street caught this crime. Police say one of the men called at longs purse. Even though she didnt resist the thief shot her in the chest. The two men then ran off without the purse. Investigators have yet to make an arrest. The reward stands at nearly 20,000. And Cumberland County bridgetons mayor is using this holiday to call for calm three weeks after a policeinvolved shooting. Two officers involved in the shooting are suspended until an investigation is complete. Bridgeton mayor kelley issued an open letter to residents. In it he writes the Martin Luther king jr. Holiday reminds us that the choice between division and unity, like the choice between building up and tearing down, is not a new one. But it is one that requires reaffirming and renewal. And it is intended for times such as these. He also offered his condolences to the reed family. Secret service has tightened security at Vice President bidens home after shots were fired this weekend. He did not mention what happened as he spoke today in wilmington. Secret Services Says shots were fired from a speeding car in new castle county. Police later arrested a man but theyre trying to figure out if he was involved. The bidens were not home at the time. A celebration of dr. King in our Nations Capital today. Music helping to inspire the crowds at dr. Kings memorial in washington, d. C. Homeland security secretary jeh johnson were among those who laid a wreath at the base of the memorial. They honored the civil rights leaders sacrifice but say there is still more work to be done. Its billed as the largest dr. King day event in the nation. Nbc10 at Gerard College this morning, hosting the 20th annual greater philadelphia Martin Luther king jr. Day of service. Thousands of volunteers taking part in Community Service projects across the region. Mayor nutter and senator bob casey also helped out. To another Community Service in pottstown. Members of the united way of greater philadelphia and southern new jersey girls today leaders tomorrow had 600 literacy kits. They will go to young people in need. In wilmington new castle county, people gathering at Parkway Academy north on harrison street for a Community Cleanup and clothing giveaway. It was part of the mlk day of service. Volunteers collecting and sorting clothing. You can see there were a lot of donations there. As we mentioned, Vice President biden was in his home state. We had widespread icing yesterday morning, some localized icing this morning, but we also have no threat of that repeat tonight and for tomorrow morning. Places that might have been shaded, still could get some ices spots, but thats about it. We are tracking snow for the middle of the week and also a possible icy mix with that storm that will be affecting us. The wind is still blowing but its going to be diminishing as we go through the afternoon. Its already down a bit at philadelphia international. Weve seen a whole lot of days colder than that this winter so far. Upper 30s to the north and west. And low to mid40s farther to the south and east. These temperatures just a little above average for this time of the year. And the way it feels on your exposed skin, in the 30s. And on this date in 1994, the temperature got down to 5 below. Quite a bit of a difference isnt it . A lot of clouds around but no precipitation during the day today. Were watching the west. We will be watching the west for whats coming in. Not tomorrow. Not tomorrow night. And probably not wednesday morning. But later on during the day, from the west the precipitation comes in in the form of snow and in some cases it accumulates. Best chance is from philadelphia northward. We have some snow in the blue, ice in the pink, rain in the green. So this is more typical type of system as it goes through. And the greater amounts of snow likely to fall a little farther to the north. But there could be some accumulation and some ice threat all the way down into central delaware and south jersey. Computer models not unanimous on this. Some actually do give us fairly significant accumulation especially compared to what weve seen so far this winter. Mostly cloudy overnight tonight with windy minimumishing. 30 for the low in philadelphia. That wind down to 5 miles an hour. Its going to help a little bit. And tomorrow it wont be nearly as windy as today despite the mostly cloudy skies. Highs once again in the mid40s but it will be cold other wednesday because of the precipitation. Weve got snow. Weve got that icy mix and we have rain. Could be happening across the area at the same time so well get more and more detail on that as we get closer to the event. And, of course the temperature not going very far. Then it stays cold through thursday and friday. There will be a storm going by to our south on saturday. Well have to watch that. Another system coming by for next monday. So things are getting a little more active. Some people just never cease to amaze us. We have a perfect example for you.
