>> well, jennifer, live on glen arm avenue. the officer lives on the block. there is a patrol car in front of his home now. and investigators spent hours here today. trying to determine exactly what happened. during that shooting. >> it happened monday afternoon. baltimore city police respond to a shooting one of their own. investigators say the off duty officer, who was not in uniform, was at the door of his home, in the 3600 block of glen arm avenue, when a man approached, and put a gun to the officer's back. police say the suspect forced the officer inside, told him to lie on the floor. >> at that point, he was able to get his service weapon, identify himself as a police officer and then short chase ensued. >> the chase ended near gary galloway's home, neighborhood watch captain. he heard gun fire and looked out the window. >> guy is running. well, the one being chased was running hard. the other guy walking. walking. >> investigators say the officer shot the man, several times. >> police believe the suspect was shooting too. and investigators recovered several shell casings, that they say came from the suspect gun. >> but galloway said he only saw the officer shooting. >> he was just walking and fine. >> and never saw the suspect with a gun. >> one time he put his hands up. hands up. >> police say they did recover the suspect's weapon and there is no question, bullets were flying. >> they hit a woman's home. >> then i heard something go through like the wall. i thought wait a minute something is hitting my wall. and i ran downstairs and saw bullet holes in the wall. and there is like a whole bunch of dust on the chairs. and ricochet in the ceiling, and oh, my gosh. >> well no one hurt inside the home. meantime police say the man, who has not been identified, has a lengthy criminal record that includes breaking an entering and assaulting an officer. >> we're live in northeast baltimore, keith daniels, fox 45 news at 10:00. >> city police are investigating four murders that happened in just 24 hours. one murder hatched yesterday around noon at reisterstown road and cold spring lane in northwest baltimore. the most recent murder happened at midnight in the 500 block of presstman street. man shot lying in the street. two other murders early morning hours sunday. well there has been 160 murders so far this year in baltimore. there were 157 at this time last year. . >> it is a story you heard first on fox. baltimore city police force eliminate the auxilliary be unit. and now they want to know why. melinda roeder is live on the story. what can you tell us. >> city council passed a resolution calling on the police commissioner to answer some questions about the auxilliary unit and why so many officers are getting the boot. >> my biggest question is why are we turning away people that want to volunteer their time, to make our city better to make it safer. why? >> councilwoman belinda conaway has concerns about the auxilliary police. a year ago, more than 30 volunteers served in that unit. and now it has been reduced to about 10. and some former members say they are still not sure why. >> never gave us anything in writing. everything was word of mouth. >> investigative hearing, baltimore city. >> several of the volunteers attended a council meeting hoping for answers. police department spokesman tells us that several months ago it was discovered that some of the officers were involved in criminal activity. so they were all told to reapply for their positions, and go through a new screening process. >> four, or 5 times, they did record checks on us. and came up with nothing. nothing at all. >> winnie watts said her record is clean. but so far the attempts to be reinstateed to the unit have been ignored. >> i am waiting for a letter to say i am coming back or not. >> since the officers were not paid, they say there is little cost to the city. and unit performs valuable tasks like crowd control and security for police. >> they are not asking for accolades or payment. they just want to serve the community and make it better. >> so why do they do it? >>. >> spokesman for commissioner bealefield said he will meet with city council to address the questions. and that he does consider the auxilliary unit a valuable piece of the department. live tonight from city hall, melinda roeder, fox 45 news at 10:00. >> we have breaking news out of washington tonight. u.s. senate has voted to block funding to acorn. by a margin of 83 to seven. senate voted to deny housing and grant funding to the non-profit group that has offices here in baltimore and across the country. acorn received more than a million dollars in federal aid last year. and was eligible to compete for billons in stimulus money. well, the vote comes as another video surfaces of acorn workers giving tax advice to a person posing as a pimp, and another posing as a prostitute. from the same group that exposed similar conversations with workers in baltimore and washington d.c. this video released today, exposes workers in the brooklyn new york office. >> >>. >> well, later in the video acorn worker tells them to say the woman is a free-lanceer to help create credit lines and to open multiple bank accounts to avoid raising suspicion. >> the filmmaker that captured the acorn videos has come out to criticize how the story is being covered. james o'keefe posed as a pimp and her friend hanna giles posed as a prostitute. crime and justice reporter joy lepola looks closer at the likelihood of any legal action on either side of the issue. >> when acorn workers were captured on tape, giving what they thought were a pimp and prostitute advice on how to set up a brothel neither one flinched. in fact, the women went as far as giving james o'keefe and hanna giles advice on how to get a home loan through acorn without illegal activity being detected by the irs. >> as i sat there, i was like i cannot believe they are actually falling for this. and not necessarily falling for it, but what can we get them to say next. like what will they do next? you know to enable illegal activity. >> o'keefe said they conducted the undercover investigation because the main stream media was failing to hold the government accountable. criticism of news coverage that continues even now. >> shocking to me, that these outlets, like cnn, and baltimore sun, are covering for acorn. >> despite what the two captured on tape. attorneys say it may be o'keefe and giles that have gotten themselves into trouble. >> the persons that made the recordings, could be prosecuteed because they violated the criminal law. >> in maryland you cannot record someone's voice without their consent. steve allen practices law in the state. >> it is unlikely that you could prosecute the acorn workers, because you cannot use the tape recording of their voices against them. >> with calls for an investigation, we asked mayor sheila dixon, and governor martin o'malley their thoughts on the matter. >> and in both cases, we were told they had not seen the video. but the mayor did have this to say. >> we pulled a lot of support that we have given to acorn in the past. housing, funding them, that is not happening. >> acorn, an organization that appears many people are attempting to distance themselves from. joy lepola, fox 45 news at 10:00. >> and late last week, u.s. census bureau severed out its partnership with acorn. >> essex home destroyed by fire in 1400 block of ga lena road. took them an hour to get the flames under control. no one hurt. red cross is helping the victims with a place to stay tonight. >> execution date for a dc area sniper could be coming soon. john allen mohammed sentenced to death for killing diane myers, virginia prosecutors are asking a judge for november 9 execution date. myers was one of 10 people shot and killed in the 2002 sniper attacks that terrorized the dc region. mohammed was the master mind behind the sniper killings. >> maryland state police are looking for two sexual offenders, 31-year-old gary wayne smith of keymar, and 44-year-old walter howard hunger of westminster have not appeared for required registration, if you know where they are, call police. >> gorgeous sunny start to the week. >> what's in store for tomorrow, however? plan is a huge tax increase for every individual that does not purchase insurance. >> on the other side. >> people of america know that it is time for health care reform. >> health care for all. supports the president's plan. >> when there are 47 million people in america, without health care, all of us suffer. our premiums go up to cover the health care of the uninsured. >> north baltimore resident raspberry does not have health coverage. >> talk about health care for all. that's a good thing. that's a good way to everybody, i guess, to get what they need, as far as health coverage. >> but lobbying in annapolis. debbie mcwilliams argues otherwise. >> millions and millions of seniors, i am one of them, will end up dead, much sooner, and having the end of our lives much more pain. if half of its nuclear power business to a french company is under scrutiny by maryland's public service commission. plenty of questions are being raised tonight. john rydell explains. flush. >> it is he $4.5 billion deal that the service commission has been examining. electricity to france, wants to acquire half of constellation's nuclear business f approved, utility officials say it would give them the financial backing they need to construct a third nuclear reactor at calvert cliffs. >> we need this joint venture to move forward. edf is the largest world's best nuclear glare earlier this year, constellation's ceo shattuck personally lobbied for the deal. and utility officials say if it is rejected the proposed third nuclear reactor will not be built. but some opponents are voicing reservations about the joint venture. >> it could lead to higher utility rates. new nuclear reactor and less control overtime state's energy future. >> and two state senators say the psc should approve the deal under certain conditions. and want bge to lower electric rates by 15 percent and want the electric industry to be reregulated. >> the consumer is getting a bad deal here. they do not have the competition practiced in 1999. we have not seen new plants being built. >> public service commission is expected to decide next month, whether to approve the joint venture, but constellation officials believe that with deregulation, the psc has no jurisdiction over this deal. >> this type of transaction, is allowed to move forward t has nothing to do with bg and after a thorough review, members of the psc say they have jurisdiction. now they must decide if that deal is in the best interests of rate payors. in baltimore, john rydell, fox 45 news at 10:00. >> bge customers get a chance to be heard. psc is holding a public hearing thursday at 7:00, war memorial building downtown. >> that brings us to the question of the day. should the merger between ed and constellation be approved? so far, 73 percent say yes. 27 percent say no. jack from columbia writes. i am not a constellation fan. but common sense tells us the reactor is needed, whether or not the psc has jurisdiction. more
