we'll go live to henryville, indiana, where lester holt has been reporting for several days now. take a look at the devastation just ahead. >> and we'll hope to save you money when we help you brush up on negotiating skills whether at the nail salon or a car dealership. you can ask for a discount and sometimes they will give it to you. how to get the best bargain coming up. >> and you know and love him as don draper on "mad men." he's in a new movie about how lives and friendships can change after the kids go. he stars with his real life partner who also wrote and directed the film "friends with kids." we'll talk to him. >> and also his second movie with kristin wiig and maya. >> lots to get to. natalie is at the news desk with the headlines. hi, natalie. >> hello once again. good morning, everyone. several inches of snow are on the ground in henryville, indiana, complicating cleanup efforts for resident there is hard hit by violent storms that ripped through the region last week killing 39 people. lester holt is there with more. lester, good morning. >> natalie, good morning. not only folks waking up to snow, but colder temperatures in the 20s here this morning. all weekend people were out trying to find what they could, recover what they could. talking about some amazing survival stories. at the same time there is profound sadness over those who fell victims to the storms which will go down in the history books. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: terrifying seconds before a tornado struck the center of tiny henryville, indiana. danny o'shea shot it through his basement window. >> there it goes. >> i seen the tornado coming. i didn't realize it would be that severe. a trash can hit it is window hard. >> reporter: in seconds, much of henryville was in shambles, including the school where thankfully students had been dismissed early. a few who remained amazingly survived unhurt. >> everybody just laid their heads down. a lot of praying. >> reporter: the ef4 twister was the largest of a string of tornadoes, as many as 79, that touched down across a dozen states on friday and early saturday moving across the ohio and tennessee valleys. the largest outbreak ever recorded for the month of march. in indiana where at least a dozen are dead, officials have now ended the active search for survivors. >> when you're down here and you see the total devastation, it's only by the grace of god we don't have hundreds of fatalities. >> reporter: one of those who didn't me it, 15-month-old angel babcock found alone in a field, clinging to life. on sunday she lost her battle to live. her parents and siblings also died. over the weekend, survivors began to pick up the pieces of their lives and take stock. among them, janet clark who told me how she huddled in the bathroom of her house listening to homes around disintegrating. >> i was feeling the pressure build in my ears. i could hear it coming. then everything started shaking. i could just hear stuff exploding. >> reporter: did you fear the house was coming down around you? >> i did. >> reporter: a similar scene in kentucky where at least 21 are dead. in west liberty, new youtube video of a tornado's terrifying force. >> no, no, we're all right. >> reporter: and there were stories of improbable survival. >> i thought i was going to die. there at the end i thought, you know, it was over. >> reporter: throughout the region, crews are trying to restore power and phone service. >> total destruction. >> i have food and water, guys. >> reporter: while relief groups and volunteers extend helping hands. >> they know they're not alone. >> reporter: on sunday, indiana's u.s. senators got a firsthand look at the devastation. any doubts that they can rebuild and recover here. >> they'll recover. very confident in that. >> i think one of the great things about america is that in times of disaster, everybody rallies. >> we're going to rebuild and go forward. that's the story of america. >> reporter: and the story that janet clark embraces as she reflects on her own second chance. >> when we came back yesterday to start the salvage process it was like, oh, my god. i actually survived this. this could have very easily have taken my life as well as the homes around me. >> reporter: weather experts who reviewed the data say two tornadoes came through. there was a second smaller one. the big one was on the ground for about 50 miles and then plowed through here. the good news is everybody is marveling at the fact that there weren't more people killed in this. >> heartbreaking losses there in indiana. lester holt, thank you once again. the gop presidential hopefuls have their eyes on ohio. the state to win in tomorrow's super tuesday contest. the latest nbc news/marist poll shows mitt romney and rick santorum neck and neck there. this as romney reeled in big name support from former first lady barbara bush. president obama meets with benjamin netanyahu today at the white house. sunday he issued a stern warning to iran on behalf of the u.s. and israel. speaking to a pro israel lobby group he said he wouldn't hesitate to attack iran to prevent it from getting a nuclear bomb but only as a last resort. dr. seuss's "the lorax" brought green to the weekend box office. universal pictures's 3-d animation took the top spot. raunchy high school comedy "project x" was the runner-up and "act of valor" dropped to third. see you at the finish line. dozens of dog sled teams took off to race across the alaskan wilderness. it commemorates huskies who delivered medicine to nome during a 1955 epidemic. this year the winner get as truck, maybe giving the dogs a break. now back out to matt and ann. >> thank you. >> we have sorority sisters here with their t-shirts on. this expression, a 98-year-old secret. >> right. >> ready? >> all right, al. thank you. this morning on today's money, the art of negotiation. a tough economy makes it easier for bargain hunters to get what they want at the price they want. there is art to the asking. here with us is farnoosh from financially fit on yahoo. a lot of people like the idea. it's intimidating to ask for a discount. >> it can be. you cannot be shy. everyone is haggling these days. the real art to negotiating is being nice. kindness goes a long way. rather than demanding a discount which is awkward and not nice, you want to make a connection. ask the salesperson questions, get them on your team so then they feel empowered to help you. >> i imagine it's key who you ask. the person selling you something on the floor in a department store may not have the authority to give you a discount. >> not always. in those cases, try to sweettalk them first. if they don't have the authority, talk to a store manager. >> start with the charm. next, flash the cash. >> you want to have strategies in your back pocket. one is using cash. cash is king when we are trying to finance a car or a home. but even buying regular goods at the store. merchants, particularly the smaller mom and pops detest paying the banks the swipe fee for every time we use a credit card. to discourage that and encourage us to use cash you may get a d s discount. this works for me. at a thai restaurant on the upper west side i get a discount with cash. >> likely to work with smaller retailers?
