even though we had the plunge yesterday, the sun is out. that's what we have today. temperatures at 33. winds from the west at 5 miles per hour. as we head into the afternoon, we will reach into the upper 40's. normal this time of year is around 41. we have a front heading our way. maybe sprinkles off to our north late this evening could lead to flurries. i will show you where it is likely to fall when we come back in the full forecast. >> a rash of car accidents leave s -- accidents leaves many people dead. sheldon dutes has more. >> state police say a car was traveling in the wrong direction on davidson road. the car slammed head on to another car and caused a firey crash. >> four people perished in this crash. three of whom were in the vehicle on westbound lanes and the other vehicle was occupied by only one vibbling. briana franco and zachary rose were 18 and 19-year-old brittany walker. not long after the accident several people called 911 to report a car driving in the wrong direction. >> at this point the crash team is doing a thorough investigation. it's not evident yet whether alcohol and or speed were factors in the crash. >> regina averella is a spokesperson for the department of transportation. >> the department of transportation released statistics showing 2010 was the least deadly year on maryland roads across the country in the last 60 years. unfortunately this weekend is a tragic reminder of how deadly being behind the wheel of a car can be. >> they are not releasing the fourth person's name until family has been contacted. >> queen ann's county say a man and woman were dead after a freak accident on mcginnis road. according to police, a woman struck a man as he was walking along the road. when she pulled over to help them, a jeep struck them both. one person announced dead at the squeen scene and the other flown to shock trauma. >> the victim of a deadly crash was honored with a vigil saturday night. friends and family gathered to remember brian mcdivot, a well known and loved custodian at a local school. police revealed he was driving when he lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic. police believe alcohol was a factor, but those close to mcdivot find that hard to believe. >> absolutely never. he would remind people, don't drink and drive. on new year's eve, that's what he would stress to people. >> call somebody. you got to call one of us. >> he had been working at saverna park high school for many years. >> police are investigating two shootings. the latest happened at 5:15 in the evening saturday on the 2700 block of rigs avenue in west baltimore. authorities say they found a man suffering from multiple gun shot wounds. earlier in the day police say a 27-year-old man was found shot in the back in east baltimore. we're told he suffered non life-threatening injuries. no suspects named in either shooting. >> an 18-year-old high school student is recovering from eye surgery after a fight in anne arundel county. he was found brutally beat again near broadneck high school. no word on what lead to that dispute. police say they are consulting individuals to determine the cause. >> early numbers more than 14,000 swimmers brave the waters of the chesapeake for the polar bear plunge. it is organized by the state police and proceeds go to the special olympics organization. >> this is so amazing. i am so impressed that all that these people came out to help raise money and awareness for special olympics athletes. >> it is an awesome experience. it brings joy to my heart that the community and the state are coming out and supporting us. it makes me so happy that people care about us. >> we're told participants raised $2.5 million last year. last year's event raised nearly $3 million. >> divers in germany had the same idea. divers and swimmers came from all over the region for an icy dip. the event was the biggest of its kind in europe. the swim began 43 years ago as a practice session. >> nationals not a practice, that's a swim. it is 5:06. 34 degrees on tv hill. a final good-bye to the r & b legend with a smoky voice. we head to the funeral of singer etta james. >> and what police discovered in a home where ayla reynolds was last scene. >> first ava dinner? candles? i wanted it to be special. oh, what's this? it's progresso's new loaded potato with bacon. mmm, it's good. honey, i love you and... oh my gosh, oh my gosh.. look at these big pieces of potato. yeah but honey, i love you and... is that what i think it is...it is... it's bacon. honey look. [ male announcer ] progresso. you gotta taste this soup. >> good morning. we have another quiet day ahead. weather watching a new storm as it moves in to h.d. doppler. this will be our next rain or possibly snow maker. as it heads our way it will actually weaken. check out all that snow. lower michigan, upstate new york as well. also near watertown in the northest -- most northern part of new york. it is chilly as you step outside. currently 37 at the inner harbor. 34 in westminster. 32 in frederick. although this is cold, this is above normal for this time of year. this has been the trend the entire year. we're above normal to start off the day. we'll be that way into the afternoon as well. a mix of clouds and sunshine early on. clouds start to thicken as we have a chance to see sprinkles with that approaching storm. temperatures in the upper 40's to near 50 degrees outside in afternoon. we'll keep an eye on that precipitation. you'll get periods of sunshine mixed in with clouds. a front coming down from the northern plains and sinking down over the south and east but weakening over the mountains. so really just a sprinkle as it starts off. clouds throughout the day. better chance for maybe rain showers earlier on to our north. this could possibly switch to snow. if we see snow it is going to be a flurry around baltimore up toward baltimore county as you head into harford county as well. chance for flurries and sprinkles. most of this should be tapering off after the evening hours. late tonight skies will clear out. it is going to be a breezy one with winds out of the west 5 to 15 miles per hour. temperatures tonight in the 20's and 30's. seven-day forecast shows we dry out tomorrow. we are above normal at 45 for the high. 59 on tuesday. warm air pushes in mid-week. that brings us another chance for rain on wednesday. high temperature 63. high thursday back to 51. 48 on friday. then we could cool down enough to talk about snow. right now the forecast is uncertain as we get past wednesday. so we focus on that warm weather heading our way for now. >> covering the nation this morning, family, friends, and fans gather this weekend to say good-bye to lemmingdri singer e -- legendary singer etta james. stevie wonder sang in the late star's honor. the reverend al sharpton delivered a powerful eulogy. >> you fought a good fight, you kept the faith, you finished your cause. you beat them, etta, you won, etta. get your reward, etta. at last, at last, at last. >> etta james won four grammy awards and was inducted into the rock 'n' roll hall of fame in 1973. she passed away saturday after a long battle with leukemia. >> julius calloway passed away at the age of 87 losing his battle with cancer. calloway was one of the first african-americans to be trained as an aviator in world war ii. after the war, he continued his military career. he retired as an air force major in 1970. >> a missing toddler out of maine. over the weekend the police discovered blood in the home. the parents spoke for the first time. >> for the first time since their daughter's disappearance, they were in public together to thank people for their support and pray for her return. >> i am here. i do not have the answers. >> she was asked about her missing daughter's case. >> do you want to know my reaction? really? i am ready to go knocking on doors myself, because i want to know where she is and who took her. whatever. like everyone else said, i'm still trying to concept the fact that blood was found of my daughter. that's my reaction, ok? >> police are still not sure that the blood in the house was ayla's. >> dipietro refused to comment on the blood found in his home. balloons were released and bubbles were blown as a symbol of hope that ayla will some day be returned home. >> police believe the three adults that were home know more than they are telling investigators. >> in "medical alert" researchers agree that fried foods are ok for the heart. >> did they make a stop at k.f.c.? >> in this morning's "medical alert" most of us know the physical side-effects of being overworked, but there is a new study that shows being over worked can have mental symptoms. those who worked 11 hours a day were more likely to have depression than those that worked eight hours a day. >> researchers are experimenting with a new treatment for depression. psyche dellic mushroom -- psychidelic mushrooms. in a test of 10 healthy people, the drug was able to boost their emotional well being as well as their memory for up to two weeks. >> researchers in spain say fried foods are ok for your heart as long as they are fried in healthy oils. scientists followed the diets of 47 healthy adults and found there is no significant difference in heart disease between those who ate the most fried foods and those that ate the least as long as people ate healthy oils. that includes sunflower oils and olive oils. of course, these results did come in the context of a spanish diet, which is typically much healthier than the high-calorie american diet. >> 32 million people receive school lunches. >> students can't help to make at least one happy choice at this elementary school in north carolina where workers hand out whole wheatbuns and kids gobble them up. now the rest of the country is about to get schooled in nutrition. first lady michelle obama and the u.s. department of agricultural announced higher nutrition. the first overhaul of the school lunch system in 15ers. -- 15 years. >> when we send our kids to school we have a right to expect that they will not be eating fatty, sugarry foods we will not fead them at home. >> salt will be drastically limited. a process that will be phased in over the next decade to help kids' taste buds make the transition. many kids across the country are doing extra credit for current nutrition guidelines. >> we are seeing more salad bars. we are asking them what ahealthy foods they would like to see. >> what is your favorite thing about the lunch line? >> pizza. >> pizza will continue to be served as tomato paste will be considered a vegetable under the schools. but he says -- >> the tomato paste placed on pizza will be on low-fat crust and low-fat cheese. >> erika edwards, wbal-tv 11 news. >> schools that meet these new retirements will get an extra 6 cents of federal funding per meal and it is up to each school district to end meet their budget. stay with us. there is much more ahead on "11 news sunday morning." first a look at events going on around town this weekend. >> the supreme court has unanimously agreed to not allow police to track suspects without first getting a judge's approval. >> many of us rely on g.p.s. to track our position. >> you know, criminals don't freely give information up to law enforcement. they try to stay astep ahead of law enforcement. this has put us two steps behind. >> the supreme court ruled investigators have to get a search warrant before they can attach a g.p.s. device to someone's car. as a former maryland state trooper, this man says an officer's ability to stick a g.p.s. unit under a suspect's car without warning is a priceless investigative tool. >> the decision is very disappointing. for years we used devices to track vehicles, and the suspects don't know that we're tracking them. wel we can gather a lot of useful information. >> antwan jones says police put a g.p.s. on his car. he appealed his verdict. >> the long-range implications are the police are going to have to be a little more respectful of people's rights, property rights. >> he believes the decision will have far-reaching effects when it comes to keeping up with criminals. >> these devices are critical and useful in the investigation s. this is going to hamper law enforcement. >> it has been made clear this will not be their last word on technology surveillance. these issues will get more complicated. >> it is 5:37. coming up, a look at our top story. >> and troops from iraq and afghanistan get a first-of-it's -kind welcome home. >> and a recent bout of layoffs. >> we're keeping our eye on h.d. doppler. we'll time this out and see how it affects us. i want a baby. a baby? front maybe could bring sprinkles or flurries tonight and a better chance later this weekend. >> our top stories this morning. two firefighters and a civilian recovering after an accident with a fire truck. the truck was responding to air fire in brooklyn park when it struck another vehicle and utility pole 5:30 friday. officials say they found no fire . a recent bout of layoffs as part of what's being called a performance improsme initiative. it is a mix of clinical and nonclinical support staff. st. joseph's has been dealing with a drop in patients after the drop of its lead card oljift. >> the arch die -- diocese is looking to sell st. peter of the apostle church. according to the baltimore sun, the 71-year-old facility will soon be home to carter memorial. >> the city of scluste st. louis was the first to -- the city of st. louis was the first to hold a welcome home parade for soldiers returning from iraq and afghanistan. >> mother nature signed off on a great welcome home. old glory waved high as people gathered to honor those returning from war. it is also to remember those who lost their lives. >> it is great. what is really great is the people here honoring everyone. it california couple used to build their dream home. >> good morning. we are off to a quiet start on this sunday. later today we could be talking about a little precipitation. i want to show you h.d. doppler first to keep an eye on this latest batch of snow moving into the great lakes now affecting chicago. at least starting to push into their region. this is going to be pushing down toward the south and east and could bring us a chance for sprinkles, maybe even flurries. other than that, we had stronger winds pulling over the great lakes kicking off lake-effect snow. maybe in upstate new york heavy snow falling around watertown. as for our snow, it will probably be minimal as it heads our way. we'll keep an eye on the storm. the temperatures first. the temperatures all across the nation are pretty mild right now. almost everywhere you look at or above freezing, pretty odd for point later half of january. the coldest spot is january. international falls, 4 wee low zero. it is not that bad, considering what time of the year it is. back to our reeg region, temperatures are at freezing if not above it. 34 nm gaithersburg. maybe 35 in ocean city. the coldest spot on the map out in the mountains. 21 in oakland and 26 right now in frostburg. for the forecast, a mix of clouds and sun. more sun as you head along the eastern shore and more clouds as you head west on baltimore city. however, there is a storm heading our way. the mountains may see snow showers early this morning changing over to a rain-snow mix early this afternoon and then we could see more snow into the evening hours. this is all goods going to translate across the rest of the week as we go through the night. we hardly get anything on the eastern appalachians. current weather showing a couple clouds across the state. you'll see a mix of clouds and sunshine today. that next front will be passing by this evening. once that front moves in, th there is a -- there is a chance for precipitation. although it is slight. so we'll put the futurecast in motion and time this out. the mountains will be the first areas to see the forecast at noon. around baltimore, this could be a rain-snow mix later this evening vs. sprinkles. there may be flurries. this pushes down and fizzles out as we head into the night. that's the forecast for tonight. could see sprinkles and flurries late tonight. temperatures down into the 20's and 30's for the overnight lows. seven-day forecast, we dry out tomorrow. we're up to 44 for the high with clouds and sun. mild tuesday and wednesday, temperatures near 60 degrees both days. new storm comes in on wednesday but brings just rain. thursday and friday, slowly cooling back doufpblet next weekend may be cold enough for snow. we'll keep a question mark there for now. >> in this morning's project economy report, occupy protesters across the nation aren't backing down, and demonstrators in d.c. yesterday defended on the annual alfalfa club dinner to shower those high-profile guests with glitter. there you see senator joe lieberman among those gathered who was glittered upon his arrival. president obama spoke at this event. lice assisted the dignitaries through the chanting crowds. the protest comes two days before the national apark service is set to end overnight camping at the occupy sites in d.c. >> meantime, more than 100 occupy protesters in oakland found themselves in handcuffs overnight after police say protesters tore down fences and damaged construction. some managed to get inside the building. most of the groups marched through the streets disrupting traffic. police say arrests began when protesters ordered to disbers refused. >> a family builds their home out of recycled car parts.
