Have heard a helicopter overhead in North Charlotte this evening. Cmpd officers responded to shots being fired near poll being and white road. Police say a group of more than a dozen men were playing poker. According to investigators, one person had a gun, took it outside and began firing the shots. He then took off into the woods. Nobody was hurt. Police have since cleared the scene. No word tonight if a suspect is in custody. As we inch closer to tuesdays primary election here in north carolina, voters in big numbers took advantage of the last day of early voting. Democratic and republican president ial candidates have drawn a lot of attention. So it should be no surprise that voters in mechlenburg county turned out in very, very big numbers, more than in previous years. Kristen joins us live from the news room with more details. Tell us about the turnout today. Yes, steve, mechlenburg county has not seen the turnout like we have seen today and this periods in the previous three president ial primaries. With how much buzz some have created its no surprise to voters. Usually the lines not so long. I like to not face the crowds so much. On saturday, voters who usually early vote were met with a larger than normal crowd during the early Voting Period for you to days primary election. It was a record for early voting in the county. Compare that to the more than 33,000 during the early Voting Period for the 2012 primaries. It also beats the turnout in 20 turnout 2008 and 2004. Theres buzz surrounding some president ial candidates. Well, trump is the biggest noise maker. I want to support our president ial candidate, hillary clinton. Not only have they created buzz. Some say they have created a divide between republican and democratic voters. Its kind of like fractured they arent very supportive of the other side. If early voting numbers are any indication, this could mean a higher turnout for tuesdays primary as well. According to the most recent data from the board of elections, Voter Registration in mechlenburg county has increased by almost 2500. Another possible explanation is that there, too, is a divide within both the democrat and republican partys. I am a republican but there are too many rhinos in washington. So i do not like our current senator who caves in. Some people want to stick with obamas policies and some people want to be more radical and more left. Reporter despite the fractures within both parties, voters are making sure they have their voices heard. The primary election will be tuesday. Polls open at 6 30 a. M. And will close at 7 30 p. M.
