hands of police tonight, and the investigation continues right here on the block and around the house where this all began. 25-year-old eric rosado gonzales in custody, after a manhunt and police operation gone awry. >> master state police and boston police were involved in a joint investigation here on newburg street. at that time, they encountered the suspect. >> reporter: police say gonzales from dorchester and another person open fire and two officers fired back. >> all of the sudden i hear pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: thankfully, no one was shot and one suspect was arrested immediately. >> at this time he is going to be charged with assault with intent to murder. >> reporter: but, he fled. >> next thing you know there were three or four cops on foot they went through my neighbor's backyard and then through the apartment as well. >> reporter: that's when law enforcement is formed this neighborhood, cops and police dogs scattered belgrade avenue. the commuter rail shutdown as law enforcement is searched the train track. as it grew dark, s.w.a.t. teams moved in canvassing the neighborhood and the police helicopter looked down from above. just before 10, the news, he was captured. >> i apologized for the inconvenience neighborhood but we wanted to make sure it was safe. >> reporter: police say rosado- gonzales will be charged with assault with intent to murder. we know that one officer suffered minor injuries during the whole ordeal and at this point, police are not revealing the nature of their operation. live in roslindale, louisa moller, wbz news. breaking night now, -- breaking right now, hurricane the deadly storm reaching haiti and now cuba. the latest track shows it moving up the east coast. >> if you think you are going to evacuate do it today. >> the hurricane is blamed for at least 11 deaths in the caribbean. >> the big question for us, days from now, will it hit new england? take a look at the video from nasa. you see the size of the strongest storm to hit 80 an eric fisher with the latest. i know you got a new model. >> the 11:00 advisory from the hurricane center, it is weakening, interacting with land on haiti and cuba. that is expected to be temporary, this is still a category four hurricane. the environment is favorable for it to get stronger as it moves over the bahamas during top of the storm. all of those areas in the maroon color are hurricane warnings across the bahamas. justin not 11, hurricane warnings posted for florida including areas north of miami through west palm beach. hurricane watches extending up toward daytona beach. certainly a very close path, expected to move its way just parallel to the coast. it may wobble just inland, but you're going to have a major hurricane on the doorstep of florida. that is late thursday through friday as it moves along the coast. it almost perfectly follows the coast of the united states, up through georgia, into south carolina and north carolina early this weekend. i mentioned earlier tonight i did not agree with the hurricane cohen around 5:00, the new cone takes new england out. i think that trend further to the south is the one we will be watching. right now, a well offshore tracked. we could get rain from the system this weekend. we will talk about that in a few minutes. >> people from florida to the carolinas are filling up, evacuate coastal areas. leah martin picks up our coverage. >> reporter: it left a trail of destruction in haiti, where the destruction will rise and right now, matthew is lashing cuba. hurricane matthew pounded haiti with torrential rains at 145 mile per hour winds at down. the category four storm turned roads into rushing rivers, snapped powerlines, and ripped trees from the ground. united nations says at least 10,000 people were evacuated to shelters on the impoverished the storm now heating cuba where thousands were urged to move to higher ground. forecasters predict matthew could hit southeast florida by late thursday. south carolina's governor is ordering an estimated 1.1 million people to move inland. >> we have decided that we will evacuate all coastal communities. starting tomorrow. our goal is to make sure that you basically get 100 miles away from the coast. stocking up on supplies. >> i got some batteries, i got some gas canisters for generators. and a couple of headlamps to put on our heads if the power goes out. >> reporter: motorists waiting in long lines to fill their gas tanks in south florida. >> i went through katrina, and pretty much, see the devastation it can cause. i'm not taking any chances. >> reporter: residents in the storm's path are being last three days. and states of emergency have been declared in both florida and south carolina. lisa? >> the united nations says hurricane matthew is to blame for the worst humanitarian crisis in haiti since the devastating earthquake 6 years ago. julie loncich picks up our coverage now. a lot of people have been trying to help haiti recover. >> reporter: there are many late hour, well before the true scope of the devastation is known. hurricane matthew washed away the only bridge linking a vital hospital in southwest haiti to the main highway. isolating hundreds of staff and patients at the hospital. >> there are not many options. we don't know the extent. i think that is fair. >> reporter: thousands of miles away in newton, the foundation that started the hospital is working around the clock to gain access and send in suppli. the hospital is now a 15 to 20 foot river retching -- rushing through. the nicu is totally full of babies. we have mothers who will be delivering. >> reporter: president and ceo connor schapiro flew to the devastation to do what he could. >> we knew the devastation and flooding would be horrible. we prepared as best we could but this is difficult. monitoring conditions and checking in with many relatives around port-au-prince. he just returned from haiti last weekend and says preparation for a category four hurricane there could not be more different than the preparation that is happening here. >> even the units coming, you tell people to move shelters. well, there is no food. there is no electricity. there is no paper. even in a house, where you are telling them to go is not any better. >> reporter: back to the hospital, connor schapiro says his staff stockpiles and should have enough supplies, food and water for the next few days but time there is certainly of the essence. julie loncich, wbz news. >> both on the air and online, wbz is tracking hurricane matthew as it moves toward the east coast. get the latest information by downloading the cbs boston weather app to your smart phone or tablet. only debate, a chance for tim kaine and mike tends to stand up for their ticket and introduce themselves before the biggest audience of their lives. this face-off was full of attacks. wbz's political analyst jon keller is live in the studio with us. who got the better of this one?
