Mother nature has the override, so unfortunately, we wont get a repeat, but it is nice and mild to start it wp the temperatures are very similar to yesterday morning. Were in the 50s right now. The results are in and a shift of power here at home and across the nation this morning. For the First Time Since 2006, republicans now control both houses of congress. A live picture here of the nations capitol in washington, d. C. The gop took back control of the senate with a series of victories in several swing states. Well have a breakdown of how that happened in just a moment. But first, the shift in power here in pennsylvania. Democrat tom wolf will be the new governor. He defeated incumbent republican tom corbett by a doubledigit margin, as the polls predicted. Wolf got about 57 of the vote to corbetts 43 . [ cheers and applause ] and there is the governorelect, driving that jeep into a Victory Party in york last night. That vehicle, of course, was featured prominently in wolfs political ads during his campaign. Wolf used his victory speech last night to lay out his vision for pennsylvania. Our ancestors realized that education was the key to a strong citizenship to a strong democracy, to a strong economy, to strong families, and we needed to invest in that. We need to make sure that we resurrect that idea here in pennsylvania and make sure that education is at the top of the list, not the bottom. Now, governor corbett, meantime, delivered his concession speech in pittsburgh last night. He said he phoned wolf to offer his congratulations, and then he summed up his term in office. Said i was going to do what is right for pennsylvania, the tough decisions, and people may not like it. Well, obviously, they didnt like it. I said i may be a oneterm governor, and i am, but i am proud of what we did, what we all did. As he alluded to there, corbett becomes the first pennsylvania governor to not win a second straight term since 1968. Well, now that the election is over, its time for the keystone States Government to move forward, and we sent nbc 10s jesse gary to find out exactly what tom wolf has to do as he prepares to take that first step in office. Jesse joins us live from university city. Good morning, jesse. Reporter chris, good morning to you. The polls showed wolf was always in the lead and the outcome in this governors race was never in doubt. Now comes the tricky part, now that the votes have been counted and cast, tricky part of governing. Wolf, a democrat, takes control of harrisburg, while republicans control both houses in the legislature. We spoke with ed rendell, who faced a similar situation while serving as governor. I think hes going to reach out to the republicans in the legislature and theyre going to have solid control of the legislatu legislature. But just as i faced when i became governor. And i think hell know how to move the things he wants to do. Reporter ive been researching some of wolfs Campaign Promises leading up to this momentous and historic day. Coming up in the next half hour, ill have more on what he plans to do. Live in university city, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. For the first time in eight years, republicans will control both houses of congress. The gop took back the senate by picking up seven victories in swing states, a narrow win in North Carolina pushed republicans over the top. They needed 51 seats to gain control. This morning, two seats are still undecided. Youre looking at the makeup of the new senate right here. And the new Senate Majority leader is republican mitch mcconnell. He turned back a democratic challenge in kentucky to win reelection. The gop is also expected to pad its majority in the house to near historic levels. Now, president obama said he wants to sit down with congressional leaders after the election. The white house said invitations have gone out for a meeting on friday. The president said he wants both parties to plan a way forward. We have all of the results from the races in this area online at nbc10. Com. Got another mild morning, but there are a few changes. Clouds, they are on the increase today. Should stay dry today, but not tomorrow. Were tracking some steady rainfall that will be moving into the area, and we could see some periods of heavier rain come tomorrow. This weekend, the chill is back in the air. The temperatures will come way down for saturday and sunday. Right now, 51 degrees in doylestown. Philadelphia with some clouds overhead. Its 52. And its 55 right now in cape may. Excuse me. We have a dry morning for center city, and the rest of the area, but we are watching some showers coming off to the north and west, and the clouds ahead of those showers, theyre already moving into the area. And we will see some breaks of sunshine, but its not going to be nice and clear for much of what we saw yesterday morning and into the early afternoon hours. Future weather hour by hour shows at 10 00 this morning, 62 degrees. You can see some sunshine in south jersey, but north and west, thats where the clouds are moving in. And the clouds will still be with us as we go into the afternoon. But in spite of the clouds and breaks of sunshine, well see the temperatures into the upper 60s by later this afternoon. So, youll still need your sunglasses at times, but not your umbrella, not today. 65 to 68 this afternoon. Another mild day with winds out of the west to 12 miles an hour. But rainfall is on the way. The extended future weather when i come back in less than ten minutes to show you the timing of its arrival. 11 minutes after 4 00 now. And hey, we know were not the only ones who work at this early hour. Those overnight Construction Projects are still often out on the road, and if youre headed out, you may want to be aware of whats going on there. Jillian mele has a look at everything happening. Youre exactly right, chris. We have overnight construction blocking all lanes on the northbound side of route 202 between paoli pike and route 322. This is because of some of that overnight construction. Meantime, take boot road. Thats your best bet. It is scheduled to be out there until about 5 00. Elsewhere, we have some construction on the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound just past virginia drive. We have two lanes blocked in that area, but its really not slowing things down right now because youll notice in that area, the average speeds about 62 miles an hour. Were seeing speeds in the mid50s on roads like 422 and the blue route this morning. So, for the most part, its a quiet start. Were accidentfree, but we just have to get through some of the construction zones that are still out there right now. No construction on route 1 in delaware. Lets start with u. S. Senate and a big win for senator cory booker, who defeated jeff bell by a wide margin, 56 of the vote. This is bookers first Senate Reelection bid, a year after winning that seat in a special election. He took the seat following the death of senator frank lautenberg. Booker stood hand in hand with his mother on stage last night in newark. During his victory speech, he thanked the residents of new jersey and promised to fight for them in washington. Now, also in south jersey, republican congressman Frank Lobiondo will represent the 2nd district in the u. S. House for an 11th term, beating out the son of his predecessor, bill hughes jr. Lobiondo says his top priority is securing money to retrain workers affected by the Atlantic City casino crisis. He says trying to extend longterm Unemployment Benefits to help those workers could be difficult, since the Unemployment Rate is falling nationwide but is rising in new jersey. So, when i approach my colleagues about the need for us to have the help here, they look at me and shake their head, because they dont have the same challenges. And in order for that to pass, i need the entire congress to be able to do that. Congressman lobiondo is also working with local and state legislators to move Atlantic City forward. He says it wont be easy or fast, but eventually will yield great benefits. Heres a look at another highprofile race in south jersey. Former Philadelphia Eagle garry cobb lost to Donald Norcross for the district 1 seat in the house, 51 for norcross there. And in the itrd district, tom mcarthur, a retired insurance executive won over aimee belgard. Tracy davidson, nbc 10 news. The nbc 10 investigators spent election day looking into some problems that some voters had at the polls. The nonpartisan Watchdog Committee of 70 says it got about 100 phone calls from philadelphia voters, most to do with confusion over polling locations, and some voters also encountered a language barrier. Philadelphia precincts do offer interpreters for Asian Americans and native spanish speakers, but there were some complaints that not all chinese dialects were covered. If they dont speak english well or at all, theyre not going to understand the sample ballot. And even if they can get assistance in the voting booth, people feel frustrated because they want to participate in voting, and they cant. And listen to this, the philadelphia d. A. Office is planning to investigate a complaint against a unionbacked Political Action committee, pennsylvania working families sent out a flier with information including the wrong polling place to 30,000 registered voters. If that was done intentionally, its a violation of the state election code. 4 17 now. A man is in Critical Condition this morning after being shot four times outside a gas station in germantown. Skyforce10 was over the sonoco at germantown avenue near washington lane around 4 30 yesterday. No one has been arrested in that case. And police tell us an ak47style weapon may have been used in a murder in philadelphias juniata neighborhood yesterday afternoon. Skyforce10 was over i street around 3 00 p. M. This white van crashed into the Temple University school of medicine on north broad street around 8 00 last night. One person was trapped inside the van and was taken to temple hospital. A person in another car was also hurt. Neither of their injuries appears to be lifethreatening. Now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. Another day with temperatures in the 50s is a really nice start and virtually no wind. Just a light breeze blowing at the airport. Clouds are overhead, however. Those clouds will be increasing during the day today. 52 degrees right now in philadelphia. Very close to yesterdays temperature. Wind just at 6 miles an hour. Its out of the westsouthwest. Dry at the shore, but rain is on the way, and the first rain drops may appear later tonight. 51 in doylestown, trenton and wrightstown. Wilmington has dropped down to 49 degrees, and its 49 in lafayette hill, 40s and 50s to start with. Collegeville is at 46, while eagleville is 53 degrees. And its down into the 40s for gilbertsville and pottstown this morning. So, theres a bit of a chill in the air, but nowhere near the normal low temperatures, which are in the 30s and low 40s. Radar is completely clear this morning, but were watching a line of very light showers. We could see a few of these showers in the pocono mountains this morning, but they are going to fizzle as they move in. You can see future weather showing at 7 00 this morning, clear of allentown and berks county. Its off to the north and west. And then they thin out. Well get some breaks of sunshine during the day, but the clouds will stay with us, even into the evening hours. And its during the evening, later evening hours, that well likely see the first rain drops pushing into our region. Thats 10 00 tonight. And then overnight tonight, some steadier rain moving in from south jersey and delaware to northeast and eastern pennsylvania. Thats 4 00 tomorrow morning. The rain will be falling. The future weather and the latest temperatures when i come back in less than ten minutes time. It is 4 20 and time for an early look at the highways and byways out there. Nbc 10s first alert traffic reporter jillian mele has a look at traffic. Good morning, chris. Looks like that construction cleared off of route 202. The northbound side was blocked off between paoli pike and route 322, but crews are heading away from the scene. So, 202 northbound has been reopened at this point. This is 76 at university avenue. You can see things are very quiet out there in both directions. Were not reporting any accidents on 76 this morning, so thats a little bit of good news for drivers. Heading into new jersey, we have some construction. 295 southbound, the route 42 offramp. We have the right lane blocked on that ramp. Then were also following some road work in audubon. Black horse pike southbound just past nicholson road. The left lane is blocked and is expected to be blocked until about 6 00 a. M. Chris . Well, after last winter, when we saw near record demand for electricity and gas and some longterm Power Outages due to storms, peco says its ready for whatever this coming winter brings our way. Hopefully, nothing like we saw last winter. The company has completed its review of its electric grid, which includes more than 22,000 miles of cable above and below ground. Peco has also filled its Natural Gas Storage facilities and replaced a series of Gas Pipelines with new piping. Now in a statement, pecos president and ceo said as we prepare for colder weather, we encourage our customers to do the same by inspecting heating equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation. So, heres a checklist to help you prepare around the house. First of all, you should clean all of the air vents around the house. If possible, install storm windows and doors, if you dont have those. This is also key, too, in keeping out those drafts, be sure to check or replace the weather stripping and caulking around your windows and doors, and install sealers behind electrical outlets.
