today is up with of the busiest travel days of the year. hope are you ready. we have millions out there treking aross the country to the see loved ones for the holidays. many will be flying. here's tom byrum costello with details. >> reporter: from coast-to-coast, a record setting travel season, with today the busiest, nationwide, 6 million are flying this season. atlanta, chicago, l.a. and denver. in the tower at chicago o'hare, controllers now using a new system to speed things along. flight paths reroutes and weather, now transmitted directly to the cockpit computer, cutting down on radio chatter and tarmac wait times. still the vast majority of americans, 94 million, are hitting the roads, gasoline now $2.26 on average up 13 cents in a month, at the utah dot center, they are preparing for a massive storm in the rockies. >> between 12 and 24 inches in the mountains, a lot of that will be blowing snow in the higher elevations. >> a rush to reunite with family and friend. >> obviously, weather is going to be a big factor in those travel plans. let's go to meteorologist bill karins. how bad will bit out there for travellers? >> especially in the mountainous areas, we have two storms one on the west coast, they will be talking about that all weekend long. light snow breaking out around kansas city, moving up into the des moines area, wisconsin during the day. this map is full of winter storm watches and advisories, mostly the mountains. we have this area here from wisconsin, areas of des moines, almost down here toward kansas. that's where we have a little light stuff this morning. also, later on, we bet the snow, moving no california into higher terrain. change is required. this is all the way through sunday night, christmas evening. this is going to be here in the day today. the heavy snow the blizzard conditions possible. dakotas on christmas day. so if you are traveling through high elevations out west, make sure you keep an eye on that forecast. it will be a little treacherous. >> bill karins, thank you for that. we have breaking news about the road rage killing in little rock, arkansas. police have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of the 3-year-old. gary holmes was the perpetrator t. driver hype her honked and she honked back. then that at driver opened fire at her, hitting, killing acen sitting in the back seat of the car t. shooter drove off in what was described as a plaque chevy impala. jail records show gary holmes was charmed with murder. could an arms race happen?
