campaign 2016 today. polls will open in the primary election in half an hour at 6:30. the big races include president, u.s. senate, governor and so many more. wbtv's mark davenport is joining us live outside a local polling place so mark, what do voters need to know before heading to the polls today? >> reporter: john, first things first, when polls open and when they close. like you mentioned 6:30 this morning, in a half hour they will open for you early birds. if you want to get there before you go to work, that is no. 1 on the list. get there early this morning. also polls close at 7:30 tonight, so you have more than 12 hours to vote today when you're getting off work you have extra time in the afternoon to vote. 7:30 is when polls close. next thing, bring the voter i.d., we have been talking about this the past few week, if you don't have a driver's license, there is other options. you need to have one of these. passport, military i.d., out of state driver's license as long as voter registered within the state within the last 90 days. if you don't have the driver's license you need to bring a photo i.d. when you leave the house make sure take you that with you. also planning to come after work you can get a head start by scanning sample ballot, i pulled these off the board of elections website, get ready to vote when you pull these off the website this morning. you can choose who you want to have go there on your ballots, both democrat and republican, get in and out of the polling place. for your polling place if you don't know where you're going, we have that link on our website, wbtv.com, a lot of good things happening today. we have got movement behind me here, poll workers showing up all the voting booths set up here, so things are starting in 30 be great again that is what it is. >> john: police removed several protester from the event. six people given written citations. bernie sanders rallied supporters at pnc music pavilion in sort charlotte. pavilion in north charlotte. >> our job is to create the best educated society in the world, not the country that has more >> at the grady cole center, hillary clinton spoke to supporters for 30 minutes. touched on a list of topics including equal pay for women, police mistrust and gun violence. she reminded the crowd to get out and vote. >> north carolina has a really important role the victim said two men pulled up in a car, tried to rob him and shot him in the leg. he is expected to recover, no arrests have been made. >> john: new information, police killed in concord. police say 21-year-old columbus simmons was shot before 8:00 last night. it happened in the area of griffin circle off lincoln street. a large crowd was seen running from the area after gunshots were heard. simmons taken to carolinas northeast where he later died. the investigation is ongoing. two people found dead in a home in catawba county. this was the scene as investigators searched the home on rest home road north of claremont. a relative had gone to check on them. it is too early to say what they think happened. >> christine: the push to protect charlotte-mecklenburg's neighborhood schools is growing. leaders in matthews voting to separate from the school district saying it is just too big. wbtv's ashton pellom is live this morning with more, so ashton, tell folks at home how this vote went down. >> reporter: good morning, christine. that was a unanimous vote last night. listening to parents and they are voicing concerns over the student assignment plan. town officials pass had resolution demanding the board of education guarantee every child will attend a school close to home, close to their parent's job or parent's choice of magnet school. resolution says the town will work with legislators that split up c, mr. s or cms or have matthews form a school district of their own. >> i'm absolutely in favor of the separation from charlotte-mecklenburg schools, if they don't listen to what we as parents and family members and community leaders have said. >> reporter: leaders at cms stress they have not discussed the idea of busing just yet or yet at all, in that student assignment plan. the mayor of matthews says the town needs to look over things and see the cost and consequences if they were to break away and start their own local school district. reporting live in >> john: looking ahead former charlotte mayor patrick cannon will be back in charlotte tomorrow to face a voter fraud charge. cannon is serving time in prison in west virginia for taking bribes while in office. prosecutors say he voted after his conviction leading to the voter fraud charge. as of right now, he is scheduled to be released from prison on the original conviction in january of 2017. >> christine: prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a justin sullivan killed 74 john clark, investigators said. clark was found bury in his front yard in morganton in 2014. sullivan planned to use the money he stole from clark to buy a rifle he planned to use to kill up to 1000 people in support of isis. he is set to go on trial for terrorism charges in october. no date set for the traffic on wbtv news this morning. >> christine: today is primary day in north carolina, polls just opened for voters to cast ballot in campaign 2016. we know the presidential primaries are the big talker but there are a few other races to watch impacting other state. governor pat mccrory is looking to win the republican gubernatorial primary against north carolina state representative robert brawley of mooresville. in the democratic gubernatorial primary, north carolina attorney general roy cooper faces off against durham native ken spaulding. voters will decide the senate seats where richard burr is seeking his third term and the state attorney general position is up for grabs with cooper running for governor. >> john: right now, voters are already casting ballots at polling places across north carolina. wbtv's mark davenport is joining us live from a polling precinct, this is at covenant presbyterian mark, many people out there right now? >> reporter: the door just opened a minute or two, 10, 15 people, the first question when they got up to the line is photo i.d. we have been talking about it all morning long, couple weeks before this as well. you have to have photo i.d., driver's license, people are loading in here at covenant presbyterian this morning, john. >> john: have you had a chance to speak with any of the voters, what are they saying about the elections? >> reporter: i haven't gotten a chance to speak with anybody, we'll talk to them on the way out finding out their ideas and thoughts about the election this time around. i have been talking to poll workers, they are expecting a big turnout. >> we had the south carolina primary record turnout, early voting here in mecklenburg county record turnout. because north carolina moved up the primary date, any indication turnout today? >> john, i think so, that is what the poll workers were saying, since we have moved up from may up until march the delegates do matter, we'll have people coming out they think their vote counts and always does count, they will come out to the polls, seeing a good line this morning and i want to show you one more time around on the inside of covenant presbyterian. a lot of people out early voting. with early voting that was all last week, we had a record here in the state, almost 700,000 people came out to early vote and we will have more today as well. we'll be here covering it all for you on wbtv. reporting live, mark davenport, wbtv on your side. >> john: the ballot in north carolina will have an important bond question for you to answer, connect nc bond would fund projects all over north carolina including new buildings at colleges, water and sewer upgrades and improvements to state parks. will mean two billion dollar in new debt. require tax increase because interest rates are low and the state is paying off existing debt quickly. >> christine: voter in four other states will head to the polls. the results will have an impact on each party's nomination. in total more than 1000 delegates are at stake in missouri, north carolina, ohio. 367 of those delegates decide forward the republicans today and 691 for the democrats. it is important to note florida states. they are today's big prizes. right now donald trump is about a third of the way to the nomination with 460 of the 1237 delegates needed. ted cruz is in second, 90 delegates behind. followed by marco rubio and ohio governor john kasich. on the democratic side, hillary clinton has more than half of the 2382 delegates she needs with bernie sanders well behind. campaign with a crime. they were considering charging with inciting a riot. a man was punched in the face while being escorted out, sucker punched. john mcgraw is facing several charges including forecast. no chance for any rain, the rain that came through long gone. what about other neighborhoods, gastonia, 81, hickory, 78, monroe, 81, close to 80 salisbury and china grove, total sunshine in the forecast for today. tomorrow, a little bit of cloud cover, we have a weak system that will be coming in and i say weak, won't bring a lot of rain first off high pressure in command, for today, lots of sunshine. turn our attention to the next frontal system, has showers with it, there is a chance you get a shower or two in the mountains tomorrow. rest of us watch how the moisture dries up as it comes east of the mountains, going to see a decent amount of sunshine and still in the low 80s. that is as we head in wednesday. by thursday, big area of high pressure dominating this is a this is a trough of low pressure that is going to replace the nice warm ridge that we had the last week-and-a-half, and as it does, this front will stall to the south and there may be an area of low pressure that develops and rides along the front over the upcoming weekend. may be just far enough east we escape the heavy rain, a chance for rain saturday late into sunday. as we go through tuesday, wednesday, thursday, we're still dry but notice on thursday, it is 75. that is above average by 10 degrees, thereafter, in the 60s and even in the 50s as we head toward the weekend. cool getting down in the 30s. as far as precipitation goes, i don't see much of a chance here outside of a mountain shower the next couple afternoons, we're dry, right through until we get to late saturday night and sunday. just a very small chance. yesterday i was concerned that lowe might be closer to us, the models are starting to come together now, indicating perhaps this is far enough out to sea we get a
