Dirty problem in rowan county is getting a unique solution thanks to Sheriff Deputies who are willing to give up time off. Trash on roadsides has been piling up. The sheriff noticed near his home. So he is working on a plan that and fight cancer. Wbtvs David Whisenant is live along a highway in western rowan county. David, that does look a little like messy work but how does this help fight cancer . Well, you can sponsor the deputies doing the trash pick up and the money goes to the American Cancer Society and look around me theres trash everywhere and this is 150. A lot of folks have noticed this has been piling up and complaining about it and so someone came up with the way to do something about it. A lot of debris on the road, yes. Both sides. Hd thomas tries to keep his yard neat but living on the road makes it a challenge. It keeps you busy. You see cans and paper stuff in the side ditches and everything. One neighbor noticed it, too. See it everyday and that area is pretty congested with traffic. And therefore more garbage. Several members of the Sheriffs Office noticed so they came up with the idea of letting deputies volunteer to collect trash on their days off. They can get sponsors who will donate money to go to the American Cancer Society and relay for life. Our folks do not have a lot of money but big hearts. The response has been good but still many ask the sheriff why dont they let the inmates do it . Its not as easy as it sounds. The difference in a local jail and the department of corrections is those individuals have been sentenced most of our prisoners are pretrial and it changes the rules and there are feeding obligations and bathrooms. And then we have to Pullman Power from somewhere to manage the inmates. That is why we used our deputies to volunteer. The money can be turned in for relay for life in may. And if you are one of those neighbors. It is a mess to see it on both sides of the road. Any help is appreciated. And the sheriff points out that there is a bigger job than picking up the trash. He says there has to be a way to change the mindset that says it is ok to ride on the road and chuck your garbage out the window. David whisenant wbtv on your side. What a good idea.
