A philadelphia judge will hear the first of 300 resentencing cases of juveniles that were sentenced to life without parole. Januarys ruling said the decision must be applied retroactivey which means those people in prison must be given a chance to be resentenced. The ruling aways to some 1,000 inmates across the country, including about 300 in philadelphia. I sat down yesterday with seth williams, Philadelphia District attorney and he told me the resentencing process is not an instant one. There are a lot of different parties, all working very hard together to ensure we get this right. Philadelphia has more individuals than need to be resentenced as a result of any other city in america. Important for your viewers to know 50 of them were convicted in the 80s and earlier. Williams told me it could take up to three years to review all the cases and give all 300 prisoners a resentencing hearing. New from overnight, a Person Police say was shot in a dispute between neighbors is being treated for a graze wound. The gunfire happened just before midnight on thoron avenue in west oak lane. So far there have been no arrests. A 5yearold girl rescued from a philadelphia house fire is in the hospital along with her mother and a Police Officer. The fire broke out yesterday afternoon. Witnesses watched the first rescue attempts but the smoke was too heavy. The girls mortgage and offduty Police Officer ended up injured trying to save her from the flames. Video shows firefighters breaking windows. They eventually got the girl out. Her mom ran in there several times to try to save her. She was coming out black from head to toe. Were hoping along with this community for a positive outcome for the mother and child. The girl and her mother are in critical condition. The officer is in stable condition. Now to a story we brought you as breaking news last nature at 11 00. Police have recovered the van of an elderly man found murdered in west philadelphia. Investigators say his killer drove off in it after strangling the Maintenance Man in his home on theodore street on tuesday. Police are still searching for the killer. Now to this story from Chester County. This is the face of a young life cut short. Ryan benjamin was found dead in east Coventry Township on memorial day. Fishermen discovered her body in a pond. The 24yearold was tied to a cinder block. Now police are trying to track down her killer. Authorities released pictures of jewelry and a tattoo. She worked as a preschool teacher at the warwick child care center. She lived with a family friend who said benjamin would also spend the night with friends. When she heard reports of a body found she became concerned. I tried calling her several times. It went right to voicemail, then i started to worry. Benjamins body showed no signs of strangulation, gunshot wound or blunt force trauma. Authorities believe someone killed her and dumped her body in the pond. The military is mourning the death of at least six Service Members who died on u. S. Soil yesterday. Those deaths came from accidents in two different states with a third accident destroying an air force jet. At least five soldiers died after an army truck overturned in a creek at ft. Hood, texas. Three other soldiers were rescued. Theyre in stable condition. Four soldiers are still missing. In nashville, a pilot wasc killed yesterday when his blue angels jet crashed during a practice session. Officials say the jet went down after takeoff near an airport where an air show is scheduled for this weekend. Authorities dont yet know what caused the crash. And in colorado springs, an f16 jet crashed at the air force Academy Commencement sayre money attended by president obama. No one was hurt in this crash, though. The pilot safely ejected. The president after learning about what happened, met with the pilot shortly after the incident to the thank him for his service. The air force said engine failure likely caused that crash. 4 07. A medical examiners report confirms prince died of a Drug Overdose. The findings confirm two months of speculation. The medical examiner in minnesota says the music legend died of an accidental feoverdos. Some synthetic forms can be up to 50 times stronger than heroin. The focus of the criminal investigation turns to determining who supplied the drug. Here in pennsylvania, Governor Wolf says he wants the state to take a bigger role in fighting opioid addiction. Yesterday he talked about the 34 million he put in his budge tote combat drug abuse. He said thats just to start. The money will help fund 50 Outpatient Treatment Centers across the state. Wolf calls the budget request a down yamt toward solving the problem of heroin and other pain killer abuse. Pennsylvania ranks among the top states in the country for Drug Overdose deaths. Meantime, new numbers from the Philadelphia HealthDepartment Show the deadliest sections of the city when it comes to overdoses. More people are dying from opioid and heroin overdoses in port richmond, fishtown, kensington and tacony more than any other parts of the city.
