>> yes. we have been in the teens the last few mornings and now in the 20's. typically you would say that's cold, but compared to what we have had, it's milder. we should be above freezing. that is something we have not done in a while. average high is 42. we're still way below the mark, but we will get warmer and, how far, trade out the possibility for morning sleet tomorrow. >> are you ready for super bowl xliii? the ravens will take on the 49ers and there's ravens fever all over baltimore. >> fans are busy stocking up on merchandise and the lucky ones are going to new orleans. more on the fan frenzy. >> still flying high on the a.f.c. championship from last sunday? since the minute this store opened monday morning -- >> it's pretty tight in here. yes. it's crowded. >> they want a.f.c. championship t-shirts and see super bowl shirts and hopefully a victory on sunday. >> a victory is one thing they cannot buy here. but name just about anything else, and you'll find it. >> since they won the super bowl before, people started loving them and i think the team loves the community back. so it's like a love affair. >> there's no doubt martin and lewis good love their hometown team and they have the memorabilia to prove it. memorabilia and memories. >> some of the best times i've had were hanging out with my brother down at the ballpark prior to the game. >> but lewis hasn't been at the stadium much lately. 3 1/2 years ago he had a brain seizure caused bay brain tumor. since then he has had to stay away from the loud atmosphere. >> the loud noise would irritate me enough to set off a seizure. >> martin won lottery tickets to buy tickets to the super bowl and said there isn't anyone else he would rather go with. since they are going, they have special headphones to knock down the decibel level. >> it won't be such a shock to my system. >> hanging with my brother is -- at the super bowl is probably one of my dreams come true now. >> you can help send the ravens off in style to new orleans. this city is holding a rally tomorrow morning at 11:30 at the inner harbor amphitheatre. gerry sandusky will be the m.c. the celebration will include ravens cheerleaders. mascot poe and members of the 2000 ravens super bowl team. >> in other news this morning a 10-year-old girl is dead after a house fire in baltimore city. a fire broke out in dundalk. fire crews arrived to find the crews fully engulfed and were told people were trapped inside. the body of the little girl was found on the first floor of the home. no word yet on what caused the fire. >> in baltimore county fire units were out filing a three-alarm fire at a strip mall in rosedale. on philadelphia road investigators say the fire appears to have started inside of a jackie chan's chinese restaurant. the fire was upgraded to a three-alarm after the fire spread to five other stores. >> with all the contents, particularly in a restaurant where they are using cooking oils and other combustibles. so it was a pretty rapid spread which had us escalate the alarm quickly. >> the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> one of the great foot soldiers in the civil rights movement has died. reverend dobson led the protests and committed his life to social justice and equality. he was a major figure in a faith community for four decades. we had a chance to speak with 96-year-old anne miller who worked with dobson to start the maryland food bank and asked what she remembers about him. >> the fact that he did something. he didn't just wring his hands and say, isn't it terrible? he said something can be done about this, and he went ahead and did it. >> in a statement baltimore mayor stephanie rawlings-blake said we must give thanks to reverend dobson for his faith in the face of cruelty and race im. >> and a senator said i was proud to call him friend and his death is a loss for anyone who cares about equal opportunity for all. reverend dobson was 86 years old. >> coming up, getting the most out of college financial aid. and -- >> it is a favorite of area animal lovers. after the break we take you live to the pet expo. >> and we do have a nice warm-up in the seven-day forecast but also a little ice for tomorrow morning's commute. >> welcome back. good morning, everyone. the time is eightinutes after 9:00. 27 degrees at the airport. . 31 downtown. a light northwest wind at three, so we don't have to calculate any wind chills to start day today. normally you would say it was cold but compared to what we have had, this is a nice break. it's 20 in parkton and 22 in rising sun. we should be able to sneak above freezing in many neighborhoods. satellite imagery show we have clouds but expect mostly sunny skies for the rest of the day. things will be changing as we head to the beginning of the workweek. a storm system producing freezing rain from milwaukee and back into iowa. this is the reading edge of a much warmer air mass that's going to arrive during the middle of the week. we expect temperatures in the 50's tuesday and wednesday but orley a warm front will be coming out of virginia. ahead of that we will see a brief period of ice, snow, maybe some freezing rain. if you look around here, you know it's very difficult to get these fronts to go through. the morning commute certainly could be a problem. so keep that in the back of your mind for the early morning commute. and this winter weather advisory will likely be extended to the east to include baltimore and the surrounding metro area. 10th forecast for today, mostly sunny skies but high temperatures between 31-36. sunset this evening at 5:22. seven-day forecast. the chance for a wintry mix tomorrow morning including the possibility of some ice. then it gets warm. tuesday and wednesday we will trade out the possibility of rain both days then highs back into the 20's with perhaps a little bit of snow on friday. >> well, pet lovers, the maryland state fairgrounds is the place to be today. >> that's where the world of pets expo is going to be held. gene joins us live there. good morning. >> good morning. >> we know it's all about pets. but the a lot of this is an educational experience. can you tell us about that? >> well, it is a show that has everything a pet lover could dream of and in addition to great shopping and rescues and shelters, we have free seminars, an a.k.c. dog eye jillty trial and guinea pigathon. rep tiles. >> tell us about what's going on right there that we're looking at. >> right now you're seeing johnny pierce. muttville and he has some of the dogs here that he has rescued and trained. >> he is performing twice a day. >> i want to know how often he practices with the dog to get them to do what they do. >> did you say a guinea pig on this? >> yes. >> what happens there? >> all kinds of things for guinea pigs and you can bring yours and participate. >> i understand there are a lot of other demonstrations and things people can expect when they go out to the expo? >> in the background you see dogs jumping. we have that all day, a real dock dog competition and professional trainers helping you with all kinds of things. and we have free seminars. great food. it's all indoor and heated. it's just a full day of fun for less than a price for tickets for children. >> goes until 6:00 and children under 5:00 are free. >> you can bring your pet if it's well socialized of course and we're open until qu6 and -- 6:00 and great fun all day long. >> thank you. >> well, go red for the women in your life. still ahead. red. i just accidentally worried. still ahead, raising awareness about heart disease. >> and better your chances of receiving aid by not delaying your faff save forms. >> first a look at some events going on around town tae. ♪ using cloud computing and mobile technology, verizon innovators have developed a projective display for firefighters. allowing them to see through anything. because the world's biggest challenges deserve even bigger solutions. powerful answers. verizon. >> a major gift, from new york city mayor michael bloomberg giving $350 million to his al 345 matter johns hopkins university. $100 million is earmarked for financial aid for students in need. bloomberg has given more than $1 billion to the school since he graduated in the mid 1960's. speaking of money and higher education. we have a special guest telling us how to pay for a college education which is getting more and more expensive. you have some tips to tell you know what i mean terms of fafsa specifically. >> yes. we're getting to the time of year where you have to file your fafsa in order to get aid for the upcoming college semester. the big thing is you have to file early. sometimes with schools it's sort of a first come, first served basis. also if you delay, you may not get as much as you otherwise could have. >> and there were people that assume they don't qualify and won't do it. >> that's right. some people who have higher incomes feel they won't get aid for their child but that may not be the case especially if your child is looking at a private school or looking for aid for the child in college. >> one of the calculations for the fafsa is they look at the parents' assets. oftentimes the parents will have investments and savings or still have an autoloan or credit card debt so they want to take come of their -- >> say you get a big bonus or a stock option, and that will increase your income. so then you are reduced on your aid. so appeal your decision, tell the college, hey, this is a one-time thing. i usually don't make this much. and they will take that into consideration. >> so make sure you do your research. >> yes. >> and minimize or eliminate one-time tax items. >> yes. this is driven off your tax return, so if you have a large capital gain or pull something out of on the amount of aid you get. so you want to try to avoid those situations as much as you can. >> and then getting assets out of your child's name. >> fafsa creates what they call an expected family contribution. so they look at the child's income and assets and it's cal located at a higher rate so if you can move some of that to the parents's a credits, you could end up there. so for federal aid you have to file by a certain date but the other filing is done much sooner. so pay attention to those dates, when they are due. >> coming up next on 11 news, don cary and your sunday gardner. >> used do taking little plants like this little african vilet and put it in a pot and watching it grow. >> i want something a little different. >> we're going to talk about putting plants not in water. more information coming >> well, good morning, and welcome to your sunday gardner. i'm john collins and we are going to do some serious gardening. but it's january, so you can't do it outside. so we are going to bring it inside and we're going to do it without soil. >> hide -- hydro uponics is something that's catching on. >> tomatoes are grown like that. >> in some cases you're able to buy the entire plant. >> describe the system. >> we have recirculating water. we start out with a reservoir here then a pump that pumps the water into another unit and we have a tray that keeps these out of the water. in this case we use rock wool but it still maintains some air. we say sometimes soil is so compacted and too much water fills the spaces. >> so the capillary action? just takes it up and keeps the roots moist and the roots go into that rock wil. >> yes. and this is what happens. that punch is able to aerate the water a lot more just like you would in the fish tank. >> that's the one thing we don't have. >> but you can use an air stone. >> to keep oxygen in the water. >> otherwise it's not that different from growing in soil. >> water doesn't have the poe that is yum and nitrogen? >> you can use a liquid fertilizer in just the right proportion for these various plants and really learn to grow exactly what you want. >> based on whether it's a fruting or flowering or leafy plant. for an indoor use you have to have light. >> and flores nts , too, a nice wide spectrum. you can move them up and down so they are always only eight or six inches above the plant. to give them the maximum amount of light to watch them grow. >> now if you take one of those existing plants and let's see, african vilet? >> yes. we'll just but we don't want to disturb roots and because it will eventually grow into here and also you could do seed starting. >> yes. we did this many years ago and did grow tomatoes and had tomatoes on our vine in december. so it's a way to have tomatoes year around. >> these are little blocks that you put in this plastic framework that would go in here. again, it's not totally submerged in water. >> it's just intensive growing. if you can't handle not gardening january through march, this is a way to keep you going. >> wow. keep that gardening bug green. and you can thereafter have an indoor system. >> i can see someone filling their basement with it. all right. hyde uponics. it's been miniaturized but can be done right in your home. >> and all sorts of components available. >> it's a variation on having a fish tank. >> there you go. >> cary, thank you for joining us talking about plants that grow in water. and next sunday we'll see what else we're going to grow on your sunday gardner. >> if you have a question send it to wbal-tv. you can also go on www.wbaltv.com. >> all right. the time is 9:27. 27 degrees at b.w.i. our q&a is coming up next with dr. peter. >> plus 13,000 people take an icy dip in the icy chesapeake bay all for a great cause, a wrapup of that when we return. >> welcome back to 11 news sunday morning, everybody. thanks so much for joining us. let's take another look outside. folks on facebook saying is it going to warm up to 30 like tony says? [laughter] >> i think they want to make sure it's not going to get any -- >> everything is relative, right? most days you would look at this and say it's going to be a cold day but with the temperatures we just went through in the single digits and teens, right now there's plenty of sunshine and we'll make it up to 34 now, tomorrow things are going to change. unfortunately we have a little rain and freezing rain and sleet possible. >> sandy point state park was the place to be for the brave, committed, chilly and brave hearted. the 17th annual polar bear plunge lived up to its name after the coldest week in the winter season. 11 news debra wiener has more. >> it's probably fair to say that all year long nothing sounds quite like this. >> and 11 is out there with your game faces on. >> nothing feels quite like this and nothing can really compare to this. the ritual, the rite of passage that is the maryland state police polar bear plunge. >> ♪ and the home of the brave ♪ [applause] >> the view from above, thanks to captain roy, gives the true sense of this enormity. 13,000 plunged into the icy which he is beak into what has grown to be the most successful fundraiser in our history. all night long dozens of super plungers met the water 24 times and raised nearly a quarter of ooh million dollars. >> you're cold. how are you doing, angel? >> wonderful. i'm tired but having a glass. this just brings joy to my heart. every year when we do this event. it just brings me great joy. these people want to be a part of our life and our community and that is all i can ask for. >> is it a true polar bear plunge? >> yes. >> terrific out here! >> the early numbers show more than $2 million was raised this queer. but officials are still counting. a final number will be out later in the week. probably about the time the super plungers have officially thawed. deborah weiner, wbal-tv 11 news. >> another polar bear plunge with a different cause took place yesterday in the washington, d.c. area. with snow on the ground and temperatures in the 20's, more than 150 people took a dip in the patomic. it's brought to you by the climate action network. their goal so urge government take stronger action on climate change. >> time for a sunday morning q&a. joining us this morning the new c.e.o. of evergreen health cooperative. thank you for coming in. for folks who don't know, what is the evergreen health cooperative? >> it's a new insurance company own and and operated by the affordable care act known as the obama affair we will be on the travelocity of health care. so people who annual guess to travelocity or expedia, and be able to choose different options including care first, etna and evergreen which is a non-profit health insurance company owned and operated by its companies. >> anyone can access that? >> yes. we're targeting particularly those with working class incomes 30,000-$80,000 a year. we'll -- >> it will still be less expense i than other companies. >> so what if anything is there ? >> this coop program was set up to have competition between the insurance companies. maryland there has not been a new insurance company in 30 years. the coops were set up to compete with them but at the last minute they cut out future -- and be less competition and clessdepomp so this continues to be, but for now it's a viable option? >> yes. it will be available starting october 1 to enroll in that program. >> all right. let's switch gears a little bit and talk about what's happening with the flu. we're seeing all kinds of outbreaks. >> the true flu season has probably peaked back east. or out east from california, so i always call it back ago. i now have it predominantly higher deaths. the flu is obviously a virus, but a lot of other viruses, particularly noroviruses where people will get sick, stomach, vomiting, diarrhea and as well as other symptoms, that's probably not the flu itself. >> and that's coming from aw -- australia? >> yes. the bottom line is for all these things, do the same general types of safe behaviors. wash your hands. wash your hands. wash your hands. cough into the crook of your elbow and don't go to work or school if you're sick. >> so let me ask you this. there are people between that and the flu shot they get it but still come down with the flu. >> the flu shot is not 100% effective. it does decrease the symptoms from the flurks so it's certainly worth it. getting the flu vaccine, it takes a couple weeks for the vaccine to take effect but there are three different strains used in putting together the flu vaccine each year and it's a guess from nine months earlier when they start the process of what exactly is going here. >> if your kids are feverish, they don't want them in day care or school. so at what point are you able to go back to work? you feel better but aren't going to infect everybody else. >> you're infectious for a day before you come down with major symptoms and five to seven days after words of having symptoms. so you should be fever-free for about 24 hours. >> as long as you wash your hands, because you transmit things from noses to other places. after you wipe your face or nose, you can wash your hands. >> thank you so much for coming in. >> don't go away. we'll be right back. first david gregory with a look at what's coming up on "feet in press." >> i'm going one-on-one with the republican party 2012 vice presidential nominee, paul ryan. we will cover a lot of ground including the spending fight ahead on capitol hill and chairman of the house budget committee and weigh in on the future and ted koppel joins our future and ted koppel joins our political round table. >> welcome back. good morning, everyone. plenty of sunshine out there to start the day. the time is coming up on 41 minutes past the hour. 27 degrees at b.w.i. 31 downtown and light northwest wind at three miles an hour. you would say it's mild compared to a week ago. but 22 in randallstown and 22 in rising sun. we should be able to sneak above freezing today. clouds we had earlier this morning have dissipated. it will probably start to fill back in as this next storm approaches. storm system here coming across the northwest producing freezing rain and sleet. from st. louis back into parts of iowa. unfortunately, i think it's going to do the same thing here. the time frame is early you remember the morning. we could see problems with rain, sleet and possibly a little bit of snow. we will transition from the cold to the warm and tomorrow morning there will be a warm front south of us and north of that warm front we could see a period of icing going on for the monday morning. in the western suburbs, i talked to the guys who said they might issue a weather advisory later today for baltimore. >> so today, mostly sunny skies with a mixture of sun and clouds this afternoon. the high between 31-36. we start off tomorrow morning with a period of snow, sleet or freezing rain and some icing is likely then temperatures will fly above freezing. tuesday and wednesday we will be in the 50's. then it gets cold again at the end of the week with perhaps a little bit of me to on -- little bit of snow on friday. >> all right. we're talking about the go red for women campaign. welcome lana to talk about this campaign. >> thank you. >> i know you have a fashion show but facts for women. >> 43 million women are affected by heart disease. it's preventible. and the goal of the american heart association and the go red campaign so wipe it out, because it can be. >> the events going on this week? >> yes. february is heart month. even though heart health should be all year around but this friday at towson town center, it's free. you can come between 5:00 and 9:00. there's a zumbathon and that will be fun. everyone is wearing purple for the ravens but you can wear a splash of red. i see you came prepared for the occasion. >> yes. purple and red goes together. there's a casting call for heart survivors. we have blood pressure screenings and so many activities, give aways and a wonderful fashion show at 1:00. and it's all free. >> speaking of fashion shows, i see a few great-looking people. >> the first model. i'm going to give you a little preview of the fashion show. this is hillary. and she is wearing a simple look. it's a red roughal top and we gave her black sin squi -- skinny jeans. >> a nice top and clean heel. she looks beautiful. the top is by sunny lee. she looks fabulous. >> you look gorgeous, girl. >> so thank you, hillary. kareem is up next. we can't forget the guys. so kareem is wearing a nice fitted suit by bar three. it has a slim fit. he has the vest underneath and we topped it off with a fabulous silk tie. i don't know if you can get it on camera, but it's a textured tie. >> great paisley. >> so guys, if you don't know thousand wear red, pop it off with a tie. >> all right. thank you. >> and then our past model is jade. >> hello. >> i love this look. it's so super cute comfortable. she's got the polka-dot skinny jean and casual, comfortable sweatshirt. both of these are tommy girl. we will show girls but symbolizes the whole go red movement, we've got to pass it on to our kids in the future. >> she looks cute. jade is my daughter. >> so cute. >> we want everybody to come out this saturday, friday, 5:00-9:00 and saturday 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. >> everybody get out and go to those events. don't go away. up next on 11 news, weaver in the kitchen for sunday brunch. but first, here's a look at last night's winning lottery numbers. >> welcome back, everyonet time for sunday brunch. joining us this morning, you'lla mcdowell from the big bean theory. >> nice to see you. >> what are you going to make for us? >> now we are going to pick some pan seared fish. this fish is a white thick flounder. you can also use cot or mahi-mahi and we're going to season it and pan sear it. >> and you have someone helping you? >> yes. this is my son, chef marvin. and we infused it with garlic. >> how did you do that? >> i roasted that garlic in there and let it sit so it could get the flavor. now this has bean flour incorporated. garbanzo bean flour. he is going to put that in there. let it sear and get a nice cripsness to it. >> not everybody uses the technique of seasoning the oil. where'd you get it from? >> my head. >> what's the big bean theory? >> if you incorporate a quarter cup of beans in your diet every day you will strengthen your heart. and there's other medical benefits. >> when you were cooking earlier, it smelled delicious. so bean flourks can that be used to cook anything? >> well, a lot of people have allergies. they can't have gluten. they can't have wheat. if you take the bean and grind it up, you can use it as flour. we make waffles and pancakes out of it. you season the flour with cinnamon, nutmeg, and it gives it this nutty flavor but you're getting all this flavor and fiber. >> where did you come up with this? >> my imagination and research. you do know that we have over 100 different bean soups and 200 different kinds of bean-based products. >> in your store? >> well, we do them seasonally. >> we're going to give you a copy of this web -- of this recipe. you can go to www.wbaltv.com and get the recipe. you put this with some lovely vegetables? >> yes. and we put some spinach on it and put some shredded carrots and this also has wild rice. >> we'll be right back. >> good morning. happy super bowl week. my goodness. one week from today indeed, super bowl xliii between the ravens-49ers and yesterday the ravens held their final practice of the season at home. unbelievable. that came on january 26, 2013, yes. that's how good the season has gone. it's lasted this long. of all the unassuming matter of fact approaches to the super bowl, naturally joe flacco leads the way by any measure. flacco remains exactly the same, just like the man who hikes him the ball. let's check out matt berk. he may join ray lewis in the super bowl, it being his last ride. regardless, john harbaugh happy to have him here. >> matt birk has been a huge part of the ravens for the past four years and a huge part of joe's development. to my eye, he is playing the best football he has been at the end of this season. he has just done a great job for us. >> the offensive line has been very good indeed for the ravens of late. now look at college basketball. 7'1". i tried that with my nerf basketball in my room and couldn't do it. one of the best dunks from maryland in years. however, the terps could not defend the three very well. rashid sulaimon was great. comes down seth curry. yes. knocking down another three. duke, 11-22 from downtown. too many turnovers and also had to deal with that. nathan plumlee the reverse, no-look follow slam, something i had not yet before seen. that was impressive, 8-. i'm pete gilbert have yourself a fantastic weekend. >> where are you guys located?
