"early today" starts right now. good morning. and happy friday to you. i'm frances rivera. breaking overnight, just 24 hours after that controversial body slam of a reporter, greg gianforte is heading to washington as montana's sole house lawmaker. he beat ryan zinke. >> we want a congressman who will work with president trump to make america and montana great again. >> the win capped off a whirlwind final day of a campaign that saw gianforte charged for allegedly assaulting a reporter. it was caught by the reporter's audio recorder. >> i'll talk to you about that later. >> yes, but there's not going to be time. >> speak with shane please. >> i'm sick and tired of you guys. the last guy that came in here did the same thing. get the hell out of here. >> jesus! >> get the hell out of here. >> yes, you just broke my glasses. you just body slammed me and broke my glasses. >> gianforte made his first public statement since he was charged for that assault and offered a full-throated apology. >> last night i made a mistake. and i took an action that i can't take back. and i'm not proud of what happened. i should not have responded in the way that i did and for that i'm sorry. >> and you're forgiven. >> i should not have treated that reporter that way. and for that i'm sorry, mr. ben jacobs. >> the congressman-elect expected to be sworn in when the house returns in june. but before that he'll have to face a montana judge over his assault charges. exclusive word that the president's son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner is now under scrutiny by the fbi in the investigation about russia. just as the senate intel committee unanimously voted to grant leaders blanket authority to issue subpoenas in their own russian investigation. it's a fast moving story that we've been following all night for you. tracie potts has the latest from washington. >> reporter: hi, frances, good morning. it looks like jared kushner might not only talk to the senate intelligence committee which he's agreed to do, but the fbi may want to talk to him as well. multiple sources are telling nbc that he's under scrutiny by the fbi. now, let's clarify. that does not mean he's a subject or target of the investigation like paul manafort, like former national security adviser mike flynn, and it does not mean that he's necessarily done anything wrong or committed a crime, but he may know information that they need in this investigation. here's why that's significant. we know that jared kushner had at least two meetings with russian officials, with the russian ambassador and with a banker out of russia who, by the way, used to be an intelligence trainee that came under scrutiny of u.s. sanctions for three years. that information may aid in this investigation. what's his attorney say about it? take a look. his attorney says that kushner has cooperated with congress and he will cooperate with any other inquiry. the justice department isn't saying a lot at all. in fact, take a look at this statement. they're saying neither confirming nor denying that there's an investigation. of course, we already know that from testimony here. nor are they confirming or denying that kushner is under scrutiny or subject or anything connected to that investigation. but sources are telling us they want to talk to him. >> thank you. president trump is in sicily this morning, the start of the g-7 summit and the last stop on a foreign tour that's taken him to the middle east, across europe and included meetings with a slew of word leaders. nbc's jay gray is in sicily this morning. how will the president be finishing up this trip? >> reporter: good morning. with intense talks here, frances. look, we've seen war ships in the water behind me here, we've seen soldiers on the ground and tense security on this island as those leaders of seven nations gather for their meetings. one of the newest members of that group, president trump, under intense scrutiny after some strong words yesterday in belgium. president trump bullish in brussels, appearing to push aside the prime minister of montenegro to get to the front row of the nato family picture. >> nato members must finally contribute their fair share. >> reporter: and scolding european leaders for not meeting defense funding obligations. currently only the u.s. and four other member countries do. >> this is not fair to the people and taxpayers of the united states. >> reporter: mr. trump faced some confrontation as well. british prime minister theresa may furious about intelligence leaks in the investigation of the manchester attack. the president in a written statement promising to get to the bottom of it and ordering a justice department review. today secretary of state rex tillerson will visit the uk to try to ease frustrations and concerns. as president trump takes his seat at the g-7 summit in sicily where the white house expects a robust discussion on trade and climate change. during his campaign, mr. trump, who has called global warming a hoax promised to walk away from u.s. commitments to cut greenhouse gas commitments under the 2015 paris agreement. he's expected to be pushed on that here but has said he won't make a final decision before returning to washington. let's get back to that push in brussels. the white house saying the president was simply moving to his assigned spot for that group photo. when asked, the prime minister of montenegro said it was nothing, no big deal. >> nbc's jay gray, thank you. we're taking it all the way to the supreme court. that's what attorney general jeff sessions is saying this morning after a federal appeals court upheld one of the two bans on enforcing president trump's controversial executive order restricting travel from six predominantly muslim criminals. the virginia fourth circuit court of appeals voted 10-3 to uphold a decision by a maryland judge who said the order amounted to unconstitutional religious discrimination. the fourth circuit even cited mr. trump's own campaign words in their decision, claiming his past statements provided direct, specific evidence of what motivated his executive orders, his desire to exclude muslims from the united states. the search for accomplices in the deadly bombing in manchester continues this morning with police continuing raids. so far ten people have been detained the and eight remain in custody for questioning. we're also getting a new look at suspected bomber salman abedi reported to be seen in this video taken by a neighbor. police are also investigating statements his sister made to "the wall street journal" saying abedi wanted revenge for u.s. bombings in syria. kelly cobiella joins us from manchester. the chief constable called the later arrests substantial. what did they mean by that? >> reporter: he isn't going into detail by what that might mean but highly unusual for a top law enforcement officer like him to even get into that much detail about an ongoing investigation. the big question is have they gotten any closer to finding a bombmaker in this case. the threat level here is still at critical, which means an attack may be imminent. i want to take you just for a moment to see this incredible sea of flowers and stuffed animals and balloons that's growing by the day. people were here throughout the day yesterday and already coming again this morning to pay their respects. this as we're learning more about the suspected bomber's possible motivation. the sister of salman abedi apparently telling "the wall street journal" that he was very angry about bombings in syria. the associated press out with another report citing an unnamed relative saying he was angry about the treatment of muslims in this country, specifically the killing of an 18-year-old here in manchester last year. she said, quote, this was all about rage. there were more raids overnight. the searches continue throughout manchester. the bomb squad was called in and there was a neighborhood that was evacuated in wigan for a short time overnight. as i mentioned one more person arrested in the very early hours this morning bringing the total number of people in custody to eight. >> kelly cobiella, thank you. kind of a bumpy start for the memorial day weekend with 51 million people from texas to virginia in the path of severe weather. bill karins has the alarming details. not a great start here. >> no, potentially a dangerous day, a bunch of tornadoes could also occur in areas of arkansas, missouri, oklahoma, kansas. the people in the dallas area all the way back to virginia. more wind damage through tennessee, kentucky, north carolina. the area of orange is where the biggest threat of the tornadoes will be. also very large hail. portsmouth, little rock, and paducah, all these areas have to be under concern as we head into the beginning of our holiday weekend. here's a different depiction of where the severe weather outbreak will possibly be and there's also nice weather in new england, the southeast and also the west for the start o clouds overhead, but we're starting to dry out. the last few showers moving through northeast philadelphia, bucks county and into the lehigh valley. the showers will take a break this morning. we might see an afternoon shower, too. 50s now. the wind starting to pick up. a breezy one today. the neighborhood forecast for the holiday weekend ahead at 4:30. >> see you then. here's what we're working on for "nbc10 news today" -- >> following breaking news on the new jersey turnpike. a tractor-trailer and a bus collided overnight. dozens are injured. the aftermath of the crash is causing problems for drivers right now. a fare hike on the way for septa riders. what it means for commuters who take buses, trains, and trollies. and we are helping you get ready for the holiday weekend. we'll give you a look at what's happening around the region including down the shore. we'll break down the best weather days of the weekend and have a travel forecast if you're heading the road. >> see you in 20 minutes. seemingly routine traffic stop turns into be anything but. with" people don't stare anymore. i never joined in. that wasn't fair to any of us. i was covered. i tried lots of things over the years. but i didn't give up. i kept on fighting. i found something that worked. that still works. now?
