kim dacey was sent out to solve the missry. >> this is tort lee. he has lived his whole life in alexander's backyard. >> he was very easy to summon. i would feed him with my hand and get him to follow me. >> tort lee is part of the family and they even converted their garage into a place for him in the combed months. he was always friendly and gentle. >> he is not aggressive except he did find lawn mower to be to look like a beautiful tortoise female so he was very happy about the lawn mower. >> but after they returned from vacation in august he was missing. shal contacted every animal agency and started a facebook page to find him but a month later he still hasn't turned up. -- he ast years he was would get out but was quickly found. he's very obvious. he goes right out and chomps grass. if he sees you he just comes right up to you. >> one idea is he got out through the fence in the backyard. folks at maryland zoo says they could get out. >> they are tanks. they can get up to 150 pounds and go over or through many things. when they are determined they can move at a pretty good pace, like a comfortable walk pace for a person. >> that means tort lee could have gotten far in the past month. >> i think maybe someone has him and didn't really know what to do with him. >> but with the cold winter coming, she hopes to find him soon. >> i hope the get him back because he knows me and i know him and he's quite a great pet. >> kim dacey, wbal-tv 11 news. >> if somebody took him i hope they give him back. >> maybe he went on vacation. >> could be. could be. >> still ahead, what one local county is doing to help you dispose of your unwanted prescription drugs. >> and new exhibit at the maryland science center introduces us to mummies from all over the world. >> in this morning's "medical alert," young women who eat peanut bitter and other nuts may be lowering their risk for cancers and in their life. a study released from 9 now, young women, during their teen years they filled out details with their eating habits and whether they had been diagnosed with benign cancer and found those who ate peanut butter and nuts twice a week as teens were less likely to be diagnosed with cancer as an adult. scientists discovered two antidepressants could potentially treat a deadly form of lung cancer. two were tested with human mice with small cell lung cancer, a disease that has a pretty grim prognosis. cancer cines killed cells in mice that had even become rant to chemo. every day technology is finding its way into rehabilitation therapy. they are helping those regain cognitive skills. this 33-year-old stroke victim is finding technology can help with cognitive therapy. >> helping him redevelop or relearn math skills we have an app called will you mossty that helps and it helps him work on accuracy, speed and memory. >> the ipad is easier to use at home and those who are tech savvy can help connect to their family. >> and more on the maryland science center mummies of the world exhibit when we come back. but first here's some events going on around town this weekend. >> well, it's a working day for the house because sometime slipping away. just two days to go before and after critical decline to aelevator government shutdown. nicole killion in washington. >> in a late-day statement from the white house briefing room, president obama urged action to avoid a government shutdown. >> any republican in congress who is currently watching. i encourage you to think about who you're hurting. >> his comments came hours after the decision to fund government and strip out a controversial provision to defund president's health care law. >> a law in trouble. a law that needs to be repealed. >> the move was sharply criticized by texas senator ted cruz who mounted a 21-hour talkathon this week. >> and i hope both houses of congress step forward, listen to the people and stop obama care, the biggest job killer in this country. >> senate leaders say it's all up to the house. >> i think they should think very carefully about their next step. any bill that continues to play political games and force a government shutdown. with three days left, political observers stay stakes are high. >> no one can predict what the consequences will be. that said, republicans may pay a big price for this. >> so far house republican leaders hint they may not approve the bill to keep the government open but are expected to meet to remember tomorrow to discuss their next steps. in weeks, wbal-tv 11 news. nicole killion. >> as the start of the enrollment nears, the better business bureau has a warning. they say don't be fooled by scammers wanting to trick you about the health care law. they will claim they are from the government and say you've been selected to receive an insurance card but before they can mail the card they need to verify your personal info like your bank account and the better business bureau advises you to hang up and do not call number back. >> if you don't need them, get them out of the house. >> they have installed drop boxes around the city. >> the truth of the matter is any one of our loved ones is one pill or teaspoon from ndulling -- endullaging in prescription drugs. >> highlighting in the last five years baltimore county has lost nearly 5,000 lives and has near misses due illegal and prescription overdoses. it's a plan to help cut those by 20%. baltimore county has installed these 12 drop boxes, a grant from the state alcohol and drug abuse paid for the steel reinforced boxes that cost $3,000 a piece. >> this is the right thing to do to help reduce injury deaths associated with taking these substances. >> citizens from anywhere in the state can bring their used or expired prescription drugs and deposit them in the boxes. skip whose wife recently passed and had a lot of unused medication was the first to use this box at the cockeysville location. he said he became concerned after his 5-year-old son found unused pills. >> he will be finding a pill and say here pop-pop, here's something i found. >> they also say the boxes will follow a no questions asked policy even saying if people want to dispose of illegal drugs there will be no questions asked. >> we have put nothing in place to track who puts nakse those boxes. >> and for a full list of where exactly you can find these prescription drug drop boxes, we have provided it on our website, wbal-tv 11 news. in cockeysville, i'm lowell melser. wbal-tv 11 news. >> state health officials hope you can comment on their new proposal to change how hospital costs are paid under maryland's unique medical waiver agreement. they would no longer be paid per emission -- per admission. they will accept comments until october 7. maryland is the only state to have medicare agreement. you can find that on our webpage. >> well, could next steve jobs be right here in maryland? >> good. it was neat coming in this morning. clouds then clear skies and the stars and the moon. >> how did you feel? were you not looking in front of you as you were driving? >> it's a scenic view. >> actually as you mentioned that for the places that do have some of the clearing skies you may experience little fog. the fog will be hit or miss but the possibility is certainly there. clouds pushing across the baltimore area and they are not dropping much but it's possible some of the clouds out there may produce drizzle for us. right now it's 64 degrees and you talk about a humid morning. in some parts of baltimore humidity at 90% or better. so even if you don't get fog you may experience dew. we'll talk about our next best rain chance coming up in your insta-weather plus forecast. >> new details are emerging about the fiery crash involving city police that killed three people tuesday. >> 11 news learned there were multiple attempts to get officers not to pursue the suspect's vehicle. george lettis with more on this big story. >> minutes before two men in a honda caused the fiery crash that killed them and another person in a car tuesday morning, 11 news sources say plain clothes officers first tried stop the honda because the officers smelled marijuana. the city pursuit states they should not pursue a car unless not pursuing the car could cause harm or death. >> i have overall concern with what took place. it's concerning. >> he would not explain what he meant by that or answer specific questions about whether or not to officers pursued the honda but sources say there were multiple attempts by the supervisors to call off the pursuit. but questions remain as to if they were on the same channeled what was the response? with today's top story the ticking clock and looming government shutdown. luke russert is on capitol hill right now with the latest. >> reporter: here on xcapitol hill as they tried to avoid a government shutdown. yesterday on a party line vote, the senate passed a bill to continue to fund the government. it's a clean bill that did not have any funds to defund the president's health care law and not sitting well with house republicans who want to see changes to the law. president obama issued this warning to house republicans in congress. >> my message to congress is this -- do not shut down the government, do not shut down the economy, pass a budget on time, pay our bills on time, refocus on the everyday concerns of the american people. >> reporter: so house republicans have a meeting today as a conference. they are going to try to figure out some sort of possible compromise, but, as of right now, it looks like they are going to try to change the bill that came over from the senate, attack the president's health care law some in way or do something to change it up. that will not sit well as democrats who do not want any changes to the clean government funding law. as we move forward and get close to the midnight deadline, the threat of a government shutdown heightens. i talked to one gop aide this morning who says they think more likely than not we are preparing for the worst and if that happens, you will see federal workers furloughed, national parkses will be closed, as well as pay to troops overseas stopped. a lot of issues and a lot of people on capitol hill want to avoid, but right now the partisanship is so high, there's no way to see how we don't get at least to the brink of a shutdown. guys? >> luke russert for us this morning, thanks. john
