this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. eveng. scott it off i'm maurice dubois. donald trump is coming to the end of the worst week of his campaign. national polls show hillary clinton has opened a seven-point lead. have a look at the end of the conventions they were just about tied. in just one up, he's down after one misstep after another. now, keep in mind the election is astate battle f 270 electoral votes, and it will be decided in these 11 states that could go either way. two are on trump's schedule today. here's dean reynolds. >> reporter: as a chaotic week of political blunders and sagging poll numbers drew to a close, donald trump patted himself on the back. >> i've been told by so many people that know me-- under pressure, donald, that's when you do the best. >> reporter: he was in iowaon an states that id twice in general elections a states whose republican primaries ted cruz won this year. so trump has work to do. >> and if you don't like me, that's okay. vote for pence because it's the same thing. >> reporter: but if today is any measure, he won't get much help. neither of iowa's republican senators joined him on the stage at his rally in des moines this afternoon. jonie ernst and chuck grassley were worse in wisconsin where the state assembly's republican leader said he is embarrassed by his party's presidential nominee, and where other top g.o.p. officials will not be attending tonight's rally in green way. speaker paul ryan pron johnson, and scott walker found someplace else to be. ryan sounded almost resigned to presidency. if we fail to protect our majority in congress we could be handing hillary clinton a blank check." among all the accounts of a campaign in disarray, there are signs trump may be changing if only a bit. remember the video he has been talking about by days, the one he said was shot by iranians and shows a humiliating the ayatollahs? >> and the plane coming in and the money coming off, i g right? >> reporter: well, he said today he was mistaken, that it showed hostages being released in geneva and no payments. and tonight in green bay, maurice, after weathering days of criticism from republicans for refusing to endorse paul ryan for re-election, donald trump is expected to do just that. >> dubois: dean reynolds in green bay tonight. hillary clinton says she did not mean to imply that f.b.i. director james comey vouches for the truth of her public interview sunday with fox's chris wallace. here was clinton today. >> director comey had said that my answers in my f.b.i. interview were truthful. that's really the bottom line he interview and in many other occasions over the past months that what i told the f.b.i., which he said was truthful, is consistent with what i have said publicly. it, and for that i, you know, will try to clarify. >> dubois: clinton was endorsed bay by michael morell, the former number two at the sky. he said clinton is highly qualified to be commander in chief and will keep the nation safe. as for trump, morell said he is not only unqualified for the job but he may well pose a threat t. for cbs news. anthony salvanto is our cbs news director of elections, and, anthony, big shift here in the polling numbers. what's behind it? >> well, you know, we've actually seen the numbers move away from donald trump over the the course of the week. we had in ourllclinton up seven monday. some suggestion over the course of the week that lead got even bigg. on the democratic side, hillary clonsolidated her basets better with liberals than on the republican side, donald trump is so he still has some work to do to match her with their bases. >> dubois: now, those are national numbers. we know the election is all about the states. bagstates shog us? >> right. we identify 11 decide this election, places like wisconsin. what we have seen over the last week is in those places, too, the polls are starting to shift toward hillary clinton. but there's some indications that even reliably republican arizona, could start to become competitive, and that would force him tota defending reliably republican territory, too. >> dubois: now, to those who are tempted to call the election here in august, you say?othing,, permanent in august. >> dubois: another anthony salvanto. thanks so much. >> thank you. >> dubois: some other numbers that could figure to presidential election. that the economy created jobs in july, the second and the unemployment rate held steady at 4.9%. bot. news gave wall street a the dow rose 191 points. there is tension in chicago following the release today of s before and after police fatally. jericka duncan is following this, and we caution you, some ha hear g jaguar...
