is shut down right at owings mills boulevard because of a crash there. so something you definitely want to watch out for. take an alternate route if you're heading out the door in the incomes couple wednesday's fires in west baltimore, especially six families who now don't have a home. >> the fire in the 1300 block of north calhoun and 1 pun block of north kerry street lasted for much of the evening on wednesday. 11 news reporter jennifer franciotti joins us live from the devastating scene this morning with the latest there. good morning, jen. >> good morning. of the 11 rowhouses that were affect by this fire, only two were occupied, and they have both been condemned. you can see the red condemned notice behind me. still, those who were affected showed up yesterday to try to salvage what was left. >> the day after fires brned on two blocks in this west baltimore neighborhood for nearly six hours and most of the smoke has cleared. >> i couldn't stay in the house at all. >> but people like esther still have a big mess on their hands. >> and from the third floor, my clothes -- >> esther is one of dozens of people on north calhoun and nearby north kerry who are struggling through the after-effects of the fires that drew nearly 100 firefighters. >> her neighbors have broken out windows, holes through their walls, and water damage as well. >> my roof is gone. half of my second floor is gone. i had water in my basement like that. >> the red cross is assisting six families in the area. >> i think some diapers. one of the families needed diapers. and we gave them -- we got them a hotel. >> we're told that fire investigators have several scheduled days off, so it will likely be next week before any sort of a cause is released in this fire. reporting live, jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you, jen. meanwhile, in west virginia, the owners of the 27 horses lost in the labor day barn fire continue to mourn. freddy johnson owned two of three barns that burned in charlestown. he says he was out of town when he got the call. it wasn't the property he was concerned about. it was for the horse owners. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. fire officials say whether it ends up being a criminal act or just an accident, they hope knowing how it all happened will bring closure to the owners. >> we're more than 250 days into the year, and baltimore city investigators are already on their 150th homicide. the latest after a glen bernie man was shot and killed in southwest baltimore yesterday afternoon. it happened in the 1400 block at brandish court. police say they found the victim inside a nearby business, where he apparently ran for help. >> it's a wide area. it's one of the thoroughfares from east to west. as you can see, you have homeowners out here, something that's not for this area. >> the victim died in an area hospital. if you have any information concerning this case, you're asked to call crimestoppers at 866-7-lockup. by the way, this time last year, the city had recorded 155 homicides. meanwhile, in harford county, police are investigating the shootings of two people, one of them only suffering a minor injury. police say two people were taken into custody at the scene in edgewood. this morning there's no word on if the victims were taken to hospitals. >> a federal california judge dechairs the u.s. military's ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional. the united states district judge virginia phillips says she will grant a request for an en junction halting the government's don't ask, don't tell policy for gays in the military. she believes the policy does not help military readiness, and instead, has a deleterious effect on the armed services. government lawyers argue phillips lacks the authority to issue an en junction and believe the issue should be dealt with by congress. that brings us to our water cooler question of the day. do you agree that the military's is. >> the announcement was made by the u.s. education secretary. 304 schools awarded national blue ribbons. among them, baltimore county's east technical high school. easton had already received state honors, but this latest news has tracy curtis and her daughter nicole, a student here, singing the school's praises. >> every time i do my work, it makes me hard i should try after seeing eastern tech. when i look at colleges, it maximum me feel proud when a ply, like how good they'll see me as a student. >> me and my husband, we are just so happy to have her here, and i think it is thanks a lot. we take a look at our h.d. doppler radar. kind of a wide view, because nothing's going on here. a little weather disturbance right over the far eastern tip of maine. spinning around, producing a few little scattered showers, and the air flow around that is pushing some air over the great lakes, producing to what amounts to a lake effect rain shower up there just to the east of rochester, new york. moisture from hermine, what's left of that tropical weather feature, has now worked itself into the mississippi valley and parts of the ohio river valley, right where they come together there in western kentucky and tennessee. and this is our next weather feature that may produce some rain for us eventually. it's a cold front, pushing showers and thunderstorms now into the dakotas and parts of nebraska. eventually that moves in here and gives us a chance for some relief from this dry weather we've had. speaking of dry weather, we have now been 17 days without any rain. a couple of days we've had trace amounts. the last measurable rain was .9 of an inch on august 23, and we've had some hot weather in there and everything else, so everything's turning out like straw on the lawn and whatnot, so we really could use some rain. we have a few clouds around the area this morning, and that's about it. they're not rain makers, just strat us, and they're kind of connected to that disturbance in parts of new england. we also see clouds in eastern kentucky and tennessee, and that's related to that moisture trouble. but we're kind of in the sweet spot here, high pressure giving us dry conditions and cool weather in some cases. white marsh is 61. cockeysville, 59. columbia is 59. catonsville, 61. 62 at pasadena. across the bay at rock hall, the temperature is 61, as well as chester town. here's the high pressure that's keeping us dry with moisture off to the southwest and up in new england. and here's the cool front that oovept we'll will come into the area. kind of combined with this weather out of the plains states and bring us a chance for some rain. but a couple of days from now, today just a few scattered shouds, and the sun will be the dominant feature. breezy yesterday. cooler than normal with a high of only 74 to 79. northwest winds at 10 to 15, a few of the gusts could be stronger from time to time. 7:23 this evening, sunset. a little earlier each day, if you have a project outside, you have to finish up sooner. you look at our futurecast, saturday evening, we're good until then. by saturday evening, we begin to see the weather system come in from the west. so we begin to pick up some clouds saturday night, early sunday, and then on again, off again through at least the early part of sunday, and probably throughout a good chunk of the day, we could see scattered showers, maybe even a thunderstorm until late in the day when that cold front passes through. so here's a look at our forecast. again, 77, the high today. 80 tomorrow. both days look great. and sunday, we may see some sun, but i think we'll see a lot of clouds with a fairly decent chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms. sunday's high near 80 degrees, and a bit more humid with that moisture moving in. monday and tuesday both look a little warmer than usual, mid 80's for highs. and then at the end of the week, we cool down a bit, back into the 70's for highs. but
