mostly sunny skies, a much milder finish than over the weekend up to 67 degrees. seven day planner has warmer weather but also the mention of rain, have that in a couple minutes. you're never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic on wbtv news this morning. here is chris, first alert traffic. >> chris: first alert traffic this morning is sponsored by toyota of north charlotte. we'll start with a live look if you're heading out the door early after 5:00 a.m., this is 77, clanton road, volume light and again looking pretty good for the early morning commuters on a monday morning. rock hill to uptown, 21 minutes, 65 miles an hour. coming from concord, 19 minutes, 64 miles an hour. and lake norman, southbound at 15, with an average speed, 67-miles-per-hour there. looking at the overall map, 485 looks good to the west and out to the east and pretty much around the perimeter, 77, 85 also no problems. providence road, independence, everything running fairly smoothly early on for monday that is a check of the commute, guys backs to you. >> john: breaking news in union county, troopers with the north carolina high pressure highway patrol say a driver was killed in a crash on north ridge road. happened before 11:30 last night. the driver lost control, hit a tree and overturned. the name of the victim will be release when family is notified. >> christine: we're following breaking news out of west charlotte this morning, an amtrak train with 160 passengers on board hits an suv, no one was hurt. this happened around 1:00 this morning near old dowd road. ashton pellom is get us details, do we know anything about the driver of the suv? >> reporter: good morning, christine. cmpd has not released too much information about the driver. they tell me the suv was unoccupied at the time of the crash. let's take you to video i shot when i first arrived out there on scene. this morning their crescent line train that goes from new orleans to new york city hit an unoccupied suv left on the tracks on old dowd road. officials say there were 160 passenger aboard the train and no injuries to the riders or crew members. after crews removed the suv from under the train, passengers continued to their stop here in charlotte and arrived around 4:00 this morning. that is nearly three hours after their scheduled arrival time. i spoke with a couple riders upset with the inconvenience of the incident. >> it was frustrating, man. imagine being in a seat for 16 hours, not being able to move. and being claustrophobic. >> very annoying after an hour-and-a-half sitting there. >> reporter: just frustration from the passengers aboard the train this morning. again, cmpd is still investigating and trying to find the owner of that suv, as soon as they update us, we'll update wbtv.com. reporting live in charlotte, ashton pellom, wbtv on your side. >> christine: thanks, ashton. >> john: campaign 2016 turns to charlotte. >> christine: hillary clinton's husband will be in the queen city today pushing for support for his wife. on the republican side, donald trump will be in concord. mark davenport has the story. mark, take us through the schedule this week. >> reporter: christine, it will be a big day in north carolina today, you both have donald trump and bill clinton trying to capture the early votes here in our state. i want to give you that schedule like you're talking about. bill clinton will be here campaigning for hillary across the state. first, will be in raleigh, then on to greensboro, then a stop in the queen city at 4:15 this afternoon at johnson c. smith university. that is where i am right now. the goal for them is to wrangle donald trump will make a stop in north carolina today as well at lunch time, he will be at the cabarrus arena and events center in concord. 23% of all north carolina votes in 2012 were early votes, that is why both these campaigns want to be out here and get those early voters. you can vote early all the way up until friday. two days over that weekend you don't vote in early voting but then you will be voting again on the 15th if you don't get out early. that is what the campaigns are doing today, get you some more looks later this afternoon when those campaigns do show up here in north carolina. reporting live, mark davenport, wbtv on your side. >> john: the democrats running for president facing off in michigan. the debate comes two days before voters head to the polls for michigan's democratic primary. the candidates sparring over an issue important to people in michigan, the 2009 bail out of the auto industry. he voted against the money that ended up saving the auto industry. >> if you are talking about the wall street bail out, where some of your friends destroyed this economy through -- >> you know -- >> excuse me, i'm talking. >> clinton is leading in the polls. it gets a little nasty there, doesn't it, testy. a man accused of nearly dragging a lincoln county detective during a traffic stop this weekend is scheduled to be in court today. authorities say 52-year-old harvey eugene boyd had cocaine in his car and refused to get out. when a detective tried to unlock the door, boyd rolled up the window with the detective's arm inside. boyd led them on a chase through gaston county. >> christine: may be hard to think about but governor mccrory declared this severe weather week state-wide. a reminder about tornadoes, flash flooding and thunderstorms. cases of flash flooding and nearly 550 severe storms left more than $12 million in damage. it is the reason we always say have a weather plan and an emergency kit ready. we are just getting started this this morning here on wbtv. coming up, former first lady nancy reagan dead at the age of 94. coming up, how she is being remembered here in the carolinas. >> john: brody o'connell live in the alert center. >> brody: we'll talk about how nancy reagan is being remembered. a hostage situation in australia, getting new details, a developing situation right now, we'll keep you updated throughout the morning. stick around we'll have more news in a few minutes. >> john: we're about to go to break, before we do, a quick check of first alert weather and traffic here we have 42 degrees in charlotte right now, 30 in boone, below freezing, 28 morganton, 37 chester, 34 rock hill, here is a live look at the brookshire freeway here, john traffic is light this morning. remember, you're never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic on wbtv news this morning. it is eight minutes after 5:00. loss of former first lady nancy reagan. died of congestive heart failure at her home in california yesterday, she was 94 years old. a steady stream of mourners stopped at the reagan presidential library sunday to leave flowers and pay respects. she will be buried alongside her husband. funeral arrangements are being worked out. remembering nancy reagan. he knew them more than 50 years. in a statement it says one of her most wonderful qualities was steadfast and loyal support for her husband. she was an extraordinary first lady. let's go to brody o'connell who continues to watch reaction this morning on the death of nancy reagan, right, brody? >> brody: incredible. that same sentiment you just heard from the reverend billy graham being repeated by so many people from so many different walks of life. i saw this one, larry king, who had the opportunity to know and interview nancy reagan in the past. he tweeted out still very saddened by the passing of nancy reagan a dear friend, i'll share my fondest memories i had with her throughout the week. looking forward to what he has to say. paul ryan tweeting out nancy reagan loved her husband and country this, was her service, her way of giving back. john mccain posted a nice photo of those two saying that us all of graciousness, loyalty and dignity. you get the same feeling of the admiration people had to be her. lastly, not just world leaders, in the u.s. but across the globe. benjamin netanyahu, condolences to the reagan family on the passing of nancy reagan. will be remembered as a great friend of israel. i look forward to announces he no longer needs cancer treatment. he shared the news with his sunday school class that he teaches in plains, georgia. you may remember mr. carter was declared cancer-free a few months the details first from the alert center. this is a homicide investigation, cmpd out there call for service came in before 3:00 this morning. i do have a map we can show you to give you an idea where this is taking place. so the investigation started at park fairfax drive. let me get the map up, this is where the investigation started at park fairfax drive. i have it pinned out on google maps. officers responded to the scene for a call, they didn't find anybody there. talked to neighbors and clear the scene. a short time later they got a call that somebody had showed up at carolinas medical center and apparently they were severely wounded with a gunshot wound. upon arrival, officers went to the hospital, they were notified that the male had been driven to the er, was indeed shot and passed away a short time after his arrival there at carolinas medical center. the identity of the victim not being released right now, detectives are searching the area for witness, i'm not seeing anything about arrests that have been made, so clearly and ongoing active investigation, throughout the morning. john and christine, back to you. >> christine: brody keep us posted, thank you. new this morning, union pension fund is pledging $25 million in loans to help solve the water crisis in flint, michigan. flint's mayor says the union labor life insurance company will provide low cost loans for replacing lead water pipes. they would boost the $55 million fast start program. you remember lead leaked in the drinking water after the city of flint switched the water source about two years ago. >> john: governor -- michigan governor rick snyder is responding to calls he should resign because of the flint water crisis. both democratic presidential candidates, bernie sanders and ahead. high pressure dominating. this will be like the rock of gibraltar, won't allow the moisture in the middle part of the country to sneak in. on the edge so we'll get a few clouds from time to time and gulf moisture, but overall, this is going to be a partly to mostly sunny week ahead, with very warm conditions, starting today. today will be in the 60s, will be a ramp up, but wait until the middle part of the week forecast. metro school camera, dry charlotte, our current temperature is at 42 degrees, most of the outlying areas are running cooler than this. mostly in the 30s and a few 20s showing up. 29 boone, 28 morganton, 33 in shelby at freezing, albermarle, wadesboro, 34 concord, 30 in lincolnton, 34 in rock hill. in the mountains, upper 50s to about 60. this may be pushing it around boone. southerly breezes you will be warming up. well in the 60s on under mostly sunny skies, taylorsville, wilkesboro no chance of rain. 67 salisbury, albermarle monroe, lincolnton, charlotte, south we're well in the 60s from chesterfield and patrick, cheraw, rock hill. heading to the game tonight, again, minnesota is in town to take on the hot hornets, 58 degrees, tip-off temperature not bad. overnight lows in the 40s. high s tomorrow in the 70s. that is where we're headed with the warm weather poised if to poised to come 67 today, and then well in the 70s, even in the weekend by the weekend we will look at greater rain chances as eventually the pattern is forecast to break down a little bit. again, nothing is set in stone, the timing could be off a little bit, a long way out but i'm here to tell you we have very low rain chances between now and friday but as we head toward the weekend chances for rain go up. not saying there won't be some sunshine but scattered showers and morning, temperatures mostly in the 30s. with the big area of high pressure over eastern sections of the carolinas, that is governing the weather, we will have a very very nice stretch of weather going forward. we will wind up getting quite warm over the next several days starting this afternoon getting in the 60s, an improvement over the last several days. clear skies out there, excellent visibility, our metro school camera in center city, if that is your destination, wind up in the 60s. starting off at 42 in charlotte. be mindful, 42 in charlotte is the warmest anywhere on the map. 34 hickory, rock hill, 37 monroe, salisbury, gastonia. 29 in boone. the forecast then for today, look for plenty of sunshine, little cloudiness from time to time, not bad at all. haven't had very much
